--- Akatsuki Dorms ---

User Image

Here is where the members of Akatsuki may rest and retreat to after a hard mission. It has every necessity one may need, including a kitchen, several bathrooms, and a small common living room. A long corridor extends down the length of the dorms, past all the other rooms, which houses the doorways to each member's room. Each member's room is denoted by the same symbol on their ring, which also serves as the 'key' for the room, allowing them to lock their doors if they wish. Each room is about 25x25 ft and are separated from the adjacent rooms by 5 foot solid stone walls and can be furnished however the member wishes. An underground river runs through each of the rooms, which can be heated if chosen. The dorms are in the base, and therefore have no windows, and only a single entrance/exit.

"The world has forgotten the evil of the Bijuu...

Walking through the winding, dim corridors leading through the base, Atsureki noted how empty the base was at the moment. It seemed that he was the only one there, aside from Zenko of course, but as usual she was locked up in her room, where she would in all likelihood remain until Sai's return. Opening the refrigerator, Atsureki scanned its contents for anything he didn't need to cook when he spotted a few leftover rice-balls on a plate. With a shrug, Atsureki took the snack, along with a bottle of water, and started heading towards his room. Lifting his right hand up to the door, Atsureki touched his ring to the large Kanji matching it.

With a rumbling sound, the great stone doorway split down the center, revealing Atsureki's rather spartan living quarters. Aside from a bed, a small writing desk, and a table for him to eat his meals in private, the only furniture in the room was a large scroll stand, mostly empty now. Walking towards the table, Atsureki set down his meal before settling himself onto one of the four cushions at each side of the table. As he ate his meal in silence, Atsureki let his gaze casually wander about his room, always settling upon the scroll case for a few moments before quickly looking away. It was always a source of irritation, how little information he had to look over, and how few opportunities he had gotten to gather more.

After finishing his meal, Atsureki left his room, locking the door behind him as usual, and then made his way back towards the training area. If he could not learn anything new, then at the very least he could continue to prepare for the time when he could.

Konaga Sai

Walking through the cold, dark passageway lit only by a few scarce torches, Sai's pain had finally subsided and he was feeling normal once again, at least in as much as any Konaga could. Still, his mind was set on other things. the time had come to finally begin moving out again, but they had to be careful. the villages had been on lockdown for quite some time, but whispered rumors in the surrounding areas told that the villages were beginning to consider taking missions once again. This could be a chance for them to come into the villages undetected once more and assess their strengths and weaknesses. They also had to find the new hosts.

Mulling all of it over, Sai turned the corner at the split in the passageway, moving off to the right towards the dorms. It was just then that he saw his student, Atsureki, looking more and more like an Akatsuki every day. The boy had grown quite a bit under Sai's tutelage and was far stronger then his typical peers, at least as far as Sai could tell. However, in his typical fashion, Sai simply continued walking, saying nothing as he simply moved past the boy in the hallway, despite the fact that he hadn't seen or talked to him in over a month. Passing by the boy, the two would almost walk past each other in slow motion, but Sai never even allowed his eyes to trail to the side or acknowledge Atsureki's presence, he simply walked past without so much of a nod and continued on towards the kitchen to see if he could find something to eat.

Innately he sensed that Zenko was in the kitchen and was drawn there, but he was in no hurry and simply ambled forward with at a slow pace, his steps echoing in the dark corridors.

"Rules are a binding contract, often, with no loopholes. If you choose to follow them, welcome their restrictions with open arms...

A steady stream of smoke escaped from Zenko's pink lips, joining the already gathering cloud in the air. The room seemed to be in a haze, tinted in gray due to the lack of ventilation for the Akatsuki rooms. Just after the stream ended a sigh followed suit, her chest falling with the expulsion of breath. Her long skirt was draped over the side of the lounging chair within her room, the back of her head resting against a rather soft pillow. In order to keep her purple hair from becoming messy, it was hanging over the top, cascading down its side within an inch of the floor. Ever since she had joined the Akatsuki she hadn't cut her hair, growing it into a length that would sooner get in her way than help with any seduction that she might attempt in the near future. Like Atsureki, she hadn't been doing many things lately in Sai's absence, preferring to just stay in her room and meditate, sometimes smoke, like now. By no means was she a heavy smoker though, nor was she addicted to it, it just relaxed her, and allowed her to think whenever she wanted to. At the present, the only thoughts going through her mind were how Sai seemed to be ignoring her advances. The girl didn't hide that she was interested in him, mainly due to the fact that he shared a common lineage, and the breeze that washed over her in his presence. The only problem with the last bit was that it had all but faded lately, and she wasn't exactly sure why. Nonetheless, she would ask him in the future, since he seemed to be more knowledgeable about their shared genes than she ever would have been.

