Chapter 1
Mikuko was sitting on a rock, looking off into the distance rather thoughtfully. Her hair was blowing in the bitterly cold wind. It was going to be winter soon…But it didn’t interest her, none of it did. She knew her place. She was favored, but not the favored one.
Rage was to be the heir to the empire that Brittania had built. But she was a queen of it too, but a lesser one than Rage. However, she was fine with that. Rage was deserving--the best candidate. Fierce, strong---mighty. An image to be feared and respected. Mikuko didn’t fear her, but she did pay her respect--she was not someone to cross. No one could cross her, not even the most beloved Tasma without paying for it.
She’d never had much interaction with her sisters, it was dangerous for them to be too close for too long. Tempers would flare, and before long claws would flying. So they saw each other from a distance, spoke sometimes, and just stayed away from each other for the most part.
It was this that was Mikuko was thinking about, she was old enough that soon she would have to leave. This place wasn’t big enough for her and three sisters like her. She needed to spread her wings….and build an Empire.
The thought intrigued her and she couldn’t help but smile. She didn’t want to rival Rage, she had no cause for that. But she wanted something of her own, something to build and protect--a way to honour her family, especially her father. She wanted to prove that she was worthwhile, that she could be as mighty as her sisters.
Wasn’t two empires better than one? She would be free, of course, to do what she wanted with her empire, but she would let her alliance remain with Rage. If her sister should call her, she would come. Their numbers would grow and they would be invincible.
Shaking off the thoughts of grandeur, she began to plan. This empire, it was made in a type of fortress. Safe. Easy to defend, but hard to attack…She would need to find a place like that one day. Another mountain, but not too far…she wouldn’t want to go too far from her Dad. She’d like to be able to see him often, and to help defend her family if necessary. So near…another requirement.
Before she could continue on with her thoughts, she heard the sound of hooves behind her. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Haru approaching. He was one of Brittania’s children--a biological one. She was intrigued by him, he was very strong and sure of himself.
Haru Kaiba approached and sat down beside her, not saying anything really. He liked to sit with her sometimes, a bit quietly. She was amazing to see. He’d often dreamed of having wings like her, of being a more worthy son. He wanted to feel the wind beneath him--to soar. Only Mikuko knew how strongly he felt about it. He’d always been able to talk to her very easily.
Her clear voice cut in, not quite as brash as usual, “I don’t care. You know that, right?”
“You mean, that I’m not a dragon?” He winced at it, he still rather hated being different.
“Yeah. But anything really. You’re my favourite in the world, besides Dad.”
“Well, you’re my favouritist. No one else comes close.”
Mikuko smirked, a bit satisfied with herself. “I’ve got to leave soon.”
“I’ll come with you.”
“Don’t.”
“Why?”
“I need to think about things. I need to find my place.” She turned to look at him, “But I’ll come back for you.”
Haru eyed her for a few long moments, “Promise?”
“Promise.”

