☂The water dragon slayer had exceeded her limit towards pain striking her body, falling into a state of unconscious. The human body could only handle so much, everyone's body had a limit of how much they could take. Ironically, Kaya's could handle much more than she originally figured, more than most other mages. It was quite impressive..but she couldn't care less about the brat. Kimura's eyes sailed over towards Ciaran and Raine's interactions, these pathetic mages must have figured out by now that there ace was missing. And it was even more likely to assume they were assembling together, coming up with a plan to track them down in this very moment occurring. It would all be worthless for these mages in the end..Kimura already had everything planned out on how she was going to handle the situation, there was not a single flaw overlooked. This plan was already set into motion, and would be sought thoroughly into completion, the light mages lives were soon going to come crashing to a tragic end, there useless lives will be lost among the brutal chaos that was soon to erupt around town, bound to be causing many casualties.
Kimura's eyes flashed to Ciaran once he had acknowledged her, asking for her attention. She would turn to face the love of hers, watching as he carried the brand device in one hand. Perfect, this was the moment she would forever enjoy. She watched as he carried it over to Kaya's side, a twisted grin settling upon her lips, oh she just couldn't contain the excitement and thrill she was feeling, just watching him cradle that thing towards her very enemy! The very moment Ciaran had pressed it against her, the numbers arose and the shirt tore, the marking showing its true colors plastered against her skin. The water slayers own screams echoed farther down the long corridor hallways, Kimura laughing just the same, oh how pleasant a view that was, and so close to see the action! "Ahaha, good job Ciaran! She is ours for the taking now, she will never be allowed to forget that." She spoke in a twisted turn, facing towards Raine with a smirk holding against her lips. "I wonder..how the blood brat feels about this? You have lost one light mage so far. Next, will be Octavia, and all the others. How does it feel to lose them all so helplessly, while you sit here unable to lift a finger?" She toyed with the man, digging deep with her words. It was obvious the man cared for this Octavia girl..considering the conversation he and Ciaran were currently having. Though, she was unaware of how he felt towards Kaya, but it didn't matter anyways. Weather he cared or not, he was just going to have to get used to it. ████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████

Raine's jaw clenched in anger. Ciaran was trying to get at him and for all his trying, it was working. It infuriated him that he wasn't able to wrap his hands around the dark wizard's neck and choke the life out of him."Yes. I do think you weak. Picking on little girls. Torturing them in an attempt to force them to madness in order to cope,"he snarled,"I'll never see things from your perspective, not in a million years. Not... ugh... not... unless I ripped your eyes out and had a peek through those corneas."The idea of destroying the dark ecriture mage had once again begun to allow Blood Raine to bubble to the surface. A menacing smirk crossing his features,"Do you really ever think you'll impress me? I think not,"he said with a chuckle.
The blood mage's counterpart scoffed"What I was meant to be? You mean the thing they tried and failed to turn me into again and again? Raine doesn't remember all of it. I protected that fragile mind. I was sold on more than once and each time returned to the lab for turning on the buyers. I left quite a bit of destruction in my wake even at that age. Perhaps if they'd not been so careless in allowing me to escape, by now he'd be under their complete control. But you're a fool if you think for a second you'd manage it so far down the line. That pretty face of yours wouldn't have even made the cut as an opponent for me back then let alone a mastermind scientist,"he said, the poison of mockery in his voice.
Tilting his head to the side, letting his slightly singed, sweat-drenched and dirt-covered hair flop over his face, his eye twitching slightly as he leaned against the still-fresh star-shaped burn on his neck,"Aww, you really think that? You really believe there's no one left? As far as I'm aware, Ymir and Andrea are still around. Either of those two could kick your guilds a**. Even I wouldn't want to go against Hysteria. There's plenty of others. And you forget those pesky little spirits of Octavia's. Had she not panicked so much when I had my hands around her neck... God... so close... I almost had her... those spirits would have been on me like a rash if she could call them in that state. Are you sure you've thought all of this through? I don't think you have, potato boy."his tone was almost a singsong in comparison to his regular voice, his still-tired golden eyes trained on Ciaran. Blood Raine's gaze flicked to Kaya upon the water dragon slayer's mention,"Her? Oh yes, he's personified her. I personally don't mind. The more he sees, the more upset he gets, the more I can take control. And when we get out of these chains... well... he'll be just that much more inclined to let loose and I'll have full reign, excuse the pun,"he beamed, enamoured with the idea of having all that control. He could go on a spree and kill whoever he wanted, however he wanted, and there was so much choice, so many people in this building who would get what's coming to them. Every piece of s**t in the lab would suffer.
Watching Ciaran saunter out of the cell, Blood Raine glared at him as he made his way over to Kaya, once again producing the electric brander. Though uncaring, the moment the slayer's shriek reached the blood mage's ears, the switch was flipped. A tightness gripped his chest"No! Stop!"Raine bellowed, his voice back to being his own,"Stop it!"He lurched forward with all his might. And for a millisecond, as the binding on his right arm snapped under the pressure, dissipating the runes, he had hope. That was until that arm made a horrendous sound and flopped uselessly by his side as he cried out in pain. No. This wasn't happening. Had he dislocated it? Broken it? Whatever he'd done, he couldn't move it."No...,"he uttered defeatedly. He was a fool to think he could get out.