Just then a familiar presence entered her mind. It was Sai, which meant he was back from whatever it was that he was doing, and he was approaching the base. A smile spread across her face as she tapped the remaining ash from her smoking pipe into a bin, storing the pipe within a pack on her waist. Within a few strides she was at the portal to her room, opening the door, stepping out, and closing it. Not a thought was given to locking it, since she expected that no one would intrude on her privacy. Not that she would mind if Sai ever did, but it wasn't likely, since his interest didn't seem to be at all romantic. Having been so long with the man, she knew that his first destination would be the kitchen. Nodding to herself for her brilliant thinking, Zenko walked to the kitchen, a small urgency in her steps since she knew that the food would need to be prepared quickly. It didn't take long for her to arrive in the kitchen, and begin pulling out pots, and several utensils so that she could cook. Of course, cooking all of the food properly, and adding a lot of spices wasn't exactly on her mind, all that mattered was cooking the food, and getting it on a plate so that Sai could eat. It was one of the 'perks' of being a Konaga, you couldn't enjoy food.

Several minutes later she was hard at work over the stove, boiling the noodles in a strainer while preparing the broth. She wasn't exactly sure if Atsureki had eaten, so she was at least going to make sure the noodles tasted somewhat decent on their own. More minutes passed as she simmered the a large number of fish 'strips' in a pan, another sizable mass of noodles being boiled inside of the strainer. Again, ten minutes passed, and she removed the noodles, preparing them in a rather big bowl, and placing it on the table at the chair Sai usually used. Letting the fish cook a bit more before removing it, she placed them on the cutting board and chopped them up. Once that was done, she placed them upon a plate rather fancily, moving the dish to the table and setting it alongside the giant bowl of noodles. Taking a moment to withdraw a pair of chopsticks from a drawer and place them next to the two large portions of food, she sat in a chair next to where she had placed the wood, and waited paitently for Sai. Not a moment too soon had she finished all of the food, since she could send that the man was already quite close to the kitchen. Her mind had been elsewhere while cooking, and she lightly rapped her head, having let her thoughts stray. He most likely wouldn't be pleased if he had to wait for food because she lost track of time.

"The world has forgotten the evil of the Bijuu...

Even as Atsureki rounded the corner of the corridor leading to the training grounds, he could already feel the immense presence of chakra that he had come to recognize as his master, Konaga Sai, the leader of the Akatsuki. As the man came into view, Atsureki's eyes quickly locked onto him, quite the contrast to the casual way in which the Konaga ignored him. As the two of them passed without so much as a sign of recognition, Atsureki clenched his hand into a fist as he ground his teeth in frustration. Stopping in the middle of the hallway, Atsureki did not turn as he said in a voice of barely repressed rage, "Master Sai, I have been meaning to speak with you concerning the progress of my training." Turning only after he had finished speaking, Atsureki's pupil-less eyes bored into the back of the Flash Blade's head, brimming with the defiance and angst only seen in youth.

... I intend to help them remember."

No matter how much his pupil might have been trying to hide his anger, Sai didn't miss any of it. His voice, even when repressed raged of dissatisfaction and given the young boy's age, such feelings often turned quickly into anger and violence. Naturally, Atsureki had more sense then to allow violence to explode from him, especially toward Sai, but clearly his student would follow him into the kitchen even if Sai ignored him. Stopping in his tracks, a single footstep resonated off the spartan walls of the dormitory area as Sai stood motionless, his back still turned to Atsureki. What the boy said next would define a lot and say even more to Sai about his readiness as an Akatsuki then even the young boy could know. Defiance after all was an interesting show of someone's character.

