Is it just my school, or is every school's rent-out instruments peices of crap? Our school has 2 bass clarinets, and 5 players. heart One plays the contra, and the other owns, but Provie, Lana and I get the school instruments, and the bass clarinet that use isn't even from my school, it's from our sister middle school crying
I think because of this overload of bassie players (I stubernly refused to be forced to learn the bassoon) that our BD spends his money on usless sound systems insted of fixing our bassies. And, GOD, are they bad. xp They take and hour to properly warm up, my optive key choses when it wants to work (which is rare) and don't get me started about the mold. I've gotten into the habbit of avoidng looking at the inside. My BD thinks I'm paranoid with all of the problems that I come to him with. redface
I just wanna know if anyone else has some interesting stories about their school instruments, and not just their issues.

I own my clarinet and flute, but I borrow the school's tenor sax.
D: It's really disgusting and rusty and old.
But I luffles it nonetheless.

Our bass clarinets and other instruments actually work pretty good. Well most of them anyway. Mine works fine and I only had to get my bd to send it away for repairs once, and the one my friend uses now works good.

We have 4, and I think 3 of them work fine. The fourth one is pretty bad though. The one that my friend used last year had couldn't play a g because the f key had to be duct taped down for it to stay closed. I think it still has the neon pink duct tape on it.

The bari saxes break all the time though, but the players leave them out of the cases. I'm surprised more aren't broke since the teacher lends them out for free over the summer to band students.

I use a trumpet from the middle school for marching band because my BD was nice enough to lend it to me so I don't use my expensive one { this was when I went to high school - in tenth grade naow }.

It isn't even nice enough to be called a piece of trash, but it serves its purpose.

My baritone is so crappy... I love it to death though.
No matter what, its valves will stick. I've put whole bottles on that first valve and today it was sticking again.

I used to use a school horn that was wayyyyy to big for me (if your a horn player than you know how big conn 8Ds are) so it was impossible for me to play high and in tune. now I use my aunts old horn which is molding, and in everyway dirty and disgusting, but its an amazing horn minus its hygeine and even though my allergies go crazy while playing it I still prefer it over the school horn

I'v had sooo many school trumpets, my first had no case and I had to carry it around in an old carrier bag.
Another one I had, turned suddenely went missing and after a few weeks, the teachers said it actually belonged to someone who left school and came back to collect it.
We went through tonnes of old instruments, and trust me, a digerydoo with mould growing inside it, and a clarinet with a mouldy reed, someone has snapped half a key off one of our keyboards, our glockenspiels have missing keys aswell.
Yet, I still really love our music department!!
It's great!! On open evenings, all us music geeks pull together and help out by sticking posters and big sheets of brightly coloured paper over the holes in the walls XD.

I own my own Flute + Piccolo, but I use my school's Trombone and Tuba.

My Trombone is in bad condition. -.- It has no bumper rubber, and the metal is coming off nearby the spit valve. I love it though.

My Tuba is in okay condition, it has 40 dents, nothing major, and maybe a dent in the the tuning slides, but nothing too big.. [If you saw the bottom of my Tuba.. ._. It looks like when you crumple aluminum foil..] Then if has a few dents in the throat of the bell, and a HUGE dent on the rim of the bell, which makes it impossible to put on the floor by it's bell.. Otherwise, I love it. <3

I would never use the school's instruments. The flutes usually have something wrong with them. So I finally got one on Ebay. but oh God, yknow how long it took me to actually use it? Like over 3 weeks... but that's a different subject. One of my school's tuba's is soooo bent up, I'm like why don't you buy a new one?! Well sadly, our band is way in debt. Plus all our school instruments are usally hand-me-downs from NC A&T. _-_

I have my own horn...it's not the best (Yamaha beginner trumpet YTR 3225), but I love it. I'm thinking of upgrading to a Xeno in the near future, except it's really the player that makes the horn sound good, so...*shrug* I'll figure it out soon.

but the horn does change the quality of the sound. some are more closed off than others while some are really open sounded. its just based on what type and company made it.

Our High School Instruments aren't actually that bad. (There are a couple of really old ones, but not that many) My school tuba is pretty nice. The side oppisate the bell is kind crumpled, but other wise It's alright.

That's saying something, considering up until high school, the school instruments were horrible. One of the tuba's in middle school had such a flat bottom that you could set it on the ground and it would stay there. No turning it on it's bell or anything. stare