She knew nothing but the darkness. A vast blackness devoid of any sensation. Nothing, not a single sight nor sound nor smell reached her consciousness. She was floating. Blissfully unaware of the pain previously imparted to her by the dark mages. But then, slowly, the Slayer began to stir. Her senses came back to her one by one as she crept back from the abyss. Kaya’s first inkling that she drew closer to awakening was the fevered state of her body. It felt warmer than usual, as if she’d been standing too close to a fire. Next came the throbbing, aching pains spread over every inch of her. The most intense of which were located in her arms and legs… The skewers! …her neck… Ouch …and midsection. If anything, Kaya believed she felt worse than before. Did something happen while she was out of it? Probably. While she struggled to gather herself, snippets of conversation drifted through her muddled mind. The voices belonged to Ciaran and Kimura, a giddiness inherent in them. The raven-haired teenager had no time to piece things together. Before she was fully aware, a ripping sound reached her ears followed closely by an intense burning on her side. Her eyes flew open. A shriek so raw and biting tore from her throat. For how long the agony continued, she couldn’t say, but it was for far too long.
Finally, mercifully, the source of the searing fire fell away from her skin. Kaya spluttered for breath, struggling to draw in enough air. Tears streamed down her cheeks. Her eyes widened in shock as she tried to process and cope with what had just been done. “Wh-what…did you do?” She stared horrified at the electric brand in Ciaran’s hand, body trembling in clear signs of distress. Only the audible snap from Raine’s cell managed to sway her focus from the evil device. Her frenzied gaze flicked to him instinctively, latching onto the singular hope and detriment of the blood mage where it dangled by his side. Raine…
The white-haired mage’s lips curled in a Cheshire grin, “Oh-ho, so I see you’ve come out to play some more have you, Blood Raine?” Between the two personalities, Ciaran found himself rather intrigued by the darker persona. His blood lust was something to behold, no matter whom it was directed at. “No,” Ciaran agreed with a noncommittal nod, “I don’t believe I ever could. You’re right on that matter. But it’s not about impressing you. What I’m after is your acceptance, for lack of a better term. You see, Blood Raine, of the two of you, you’re the only one capable of understanding the true depths of darkness for you were born from it. Raine might be the one in control, but you’re the one with the power and artistic drive. If anything, you know I will win this challenge of mine and can appreciate the creative flare I have in mind. That is all I seek from you. Nothing more or less.” Well, that was not entirely accurate. He did indeed desire to procure Blood Raine and his abilities for their own purposes. To witness him in full control and at their command would be a dream well yearned for. Yet Ciaran was not so foolish to think the blood mage would be controlled so easily.
As if to prove his point, Blood Raine revealed a little of their time amidst the Russian scientists. He mentioned the multitude of times he was sold and returned to their care, reveling in the memory of the destruction left in his wake. “Ah,” he bobbed his head. “A truly unfortunate state of affairs for the scientists. I’m certain they thought themselves failures for being unable to see you succeed outside of their watchful gazes. They probably questioned their calculations and methods countless times over. Wondering where they had misstepped to keep you from your full potential.” His pale orbs took on a wistful light. “If we could but turn back time and tell them these things. Your escape would have only fueled their self-doubts and concerns I imagine. Their funding likely suffered. However,” Ciaran smiled knowingly. “None of that is of consequence. You are here now, and we have something those scientists didn’t at the time. We have their literature. Every experiment performed on Raine, every instance of success and failure- all recorded, all painstakingly gathered by Doctor Shaw and her team. We, my good stook, are building upon the backs of giants.” Unlike the Russians, they would not fail in their endeavors. The groundwork had already been laid. All they need do is pick up where they were forced to leave off.
Ciaran met the golden eyes of his foe. Amusement lit his features. They were playing a game of cat and mouse it seemed. How thrilling! “Oh but I have,” he waggled a finger. “Picture this, if you will. The remainder of your stronger mages- just a few S-ranks as it were- gather the weaker ones together. Their discussion one of how to protect those of lesser strength while also creating a plan to locate their missing members. During the course of the conversation, debate is had. Arguments are made for everyone staying together and some are made for other measures. Yet, when all is said and done, it is a compromise that is reached. The weaker members shall be paired with stronger members. A plan enacted to split forces for the allowance of covering more ground. Everyone will remain in touch throughout the entire process. Am I correct thus far?” He questioned the redhead with a sneer upon his face. “Except there is one fatal flaw. There are only three S-ranks in Sabertooth and one in Fairy Tail remaining and far too many members to keep an eye on. Members start going off on their own, forgetting to pay heed to the warnings and established course of action. Perhaps it is then that something untoward happens. Something nobody could’ve foreseen because it didn’t match the perceived motive. And that is only one of fifty viable scenarios to obtain our objectives.” The Dark Écriture mage made certain to account for every possibility.
How quaint, he scoffed at the notion of the tiger escaping his chains and cage. “I’m afraid that will be a day you will await an eternity for.” With a wink, Ciaran parted ways with him so he could proceed with his next course of action. The branding of the fairy could not have brought more pleasure to him. Her cries of agony and Raine’s screams to stop were pure bliss. Kimura’s praises even more so to him. Yet the unexpected breach of restraints coupled with an audible snap tempered his enjoyment ever so slightly. My magic has dwindled more than I realized, his brow twitched. Masking his mild displeasure, the dark mage smiled over at his guild master. “It appears as if he’s grown a fondness for the fairy. Even going so far as to break his arm attempting to get free. It’s a shame,” he clucked his tongue, “That he believed we’d be foolish not to place extra precautions on his bindings.” Switching the brand off, Ciaran sighed and set it aside before shifting his gaze to Kaya. “As to what I did,” pale-yellow orbs drifted down to his handywork, relishing in it. “Isn’t it obvious? You’ve been branded with our mark. You’re no longer a fairy but the property of Dragon’s Bane.” He paused to let his words sink in. Stepping closer, Ciaran reached up to touch the iron skewer protruding from her right forearm. A look of utter devilish rapture flashed across his eyes. “Welcome home, Kaya.” As he spoke, he pulled the skewer from her arm. Her healing flesh tore open once again, blood flowing freely from the wound. So it would go that he removed the remaining five as well. The stifled yelps and gasps bringing him great amusement, as he hoped it would to Kimura as well.
