Diablo paced around the clearing, muttering to himself as usual. Had to find it, had to find it, had to get it, had to get it, had to bring it to...to...
And that was what he couldn't remember. "Damnit!" Diablo bellowed at himself. "You're so stupid!" Then, a second later, in a meek, cowardly voice, "No, I'm n-not! I'll remember..."
Then it was silent again, apart from the occasional muttering. Why couldn't he remember! It was important, he was going to die if it didn't get done, he was sure of it! He needed it!
"Hey!" Diablo shouted as something moved through the trees. "You!" Diablo ran fulltilt towards the shadow -- except it wasn't a shadow at all, it was another Modifox. A female Modifox.
"You! Do you know--" Diablo cut himself off, looked pained, then in the smaller, meeker voice, "Um...do you know where it--Don't tell her what it is! She'll take it back to him herself!" Diablo said, his features shifting as rapidly as his voice. He looked angry, now, his black eyes burning with angry, jealous flame.
"No she won't! She's a nice ladyfox!" He paused, then looked to the purple and blue fox cautiously, "...Aren't you?"

It was a nice day in the Lunarie lands, and Anja had decided to just take a walk. She'd eaten not too long ago, the moonlight was out in full force...what was to be upset about?
She stepped through a thick grouping of trees, and was immediately cut off by a bright red fox she had never seen before. Stunned, she absently listened to him ramnbling, realizing that he was using two different voices.
...What?
Very confused, Anj ventured to say: "Yes, I'm nice. I won't hurt you, or take anything to...him," she said reassuringly. She had a feeling he was a bit...off..but it was best to play along rather than upset him further.

"Oh, oka-What are you doing, you fool? That's exactly what he would tell her to say! She needs to d-" Diablo looked murderous for a moment, then positively terrified. "N-no! She said she's nice!"
Diablo took a step back, shaking his head desperately. "Can't tell her, won't tell her, get in...won't tell her...but what if she knows?" Again, his voice and features shifted, his body tensed and his teeth barred. "Then kill her, he said that nobody should know. This is what he meant! It is a test, kill her!"
"N-no! She said she's nice, like Lei, and she wouldn't--I don't care about your stupid sister! Get rid of--I'm so sorry, nice ladyfox, I can't..." But he was inching forward, looking sad and apologetic, but resigned and coming closer all the same.

...What?
Anj backed away from this weirdo as he moved closer, having only comprehended the word 'kill'. "Look, I don't know about any tests, but I'm not bad or anything...I mean, I'm just part of a tribe. Maybe you've heard of it? Lunarie? We're a calm tribe, we don't trick people..."
She had a feeling this wasn't going to work.
What was she supposed to do? She couldn't attack him, she'd sworn off of hurting others. But he was clearly unstable, and was talking about killing her!
No, no. She wouldn't attack him. If he lunged for her maybe, but she wouldn't until then. Maybe she could help him...
Soothingly, she added: "Let me help you. What's your name? You don't need to kill me, I promise. Who's Lei? Maybe I can take you to her..."

The scent of an intruder, carried to him on the night air, brought Ari here, to the border of the tribe lands. As he had followed the new scent, he had gradually picked up one that was more familiar to him. He'd hoped that it was old, that she wasn't really there, that he wouldn't have to deal with her--he was stuck with her, so, since he couldn't banish her as he wanted, he was stuck with the next best option, which was avoiding her like the plague.
But no, Anjafey was definitely there. As well as some red fox Ari had never seen before in his life. Someone new for the tribe?
But as he got closer, he could hear what the red male was saying--even though none of it made any sense. Ari twitched an ear, causing his indurstial piercings to clank against each other, wondering if he had lost the ability to hear properly.
And see properly, too: the red male was approaching--no, stalking toward--Anjayfey, and she was...doing nothing? No, not that--he was trying to calm HIM down! Was he dreaming? Hallucinating? Could any of this possibly be real?
Ari decided he'd worry about that later. Right now, as far as he could see, there was a crazy fox who could very well be a threat to his tribe, and so must be dealt with.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?" Ari challenged, as he stepped into the moonlight, and approached the pair.
"What happened?" he grudgingly asked Anjafey, not sure if he could get a straight answer out of the crazy fox or not.

For the first time since she was young, Anja was glad to see Ari. He was significantly bigger than her and this stranger, and he could properly take the red male down if it came to it. She probably wouldn't have killed him even if he attacked; her determination to never hurt another fox was stronger than her survival instinct these days.
She edged closer to her Elder, but not too close. They were hardly friends, after all. "I'm not sure," she confessed, perplexed and alarmed. "I was just taking a walk, and I stumbled across him. He's been talking to himself about giving something to 'him' and how I was a test or something...one of the...sides to him...was convinced I was some sort of trick and wants the other to kill me for it."
It certainly didn't make any sense saying it outloud.
"He's been stalking forward for a few minutes. I tried to calm him down and I offered to help, but he's not listening. I have to keep backing away, and he keeps coming closer."
She eyed the red male critically. "He doesn't really want to hurt me, Ari. I think maybe just you could...scare him off? He's unbalanced, but he doesn't need to be hurt for it...."