Chapter 2
Nyx Queen of Darkness Mikuko folded in her wings as she landed gracefully. She approached the fortress, her old home slowly. She wanted to be seen. After she made her way in, she looked around. This place had done well since she had left. Emalthya Little Hasselti met her in the landing. "You always make an entrance," she said quietly. "Who are you here to see?" Nyx Queen of Darkness Mikuko inclined her head at Hass, “I’m here to see you all. To tell you of the new Empire that shall be built.” But she hoped for more, she hoped Haru would remember that he had said he would come with her. And that maybe, in the time she had been gone…that friendship had bloomed. She’d been so sure of it, that he’d come when she left her new home, but now…now she wasn’t. Emalthya Hasselti smiled. "Sure. You went out and got a sense of humour! Funny. Brittania is further in and Jin is out hunting. He'll be back soon. Rage is in a... rage though. But Tasma's here." She waved to Mikuko to follow her. "So how have you been?" Nyx Queen of Darkness Mikuko smiled more warmly now than before. Things hadn’t changed that much, it was still the same Hass. Her mood, her voice was much warmer, more herself, but still a little reserved. “Great. It’s been great. Finding my own place, hunting whatever I wanted. Making a home. It’s nice, won’t ever be like this though. I didn’t realize how much I missed it till I came back.” She eyed her old home as she turned her head. “I’ve missed Daddy so much, and of course I’ve missed you and everyone else.” She thought she saw a glimpse of Tasma up ahead, “So how’s things for you yet? Anything I’ve missed?” Emalthya "Well I got my head sorted out," said Hasselti happily. "No more headaches!" Tasma looked up. "Oh hey Mikuko! How're you?" She hesitantly opened her arms for a hug. "She's been trying to establish a new clan a bit away," said Hasselti excitedly. "Holiday home!" Tasma nodded and grinned. "That sounds so good!" Nyx Queen of Darkness Mikuko laughed, it was so nice to have someone to talk to and laugh with. She loved her new home, but it had been a bit lonely. “You’re always welcome there. All of you!” Warmly, she hugged Tasma. “You both look so great! I can’t believe we’re all--well grown up.” She looked about in an over-the-top fashion. “So where are the suitors? You can’t tell me that they’re not begging to be noticed by you!” It felt like home again. It was easier to be friendly now, they didn’t have to be together that long--which meant they wouldn’t fight. She could enjoy the time she had with them, instead of wishing to be separated. Emalthya Tasma frowned: The suitors are lining up for the beautiful girls," she said quietly. Hasselti looked sad as well. "Well. We don't need suitors! We always have a space here! I'm concentrating on chronicleing our family tree! I'll have to make space for you and your suitor!" They passed Vesuvia, who was lying prone in an alcove. "Hey Ves, look who's here!" Vesuvia looked up, smiled, and looked away. Nyx Queen of Darkness Mikuko had forgotten that beauty had been a sore spot amongst her sisters. She hadn’t intended to make them uncomfortable or sad. She waved a Ves, who seemed rather busy doing nothing at the moment. “Well, hopefully you won’t have to wait long for that, Hass.” She blushed, she hadn’t intended to say so much. What if her best laid plans meant nothing? What if, it wasn’t as she hoped and he didn’t feel as she thought he did. She’d be embarrassed, ashamed. Emalthya "Oooh, how do you mean?" asked Hasselti. "Is there someone that we don't know about?' asked Tasma curiously. "Is that why you've come to visit? I hope he's a dragon- I mean- I hope... THEY are a dragon." She smiled in embarrassment. Nyx Queen of Darkness Mikuko blushed furiously, but before she could say anything or make a sound the last person she wanted to see was walking across the open grounds. He hadn’t seen her yet, but she knew there was no way to hide it from Tasma or Hass now. She was looking at Haru Kaiba. Emalthya Hass waved at Haru. "Look who's here! Isn't it great?" Tasma scrutinised her brother's face, keeping mum to her guesses. Nyx Queen of Darkness If her heart hadn’t been pounding in her throat, if she had been able to move…she would have given Hass a dirty look. But she couldn’t move, she couldn’t breathe. All those nights she’d spent dreaming of him, alone up in her cave. She had dreamed to see him that his face would light up like hers, that…well a thousand impossible things. Haru Kaiba looked up, and smiled across the clearing when he heard Hass. He wasn’t expecting her…He wasn’t ready for her. His smile faltered, his whole face was blank. Her heart was breaking. He didn’t miss her, he was sorry she was back. She wanted to run, but her feet wouldn’t move. And then he was walking towards her, and she felt sick. He didn’t look happy. She should run. Haru was being drawn toward her, compelled…And then he had his hoofs in her hair. “I’ve missed you.” Then his lips were on hers, and everything felt perfect. Emalthya Hasselti choked. "Oh my ANCESTORS, MIKY!" she cried. Tasma frowned. "I still don't think my brother is good enough," she said, grinning to show her joke.