Unfortunately, their current session would need to be brought to an end. Both Raine and Kaya were at the very limits of what their bodies could withstand. Their injuries would require tending to soon if they wished to ward off infection. Having the two die so easily and so soon simply would not do. Perhaps he might use the time to explore possible experiments alongside Shaw, or maybe do some carving. “Acushla, if you agree to it, I think it’s time we depart for now. As much as I’m enjoying myself, and as happy as I am to see you do likewise, it would not benefit us to continue. It would behoove us to rest for a time and return when we’re refreshed. The medical team can see to them in the meanwhile and see that they are prepared for our next session. Assuming, of course, that we can coerce them down here.” Ciaran had not forgotten the mishap with the previous medical team. They would have to make certain to thoroughly secure the Sabertooth mage and up his dosage of sedatives to prevent a similar disaster. For now, however, the tiger and the fairy could have their moments alone to soothe one another’s pain if they so chose. “Until later,” he grinned at the two light mages before inclining his head to Kimura in farewell. “I will be in the labs when you need me, Master Kimura.” Pivoting on his heels, he whisked himself out of the cells and up the stairwell, trekking the familiar path back to the laboratory where Shaw spent most of her time.

☂Talk text Kimura smirked devilishly towards the two light mages, one tiger and one fairy. One could say it was quite a terrifying smirk on her opposing end, but anyone joining forces with her was just as scary. These light mages had no idea what kind of trouble they were soon to find themselves in, oh to see the look of terror on there faces would surely be satisfying and worthy of waiting in her eyes. Oh, she just couldn't contain the excitement escaping her features. However, she was certainly enjoying toying with Kaya, watching Ciaran cause her complete agony over the skewer. It seemed Raine wasn't enjoying it as much as he should, that was just too bad on his end. There torment would not end, not until they all got what they wanted. Her mind snapped back to reality as Ciaran spoke to her, explaining there targets were reaching there breaking point, and would not be able to continue much further. There weak bodies were already extremely drained, she could figure just by staring at there conditions. "Sounds fine my dear. I am glad you are enjoying it as much as I am, there is more fun to be had once they take time to recover some. Just see to it those fools don't make the same mistake, we don't need to lose anymore of our medical staff." Kimura was still annoyed at whomever sent the man down with his injury, such a foolish decision to take on Raine like that. Whomever sent him should either be killed for that, or fired. Only an idiot would make that obvious mistake, an idiot who isn't needed in Dragons Bane. "That's fine, enjoy yourself, hm? I will contact you when we are ready to head back down. For now, I will be..attending to unresolved things as well. If you need to contact me, do so as well." The fire dragon slayer stated, exiting up the stairs behind Ciaran, taking a different turn, towards the Guilds Entrance and disappearing out of sight for the moment. Blood Raine silently listened to the stream of carefully thought-out planning that seethed through the dark ecriture mage's mouth, soaking his sentences in confidence, blown up by his ego. He truly was infuriating. The upper hand Ciaran had over him, the information he had obtained that not even Raine himself was fully aware of. So much had been shut out, so much had been noted that perhaps he hadn't ever seen as important but would have been pivotal for the scientists and their research. He'd never admit it out loud but he wanted to see those files. He wanted to gaze upon them and create a whole new barrier around the information before destroying every single shred of it, never to be seen by anyone else. However, he could bet his life that Shaw had back-ups of her back-ups. Somewhere between Ciaran's bragging of superior knowledge of the workings of the guild members minds and his fifty scenarios he seemed to have come up with, the real Raine pushed through, shoving Blood Raine back down to the depths of his mind. His body shook from the pain he was feeling - the severe burns on his body, the brand on his neck which filled his nose with the scent of seared flesh, his broken arm that hung uselessly by his side, the soreness of his throat from the retching and the stomach cramps from the poison residue left in his system. Not even the sedative running through his bloodstream could cancel out the mass mixture of negative sensations.
Not even the sound of the two dragons making their way down the corridor and up the stairs brought relief to the tiger. For a long while he was silent, nothing but quiet shaky breaths leaving his mouth as sweat and tears rolled down his face. After what felt like an hour, but was probably only ten minutes, he managed to find the energy to lift his heavy head and look towards Kaya. Her tear-streaked face was painful to look at."Kaya,"he uttered, his voice a croaky whisper,"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I..."more tears fell down his face,"I don't know how I ended up this way; weak and pathetic," his words cut through the quiet cells with anger. More at himself than anyone else."For what I am I deserve this. For everything I've done, none of what these bastards give me will be enough to make me pay. But you...,"he stared into her eyes with apology scrawled across his face,"You don't belong here."Going quiet again for a moment, Raine stared at his broken arm and shifted his shoulder, growling in agony as pain shot up his body. At least his fingers twitched, he hadn't severed any nerves."Promise me,"he said, allowing his head to drop again,"Promise me you won't let them turn you away from the light. Not for a second,"he continued, his tone sounding like more of an order than a request,"However... if you do... I'll pull you back. I know darkness. Darkness and I are both friends and enemies and I'll make it my enemy to get you out."Raines eyes flicked up as he heard footsteps entering the stairway to the cells. No doubt it would be the medics and he was sure there would have been extra precautions not to allow anyone with so much as a pinprick on their fingertips.

