Any tips for an 8th grader who got put in pit in marching band marching band cause our BD needed more people for the show question

get ready to stand for long periods of time and be punished for what the rest of the band does.

Be ready to be the last one in the building cause all the marchers are walking sluggishly in your way

Be ready to pull xylaphones and bass drums and marimbas and tempeni through streets filled with traffic

Make sure to have water and sun screen and I mean alot of it.

Make sure to wear a hat but also make sure you can see the director and drum majors

Make sure you memorize your music and will be able to play it for at least 3 mind numbing hours if not more during practice.

make sure you have patience enough to work on 5 measures of music for 30 minutes

Make sure not to complain if your hurting but also know your physical limits if you feel you're gonna faint sit down and get a drink of water for a few minutes till you feel better.....you can always explain to the BD after practice

Make sure if you play more then one instrument you'll be able to reach in in as short as one measure cause you'll do that alot so place your instruments in close proximity but also convinent to the others who might have to weave through the pit.

Make sure you never talk down to an upper classmen. they may be yelling at you but don't block them out they're only trying to help you.

ok edit

Be sure to be to practice early and then stay latre

be ready to be dedicated cause I can assure you that between band and school you won't have time for a social life

be ready to be in so much pain you wanna lay down and never sit up again

be ready to learn. Don't be stubborn unless you absolutly 100% know somethings wrong

does this help any?

thanks it helps a lot just one more question i got the marimba part last week and band camp is next week our last practice before camp is tomorrow now I'm not particularly good at mallet instruments so i can get the parts with quarter notes and 8th notes (couldn't spell it out) but things like triplets and sixteenth notes are really complicated so this will be bad so what should i do about it Mr.Luchich ( I think that's how it's spelled) he might switch those parts with kyle the xylophone but what can i do if he doesn't won't that ******** up the show at competitions and football game performances? and about the physical limits i think i'll be ok 8 years of karate start to pay off after a while

Just work at it. find one of the upper classmen and get together after practice and have them help you. I promise we don't bite (but I sometimes wonder XD)

As for triplets and 16th notes don't hit them head on and at full speed. Start out slow and make sure you can play it slow then start slowly speeding it up until you reach show tempo. I know that I have to play 16th notes at 160 this year.

here's how I count them out

triplets:

one-la-li two-la-li (and so on) 1-la-li 2-la-li

16ths:

one-a-n-d two-a-n-d (and so on) 1-a-n-d 2-a-n-d

subdivide it makes it easier to count it out

well for subdividing our BD told us

For triplets:
trip-le-et basically divide up the syllables i find this kinda funny

For 16ths:

1-e-and-a or uh and so ond

not to say i don't like your method just saying how i was taught not to say i couldn't use your method it's just umm.. err. *brain explodes*

Just do what you are told. There is always an upper classman that insist on messing up in nearly every section and if a band director sees your dedication and willingness to work you'll earn your spot higher up!

yea just show commitment and dedication. it earns you a good rep with your band directors and your section leader(s). a lot of kids aren't committed to band and section leaders have enough on their hands putting up with them. if you show a willingness to work and get things done, you'll learn fast and be highly appreciated within your section and the band.

Just remember not to lock your knees, and like kilala0461 said, remember to bring sunblock or a hat or something, and remember water!!! One thing I learned throught band is to always keep your drill sheets with you. Just practice your music and have fun preforming! Its a lot of fun!!

Eat breakfast and don't drink milk!! Milk does not help you
Also, if you have to sit out, it's okay. Nobody should yell at you for sitting out because you don't feel well and it's not a sign of weakness.

Hope it helps! ^.^

Actualy milk is okay. Just not less than an hour before practice time. Milk has potassium which you will need to avoid cramping if you're not used to a lot of standing around or things like that. Look into eating potatoes and/or bananas too ^^ Other than that, everything else looks like it's been covered.