Diablo skittered about ten feet away when Ari came into view, his teeth bared and his body tense.
"You promised!" He screeched at Anja, his voice some strange cacophony of the two voices. "You said you were nice! What else are you going to do! You promised!" And then, his body relaxed and his eyes had that evil glint again, and he lowered his body to the floor, like he was getting ready to pounce something.
"That's okay, he won't mind a little detour, will he? No, I don't think so...especially if they know...yes, they must know...can't let them stop me..." Diablo was slowly creeping forward, his eyes completely locked on the purple fox.
"I know what to do for this test!" Diablo bellowed as he lunged for the purple vixen...and missed completely. He actually sailed right over her head.
"Curse you!" Diablo shouted when his head emerged from the bushes he was in. It would've been comical except it sounded like he really believed he was cursing her.
"Please...stop..." The voice was a whimper again, afraid and alone. "She said she'd help..." And then the crueler voice was back. "And she brought him here, didn't she! She's a liar, she can't be trusted!"
"But I like her..." Diablo whined softly to himself. "Then get rid of her!" He answered, his voice stern. After a few moments of silence, his meek voice said again, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." as he started climbing out of the bushes, his claws extended.

It took a bit of thinking, but Ari finally managed to sort through what Anjafey had said. Well, sort though enough that he wasn't standing there, staring blankly, mouth open, gaping like a fish anymore, which was good enough for him.
Any other day, he'd disbelieve Anjafey about 'trying to calm him down' and 'I have to keep backing away' and 'he doesn't really need to be hurt'. Except Ari had seen Anjafey doing just that with his own two eyes, before she had known he was there.
But before Ari could try to puzzle that one out, the red fox sprang at Anjafey.
What he should have done, he realized a moment later, as he watched the red fox thrashing around in the bushes, was he should have gotten in the way of the red fox, gotten him away from Anjafey. It was only by the sheerest, stupidest luck that the red fox hadn't actually hurt her.
So, he didn't get along with her at all, or even much like her, but she was still part of his tribe, and as her elder, he still owed her that much--the very least he could do, the very least he should have done was knock the red fox out of the way.
Ari forced himself to take a few steps forward, so he was between Anjafey and the red fox. Forced himself to tell her: "You should get out of here before he attacks again." Tried to not think about how, if Anjafey were to die, a bunch of his problems were to be solved. No, actually, that'd bring up a bunch more for when Kazuki came back, if he'd allowed Kazuki's best friend to die.
Ari turned back to the red fox, not wanting to fight at all, but knowing he would likely have to. "Get out of here. Now." As an afterthought, he added, "before I make you."

Anja yelped in surprise when the red fox lunged for her, exhaling a short breath of relief when he totally missed. Apparently insanity did little for aim. After a cautious moment she managed to stand straight on all four legs, watching Diablo.
Ari spoke again, and she glanced at him out of the corner of her eye. He was right. Besides, she couldn't take on this clearly sick fox; she couldn't injure him herself.
"As you wish, Ari," she nodded, slowly backing away.
To the red fox, she said truthfully: "I'm sorry. I wish I could help you." Not with his test maybe, but with his sickness. It pained her to see him so miserable.
But before the angry voice could come after her again, Anja ran from scene, desperate to put distance between her and the poor red fox.

"No!" The strangled howl that emerged from the red fox's throat was a mix of anger and frustration and just plain agony as Diablo watched the purple vixen run away. "You said you would help! This is your fault!" Diablo spat, the first sentence directed towards the retreating girl, plaintive and pathetic, while the second was accompanied by a harsh glare and a barring of the teeth at the big blue one.
He had to finish, he had to find it and he had to...
"Come back!" Diablo interrupted himself, running oddly in the opposite direction that the purple vixen had run--but only to get a wide berth between himself and blue fox. "You said you would help!" Diablo howled again once he was far enough away. He spotted her again, blue and purple mixing as she ran, trying to get far far away from him.
"Stop running! I won't--it won't hurt! Stop running!" Diablo ordered, his voice harsh again at the last word as he got close enough to bite at her tail. "Why did you bring him to us! You said you were nice! You can't be trusted! I hate you I hate you I hate you!"

The male's teeth around her tail sent Anja crashing headfirst into the dirt, leaving them a tangle mass of limbs. She quickly scrambled out from under him, not wanting to be dinner.
Clearly this wasn't going to be easy. The male was determined, and he was fast.
With a sigh Anj pounced the male, pinning him hard to the ground. He was frenzied, which left him vulnerable. All she had to do was press her paws into his pressure points and try very hard to stay away from those teeth.
"Listen to me," she panted, her voice much softer than the position she held him in. "I want to help you, but I can't do that while you're trying to kill me." She was talking in muted, comforting tones, hoping the nice side would listen to her.
"I am a carer, lost one. I take care of the sick and the lonely. If you'll let me, I can try and help you. But you have to listen to me very cloesly, okay? I need your gentle side to just take control for awhile. I swear I will not hurt...either of you."
She released a little bit of the pressure on the sensitive areas. "Now, on the count of 3, I'm going to get off of you, okay? If you attack me again, I will have no choice but to run, and my Elder there will be forced to take action."
Pah. Ari would have to drag himself into helping her. He would, he was a good Elder in that respect, but...well. She was starting to sound repetitive about Ari's disdain.
"But if you'll sit still and just talk to me, young one, I will do my best to help you. Okay? I promise. Now...1, 2, and 3..."
Anj carefully stepped off of the male and back up a few steps, just to stay out of range if the raging side took over. "Now, then. I've told you my name. Why don't you tell me yours?" Again, a soothing, gentle, motherly tone. Anja wasn't the vixen Ari thought she was.