Pain radiated across her entire body. From her arms, right down to her feet, the whole of her felt foreign and in anguish. She trembled where she stood. Not from fear or horror, but from distress and rage. What had been done to her and Raine- what had been done to all the people held captive- should never happen. People weren’t toys or objects to be played with. To be twisted, morphed, or marred to someone else’s specifications and likings. Her heart was in turmoil over knowing that’s exactly what Ciaran, Shaw, and Kimura had planned for them and the others. It sickened her to recognize how powerless she was against them. Chained and beaten as she was. The memories of her previous captivity vibrant in her mind. Her father fought so hard to keep her from this nightmare, to escape and get her to safety. Yet, here she stood, in a new incarnation of the torment she faced as a child. Had all his efforts been nothing but a waste? His death meaningless? Kaya closed her eyes as two tears coursed freely down her cheeks. Her face dampened and taught from the wetness. Do you know what hope is, little one? A booming voice resonated within her head. A memory long since forgotten resurfacing. Hope? Is it what you and Papa found the other day? The raucous yet gentle laughter of her dragon parents followed. No, little one, hope. It is a feeling. Something you have deep inside. Something in your heart. In my heart?Yes, so long as you have hope in your heart, you have the power to change things….you have light.Never let your light die, little one. Even if it fades, never let it go out. Watatsumi reached toward her, touching the tip of his massive claw to her heart. For even the faintest of lights can brighten the darkest of places. Kaya looked down at her heart before lifting her eyes to the trio surrounding her. Yue, Watatsumi, and her father all held gentle and encouraging smiles. The young girl knew it had to be a memory; however, she swore she could feel the pressure to her chest even now.
Hearing Raine call her name, Kaya opened her eyes, lifting her head to look back at him. His form was blurry from the unshed tears swimming in her eyes. She blinked to try to clear them away so she could better meet his gaze. Raine sounded hoarse and fatigued. His quiet words laced with sadness and anger. Anger at himself for his perceived weakness. Sorrow for her predicament. She listened to him for a time, letting him speak his piece. “You didn’t do this to me,” she said after taking a moment to gather her thoughts. “You’re not responsible for this, so don’t apologize for it.” Her voice waivered with emotion. Pausing, she cleared her throat and continued, “You’re right though. I don’t belong here. But neither do you. I told you before. It’s not you who’s to blame for anything you’ve done. He is. You’re not a monster or a weapon to be locked up until someone needs you. And you sure as hell don’t deserve any of what that jerk has in mind. You’re a human being. Same as me. Same as all of us here.” Kaya said the last in a matter-of-fact tone, leaving no room for debate on how she felt. Sure, he might have issues, but there was a distinct line between him and their captors. “I promise,” she stared long and hard at the top of his drooped head. Resolution and defiance married in her declaration. “They won’t get what they want from me. I’m not gonna turn away from my family and friends. I’ve still got hope….I’ve still got light. ‘Tsumi and Yue always told me that the faintest of light can brighten the darkness. Nobody’s gonna strip the light from me. No mater how hard they try. And the same goes for you. You can bet on it.” Although unspoken, the promise was there. Should Raine slip into despair, Kaya would pull him from it. Should he give up hope, she would rekindle it. Just as he would for her. The dark mages weren’t going to win. They could break their bodies, but Kaya refused to let them break their spirits.
Footsteps echoed down the hallway, drawing both Raine’s and her stare. Medics. Had to be by the sounds of equipment and smells emanating from their direction. Sure enough, a rather descent sized group of people rounded the corner. Some of whom wore medical-type garb and carried various medical equipment while others wore guard-like uniforms. They split into smaller groups upon reaching the cells with half entering Raine’s cell and the other half into Kaya’s. Those who bore the medical gear set to work tending to the wounds inflicted onto the light mages. Kaya’s bleeding wounds were inspected for possible stitching and infection before being patched and bandaged. Her burns treated with a soothing agent then wrapped lightly with gauze. The shock collar removed and set aside to aid in the process. Meanwhile, the medical team working on Raine had their work cut out for them. They tended to the easy injuries first, albeit reluctantly, utilizing the same soothing agent on his burns and wrapping them in gauze. Once done with that, the team checked his IV line and discussed the best way to handle his broken arm. Their scans illustrated a compound fracture of his humerus. A consensus was soon reached to set the bone then immobilize it with a thick plaster cast. The cast itself would be set against his chest to prevent him from unduly moving his arm while also leaving space at the wrist for any restraint. The medics were careful and measured in their movements around Raine. None of them wanted a repeat of what happened to their coworker earlier that day. Thirty minutes passed before their work was complete. A shot of antibiotics for each of the light mages marked the final step. Then in stepped the team of guards. Where the medics saw to their wounds, these people saw to their captivity. Kaya imagined they would check their restraints for defects before leaving the cells. To her surprise, they had something else in mind.