Chapter 3
Nyx Queen of Darkness Mikuko felt a thousand emotions bursting inside her, she loved him! He loved her! Her claws were in his hair, and she felt her heart beating wildly. And then their lips parted, and she could see him. The glorious smile that lit up his face. He was hers now, “I told you I’d come back for you…” It came out in a choked whisper. Haru smiled, “I knew you would. I hoped it was like this.” Mikuko nodded her head quickly, blushing. Such a public display in front of her sisters, and she was almost in tears. It was shameful, but at the same time she didn’t care. “Does that answer your question Tas?” She giggled a bit giddily. Emalthya "Sure does," said Tasma. "Mum's going to be so proud." Hass had become rigid with delight. "Ohhhhh this is aweeesomee! Have you told anyone yet?" Nyx Queen of Darkness Mikuko giggled some more, “I didn’t know.” Haru laughed as he touched her face sweetly, “I only hoped.” Emalthya Rage walked up from behind them. "What is this racket in the halls?" she asked. "Oh, you're back, are you Mikuko?" "Rage," said Hasselti quietly. "Um... I have to go add something to the tree!" She hurried away Tasma held herself ready come what may. Nyx Queen of Darkness Mikuko felt her body stiffen a little, “Yes. Just for a night, maybe two. I’ve come to tell of my new home. And-” She glanced at Haru. “I’m coming with her,” Haru finished. Emalthya Rage's nostrils dilated and she inhaled deeply. "You're coming back home," she said in a dangerously quiet voice, "to steal from us?" Tasma stepped forward. "She is not stealing Haru. And he is no good to you. More family means more children." "It is still an insult to take before you give." Nyx Queen of Darkness Mikuko felt herself being riled, but she was trying to control herself-her feelings. “I’m promising my allegiance, another empire.” Emalthya "Empire," spat Rage. "Do not make me laugh! You may get away with bragging like that amongst your peers, but do not insult me by claiming that you will be lord of me and my clan! Not to mention that you would have to attack and opress the Snow and Fire dragon clan." SHe felt her uppser lip peel back. How rude! Tasma blew air out of her nose. "Simple ignorance, Rage. Not hubris." "Intended or not," Rage snarled. "A vassal should not insult their master!" Nyx Queen of Darkness “No,” Mikuko shook her head. “No, I want to join you. Another clan, with allegiance to you.” She hadn’t meant to make Rage made, she never did. But Rage was…difficult. “I want to make my family, our family proud not take away from it.” Emalthya Rage wanted to shout but she reigned herself in, calmed her temper, but her expression of hard disdain never left her face. Tasma touched Mikuko's shoulder. "We should tell Mum. Or else you'll have a tail on your tail." Nyx Queen of Darkness Mikuko nodded her head at Rage as she backed away with Haru and Tasma. “Yes, we should.” She pushed back her braids, they kept falling in her eyes when she wanted to see. Her heart was still beating wildly, so loud in her ears and all she wanted to do was be alone with Haru. Haru was all smiles, “She’ll be happy Miky, don’t worry.” Emalthya Rage and Tasma lead the way into the depths of the mountain to the family room. The fire was always burning in here. "Mum," said Tasma. "Dad. Mikuko's got something to say." Brittania looked up as she dozed in front of the fire. "Oh yes, my girl?" Jin hugged Mikuko with one arm. "How are you, Mikuko? Nyx Queen of Darkness Mikuko felt a little anxious now, it was all so new to her. “Brittania….Mum. Dad…” she hugged Jin and pressed her head to his neck as she often had as a child. “I-We” She moved back to Haru, “We’re going to have a clan. Our own clan, with allegiance to you.” She could feel flames in her face. Haru was rubbing his hoof into the ground as if it was the most interesting thing in the world. He suddenly felt intensely embarrassed and small. Emalthya Brittania tried to wake up a little more. "I thought you would," she said. "But I'm very proud of you. Never forget your roots." That was about as loving and maternal as Brittania got and she edged back to the fire. Jin hugged Mikuko again and then Haru. He looked Haru closely in the eye. "If you hurt my little girl, I will eat you. Got it, sport?" Nyx Queen of Darkness Haru nodded, “I would never hurt her. I love her.” He felt awkward saying it to Jin first rather than Mikuko, but he couldn’t take it back now. He had hoped it’d be a bit more…romantic. Mikuko’s eyes watered when Brittania spoke, and when Haru did, she felt a single tear escape. “I love you, too.” Emalthya "Uuuum," said Jin awkwardly. "Hey you kids, why don't you leave me and your mum alone, okay?" He chuckled awkwardly.

