It had started with a letter. A normal morning in the household, with Aletea half asleep in her coffee, and the children (and dragon) in varying stages of awareness. But when that miniature dragon had brought the mail in, it hadn't taken long for Aletea to wake up.

And promptly, she had disappeared to her room, and wasn't seen for the rest of the day.

The next day, the act was repeated again - a letter arriving from some unknown source, and Aletea's immediate disappearance.

So, really, it shouldn't have been a surprise when only a week after the first letter arrived, she did not come down to breakfast at all. And, upon checking her rooms...

Things were missing. Namely, her clothes and various personal effects.

There was one addition to the room, however - a letter, laying on the bed, and addressed to her family.

I'm sorry to leave like this, everyone - but something important has come up. I'm so sorry I can't explain any more then this, and that I can't take you all with me...all I can say is that I have to go do something. I don't know how long this will take.

So, I've made arrangements for you all while I'm gone...I can't expect Akiya to take care of you all by himself, after all...

From there, she went on to explain where everyone was going - she wouldn't burden any one person with them all, so they were being split up. Aurelia and Akiya were going to one friend, Ashkii to another, and Varian was being left in the care of another friend of hers, a man by the name of Dorian.

And, within the day, the people the children had been told they were to live with until Aletea's return showed up, and took them home. Except for Varian.

Finally, the boy decided to take matters into his own hands, and - upon locating the mans address - went there himself.

By the end of that visit, he learned that perhaps Aletea was a bit too trusting that her friends would take care of her children - or that she had been remiss in trusting at least this ones word: you see, he had decided he wasn't going to take Varian in, after all.

And, after shouting at the irritating man long enough, Dorian found him a place to stay; with a acquaintance of his, by the name of Li Hua Ming. Yet even then, he did not meet the woman - instead, a car was sent to pick him up.

It was a frustrated, tired and confused boy that set out in that car - but upon his first sight of the Ming house, Varian felt more in awe, then anything else.

'House' was hardly an appropriate word for it.

His first few days in the Ming House, Varian saw only servants: people who would get him anything he wished, yet refused to let him leave, or answer any questions. Primarily, when he would get to meet his...hostess.

In fact, the only response about Li Hua that he had received at all had simply been that she was a very busy woman, and he should be grateful she was willing to take him in at all. And finally, he met her.

The meeting didn't tell him much, in the end - but it did help him to finally settle into the Ming household. He was granted a weekly stipend (a decent amount, even by his own standards), and allowed to leave freely. Although he was rarely alone. He had soon realized that the driver who had picked him up from Dorians was never far behind.

Varian almost felt pleased by the changes: a decent amount of money every week, what was essentially freedom to go where he wanted...but there was a small bit of him, that he refused to acknowledge, that refused to go away all the same: he missed Aletea.