"Oh?..." Sai said with average volume and a cold and uncaring tone, as he paused and allowed his single word to tear into Atsureki and test his resolve. Without even removing his right hand from his pocket, Sai twisted to the right slightly, as he turned his head, glancing back at Atsureki, looking at the boy almost completely in his peripheral vision. "Well then, by all means my young student... speak." Sai's words carried with them a strange venom, even within his emotionless tone. The words themselves would be heavy enough to ruffle the young boy's spirit if he had any apprehension of speaking up to his master or questioning his methods. Atsureki would know that Sai could break him in an instant if he wanted and with that kind of a thought rolling around in someone's mind... defiance did not always come easy.

Silence would fill the hall quickly, only the cold drips of some of the water that fell from the ceilings piercing the void between Atsureki and Sai's conversation. Sai of course, remained motionless, his gaze piercing through the young boy even in his peripherals as he waited to see what his promising young student would say.

"The world has forgotten the evil of the Bijuu...

As his master's cool response reached him, it was all Atsureki could do not to take a step back, to put distance between himself and the monster with whom he was speaking. But to show weakness now would only serve to prove the very opposite of what he was trying to prove, there would be no backing down now. Atsureki took a small moment to compose himself as his he locked eyes with the deadly Konaga, releasing his fist beneath his long sleeves and trying to make himself relax long enough to say what he needed to say, preferably without having any of his bones broken... or worse. "Sai-Sensei, I have been training beneath this mountain for nearly two years now, but we still have almost no information on the bijuu and the new jinchuuriki," Atsureki said, his tone a mixture of exasperation and annoyance, "but if you would just let me accompany you on your next outing I might be able to lead us to one of them. Did you not stop me in that desert so that I might help you find the jinchuuriki, are these eyes not a tool that the we should use?"

Sai was glad to see that Atsureki had enough sense to calm down his tone of anger to one of annoyance and impatience, a true sign of the young shinobi's age and inexperience. However, what did please him was that Atsureki understood his role in the organization and wished to fulfill it. Still, there was much he did not understand. Despite all his cruelty however, Sai was not actually an unreasonable man and he understood the young shinobi's concern. The rift between how Sai thought and how others thought however was that Sai had no feelings of compassion with which his answer might make Atsureki feel better. "...and what is a sword without a sharpened edge, Atsureki?... and what good is that sword when your enemy is at a distance?"

Sai allowed the words to linger in the air, a purposely random question addressed to the boy to throw him off, but one which would illustrate his point later. he waited for a few seconds until it seemed that Atsureki might respond, but Sai then quickly cut him off. "A sword is a tool of war, but as with all tools it fulfills a specific purpose. More important then that purpose however is the tool itself. If the sword is not sharp, it cannot perform it's roll when the time comes. It is a useless tool. Likewise with the approaching army, the time for the sword has not yet come. A tool must be used at the proper time for the proper purpose, or the effort and energy associated with it's use is wasted on inefficiency. So, what does one do in the meantime? They maintain the tool, sharpen it, and train it so that when the day comes when the army is finally in front of you, the sword is ready to cut them down."

Again, Sai allowed for some silence to fill the room, before he turned his head again, simply leaving Atsureki to his thoughts continued walking towards the kitchen. Just a few feet from the kitchen, he offered one last thought to his student as he continued his slow walk away from him, never bothering to turn around or make eye contact again... "However long you think you have been waiting to obtain information on the Bijuu, or locate the jinchuuriki, just remember that I have been waiting longer... and even longer still for my visions of the future to come true." With that, he turned and walked into the kitchen only to stop suddenly again as he say a meal splayed out on the kitchen table, Zenko waiting patiently for him in the chair next to the chair he normally sat in, which the food was rather obviously placed in front of for him.

Had anyone else set the meal before him, he likely would have ignored the effort and made his own food despite the fact that he knew it was for him, simply to crush the spirit of the one providing it. However, this was Zenko. She was the only link he had ever found to understanding himself, and the only person in this world to have ever been perceived as 'real' to him amidst the vast haziness that was his perception of all around him. "What is all this?" Sai asked simply as he remained standing in the doorway, staring at her, knowing full well why she had done it. But still, he wished to hear her response. Something about her always drew Sai to interacting with her more then others and he was always intrigued to hear what she would say on matters. Her's was a voice of clarity erupting from a well of pain, just like his own. Perhaps that's why he wished to hear her speak, simply to hear a voice of familiarity... it was strangely soothing.