Chapter 4From Dragon War RP Nyx Queen of Darkness The nights were cold up in the mountain, bitter cold. The wind would whip and howl in all it’s fury. Sometimes she would listen to it long into the night when she should have been sleeping. But it was hard to sleep without someone beside her, not that she’d ever had anyone for long. It shouldn’t really be a habit yet. But there was no one there at night to lay beside.. Sometimes she thought there never would be. She could handle it. Mikuko was used to being alone, used to her odd little family, and her cold lonely room. Her sisters had left, some had fallen in love--she could do it too. Her ideas of her own clan had fallen to pieces. One night she had cried about it all alone, the pieces of her dream shattered like glass and then she hadn’t allowed herself to cry again. She would dry her eyes, give it up and go back home. She would admit her defeat. The word tasted sour in her mouth, like a bitter poison. She put off her going again and again...There was more to explain than the failing of her clan. Mikuko and Haru had split months and months ago, and she knew that they likely knew but she didn’t want to face them. When had she become such a coward? It was that thought that drove her to pack up her few things, swallow her pride, and return home. But she had never made it far. That’s when she met him--Lexar. Suddenly, she found herself staying, stretching her wings and surrendering to the bliss of flying and cold air on her face. For the first time in her life she understood what it felt like to a dragon, soaring in the high heavens and hunting. It had perhaps been best that she and Haru had split. He would never fly, he had always envied her that and relationship, good ones could not be built on envy. Lexar had come when she needed someone, anyone to remind her that it was okay to be alone. It seemed a strange thing to learn from someone else, but it was true. He told her how he had traveled alone, lived alone--how he had lived a full life so far and would live a full life still. He didn’t need anyone to make him happy and neither did she. They were happy together in their brief time and when he left, she was still just as happy. The memory of him she would carry with her always along with this new outlook on life. Three months after she met him, she was home. She was excited to see her family, to see how they had fared since she’d left. She’d put back on the weight she’d lost from worry and stress, her hair shone, and she was stronger than she had ever been before. Her time with Lexar had helped her to come into her own--to accept herself. She was happy, for the first time not dreaming of some gallant male to sweep her off her feet or pining away over someone who she would never be able to make it work with. A smile, a hint of a secret, pulled at the corner of her lips. She was home

Chapter 5
Mikuko packed up the few things she had brought with her, and took one last look around the place she would call home. It seemed so cold and empty. She had dreamed of living here with Haru, of loving him and birthing his children. But the place was empty of the hoof-falls of children.
And he was gone, forever.
She knew that, she knew that they would not work things out or come to some terms with each other. He was gone, it was over. She would have to live with that. The terrible part was going home, having to let everyone know what had happened.
If only love had been enough.
She had made her way down the path that led up to her little sanctuary. It was at the bottom that she saw him, red as blood with eyes like crescents. He had fire in his wings and a studded collar at his neck. He looked at her strangely.
"You're staring," she said cooly but politely.
"I am," the red demon said.
"It's rude."
"I'm aware." She was about to smart off to him when he spoke again, "I've never seen a dragon before." He steppe closer to her and she felt her body stiffen. "Your wings are fascinating. What a pleasure it must be to fly."
"I don't fly much," she said without thinking, wishing she hadn't.
"Why ever not? With wings like that you were born to stay in flight."
"You're not supposed to ask questions like that, it's rude."
"I don't believe in the societal construct of rude."
"What?"
"Which part tripped you up, societal or construct?"
"That's even ruder," her face was flushed. She didn't want to admit she wasn't sure how the terms applied together.
"Rude isn't real," he spoke lightly flipping his spaded tail. "You see, there's honest, there's open, there's cruel, there's kind, and there's blunt. Rude doesn't exist since it is just the term for asking something blunt or something cruel."
She processed that. "I must be going," she wen to walk past him.
"Why don't you fly?" The words stopped her. She was not about to tell a pure stranger that it was because her lover couldn't. Mikuko was about to walk again when he said, "You're beautiful."
She stopped and turned back to him slowly, "What do you want?"
