In Which Susipicious Items Are Got

When she had woken up that morning on a Friday, Akuja was struck by this strange feeling that today was going to be…different. She wasn’t sure how, she wasn’t sure why, but as she got up and got ready for work at the Funeral Home, it was a feeling she couldn’t shake off. Today seemed highly suspicious. She was very attentive to every detail that went on during her day, from what she did during work to what she ate during lunch but still, she even called her good friend, Freyr, to see if there was anything going on, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Yet still the feeling was persistent and constantly reminding her it was there.

Work was over for the day and she didn’t exactly feel like returning home yet, so the woman decided to just go for a nice long walk. Hopefully it would ease her nerves. She wandered here and there through town, lost in thought as to what could possibly be rattling her cage today when her feet suddenly came to a stop and her eyes turned towards a suspicious looking shop. Huh…that’s odd…she didn’t remember seeing this shop around before. Maybe she just always overlooked it before? Not only was it suspicious looking, she also had this odd desire to go in and browse the wares.

So she did. There was nothing wrong with that…right?

Upon entering the store she was greeted by an equally suspicious shop keep, who she gave a small greeting to in return before she started to browse through the shelves where many upon many of items were. Maybe this was an antique shop? It sure looked like it (a lot of the items seemed to be like junk to her). Akuja continued to browse just for the sake of looking until her feet came to a pause once more as her eyes once again fell onto two certain items. A rather vibrant jewel with a yellow tassel and chain and then what appeared to be a finely decorated silver compass. The woman stood there staring at the items for a good few moments, her head tilting ever so slightly to the side.

Huh…she’d never been struck by such a strong desire to have an item before, and not just one, but two of them. There wasn’t anything up with that…right?

She had thought about possibly walking out of there without these items but it honestly wouldn’t hurt to have them, right? Acquiring these simple wall-like decorations had nothing to do with that ominous feeling she had this morning, right? Now that was just silly! Akuja shook her head a bit as both hands reached out to grasp the items. She was not a superstitious person and that was definitely no reason to start now.

They were just items.

The woman was suddenly starting to have doubts again though as she went up to the counter, fully intending to pay only to find out that not only were the items free, but it was also no returns. What…? What kind of shop ran like that? How did this shop stay in business? She supposed it wasn’t really her concern, but still. They were for free and they couldn’t be returned? Very suspicious indeed. Maybe they were counterfeits? As long as she didn’t end up going to jail, she supposed she didn’t really care…

Upon arriving home with her newly acquired items, Akuja set to work with finding two nails and hammering them into the wall, where she then placed the Guard and the Compass. After arranging them ever so neatly, the woman stepped back and admired the wall. They looked nice up there…once again the woman tilted her head though as the items seemed to give off this strange glint…maybe she didn’t sleep well last night and was seeing things? Yes, possibly. After putting the hammer away and admiring the wall for a bit longer she decided to retire to bed, flopping down on the mattress as she briefly chastised herself for having a panicky feeling all through out the day when obviously nothing happened at all.

The sleep was deep and pleasant but on Saturday morning, it was the chipper birds that started to wake her rather…childish chattering. Voices, sounding like they were coming from within her house. Surely the neighbor kids weren’t stupid enough to try and break into her house…right? Maybe they were playing near one of her windows…? Akuja rolled out of bed, rubbing her eyes as she ran a hand through her messy white locks and lugged out into the hall, where the voices seemed to be getting louder. This was so odd…

As Akuja rounded the corner, the woman was given quite a shock that made her heart jump, to find two children hanging by their scarves from the nails she had driven into the wall only the night before. She wasn’t sure what to be more shocked by.

The fact that there were two children hanging on her wall, or the fact that the nails were strong enough to support children.

Surprise, Instant Mother Hood, Just Add Children

The woman was certainly dumbfounded, shocked, surprised…these words didn’t seem to exactly describe what she was feeling as she stared at the two children hanging from nails on her wall. Her eyes were wide, her mouth slightly agape as she stared at them, one hand coming up to rub at some of her wild locks absentmindedly. She then reached to pinch the skin of her arm, as if maybe she was still sleeping. The thought crossed her mind:

Not just one booster seat for the car, but two. Two booster seats.