"Rules are a binding contract, often, with no loopholes. If you choose to follow them, welcome their restrictions with open arms...

When Zenko sensed that Sai had stopped moving, in the hallway no less, the edges of her lips were tugged downward as she frowned. Gradually, voices began to drift down the stone hallway into the kitchen, both of which were easily identified as Atsureki, the young Hyuuga that Sai had picked up some time before she had joined, and Sai himself. The exact words of the change were lost upon her ears, since she didn't exactly feel that it was important, but it was certainly clear, even from this difference, the frustration that Atsureki felt. He didn't have the ability to vent like she did, and to her, he didn't look like the type to play with others as she sometimes did with Sai. The exchange didn't last long, and just a few seconds after it ended the man she had been waiting for appeared at the door of the kitchen, crystal clear in his usual stoic demeanor. No evidence of the frown which previously worn on her face was left, in it's place, a warm smile.

That was, until he had questioned the meal she placed before him. Once more her expression change, this time into a somewhat hurt look with a playful pot. Her hand drew near to herself to aid in this effort. "You don't like it that I cooked for you?" She asked, immediately afterward reverting back to the smile she held before, explaining away. "Well, I thought that since you've been away for so long on another one of your trips, that I should cook for you. It takes quite a bit to prepare the generous amount of food needed to sate my appetite, much less yours. Would hate to have you wait even longer to eat. Besides, isn't it the job of the wife to cook for her man once he gets home from his job? I would clean too, but everyone here is rather disciplined." During the time in which she spoke, Zenko moved her elbows onto the table and laced her fingers together, lightly resting her chin upon the bridge created by the weave. When the last words left her curved lips, she was going to wink at the shinobi before her, but circumstances decided go against her painful nature. Instead of just one eye, both fluttered closed as she visibly tensed, grinding her teeth in an effort to refrain from making noise. The pain spiked unexpectedly as if it meant to prevent her from further flirting with Sai, completely killing her mood, and lancing through her muscles in mere seconds. However minor the moment was, when her eyes opened and she came out of it, newly found exhaustion was sprinkled along her body.

Visibly, nothing was changed despite the spike, although Zenko did feel slower, weaker.

Sai made no reaction to Zenko's playful expressions of 'disappointment' at his questioning the meal. Despite her attractive appeal, such obviously fake attempts to manipulate didn't really work on Sai, but still, even he had trouble resisting it. It had always been clear that Zenko had an attraction, whether it be real, or simply a game for her to play, Sai didn't know, but nothing in his personality was going to let her know of an reciprocation one way or the other. Sai wasn't heartless, but he was damned close, and anything and everything he had ever even remotely cared about in his life had been taken away from him, or had betrayed him utterly. By now, his very being was far too jaded and scarred to understand the concepts of trust or of a real relationship. Yet still, his bloodline drew him to her constantly.

Walking over to the table as she spoke, Sai sighed at Zenko's use of the word 'Wife' and 'Her man' so casually, passing it off once again as her typical flirtations. taking up the chopsticks, he turned his head to look at her as she was about to rest her chin on her interlaced hands when he saw what would be a playful wink turn into a face of agony. He recognized it immediately for what it was, but didn't move at all, he just shoveled more of the tasteless cooked fish into his mouth as Zenko was left to deal with her pain alone. For an instant, the urge to comfort her with a touch crossed his mind, but his jaded sensibilities tore the idea to shreds almost immediately and he simply went on eating. After her pain had passed for the time, he then spoke...

"I suppose it's true that a wife does cook for 'her man'... but to use that phrase to describe this I think would require you to actually be someone's wife... don't you think?" The comment was cold, but it wasn't meant to be. It was Sai's own form of witty repartee and he scoffed at his own words, grinning slightly, if you could even call the way the edges of his mouth curled up evilly a 'grin'. "Cooking is well and good, but I hope that you have been applying yourself well and training hard in my absence. The time is almost upon us to begin searching again and the two of us will be traveling together. Have you been keeping up with your skills?"