As the medics tended to the prisoners, the guards had been busy securing the cells and making necessary adjustments. Beds unnoticed in the back portion of the rooms were made ready for the soon to be inhabitants while the shackles mounted to the walls and floor were tested for strength and durability. Any implements of torture were placed elsewhere in the room, kept nearby should the Dragon’s Bane members need them but out of the way till then. Now that the medical portion had finished, it was time to see to their own set of orders. First came the Blood mage. The lead guard gave the signal to one of the medics. She nodded in kind, moving forward to inject a paralyzing agent into his IV. Its effects would be almost instant. He would be unable to move even a finger. Despite this certainty, the guards waited a moment longer to be sure it was in effect before unshackling Raine from the wall. Two guards held his upper body while two more grasped his legs, shuffling him over to the waiting bed where they promptly laid him on his back and rechained his extremities. Similar precautions were being taken across the hallway in the Slayer’s cell. Seeing the needle, Kaya had struggled at first, to no avail. An intense cooling sensation coursed outward from the injection sight through her veins to numb her body. She could barely hold her head up let alone attempt to fight. All she could feel was heaviness of her arms as they fell to her side, released from the chains, followed closely by the pressure of hands holding her. Their grip kept her upright and stationary as they set about stripping her tattered clothing from her. Her hoodie swiftly replaced with a white sleeveless shirt and her pants with black shorts. Kaya growled her disapproval and disgust since she was incapable of doing much else. The head guard in her group sneered back, clearly amused by it. They wasted little time in shifting her over to the empty bed. Her wrists and ankles once more restrained by metallic shackles. As they moved away, another of the medical team stepped forward. This one had a longer needle attached to an IV line. She poked around the back of the teenager’s hand, probing for a good vein to use which she found near the center. In a single fluid motion, the medic had the sight cleaned, needle prepped and implanted into the chosen spot. A dual port hung limply while she situated the IV stand and its bag of fluids. She took great care to check the tubes and switches before deftly joining the line to its appropriate port. The second of which would be used for injections or other fluids should they be needed in the future.
The team of medics and guards did one final round of checks. Satisfied with the results, and secure in their methods, they decided it best to depart and report to their superiors. Guards and medics alike knew Shaw and Ciaran would be pleased with their handiwork here. The prisoners were well-tended to and well-secured. There would be no escape for them. By the time the paralysis serum wore off, they would be well out of reach of any attempts at retaliation. They also breathed a sigh of relief that none of them had run afoul of the Blood mage’s particular brand of magic. Nor would they since all had been cautious during their work down here. Gathering up the waste and their equipment, the two groups left the light mages to their new circumstances, rejoining one another in the hallway. Two “schnicks” registered the locking of the cells by the guards and signaled it time to go. Which they gladly did. Kaya watched their retreating forms until she couldn’t see them from her imposed vantage point. The second she was confident they were gone, she tried to gain control of her body again. Try as she might, no matter how much she willed herself to move, none of her muscles obeyed her command. Even her throat muscles refused to cooperate, preventing her from speaking to Raine and checking on him. It’d be another fifteen minutes before she was able to do anything.

Raine shut his eyes, willing the tears to stop. He didn't want these medics seeing how broken he was. The last thing he needed was rumours flying around the wretched laboratory of how successful Ciaran was in breaking him. It wasn't the dark ecriture mage that had pushed the blood mage over the edge. If anyone it was that woman, Shaw, and her drugs. Bravo to her for scarring him more than he thought possible. She'd be dying torturously when he got out. If he got out. Though he couldn't stand to admit it, it was starting to seem more and more unlikely. Kaya's response to his begging didn't really register to his brain while the medics jabbed him and covered him in bandages before securing his arm with a cast, strapping it to his chest to restrict movement more than before and allow the plaster to dry without issue. He'd never broken a bone before like that. He'd been trapped and had them snapped to test healing times and pain thresholds but he'd never done it to himself through desperation. It wasn't a nice feeling. Failure was a downright awful feeling and it stung him like a thousand hornets. The paralysis serum given to move him from the standing chains to the previously ignored bed didn't do much in the way of prevention. He'd already lost so much energy he could hardly move anyway but he understood the caution. No one on this medical team wanted to risk losing a hand. The memory of exploding that poor medics hand brought him a sliver of happiness. He'd ruined someone's life without even killing them; hideous deformation, career ruined, unimaginable pain. That b*****d had it coming for being so stupid. He felt himself be picked up by the guards who had been standing by doing nothing until now. His muscle weight caused them more strain than they had expected and he internally scoffed at their weakness. New cold chains snap around his wrists and ankles. It was nice that they weren't stretching his limbs to their limits but they were still taut enough to prevent him even sitting up - if he could. He stared at the ceiling for a while before letting his head fall to the side. He could hardly see Kaya in the darkness of her cell, just the outline of her body laying on the bed."It's funny. With the amount you eat, I thought it would have taken more people to move you to the bed. Took four to get my fat a** here,"he said. His voice bore no humour but he was trying,"Weird how they enjoyed hurting us so badly but we're given the highest care possible to take away that pain. Like an abuser that keeps their partner coming back by telling them they care for them and then beating them all over again."His gaze fell to the floor, thinking back to what the slayer had actually said to him earlier,"Did you mean it? Do you really not consider me to be at fault with Blood Raine? As you say, if I put my mind to it I could overrule him. Should I not have done that years ago instead of just accepting him and quite happily pandering to his desires by continuing to kill? That makes me deserving of punishment,"he sighed and shifted uncomfortably. We wasn't sure he didn't belong here but he did know one thing...,"I won't be turned back into the weapon I was apparently destined to be,"he growled,"I don't intend on giving in easily. I'll fight him until my mind stops functioning. I can stop my own heart if I so wish. An ability thanks to my magic. He can't turn me back if I'm dead and he can revive me as many times as he likes but I'll stop it again and again.,"he said, determinedly, sounding maybe a little too happy with the prospect of death."I'm so tired but I don't want to sleep,"he mumbled,"I don't want to dream of what I saw in that hallucination."He shuddered, feeling sick again. He just wanted it to stop. He wanted to close his eyes and not think of Octavia but of ripping Ciaran limb-from-limb. Crushing Shaw's skull with his bare hands and impaling the guild master of Dragon's Bane on a blood spike.