The children equally stared back, though their expressions were quite the opposite of hers. The small girl with purple hair and bizarre, black eyes stared at the older woman quietly and calmly and with a bit of expectation, like she was waiting. The other, more colorful child on the other hand, was wiggling from his perch on the wall; his eyes alight with energy and excitement. This was her!

The boy turned to look at the little girl, grinning. “It’s her! This is our mom, little sister!” A fact he had established quite some time ago while they had nothing better to do than to hang there on the wall. The little girl just gave a simple nod of her head, for yes, she had come to that conclusion herself when they were plucked from the shelves of the shop. At this exclamation Akuja startled. What, her? A mother? No way….A thought suddenly struck the woman’s mind, of a blue haired shop keep who gave a sympathetic look as she told her no returns.

…She knew this was going to happen!

Akuja muttered something under her breath about suspicious shops and equally suspicious shop keepers as her focus came back to the children at hand. Oh…maybe she should get them off the wall. The woman then did just that, plucking the children off the wall by untangling their scarves from the nails, where she was even more surprised to find the items she had received still on the wall, each having lost its color. Odd…very odd indeed. Her attention was once again pulled by feeling a small warm body clinging to her leg. It was the little boy, who stared up at her all bright eyed and grinning widely. “We’ve been waiting forever for you, mom!” He cheered, nuzzling her leg a bit as he hugged on tighter. Akuja didn’t look quite sure how to handle this as she glanced at the little girl who stood a bit away, looking like she wanted to do what the little boy was doing but wasn’t exactly sure if it’d be welcomed or not.

Oh dear…she was really stuck with these children…wasn’t she?

Once it was apparent she was quite awake, once it was apparent that these children were indeed real and not going away, did she start through the motions of starting to take care of them. It didn’t mean it was any less of a surreal feeling right now, as she lead the two children to the kitchen and sat them down and served them some cereal. She could only continue to stare at them from across the kitchen table as she drank her much needed coffee, still very much in disbelief.

Booster seats, beds, kid stuff…clothes…toys…

All the things these kids would need….baby sitting! Oh god, that was totally another subject that she started to fret about until the light bulb went off. Freyr! That big b*****d wanted children, so he should totally want to baby sit some, right? He usually didn’t work when she did, so the hours would work out perfectly….Oh…he was not going to believe her when she told him that she had….children.

Speaking of children…she just couldn’t call them that forever…they needed names…

Being the ever so creative person that Akuja was, she deemed the boy Fremere and the girl Seidh, due to recalling seeing those titles for the items at the shop, and if anything, it was good to stay consistent, right?

Well, the children didn’t disagree with this, so that was always a plus.

Journal

Dear Journal,

My mother gave this journal to me and told me it was a good practice to write in it. Write things about my day, my thoughts and my feelings. I like my journal, it’s really pretty. It has flowers on it.

After my brother and I were born, mother took us to this large store and bought all kinds of things for each of us for our rooms. I like my room too. It’s really pretty as well. It is different kinds of purples and blues and purple-blues. My blankets are really nice and warm and my pillows are soft. Mother also took us to the pet store, so that we could get pet fish. I like fish; they are really pretty and calming to watch.

At the pet store I met a really nice person. He has eyes that are just like mine but his eyes are prettier. I still don’t like my eyes…even though he said they were pretty. His name is Quint. I like him a lot. I named one of the goldfish after him. I don’t think he knows, but that’s alright. He gave me one of his earrings to take care of. I promised I will take really good care of it, always. Mother also bought me a necklace to put the earring on so now I can keep it safe with me at all times.

Fremere made up a new game called Turtle Wrastlin when mother took us to the park the other day as well. It is fun. I like turtles too. They are cute.

Why Television Rots Your Brain

It was a nice Saturday after noon, or so Akuja thought. Seidh was lying on her stomach on the living room floor, coloring in a coloring book as she half listened half watched the cartoon movie currently playing. Fremere was on the couch, coloring in his own book as well and half paying attention to the movie like his sister was, but he was waiting for the cookies that mom was making.

While cartoon movies were meant to entertain and enthrall children, in just a few moments it would totally unhinge one.

It was at a certain point that Seidh chose to pay attention back to the cartoon movie, her black eyes looking up from her coloring page full of colorful flowers where they just should have stayed for her peace of mind. The young girl froze as she stared at the television, the purple crayon dropping onto the floor with a quiet thud as her lips parted in horror. On the television, coming down in their ship, were aliens. Light gray aliens with big, buggy, black eyes.

