They had warning of it at least, but that was small comfort to many residents of Trine. Still reeling from clashes with the wherholders - clashes that had nearly killed their two junior gold riders and many other riders besides - the last thing they needed was the Thread, especially over the Weyr itself. There was nothing to be done about it however save what riders always did. The wings stood mustered ready on the ground, eyes on the heavens. It was not long before the glimmers in the sky became visible, falling first over the lakes but approaching the shore fast. It was time once again; chew stone and rise up.

J'nes and brown Hatteth
HP: 53/53

They had been waiting for the Fall, of course. Hatteth and J'nes were suited up and standing with their wing when the leading edge was sighted. On the Wingleader's commend, they rose into the air with the rest of the weyr to meet their ancient foe.

Now, more that ever, they needed to be careful. J'nes didn't want to worry his weyrmate any more that he had to, and he wanted to get home to his baby safe and sound. So they kept a sharp eye on the silver strands, flying towards them at an approach that kept them away from the dangerous filaments. Then Hatteth flamed, searing a clump of it out of the sky, letting the harmless ash fall as he turned to look for his next target,

N'mol and Bronze Tyeth
HP: 81
Dmg Mod: -3
Thread Burned 9+5=13
Scored: Yes
Current Thread 179-13 = 166

Instruct the Dawns Fliers to get into Thread Formation Beta. We're still working with wings that are mostly at full strength. No need to change the game plan when it's been working so far.

Tyeth rumbled agreement as he lifted into the air and passed the instructions on to the other riders in his wing. As they fell into place behind him, Tyeth added some additional instructions meant solely to be to the benefit of newer riders who were only going into their first or second Fall.

We do not predict a long Fall, but such surprises have come in the past. Do not let your guard down. If you are running low on firestone during the Fall, report to Jaleth, who will pass the message along to me and the Weyr. We cannot afford losses, but I know you will all do well.

N'mol glanced up as the Dauntless wing rose into the air and his thoughts briefly flitted to Kleos, wounded and unable to fly.

That's us.

Tyeth lifted into the air, his wing following, and they popped between prior to Z'fer's wing.

As the wing reappeared from between and repositioned to face the oncoming Fall, N'mol had a brief moment to just breathe. His changing relationships with those from other Weyrs, the recent battles with the Revolutionaries-- and he refused to acknowledge their bastardized Weyrs as a valid title for their people, whatever new name they had given them-- and his relationship with Kindra darted through his mind and then smoothed into the background. There would be time for them later if he paid attention well enough during Fall.

Here we go, Ty. Aim for that big clump in front.

I know how to do my job, N'mol. Focus on being sure that while I do so no stray Thread falls into me.

Etasha and Coryxoth // Burn Post

Are you certain that you're well enough to fly?

To be perfectly honest, she wasn't sure. Etasha had been checked over by the healers, her wounds from the gold wher carefully cleansed and treated. The infection was gone, and with it the fever and delirium. But she still felt weak and shaky at intervals, the result of her hardship in captivity.

"I'll feel better once we're in the air," she told Coryxoth with a confidence that she didn't quite feel. Despite her apprehension, she was at the point in her recovery where physical activity would do more to help her than more rest. She'd had enough of idling while she was languishing in a cell, unable to reach her dragon or even walk more than a few strides at a time. Coryxoth was still in fighting fit, if a little bit under his usual weight, but she needed to get back into her usual routine.

She swung up onto his neck, strapped in, then looked to the sky. Already there were distant glimmers of silver. Coryxoth finished chewing stone, stretched his wings... and they were off, the black's takeoff smooth as silk and practiced as if they'd done this for a hundred turns.

I know this is a lot to ask, but try to go between as little as possible? She didn't want to aggravate anything... but at the same time, if Coryxoth was in danger of being scored, then he would still be free to blink away. The black responded with mute assent and flamed a moderately sized clump, then wheeled away with a flick of a wing.

N'mol and Bronze Tyeth
HP: 81-5-3=73

Unfortunately, their early banter was what caused their first injury. N'mol did turn his eyes to a sharp watch-- in time to see a distinct cluster of silver descending on them.

Watch it!

Tyeth withheld a startled bellow as the menace scored along his neck carving deep furrows into his flesh that forced him to disappear between before returning with throbbing pain to his place in formation.

It was not a good start to Fall.

Rochelle of Crimson Kibeth
HP: 55/55Thread
Agility: ...0 woops

Right. Thread. Alina sent her and C'tis a little gift basket, something silly and comforting at the same time. It'd hit the Weyr. If they failed, people she knew would die. Despite his injuries, even C'tis would head off to battle and that... well, that. She'd kissed him goodbye with a fierce threat of bringing him back from the dead to kill him again if he went between... and to the air they went.

Kibeth growled with excitement. They'd been told it would be a long Fall from the Mastercrafter herself, straight from Alina. She prepared. They were prepared. Firestone in place, some in Kibeth's belly, they stated flaming at the falling white strands, dodging the best they could.

Blue Malcarreth -
HP: 41/41
Agility: +5
---------

C'tis ran a final check of his riding straps, pulled his goggles down and his mask up. This was it then. He held onto the riding straps to stop his hands from shaking and looked around their ground formation for Rochelle and Aleck. He spotted Rochelle first and tried to smile at her, but then he remembered he was wearing a mask over his nose and mouth and had to settle for a nod. She'd kissed him and told him that if he died she'd kill him.