"Rules are a binding contract, often, with no loopholes. If you choose to follow them, welcome their restrictions with open arms...

Not at all put off by Sai's response to her words, and ignoring the fact that he paid no attention to her pain, she continued playing her 'game.' "Mmm... I most certainly do, however, wedding myself to the man who I have in mind would only hinder my ability to flaunt that which I am most proud of, and apt to use in a fight to gain an edge. Maybe in the future when his goals have been met, but not now, it would only serve as a distraction." Zenko paused, allowing Sai to speak again. When it came to him, she was actually happy that they shared a common lineage, that she had to bear this pain, because it formed a connection that otherwise wouldn't have existed between the two of them. She was quite sure that he saw her with the clarity that she could see him, and even though the rush from the first time they had met had all but faded, her interest had only grown. However, he was proving to be a tough egg to crack, since, disregarding his largely stoic personality, he hadn't told her much, if anything at all of his history.

This time her plans went through as they should have, a seductive wink being produced her right eye. Her arms slipped from the hard surface of the table, and folded themselves onto her lap, allowing her to assume a rather straight, and 'royal' posture. "I would like to think that the only skill I needed to 'train' was my physique, but it's not. I have been keeping up with my training during your leave, and I'm quite confident that I've just about mastered the taijutsu style that I had taken with me after leaving Otogakure before we first met. Jutsu wise, I will admit that I haven't learned as much that I have wanted too, since my focus has been on our abilities, and the taijutsu." The report of her training could have been deemed as soldier-like to a degree, if it wasn't for the constant smooth tone pervading her speech, a side-effect of her rather large emphasis on her sexual ability.

Zenko was an interesting person in many ways to Sai, namely in how she could be so much like him, yet so different at the same time. To consider using one's looks was absurd to him, nor would he think such a tactic would ever work on him. then again, Zenko had quite the form, so if it was going to work for anyone, Sai would be forced to think that it would work for her. As to her comments, he simply let out a brief "Hmmph" as he finished the plate of fish in front of him and moved to the bowl of noodles, taking a large bite, chewing and swallowing quickly as if he were in a hurry.

"There would be no reason that you could not flaunt yourself effectively in combat were you to be married. Part of man's corruption is to constantly want what they 'cannot' have, and married women are no exception to the rule. I would imagine such tactics would be fairly effective either way. The trick is not to be distracted yourself by others... a task not so difficult for you or I, at least in dealing with the rest of the world." It was a strange dichotomy to see Sai speak in the Akatsuki base as compared to when he was on the field. In combat, he hardly spoke at all, seeing words as a useless exchange when your goal is to kill someone... using them only sparingly when needed. Speaking with the other members of the Akatsuki however was important, and even he understood that as a leader, so he forced himself to. With Zenko however, the action was never forced.

As his fellow Konaga continued speaking of herself, Sai glanced at her in his peripherals when she assumed her new posture and continued on. the glance would be quick, but obvious, ending immediately after it began as he turned back to his soup and took another large bite, listening intently to what Zenko had developed in his time away. He was glad to hear that she had developed her Taijutsu skills and her Augmentations at the very least... jutsu comes with time and she would be traveling with Sai either way, so he could supplement her weaknesses well enough. "Well clearly you have developed your 'physique' quite well, let's just hope your other skills line up. Either way you'll be traveling with me, so sufficed to say, you will not have to worry as much about handling your opponents. You will be expected to perform on your own of course, but I would not allow harm to come to you if it could be helped. You are too valuable to be risked fully."

Continuing on with his eating, Sai seemed to show no emotion in the words he spoke, yet they could easily have been interpreted differently. In the end, Sai had lived his life in constant pain which never ceased, never knowing or finding anyone else who could explain it to him. In finding Zenko, he found a link which he had never had, a conduit through which he could learn of himself and discover new things about himself. She was precious to him and he would risk no harm to her for fear of losing the only person he had ever felt any true connection to along with any hope he had in understanding himself. Even within his jaded and twisted reality, Sai understood the importance of that bond.

"The world has forgotten the evil of the Bijuu...

