Character Name: Orothor
Age: 18 (17 at time of creation. Last Update: April 2013)
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Craft/Rank: Weyrfolk/Candidate
History: A real weyrbrat, Orothor was one of those products of Flightlust that was fostered to a milk mother at birth. He has had sparse contact with his rider parents and, unlike Holder children, hasn't really thought much of it. His fostermother was a good woman, the man she took as her partner when he was 11 Turns old was a decent father figure for him, and he was content with that. His fostermother had a son of her own when Thor was 12, but he treats the tyke like his own kin and loves him to bits. He's sure he has some half-siblings out there, but since he doesn't generally know where, he doesn't really worry about it. Orothor has been Standing for Clutches since he was old enough to (his first was at 13, since his 12th birthday occured a few days after a Hatching), but didn't really become serious about it until he was almost 15. Having watched several friends obtain dragons and lose touch, Orothor has begun to wonder if perhaps he'll be one of those Candidates that ages out and is left to find other skills in the Weyr.
To this end, he's begun investigating other options for menfolk at the weyr, trying to find something he's suited to. His fosterfather is helping him learn a bit about leatherworking, so Orothor has become a passing hand at it over the last few months (as much as can be expected for such a meager amount of learning).
Description: Orothor is dark of looks with deep brown eyes, medium brown hair and light brown skin that's often several shades darker thanks to the hot suns of the South. Most of his dark looks come from his mother, and as such he has a slightly round face with a pointed chin, almost pixie-like in its quality. Strange for a boy, it was said, but Orothor is used to it and doesn't pay his slightly effeminate face shape any mind. He's a lanky lad of 5' 10" with no intentions to grow any taller, but the hope that if he becomes a Weyrling he'll finally add some real muscle to his body.
Personality: It's hard to tell what Orothor is thinking sometimes, but that just leads to people referring to him as being a "brooding" type. He does seem to do an awful lot of brooding, but that isn't all bad. A lot of it is just his way of processing events and ideas-- something he happens to do most of the time, usually when he's in the middle of working on another task. He's good at multitasking that way, and can finish whatever his hands are working on while still having his mind on a second task altogether.
Socially, although it's unusual for Orothor to make the first move, he's friendly and modestly charming when someone engages him in conversation. His brooding is meant only for himself, so if he's interrupted during it or (of course) isn't lost in thought when someone approaches him, he just sort of moves on to the next thing and will return to his thoughts later on. He wouldn't dream of being less than polite to others, and you won't hear an unkind word from his mouth unless he doesn't realize what he's saying is offensive-- and it would have to be something intensely unusual and personal to the individual for that to happen. He won't share much about himself, being as intensely private as he is, and he's not all that interested in the personal lives of others unless it affects him in some way, but he's extremely flexibile when it comes to accepting others. It makes life easier if you adapt, or so he thinks.
His sense of humor is extremely dry, in such a way that very often most people don't get it, and it's hard to get him to laugh at a joke. In intimate social situations his smile abounds, but laughing is unusual unless someone shares his extremely dry sense of humor. And he's yet to find anyone like that.
Needless to say, Orothor is not the type to become over-emotional. There are only two arenas that can shatter this: being proven wrong and love. It will take him time to know someone well enough to fall in love with them, but if he falls, he falls hard. If a person he was involved with were to brush him aside or simply use him, he might be hurt enough to let himself say something rash or abandon the relationship altogether. With love, everything is extremes.
He dislikes making assumptions, because he really hates to be proven wrong. If someone proves him wrong in public, the conversation is over. Orothor will make a snap retort and then remove himself from the situation as quickly as possible. It's a huge insult for someone to point out your flaws and failures in public, and Orothor won't take such an insult lightly. The only way for him to openly forgive someone after that would be for him to eventually decide the person is genuinely sorry for their actions. He prefers to stew in private, where he can think over what's happened and come to a decision about it, than make his business public. Avoiding situations like that, since he hates being involved in drama, is part of why Orothor always tries to know the facts down to the last detail before he says anything or makes a judgment. He would never just jump to a conclusion and leave it at that or throw himself into action. Everything requires preparation and variables to come to a decision, not rash movements.
Other: If Impressed, he would become O'thor (OH-thor).
Quirks: Cannot stitch a moving target to save his life.
