I think the idea of self made magic tools are very appealing, especially since magic is so personal. Has anyone ever made their own deck/tool or do you prefer buying things?

Well... In high school, I went to an extra curricular sort of building known as Votec. Sort of a vocational technologies learning center. It had classes for all sorts of things; Department of Justice, Comp Tech, Automotive Tech which I was in for a bit. We had a metal grinder in there and I freaked out the prof when I made a rather well balanced set of shuriken and kunai.
I was henceforth banned from the grinder less on a special project or supervised. So worth it though.

A friend and I once made a knife out of a piece of wood using a disc sander in middle school shop class. But I've never really made any magical tools. I'm not a big tools guy, bought or made. I made some dowsing rods out of coat hangers once though. Seemed to work alright.

A tarot deck would be real hard and beyond me. However, I have an artisty friend who wanted to make one, although I'm not sure if she's still planning to.
I make most of my actual magical tools though. I buy cool things, like hanging brass incense burners, nothing against magic stores (Except the prices usually suck) but I make wands out of twigs, use a lot of paper/burning drawn or written things for sigils or charging intent, smelly oils and water to make your own incense mixes, and hell, I made an altar out of a piece of waste marble for a countertop, a stepping stone for a garden, bamboo mesh from a broken gazebo, and a nice root system between two trees. It's awesome.

I got a fair bit into making my own Tarot card deck that was based around the idea of Archetypes, because I have trouble remembering/feeling the traditional meaning for the Rider Waite deck, and I dislike the fact that the Archetype deck I bought actually tells you what the card means. So, out of frustration came a deck that, since I had made each and every card, I knew the meaning behind them. I still haven't finished it, though. D|
I'm all for making your own magickal tools, but I'm not particularly good at crafting things, so most of the artifacts I own have been bought from somewhere. I don't think it matters much, though.

I made a tarot deck out of two packs of playing cards about two years ago when that and a golf pencil were all I had access to. They worked pretty well, and I wish I still had them instead of giving them to someone I figured could use them more.
I also at the time made a pendulum from toothpaste, the cap from it, and a bit of string from my blanket. It also worked, although it took me a while to get the balance right.
You get kinda' bored when you're cut off from everything like that... D:

I've made one, but not on physical cards, though eventually that'll happen - I just don't have a printer right now. I did make all the images, but you know, I don't think it's all that big of a deal - I was just bored. smile

I keep meaning to design my own deck, but I'd like to get a better sense for reading the Tarot before undertaking that task. I make a lot of my stuff, though. Making paper is AMAZINGLY fun, and I made my wand, which was recently chewed up by the dog...
I also make dreamcatchers, pendulums, and various types of prayer beads. I carve some types of stones, and wood if necessary. I made an offering statue out of clay as well. I like crafts. heart

Due to my A) being a perfectionist and B) sucking at all things crafty, I really haven't made much of anything. I took a shop class a while ago, so I know my way around some machines, but I don't have access to any of them, and I don't really trust my rather klutzy self with the sharp objects most require.
I'd love to give it a shot sometime, but until then, I work with what I can find...

I have a deck of tarot cards, but don't feel I have enough understanding to undertake the challenge of creating my own. I would love to make my own for the pure connection it would give. One day I hope to design my own.

In tarot specifically, everything works better and the feelings are stronger and easier to read if the cards are made by hand. It's not as complicated as it seems-- there are 78 cards, divided by the major Arcana and the minor Arcana. From there you just have to study it ^^

Wouldn't it be so cool to have like a deck of cards made of silver, or some other sweet metal, with pictures painted or etched on? Probably be hard to make, a little delicate, and have probably some sharp edges, but still. Unsurpassed cool.