Seidh shrieked.

Quite startled, Fremere flailed a bit on the couch, one of his crayons flying off into the hallway. In the kitchen, the empty plastic mixing bowl clattered back onto the counter as Akuja went wide eyed and was immediately in the living room, quite startled as well to hear such an uncommon sound from the small girl. Maybe her nose was suddenly bleeding and it had startled her (hey it happened to her all the time when she was young)…? Upon arriving in the living room, she found Seidh to be standing, one hand cupping her cheek as the other pointed at the television accusingly as one foot stomped on the ground.

I look like an alien!” The small girl wailed at the top of her little lungs, very much dismayed as the aliens zoomed across the screen on their space ship. “They have eyes just like mine! I hate them!” She wailed a bit more.

Fremere blinked as he glanced at the television screen, then offered up a smile. “Don’t fret little sister, I love your eyes just as much as I love you! They…twinkle like the night sky…in a city….er…I can’t see stars when we’re in the city…” The boy's kind (yet almost awkard) words (luckily) fell upon deaf ears though, and truly Akuja had to work hard to resist the urge to laugh for that would surely just upset the girl further. She came over and changed the channel to one about animals and kneeled, placing her hands on the girl’s shoulders.

Seidh, you do not look like an alien.” Akuja started to which the girl protested. “First…you are not bald.” At this she reached and tugged gently on the girl’s braided locks. “Second, your body is not all stretched out.” At this she reached and wiggled her fingers with Seidh’s. “Third, you don’t fly around in a Frisbee and fourth, you are from the planet earth. Lastly? Your eyes are way better looking than any aliens.”

At this little pep talk, the girl had calmed down a bit, but there was now a large frown on her face. While Akuja did have very good points…it still did bother her that the aliens had all black eyes too. Luckily Akuja was (oddly) very patient with this for she had a feeling this was something her daughter wouldn’t be able to get over right now, but something in time. She just needed to keep being reassured of the fact that she had very pretty eyes, and that they made her unique. The older woman sure liked her eyes a lot but for right now, she was sure she had a good little cure.

“…Hey…let’s go get some cookies, I just took them out of the oven.” At this she smiled a bit as she stood and took Seidh’s hand and Fremere cheered as he hopped off the couch and dashed into the kitchen, proclaiming his love for the gooey round chocolate chips as the two followed.

It was certainly a good, temporary distraction for now, but the aliens had left their mark, and they would be back, probes and all.

They're Coming To Take Me Away!

It looked like it was going to be a regular night.

Seidh climbed into her lovely blue-purple bed like usual after receiving her customary hug from her brother and then waited patiently for Akuja to come in tuck her in. Soon the mother unit had arrived and gave Seidh a kiss to the forehead and pulled the covers over her before getting up and turning off the light and closing her door. The small girl fiddled with the chained earring around her neck for a bit before sighing softly and pulling the covers up to her chin and closing her eyes.

Suddenly she was knee deep in water, in the usual ditch that Turtle Wrastlin was played in. It was a warm, nice day without a cloud in the sky as she dropped some cheerios into the water and waited but she didn’t have to wait long, because soon enough a great number of turtles appeared, all hovering around her ankles as she dropped some more cheerios into the water and then happily reached down to pick one up.

The girl’s lips parted in horror, for instead of coming back up with a turtle, she instead held a little UFO in her hands, with equally tiny aliens staring back at her. Before she could chuck the object a sudden beam of light encircled her and the turtles, and soon she was floating up into the air, turtles and all. Seidh looked up in horror as they were being sucked up into a larger alien space ship, letting go of the mini UFO as it spun and then took off, probably to go lure other children into alien clutches. The small girl then flailed and wiggled, feeling totally and utterly helpless as she was floating up into the air along with the turtles who wiggled their little legs as well.

All too soon it seemed, she was on the space ship itself, surrounded by tall, gangly gray aliens with big, buggy black eyes.

Welcome home, Seidh.” They uttered in eerie tones, causing the girl’s eyes to widen. “T..this isn’t my home…” She whimpered, her voice sounding way too soft, almost as if she didn’t have a voice to speak with and looked about wildly for a means of escape.