Kaya lay there in silence. Her body finally started to come back under her own control, starting with first her fingers and progressively spreading until she could move of her own free will again. Not that she truly wanted to right now. Every inch of her throbbed and ached with pain. The medics hadn’t given her any sort of painkiller to take the edge off. Apparently, they merely wanted to prevent complications but were content to let the suffering continue. Bastards. A spasm shot through her left leg, causing her leg to jerk against her restraints and pull at her wound. She winced. Tch… Minutes passed with little else being done by either prisoner. It seemed as if both became lost in their own thoughts for a time. Until, that is, Raine broke the silence. His attempt at a joke sounded flat and unpracticed. Despite that, Kaya couldn’t help but crack a small smile. “You just gotta have the right metabolism,” she cracked back. Her head lolled to the side, giving her a better view of him in the darkness. “It’s what they do. You heard ‘em say it too. They don’t want us dead. They want us broken. Can’t be broken if we’re dead, so they have to give us breaks.” A memory flashed across her mind. It had been the same back then. Kimura’s father always timed the experiments to where she and her dad were able to recuperate before starting again. A vicious, never-ending cycle of pain and torment. Of course, Raine probably knew all about that. He’d been experimented on as well. He dealt with it a lot longer than I did too, Kaya recognized she was preaching to the choir, so to speak. Sighing, she closed her eyes briefly, turning her head to face the ceiling before opening them again. “You’re an idiot if you think you belong here or deserve any of this...Yeah, I meant it and I’ll stick by it too. I’m not good at explaining it but…I think it’s because you give away control when you do that you’re able to keep the control you’ve got. I’m not in your head though. I don’t know everything that goes on in there. But, maybe…giving him that little bit of time out keeps you from constantly having a tug-of-war…right?” The raven-haired teenager didn’t know how else to explain it. Her frame of reference lay in split personality disorder, and even that didn’t seem to fit entirely well. Yet she was doing her best to understand him. To show him that not everyone thought him a monster.
Hearing his resolve to never become a weapon set her at ease somewhat. Although, she preferred he not try to take the more drastic route out of the situation, if possible. She wouldn’t fault him for it if it came down to it in the end though. “Don’t sound so happy about it,” Kaya quipped lightly. “Besides, wouldn’t that give him more ammo against you? What do you wanna bet he’d call that the coward’s way out?” Ciaran would do whatever he could to destroy their wills and minds. There were no doubts in her mind that he would see Raine’s attempts as a sign of weakness and pounce. The Blood mage’s soft words drew her gaze back to him. He didn’t need to say he was tired. She heard it in his tone. Sleep? Sleep sounded good. They would need plenty of it if they wanted to be prepared for their next session. “You should try to sleep anyway. It’ll suck but—,” she muttered around a yawn, “—You don’t wanna hallucinate from lack of sleep. It’s worse than dreaming.” At least one could wake up from a dream. Hallucinations were there to stay until they’d played themselves out.

Raine thought over Kaya's words for a while before speaking again."When my severe experiments started, I was already broken. How I turned out was a result of something unintentional that those scientists never planned,"he said, a painful memory from his otherwise blank existence in the lab all those years ago flashed in his mind,"Cornelius..."he uttered under his breath before shutting his eyes tightly and pushing the memory back down to the depths from which it came."This time it's a different kind of torture for me. There's things they're threatening to do to people I care about. Before, I never cared, not even for myself. And this must be what you've been through before. I don't envy you,"he said. His gaze dropped to the floor and he whined as he flexed his fingers in the cast his arm had been put in,"Sorry, I shouldn't talk about your past like that. I doubt it's something you want to think about." The blood mage's mouth twitched with what might have been an amused smile were he not so exhausted,"You're smarter than that brat gives you credit for. You're right. I give him control every so often to keep him quiet. If he knows he'll have his moment, he doesn't fight against me quite so much,"he confirmed. Raine cringed, realising his words came off in a bad light,"Sorry, I don't mean to,"he replied,"I wouldn't be happy dying and that's a last resort."he said in a promise to the slayer. He wondered how long they would have to recover. How long before the torture started all over again? He hoped for at least a few hours of sleep but every time we went to shut his eyes, something caught his breath and sent a wave of panic down his body. A minor panic attack. Great. Just what he needed. He couldn't fill his lungs properly so shifted again, wincing at the pain of the burns and broken bone. No good. He'd have to suffer the subtle fear coursing through him.

Cornelius? How Raine uttered the name gave Kaya pause. Who was he? He had to have been of some importance to the Blood mage. Someone he knew from his time in the labs. Maybe a friend. Whoever he was, the memory of him seemed to be a painful one. So painful that he chose to push back against it. Which, based on what the redhead mentioned prior, led the Water Dragon Slayer to believe the two statements were intertwined. She wouldn’t press him for answers. His tone was enough to tell her that thought was best left alone. “It’s fine,” she sighed when the subject of her previous captivity came up. “The past is the past. I can’t stay in it.” Shifting on the bed, she attempted to get comfortable. Kaya winced, sucking in a sharp breath. The entirety of her body protested the movement. Her scorched, tender side chief among the complainants. “It’s a little different than before,” she stared up at the ceiling pensively. Memories played across her mind. “Back then, when I was three, they couldn’t do too much to me or the experiments wouldn’t work. They focused on my dad and the others for the more difficult things.” Doctor Tenma’s face loomed from the darkness. It hovered before her eyes, ghostly and surreal, clearly not there save for in memory. “He liked to use me against them. I was usually the punishment if they didn’t submit. Not that that stopped him from experimenting on me altogether. Otou-san tried to protect me whenever he’d come to get me those times. But he couldn’t win…then we got lucky…” The teenager released a quiet sigh. “This time…there’s nothing holding them back. I’m not afraid though. They couldn’t scare me then and they won’t now.” She spoke the last with a hardened tone full of resolve. Let them try to break her will. Let them try to tame her like some pet. They wouldn’t ever succeed.
