Scenario 1 --> A few weeks ago, my friends and I were sitting at our lunch table, and right outta the blue Nat goes, "I'm gonna ask Mr. D if I can play piccolo next year!" So naturally I was like scream 'cuz I've been talking about how I WANT TO PLAY THE PICCOLO next year for, literally, the past three months. But after school I went and asked him and he said yeah, if I'm first chair next year (WHICH I WILL BE because I'm the highest-chaired seventh grade flute in honor band).
Scenario 2 --> And then today Nat says, "should I buy a piccolo?" I was just thinking, have I not gotten it through your head that it's MY rightful place to play picc? gonk
And by the way, it seriously really is my rightful place because I've been working my butt off since fifth grade just to be sure that I land that position. Also, we're the only seventh graders in honor band. She's seventh [last] chair (and has been almost all year, except for one time when she got sixth because one girl wasn't at school on the test day) and I'm third chair. So I think that I deserve it more, unless she beats me next year. Which, in that case, she can feel free to play piccolo.
Yeah... just had to get that outta my system. Comments on my big wall of text? 4laugh

Oh, I love ranting in here. I can talk about how I'm the only person in band who knows what they're doing and it doesn't get blocked!

If you dont and become first chair (section leader) your section will hate you. and you will have no control over your section and it will be your fault. stare keep being greedy and self centered, see where it gets you.

Stop putting words in my mouth. She obviously does work her butt off, since she's in honor band as a seventh grader as well. But I obviously work my butt off harder than her because I am third chair. 3: I was discouraging her from buying a picc because it'll be a waste of money if she doesn't get first chair, since we only ever have one piccolo. 4: I know what a section leader is. Don't think that seventh grader is synonymous with stupid. 5: This was a rant so I can get my feelings out so neither Nat nor my section hates me. 6: Keep being so judgmental and see where that gets ya. mrgreen

I concur. You never know, she may be better at piccolo than she is at flute. I don't see where she implied that 7th graders are stupid. How in the world was she being judgmental? And if you have more than one piccolo, middle school or high school, they tend to be pretty out of tune.

We only have four flutes in my band and they trade off for piccolo for certain music, mainly pep band. They're almost never out of tune either, even when three of them play the piccolo and one play the flute or all of them play piccolo. My band is pretty strict on tuning though. Though, for my band I've been a little mad considering that the other two clarinet players (yeah, there's only three clarinets too) make no effort whatsoever and are really terrible yet they get all the harder and better parts. My teacher is like "well, you have to share!" Though, it has gotten better lately ... just had to rant too. lol.

u already told her u want to play piccolo. although u were trying to save nat some money, it wouldnt hurt for her to learn the piccolo anyways, but if she only wanted it if she could play it next yr then maybe she should've rented? if you guys both turn out to be really good, maybe your BD would let you both play it...
As to being section leader, i think it doesn't matter much if they like or hate u as long as they respect you and your skills and listen. Trying to take over what you had already put your eyes on does not sound like she respects you much or believes that you are the best. neutral