Wincing as his master's words bit into him, as sharp as any knife, Atsureki's fragile self-control nearly crumbled as he locked eyes with his master. Clenching his jaw as his pale eyes shot dagger at the man, Atsureki opened his mouth as if to speak when his master abruptly continued. Finger's tightening into fists, Atsureki turned his head to the side as Sai spoke, preferring to stare at the wall than stare at his master and risk losing the tenuous control he had on the anger burning in his chest. As cold silence filled the air, Atsureki turned his head to meet his Master's eye once again, to angry to do anything more than stare defiantly. As his master finally turned to leave, Atsureki turned on his heel as well, tossing his long ponytail over his shoulder with a snap of his head. As the Konaga's final words echoed behind him, Atsureki ground his teeth too keep himself from screaming back at the man.

Stalking through the halls of the base, Atsureki could sense that both Sai and Zenko were together in the kitchen, their chakra signatures like two great bonfires compared to his own small flame. Always Sai had shown the girl favor, because of their shared lineage and the small relief from the pain they felt in each-other's presence. If she had asked Sai to take her with him, there was no doubt that he would have complied. Frustrated and bitter, Atsureki continued through the dark corridors on his way to the training room, he needed to let off some steam, and the best way to do that would be to hit something, hard.

... I intend to help them remember."

"Rules are a binding contract, often, with no loopholes. If you choose to follow them, welcome their restrictions with open arms...

"Oh? Are you speaking from experience?" She asked, nodding afterward at his last comment. "Of course." Was all she added after quieting herself, listening attentively as he continued to speak. Her posture once again grew lax as she continued to listen, falling into a rather seductive pose, if that was even possible, while sitting next to Sai. It wasn't intentional on her part, just another side effect of her self-pampering. Many times it had become a useful tool for her when she hadn't even meant to be, and that was all she required for it to be forced into habit. She liked to think that it would never work on her, and it didn't, but he was another matter entirely, as sometimes, she couldn't stop her gaze from occasionally wandering about his form, at least, what she could see of it. Her attraction went beyond just feelings for her, mainly due to her practiced nature.

The words 'you'll be traveling with me' snapped Zenko's attention back to Sai, her appearance visibly perking as a genuinely happy smile spread across her face. It was a controlled smile of course, not growing as wide as it would on a fool, but a smile nonetheless. "We'll be traveling?" She questioned. It was not often that he would take either her, or Atsureki anywhere out of the base, if at all, the prospect of roving the country with him was almost romantic to her, since it would be a break from the military-style home that she longed to break from. She was content with it though, since it meant that she could continue to be with him, and bothering him with silly things like wanting to travel was never something she wanted to do. It wasn't like she expected to go outside soon, since one could never guess what Sai was going to do until he told you.

... I'll just sit over there, and revel in my complete freedom."

As Zenko spoke, her body sloping down from her postured position, Sai couldn't help but watch, but was quickly interrupted from his stare by a wave of pain which came over him, striking him hard and fast. Doing all he could not to show weakness in front of another, Sai gripped the table as his eyes closed, fluttering quickly as he braced himself against the agony which flooded through his veins like acid. His grip tightening on the table, he ended up shaking the entire structure, as he forced himself to breathe once again through gritted teeth. Then, like a fleeting wind, the pain subsided and his faculties returned to him, but once more, he felt himself weakened by the experience.

Having already finished his soup, Sai got up, not bothering to clean his place, figuring Zenko would do it for him as he spoke. "Yes, naturally I would have you travel with me. I wouldn't have it any other way. Be ready to leave in the morning. I will come for you early." Those simple words being said, Sai walked out of the kitchen, his cold demeanor demanding that he not linger for any chance of attempted cheering up or sympathy to come from Zenko. To allow such would be to admit weakness which was not something he planned to do. Now all that was left was to inform Atsureki that they would be leaving.

Sai treated the entire earlier scene as a test to see a bit of Atsureki's character. He was brave enough to speak his mind, but still wise enough not to push his luck. Clearly the boy's patience needed work, but it was about time to see just how far the child's skills had progressed, and Sai had no intention of learning it here in the base. He would throw Atsureki into the world to see if the young man was ready. "We will see if his youthful angst can yet be molded into the proper conduits and be useful to us."