Kaya blushed then. She realized she’d gone on a bit of a tangent. “Sorry. I guess I’m still figuring out my memories.” Her blush deepened when Raine confirmed her suspicions. “He’s not the first one,” the teenager chuckled. “Not many people think I’m smart because I’m impulsive. And, yeah, there’re some things that go way over my head but I learn pretty fast, especially in a fight.” Her mouth twitched as her smile dimmed. “Not sure how I feel about being right on this one. I should probably be since the alternative isn’t that good, huh? As for the dying thing,” Kaya rolled her head to gaze into his cell. “I’m holding you to that.” Silence fell between them after that. Each tried to achieve some semblance of rest. She tossed and turned as her battered form allowed while Raine sounded as if he kept having trouble breathing. Was he—was he suffering from panic attacks? Uncertain yet wanting to help, Kaya did the only thing she was able to…she sang. An old lullaby her mother used to sing to her. It was hazy and hard to recall at first. The words had been lost to her for so long. Little by little, however, she became more confident in them, letting the soft melody filter across the void.
✸ OOC ✸ Note that the lullaby would be in Japanese, but these are the words to it.

Raine gave a small smile in reaction to Kaya's words. It was amazing how hardened to things she still was even after her past had been violently pulled back to the forefront of her mind. She was unwavering in her morals and her determination was admirable. If only he had her strength right now."Your father must have loved you very much to go through what he did in order to protect you,"he said. He daren't think how awful it must have been for a man to be in constant fear for his daughter's life. But Raine had never even considered the idea of having offspring, mostly because he didn't care for a relationship strong enough to procreate but also partially for that reason. Why would be want to help bring a child into this world when stuff like this happened to even the best of people? He hummed a laugh,"Well, we can be misunderstood together then. You can be impulsive and secretly smart and I can be an a*****e with a superiority complex and secretly just as crazy as everyone thinks I am. Oh... wait... that's not a secret,"he said, unsure of whether he was being funny or just suffering from the amount of drugs in his system coupled with the pain. He shrugged, instantly regretting the motion due to his arm and mentally noting not to do it again."Go for it. Hold me to it as tightly as you like. I won't break my promise,"he said softly,"You know why I can't break it without there being the correct conditions? It's because I can't lie. Ever. I was so beaten, and hurt, and tortured, every time I told even the slightest of fibs that by the tender age of five, I was terrified of the consequences were I to even tell someone it was two minutes past the hour when my watch said it was three minutes past. Now I just can't do it. The words of a lie grip to my throat as if I'm choking so I never even try now. I just tell the truth. I make promises I intend to keep."He thought about his punishments from the lab. Compared to this, they didn't seem so scary, but to a child under five it was positively horrific. He still bore the scars from the times he'd lied. As he lay in the silence, trying to steady himself, a gentle and melodic voice floated through the air. Kaya was singing. Whether it was for herself or for him, it was surprisingly soothing. He closed his eyes and counted his inhales and exhales, finding it much easier to concentrate with the sound of the quietly whirring vents being drowned in the dragon slayers voice. All the unsettling noises were coated in song and it was like a breath of fresh air to his lung as they finally filled. By the time her lullaby was finished, he could breathe again."You have a nice voice"he said, feeling sorry for breaking the peacefulness with his harsh, deep voice after such a calming song had resounded through the cells.

Kaya peered deep into Raine’s cell, keeping her eyes glued to him. Her father. A man of unwavering strength and determination. A man willing to surrender every part of himself to protect those he cared for and wanted to protect. “Yeah,” she said softly. “He did. Even when he was outnumbered in our village, he tried to keep them from taking me away. That’s the only reason why he got caught. Then, when they were doing the experiments, he tried to keep the others safe too.” She remembered how the other prisoners looked up to her father. His charisma and will power earned their trust and respect. He became their leader and would do anything possible to keep them from harm. Yet, one by one, they slowly dwindled. Unable to withstand the more destructive experiments. "But the conditions were worse back then. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t stop Tenma from doing the tests. A lot of people didn’t make it. There were only five of us left the night we escaped.” Kaya couldn’t recall if the others managed to get away. They had broken off from each other to make recapture less possible. She and her father seemed to be Tenma’s targets. Even now, the teenager could hear the ghost of his taunting yells ringing in her ears. Saying the sooner they gave up, the less severe the consequences would be. His phantom keening became drowned out by Raine’s laughter. “I don’t know. I think the first part is pretty well known, but you might be able to get away with the crazy part being a secret still,” she joked back, keeping her tone flippant.
She adjusted her weight yet again. The chains pulled taught against her ankle as she tried to relieve a cramp in her leg. The puncture wounds through her calves protested. “Promises are meant to be kept,” she nodded. “But being tortured because you fibbed is disgusting. Those scientists were monsters to do that to you.” Of course, they were monsters for experimenting on children (and people in general) in the first place. If she didn’t know any better, she might have assumed that they and Doctor Tenma were working together. But that couldn’t have been the case. The way the dark mages had spoken about him made it sound as if he had long since died. “I get why you made me promise about not lying earlier. You don’t have to worry about that. I keep my promises too.” No matter the cost, she stuck to her word. Silence settled over them afterwards. Raine’s panic-stricken breaths clawing at the stillness. Kaya responded with song. Her mother’s lullaby overpowering the disquieting sounds of the cells themselves. It brought peace to her as it did to the Blood mage. The meaning of the Japanese words translated to a blessing over the person sung to. By the time her song ended, visions of her mother, brother, and father were the only things wafting through her memories. Happier times before the destruction of her home. “Thanks,” the teenager grinned. Happy to hear his breathing rate leveled and normal. “Haha was teaching me. Lullabies were her favorite to sing.” While they were her favorite to listen to. Her mother’s voice, soothing and melodic, could quell even the greatest of fears or terrors.