"I want to see you fly," he smiled wickedly.
"No, nice to meet you. Goodbye." She turned to walk away again.
"That's just a lie."
She turned on him with fierce angry eyes, "What did you say?"
He didn't flinch those strange crescent eyes looking at her. "You aren't happy to see me. You can just say it, everyone does."
"No one's happy to see you?" The thought made her feel sad. She shook her head, "I mean... I can see why."
"Perhaps," he sad softly. "But I don't think you really understand it do you?" He moved around her slowly in a circle. "You're thin, there's not enough muscle to your body or wings. You're tired, you're sad. You're beautiful for sure, but you're not as beautiful as you could be."
"I don't have to take this," Mikuko started walking down the mountain.
"Did he leave you or did you leave him?"
She whirled on him again, "Why do you ask these things?"
"Because it interests me, some of it is written plainly on your face." He looked her over again, until she looked away. "I am sorry," he said it kindly. "Some things don't work out. Was he why you haven't flown?"
"Yes," she said a bit bitterly.
"That's no good, love should never ground you. You're right to be rid of him."
"Don't say that!" She shouted.
"I'll make you a deal, I'll leave you alone if you can fly for ten minutes. I'll leave let you do whatever you were going to do. But if you can't, you stay here for another week and I'll show you what it means to really fly."
"What makes you think I don't know how to really fly?"
"Because you're walking now."
"Fine," she spit out.
"If I win, one week and I'll teach you to fly."
"Ten minutes and I'll show you I already can," she said angrily but he just flashed back that wicked smile.

Chapter 6
She struggled with her wings to get life off. For a moment, she didn't think she'd make it off the ground. Her wings were weak and heavy when she tried to take off. Mikuko had once been able to take flight standing still, but this time she had to take a running start.
Every flap of her wings was an excruciating effort, seconds ticked by and her body protested against the exertion until her body thudded heavily to the ground. Her front leg landed under her weird, and she sat up flexing the aching joint.
"It's swelling," Lexar reached out and touched her throbbing hoof.
"Way to state the obvious," tears pricked at the back of her eyes, but she wouldn't cry.
"It has been a long time since you've flown," he said it gently without accusation.
"Yes, pride goes before a fall as they say," she swallowed back the bitterness. "He couldn't fly. He hated not flying, I only loved him." She sniffed lightly, "That was all. I just loved him."
*** Lexar sat down beside her, and took out some bandages. Gently, he felt along the bones and muscle. He looked up at her, but she was looking down. She didn't want to face him. Her face winced as he moved over her leg checking the injuries.
She was beautiful, like blue cloudless skies. Her hair wild and free, blowing in the wind. But there was a sadness to her that ran too deep. Too much sorrow for a girl so beautiful.
Her cheeks were skinny, her body haggard. She had been stressed, and tired--absorbed in other things than flying or having fun. It had wrecked her as a terrible sickness would have--love.
He measured his words carefully, "If he'd loved you as much as you loved him, he would have let you fly."
"He didn't stop me," her eyes came up at him snapping.
"But he didn't encourage you," her eyes flicked away from his. "It doesn't mean he didn't love you, he just...didn't love you enough."
"How could you possibly know that?" She spit back at him.
He was silent as he finished wrapping her leg, "There have been a great many women that I did not love enough. I think that makes me an expert on it."
She fell silent as he sat there with her. No words were said between them, as he thought of other faces he had left and other places. He looked up at the sad, beautiful girl and he wondered who had broken her so? Who had she loved enough not to fly?
"It's okay though," he said gently. "It's the past."
Her eyes were bright, wild when they looked at him. "But what about for them? Was it past? Do they still grieve for what they loved?"
"I don't know," he said simply. "I hope not. Love isn't something that exists in perfect symmetry. There's always someone who loves the other more." The silence lingered.
"Has someone ever not loved you enough?"
"No," he said it softly, sadly.

Chapter 7
She had stayed with him to learn to fly again. He had told her, truthfully, that there was a lot to learn about flying--that perhaps she had not known it all. Surprisingly, she had shrugged her shoulders and gave in.