Malcarreth said dryly with a snort of smoke.

C'tis swallowed hard and tightened his grip on the harness. If this had been anything but the first fall he was a wingrider for he might have sat it out, he was still in some pain, but he refused to stay on the ground while Aleck and Rochelle flew. Rochelle. What if she died?

With that the tiny blue launched himself into the air along with his wing, eyes burning orange-red in anticipation of battle. The wounds he had taken from the wherholders were now healed to scars. C'tis' human brain might be full of doubt and fear but Malcarreth's mind was focused like the tip of an arrow rushing through the air towards its target. They were within range of the silver strands in moments and Malcarreth unleashed a pinpoint accurate jet of flame at the nearest tangle, searing it to ash.

Cetalese & Green Halith
HP: 35
Dmg Mod: +2
Thread Burned: 9
Scored: No.
Current Thread: 149-9=140

Cetalese's face was almost cold as she followed her wing into Fall. Their imprisonment at the hands of the Revolutionaries had not been an easy one, though Ceta was pleased to reflect on how she had taken very little in the way of physical abuse.

Careful, Cetalesemine. We cannot afford to be distracted while Thread falls. Halith counseled, surprisingly serious. She had been less of her usual boisterous self since Cetalese had returned, though her rider knew that the change in attitude would be short-lived.

Yes, love. I know. Cetalese's gaze returned to the present. Watch this first wave. We have a bad habit of getting hit early on.

Fire bubbled up in Halith's throat and she turned that flame on the patchwork of Thread falling toward them. It successfully seared away any chance of their receiving an injury during their first flame, and Cetalese felt herself relax slightly with relief. Yes. We will be careful.

Rochelle
Damage Post
HP: 53/55

They banked a hard right, a thick knot of Thread much too close to Kibeth's head for comfort. The Crimson flamed it, triumph and terrified excitement coursing through them both. Kibeth loved this, the fight, the venting of their rage. Behind her mask and goggles, rochelle almost sank into the Threadlust, teeth bared. She looked to her left, her right - and then up as Kibeth rose further with the others to fight.

They did not see the thin strand flutter onto Kibeths head knob until the flash of pain, Rochelle swearing, the blink between to rid themselves of certain death.

You're quite bad at this, aren't you?

shut up. Are you alright?

Peachy, drolled Kibeth as she let out another gust of fire. Their first time, in five minutes, and she threatened C'tis - who looked fine. He'd be fine.

J'nes and brown Hatteth
HP: 53/53
Agility: +1
Thread: 139/185

Hatteth turned to flame at another strand of Thread. Abruptly, J'nes saw other Thread heading towards his dragon's neck, and fast. Thread coming on the left! he warned his dragon, hoping he wasn't too late.

Hatteth tried to jerk his head out of the way, which made his flame only hit a glancing blow at the Thread he'd been aiming at, but failed to get him out of the way in time.

J'nes and brown Hatteth
HP: 49/53
Agility: +1
Damage: 5 - 1 = 4

The clump of thread flew at dragon and rider, landing on the brown's neck dangerously close to the riding straps. J'nes had to resist the urge to kick the stuff away, knowing that far from saving his gear, it would only start to consume his boot. Before he had to look at the writhing silvery stuff for long, Hatteth blinked between. The absolute cold crumbled the Thread to dust instantly, and by the time Hatteth returned to the sky above the weyr, it had long fallen off as harmless crackdust.

Are you alright? Hatteth asked his rider, turning to glance a faceted eye over his shoulder.

I'm fine, it just missed me, he assured his dragon. Your score looks nasty, though. It always did, when seen so close, even when it was largely superficial.

I've taken worse. There is more thread to fight, his dragon responded firmly, already turning back to take aim once again.

Blue Malcarreth -
HP: 41/41
Agility: +5
-------------

Their collective hearts froze when Rochelle and Kibeth vanished, and they drew breath again only when they reappeared safely in formation.

Malcarreth asked Kibeth, trying to sound teasing but mainly sounding relieved.

Malcarreth twisted in the air like a cat to evade a tangle of Thread that had blown towards him while he had been watching for Kibeth, burning it out of the sky once he was clear. There was no time for personal up here it seemed, even a moment spent looking to somebody you cared for was a moment you weren't paying attention to your surroundings and that could easily cost you your life.

V'lay and Blue Vinath - burn post
HP: 47
Agility: +2
-----

V'lay shouldn't be out. And he knew it. He had only barely been cleared, on the grounds that you didn't really need your shoulder for your dragon to flame Thread. All hands were on deck, and V'lay was determined not to appear weak in front of the rest of the wing.

Vinath was uncomfortable with the arrangements, shifting unhappily under him as he settled his riding straps and made sure he was all right. The wing signal to take off sent them aloft, V'lay stifling the sounds of pain that he knew his dragon would feel anyway.

We shouldn't do this, V'lay. It was quiet, from a dragon who knew his rider didn't care. V'lay clutched the straps resolutely.

We're doing it.

I know.

They took to the air, Vinath shrieking a challenge at his age-old enemy and twisting to flame the first clump he encountered.