The turtles that flown up with her suddenly all riveted their attention on the small girl and they all blinked, only for their eyes to turn big, black and buggy much like the aliens as well. Seidh startled greatly as her lips pulled into an upside down “U” and she shook her head every which way as if it would stop this crazy scenario. One of the aliens then started to approach her, once again eerily uttering, “Welcome home, Seidh.” As its long fingers reached out towards the small girl and was reaching for something in her hair, a zipper. It pulled the zipper down and her hair, skin and clothes fell away to reveal her small form now very much appearing as the aliens she was surrounded by.

The small girl caught many glimpses of this in the reflective surfaces of the alien space ship as she opened her mouth and shrieked-

I’m not an alien!”

She had sat up straight within bed, some of her blankets tossed every which way as the little girl looked about wildly, her chest heaving, and took a bit of comfort in the fact that she was in her room, surrounded by her things, and certainly not surrounded by any aliens.

---

Akuja stirred a bit from her slumber as she felt a little body climb onto her bed and then nestle her way into her arms. The woman blinked a bit sleepily as she moved her arms to better accommodate the small girl and then wrapped them around her, pulling her close as Seidh’s hands grasped into her tank top tightly. “What’s wrong, Seidh?” She murmured softly, against the girl’s purple hair.

I had a bad dream…”

Do you want to talk about it?”

“…No…”

“….Tomorrow?”

“….Okay.”

Akuja smiled a bit as she closed her eyes and kept the small girl there in her arms. “Alright…nothing is going to get you now.” At this reassurance and being her mother’s arms, Seidh was able to drift off into a more peaceful slumber, luckily with no dreams this time.

This Is How Plushes Roll

Akuja led her two children by the hand through the mall, each of the children looking about since they had never been in such a lively environment before filled with many different people and many different stores. The older woman had some things she wanted to pick up and also decided it wouldn’t hurt to get anything that the children so desired within reason. She also figured it would be an interesting experience for them, which was quite right.

Fremere looked around excitedly, his head whipping every which way and she could feel the pull on her hand as he moved to look all around while on her other hand, Seidh was quite as calm as usual, but she looked around with interest. The older woman picked up the items she wanted, and even picked up Fremere a stationery set that the boy had really wanted and was totally enthusiastic once it was in his hands. They walked around the mall a bit more and Akuja looked down at her daughter.

Have you seen anything you wanted, Seidh?” The girl hadn’t voiced or shown any interest at all in anything and Akuja didn’t want to leave the mall without the little girl getting something. Seidh though, just shook her head a bit for honestly there wasn’t anything she wanted right now. The older woman frowned a bit but hey, she wasn’t going to force anything on the little girl, and soon enough they started to head out of the mall to the car. Akuja walked along with the children as Fremere chattered excitedly about who he was going to write his uh…letters to and Seidh listened quietly with a small smile until they passed a window in which something caught her eye.

The little girl paused as she stared into a stuffed animal shop before she was jerked forward by her hold on Akuja, who hadn’t realized she stopped. Akuja’s lips parted a bit in surprised as she stopped and used her hold on Seidh’s hand to stand the girl up right again, apologizing to her only to find her attention locked back onto something. She followed the little girl’s line of sight to a bin within the store that held these rather large, round stuffed animals called Squishables. Oh, did she want one of those? That was rather reasonable, and Akuja was learning that when something caught Seidh’s attention like this, it meant she really wanted it. She shook her hand a bit.

Come on, show me which one you want.”

At this encouragement, the little girl then started to lead the two into the store and over to the bin where the Squishables were. Once there, she pointed to one that was on top of the pile, one that she couldn’t exactly reach. Akuja temporarily let go of both of their hands and then pointed to the cat one, to which she received a shake of the head. The older woman pointed at a few more different ones to which she continued to receive vigorous (almost desperate) head shakes until she took a while guess and pointed at the shark Squishable to which she received a rather vigorous and excited head nod.

The shark one, huh? That surprised Akuja a bit, but she wasn’t going to argue obviously. She plucked the rather large and soft plush down from the pile and then placed it into Seidh’s awaiting arms, where she even made a bit of grabby hands for it (so cute, she thought). She then placed her hands on each of the children’s heads and lead them to the check out counter, where she then paid for the plush. When asked if she would like a bag, Akuja only glanced at Seidh before politely declining, telling the woman that no bag would be necessary. Seidh thanked her mother immensely.