Later, she had confessed she had really not wanted to go home. He had never had a home to go back to, he envied her that and the decision to go there or not. But he kept his stories to himself, because they were his stories and the girl was starting to smile again. He didn't want to see that slowly dawning light in her eyes to fade.
They had fallen into an easy pattern. He had her exercise, tone her her body and condition it. Everyday she would fly further and further than before before tiring. They would hunt and they would feast, he'd tell her to eat even if she wasn't hungry.
It was already starting to show, the gaunt features not looking so hollow. It was like breathing life back into a dead husk. He found at that she was quick to smile at a joke, so he told them often. She was insecure with herself--but slowly her esteem grew.
There was a caution to her boldness though, a quick mind measuring out each step before it's action. She was not hasty or rash. She bloomed like a flower that has had ti's first taste of the sun. Slowly at first, and then suddenly.
After two weeks, she was able to fly for fifteen minutes without stopping--strong, heavy flying. When she landed tired and breathless, she smiled so wide that her face was all he could see. Then she had swooped down and kissed his cheek like a schoolgirl before gliding away.
It was then that he realized that he was starting to feel something for her.
It was not uncommon for him to take up with someone, or to fall in with someone. But it never lasted. Things took their natural course and paths diverged. But when he looked at Mikuko, he put up his guard. She had been hurt once, and he would not hurt her again. Not willingly at least.
The next week passed more slowly, and he could feel the gap between them widening. That night Mikuko sat with him beneath the scars and asked, "What's happened?"
"What do you mean?" He asked cautiously.
"You're different. Are you mad?"
"No," he answered haltingly.
"Oh then," she sighed a little. "Was it the kiss?"
He saw no reason to lie, "Yes."
"Did you not...feel that way?" She was looking at him.
"No," he lied. He wouldn't hurt her.
"Liar," she laughed brightly.
This time her lips touched his. The world melted away as it was want to do in these situations, all sounded faded and he could feel her claws touching his hair.
They broke apart, but it was no use to say anything now. She'd captured him, and for the first time he felt actually powerless to resist.
"Just to pass the time," she smiled so close to him he could feel it on his skin.
"Just to pass the time," he kissed her back.
That's how they came to share a cave.

Chapter 8
She had never been so happy, not even with Haru who had been her dream. It seemed strange but that was the truth of it. Whatever this was, made her feel free and excited. Happy.
The weeks that she'd spent with Lexar left her breathless. She was learning to fly in a way she never had before, wild and reckless at times. They would drift on winds, plunge to the ground. He had even taught her how to fight in the air, though she hoped never to have to use the skill.
She had mastered her claws and use of her wings. She felt the power and beauty of what it really mean to be a dragon, to not feel as though she had to stay earthbound to please anyone.
For the first time, she realized that not only had the relationship with Haru been wrong but it had also been damaging and unhealthy. Mikuko closed her eyes, and let Haru go as she had never thought she would. Like a balloon, his grip on her floated away. Up, up, up.
Gone.
Simple as that. The weight in her chest was gone. She was finally over him.
She opened her eyes to see Lexar coming out of the cave yawning, "Good morning sleepy head."
He yawned before coming over to her and putting his arms around her. "Hmm," he said mumbling. He wasn't very fond of the mornings.
She stood there breathing in the scent of him. He had been the balm to her wounds that soothed the ache in her soul. Even though this was temporary she had accepted it, had understood from the beginning it was about release--about finding one's self.
And she had found herself finally. What would her mother think of her now? Strong and proud, might and terrifying if need be. Would Brittania be impressed? She didn't have to wonder about her dad, she knew what he'd say--that she was still his baby. She smiled into Lexar's hair.
"What you smiling about?" His voice whispered.
"How'd you know?" She leaned back and punched him.
"When you smile, your whole body does. It's like sun coming from behind a cloud."
Mikuko blushed furiously, "Stop that. You're making me blush." She kisses his lips gently. "How about a fly?"
"Sure."
Mikuko eases a few feet away from, giving a might flap of her wings. With a lurch she was in the air, her powerful wing muscles propelling her upwards. Upwards. Upwards.