✸ OOC ✸ "Haha" in this case is Japanese for "My mother"

Raine listened to Kaya's story. Her father sounded like that kind of man that Raine shod be to the Sabertooth guild. The kind of man he might have been if not for those scientists in Russia."I never looked back to see who made it out of the lab I was in. It burned down for the most part. A lot of the kids were still locked in their cells when I went through. I didn't stop to help them. I didn't know what the codes were and I didn't care. I was too far gone at that point. I was barely human. All I wanted to do was track down specific people in the chaos and tear them apart. And that's exactly what I did. And then I ran,"he said,"I think maybe the most rotten thing is that I still don't feel bad. I feel nothing. For all the kids that died, not a flicker of guilt. For all the people I killed, even recently, nothing. The only action I truly feel guilt for is Octavia. That's all. She's the only one,"he smiled. Not a smile of jest, but the kind of smile you get on your face when you hear something so ridiculous that it's all you can do in response.
The blood mage shook his head."Nah, your guild master said it loud and clear. I'm an animal that needs to be caged. If that doesn't scream "he's crazy" I don't know what does. People are scared of me, I know they are. Even Alyssa, your strongest S-class, avoided any eye contact. None of them wanted me to so much as look at them in case I locked onto them as a target,"he said with a tone of amusement.
Raine knew all the things Kaya as saying were true. The people who has experimented on him were indeed monsters and in being that, had turned him into one as well.
He quietly wondered whether his mother had ever sung to him. It was one of the first times since regaining his humanity under Celeste's guidance that she's entered his mind. He couldn't imagine what she looked like nor what she sounded like. Same story with his father. He didn't know them. Didn't have a clue what had happened to them. For all he knew, they could have voluntarily given him up. They even could have been one of the scientists. He shook his head to rid himself of these thoughts. It wasn't something he was interested in,"If it makes you feel any better...,he began, choosing his words carefully,"Regardless of ending up back here... I think that your father would be extremely proud of you."As the last few words left his mouth, the unnerving sound of a heavy door opening above them resounded down the staircase and through the hallway that separated their two cells. They were back.
OOC: I thought since Shaw had handed the stuff to Ciaran, we should prepare for the return.

She sat in silence while Raine spoke about those moments from his childhood. The moments he broke free from his tormentors and launched an unbridled rampage on them. Of how he left children behind in his bid to destroy those who had hurt him so badly. It was difficult to comprehend. How someone could be so far gone, at such a young age, that they cared for nothing other than revenge. Yet, she could understand it to an extent. There had been times that the others she’d been locked up with had voiced similar desires. Her father tried to keep her innocent of those conversations. But she’d overheard enough to know what they meant. “I get it,” she said after a moment. “Sorta. Wanting to hurt others that hurt you is part of our instinct I think. It’s something we all have to fight. Being that young makes it harder to fight it. What they did to you didn’t help any either.” Kaya chewed on her bottom lip. “I can’t say leaving those kids behind like that is okay. They deserved a fighting chance too. But, I also can’t blame you completely. If your other half is always in control when these things happen, then it makes a weird sense that you wouldn’t feel guilty...wouldn't it?” She was no psychiatrist, but there had to be some explanation as to his lack of guilt for those he killed. Saying he was entirely void of emotion just didn’t work. His guilt over what he did to Octavia was proof enough of that.
Kaya scoffed, “It’s hard to imagine Aly scared of anyone. She’s one of the scariest people I know.” Her tone softened as she shook her head. “I don’t think Master Clement would’ve wanted you caged like an animal. He could be a tough Master but he wasn’t a monster. Master Celeste wasn’t an idiot either from what I heard. There’s gotta be something she recognized in you that made her want to give you a chance. That’s my take on it anyway,” she shrugged. Of course, the teenager never attended the meetings. Never heard the discussions about him or saw the looks toward him. This was her first interaction with the blood mage. Granted, it could skew her perceptions of him, though she liked to believe there was more to it. If a person was hellbent on destruction, then there was no way a guild master of an official guild would risk keeping them around. “Like I said, those monsters are what made you like this. I’m not saying you don’t have some fault...for the recent stuff...but you’re not irredeemable. I mean, look at how you want to protect your guild.” No matter what anyone said, Raine’s desire to keep the other Sabertooths from harm spoke volumes of how far he’d come from the child who’d leave behind helpless victims.
Speaking of her mother brought various emotions to the fore. The last time she saw her mother, as well as her brother, was after she sung her a lullaby. Before the raid that night. Had they managed to get away? Her father said they had. He’d been adamant they had. They weren’t brought to the facility with them, after all, and their bodies weren’t being lorded over them so there was no evidence to the contrary. Kaya held on to that truth. Even now, despite being captive again, she felt happy. Content to know her mother and brother were able to continue on living. I wonder if he had a family? What would they be like? Her reverie was interrupted by Raine’s quiet words. A smile of gratitude touched her lips. “Thanks, Raine.” The dragon slayer hardly had time to finish. Sounds of the metal door opening reverberated throughout the cells. Familiar and unfamiliar scents drifted on the recycled air. Kaya stiffened, steeling herself for whatever was to come next. For whatever they had planned.