That plush would be quite secure in the little girl’s arms.

---

On the way back home, Akuja glanced into the rearview mirror, catching sight of Fremere looking over his stationery set gleefully, while Seidh sat with her arms wrapped around the large shark plush and her chin resting on the top of it, looking quite content and evening smiling as she looked out the window.

She glanced at the plush before turning her attention back to the road as a thought suddenly came to mind. That plush’s color scheme rather resembled a young man she was met recently…Akuja smirked a bit in the driver’s seat.

That was too cute.

This Is How I Roll - Getting Some Skillz

Some time ago, Seidh had been watching cartoons one morning like usual, when she had seen a commercial on the television for some rollerblades. She watched as the children glided across the cement on these rollerblades, looking like they were having fun and going kind of fast! Her lips had parted a bit in awe and she wiggled from her spot on the floor and after the commercial was over the small girl had gotten up and wandered off to the kitchen to ask her mother about it.

So here they were.

Akuja was standing in the driveway, holding onto Seidh’s hands as the girl was decked out with a helmet, knee and elbow pads (over protective much?) and of course, a set of nice little rollerblades. The small girl’s face held a frown as her legs and knees wobbled, causing the blades at times to slide out in certain directions and she no doubt would have fallen on her face or bottom if it wasn’t for Akuja holding her up by her hands. Those kids on the television made it look so easy!

The older woman chuckled softly, as it was apparent that the small girl wasn’t as excited about this idea now as she was before.

Don’t fret, Seidh.” Akuja encouraged, “It just takes practice, that’s all. Trust me, those kids on the television didn’t know how to skate as well as they did right when they were born. They had to practice too.” The small girl looked up at her mother, still frowning a bit but looking a bit more hopeful. “Really?”

Yes, really.” The older woman replied, “Now for right now, just focus on keeping your legs straight and firm, I’m going to pull you around so you can start to get a feel for it.” At these words, Seidh worked on keeping her legs locked and once she had more or less, Akuja started to slowly pull the small girl over the driveway surface, to which she started to roll. As they moved along the drive way, it was soon time for Akuja to make a turn so she spoke up to the small girl once more. “Okay, now, start to shift your weight to one side a bit, the side that’s going into the turn…and lean, just a little bit in that direction."

Seidh did as she was directed, faltering a bit before catching herself but thanks to her constant hold on Akuja’s hands, she wasn’t getting personal with the ground. Soon enough, she was kind of turning along with Akuja and her frown turned into a small smile at this little victory. Akuja continued to praise and encourage her, and they spent a good while just going around the drive way in loops, working on the girl getting her weight shifting right. For the next step, the woman just had Seidh work on standing still without her feet slipping out from underneath her. Her hands hovered above the small girl and when it looked like she would seriously fall she would reach out and grasp the girl by the elbows, steadying her once more.

Sometime after that, Akuja led Seidh over to her SUV and had the girl brace herself against the vehicle and told her to just work on doing laps around it, on her own. Seidh seemed a bit nervous about that, but she slowly started to work her way around the vehicle, with Akuja walking along beside her every step of the way.

---

Seidh was flopped on the living room floor near the fish tank, staring up at the fish lazily swimming by and a small smile came to her lips as she saw the fish she named Quint swim by. The smile soon faded though as she closed her eyes.

She was worn out and her body hurt! From the few falls to working out some new muscles, the little girl had immediately flopped on the floor as soon as they got back inside, much to her guardian’s amusement. Akuja came back into the living room with a tray that held some steaming mugs of hot chocolate in it, for it was starting to get a little chilly outside. She called out to Fremere who was in his room and came and sat down next to the sprawled out girl.

You did good today.”

“…I did?” Seidh questioned softly, opening her eyes and looking up at Akuja. The older woman gave a nod of her head. “Like I said, its jut going to take some more practice, that’s all. We’ll keep working at it and in no time I’m sure you’ll be good to go.” At this she plucked Seidh’s lavender with flowers mug off of the tray and held it out to the girl.

Seidh pushed herself up off of the floor, wobbling a bit before she was sitting up and took the warm mug into her hands, feeling a sense of accomplishment.

Thank you.”