They raced in the sky, and she beat him for the first time since they'd met. She was heavier, but she had more power than him now. Celebrating, she spiraled down with her wings folded in then opened them to glide before pumping them powerfully to shoot straight out.
She wasn't aware of the way Lexar was looking at her.

Chapter 9
She didn't know, nor would she ever.
It had started off as something temporary, a means of escape and freedom. How many time had he done that before? How many times had he broken someone's heart? He never thought about it when he left, how he might leave them devastated.
But not this time. God help him, he loved her. If he told her how he felt, if he told her that sound of her heart beating as she lay beside him was the most beautiful in the world, if he told her all the reasons he loved or even just one--it would wreck her.
She had loved and lost Haru, undeserving as he was. It had been hard on her. Lexar had stayed with her, watching her blossom in beauty and strength. If he made his feelings clear to her, he knew she'd be shattered. Because she did not love him like that--she did not love him enough.
How strange it was that the time he wanted this to work out was the only time when things weren't going to. He had left many women behind knowing that he had not loved them as much as they loved him.
Now the tables were turned.
He loved her, beyond reason or doubt. He loved her despite the reasons not to. Now when he would speak, he would keep his silence. He loved her enough that he wanted her to be happy--and he couldn't wreck her by filling her with guilt again when she was just coming out of her shell.
They spent their final days together mostly in the cave, enjoying each other's company. She had finally decided to go home to her family for awhile. She had not given up on her dream, she was just postponing it for awhile
He was glad she wasn't giving up her dream. There were few things sadder than that. She just needed time to build her clan, she told him. Just time and bodies to fill it.
Mikuko would be the head of her own clan one day, he saw that clearly. She would be kind, protective, and skilled. He'd taught her all about flying and combat, at least, all he knew. She was ready for this.
On the last morning, he watched her sleep. Her eyelashes fluttering in the throes of dreams. He wondered if she was dreaming of him. Today might be the last day he ever saw her, so he drank in her visage as long as he could.
When the sun rose, they said their goodbyes. Promises to meet again, to have a good life, to follow dreams, and other things that probably would never happen. As he watched her walk the path back toward her family, all he could think of was how much he loved her to do this. He didn't want to.
Twice, he almost ran after her. But he'd only get a few steps before he'd remember how devastated she'd be. He had loved her more or maybe she hadn't loved him at all.

Chapter 10 From Dragon War
Mikuko had just set down her things when the bell summoned them for dinner. Everyone would be so happy and suprised she was home.
She hurried along to the meeting place and almost ran into Dalila, who was breathless and sweaty.
"Mikuko," Dalila was drenched in sweat and breathing hard. "What....doing here?"
"What's wrong?," Mikuko took in her appearance. "Are you okay?"
"Let's get to the summons," she sad with more breath. "Walk and talk," she started off toward where Brittania would be. "There's some dragons or something that were taken prisoner. People, someone or something coming. I don't' know, I didn't see them."
"How do you know?" Mikuko's heart was racing.
"Message from Soren, he and the boys found a dragon, two I think?"
The boys.
Haru.
She stopped moving, standing absolutely still. Haru was coming, he was probably in trouble or in danger's way. She reached for feelings that weren't there anymore. She did care for him, but she did not love him anymore.
But oh! Oh! Oh...
She was pregnant and he was the last person she'd want to tell it to right now.
"Are you coming or not?" Dalila stared at her.
"Of course, let's find Brittania." She started walking again. The fluttering in her stomach made her queasy, all the adrenaline making her sick.
She breathed deeply through her nose and out through her mouth only once. Her head felt clearer already. Lexar had taught her how to defend herself, how to defend those she loved. He'd also given her more than that.
Her hoof went to her stomach, touching the tight skin there. She'd be showing soon. She'd realized two days after she and Lexar had parted. Mikuko had thought to go after him, he deserved to know--but she didn't know where to look. This wasn't mean to be a family or a recurrence, they hadn't' exchanged directions.
The only thing she could do, was go home to her Mothers--to Shoubu and Brittania and her father. But Shoubu was down the mountain, she'd have to visit her later after stopping by her dad's and mum Brittania. But now something was coming, and if she had to fight then she would.
