What is a Foxen?

Simply speaking, Foxen are highly intelligent mammals indigenous to the pocket dimension of Yorkshiredale. They either live freely in each other's company, wandering the countryside of Yorkshiredale, or they pairbond with a guardian who takes care of them, egg to adulthood. Guardians are invited to stay at The Grange as permanent houseguests, or to take their Foxen home with them to their own realms through The Grange Library's magic mirror. Even if Foxen are taken away from Yorkshiredale, they will want to visit from time to time, and they're always welcome to do so.

What's all this about Hunting and Finding?

All Foxen are born with the inherent ability to find lost or missing things through quests called Hunts. Good Hunters and Finders are well respected among Foxen, and even Foxen who don't live in Yorkshiredale will command respect if they're an experienced Hunter.

All Hunting and Findings are roleplayed quests moderated by an established Steeplechase staff-member and all successful Hunts and Findings will result in the location of special items, abilities, or prestiege ranks.

Are these roleplay heavy pets then?

They don't have to be. Even if you just show up, buy a foxen at flatsale and never show up again, your Foxen will grow to adulthood. You just won't get any of the neat and cool extra stuff that the Hunting Foxen get. Your Foxen will also probably be deeply depressed that he doesn't get to Hunt, since finding things is their nature. I guess he could always find your slippers for you, or your car keys.

Pairbonding?

An adopted Foxen can either be left to run around freely on the Moors with its fellows, or it can be pairbonded to a specific owner. You keep the foxen either way, but just be aware that unbonded Foxen can be more rebellious to their owners. Bonded foxen are bonded through ceremony when they're still kits and are very loyal to their masters, serving as familiars and companions wherever their masters lead. Unbonded foxen and wild foxen have a tendency to see them as housepets though, so they may not get a huge amount of respect from those on the Dale. Also, once a Foxen has been bonded, it cannot ever attain a rank among the wild Foxen, because it is too devoted to its master to spend the time and effort necessary to reach a rank among the wild Foxen.

Egg - Like Gaian-related wildlife, Foxen hatch from eggs. Eggs need to be kept warm and the best way to do this is to wear them in something like a baby sling. The eggs are hard as stones, so you could probably play tennis with one with no danger of breaking it. Eggs are actually very impressionable, much like babies in the womb, and can be influenced through singing to them, or talking to them, or reading aloud. We don't take any responsibility for Deus making fun of you for singing to an egg, though.

<center>User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.</center>
Wee - This is the infant stage of a Foxen. They can't walk yet, and really only move around by squirming on their bellies. Don't think this means they're easy to keep track of! Like most babies, wee Foxen love to explore and are always getting themselves into trouble. They may babble incoherently for long periods of time, and have a vocabulary of a few words, usually relating to the things they like and which they are often fond of shouting repeatedly to get what they want. So wee Foxen are sweet and easy to manage, and some are royal terrors. Baby Foxen have milk teeth as well, so watch out, you may get some love bites from your baby!

<center> User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. </center>
Kitling - If you thought babies were trouble, you have no idea about Kitlings. Kitlings are always getting themselves into trouble and needing other people to get them out of it (namely you). Incredibly curious, they ask questions about the world constantly, so you better be prepared with answers. With more complex desires and wants than babies, Kitling Foxen will be pining to go on their first hunt. If they're mature and responsible, they may start Hunting at an early age. Heck, even if they're not mature and responsible, you may not be able to keep them from hunting at an early age.

Reynards and Vixen - Adult foxen can be very independent, or they can be very clingy, depending on how you've raised them. If they're bonded, their greatest joy will be being by your side. If they're unbonded, the desire to Hunt will take them out of your company at least part of the time. Adult foxen are highly intelligent and fully developed and realized individuals and may resent babying. Again, it all depends on the Foxen.

<img src="http://www.chibimoon.net/foxen/risen-species.jpg"></center>
The Risen Foxen - Vulpes Indago Caelum - Hailing from the high rock formations of Wuthering Heights, Risen Foxen have a tendency to be haughty and vain. They usually consider themselves better than the other species of foxen and adhere to a very rigorous code of conduct. They think of themselves as nobles among the foxen and as such deserving great respect. - Nickname: The Gentry.

Risen Foxen come in a wide variety of colors, but they are as a rule delicately shaded, pastels and other fair colors.

<center><img src="http://www.chibimoon.net/foxen/grounded-species.jpg"> </center>
The Grounded Foxen - Vulpes Indago Humus - The truest and original form of the Foxen, the Grounded Foxen come from the Moors themselves where they live in loosely organized packs. Generally friendly and fun-loving, the Grounded Foxen are both the most natural and normal species of Foxen, but also the one most prone to mutation. Grounded Foxen are largely very accepting, and occasionally, outcasts from the Risen Foxen may find homes among them. Packs have no real established social structure, although great hunters and finders are always honored among them. Nickname: The Hunting.

Grounded Foxen almost always come in natural colors found on other animals, although they are often patterened, striped and spotted, and they also enjoy painting themselves in patterns and rolling in strangely colored dirt to make themselves unique.

<center><img src="http://www.chibimoon.net/foxen/deep-species.jpg"></center>
The Deep Foxen - Vulpes Indago Inferus - Often shunned by the other species of Foxen if only because coming from the Baskerville Bogs gives them something of a stench, the Deep Foxen aren't evil, per see, they just despise rules and will break them whenever possible. Deep Foxen society is more primitive than either the Grounded Foxen or the Risen Foxen, and usually amounts to who can whip the tar out of everyone else. Hunting and Finding is still a valued skill, but in the end, the Bog Chieftan rules all. Deep Foxen are often naughty and self-interested, but they aren't really bad kids. Well, most of them at least. Nickname - The Stinky. They really get no respect.

Deep Foxen are usually mottled or speckled to help them blend in with their boggy surroundings. They've been spotted mostly in dark or bold colors, although across the entire spectrum.

Obviously, breeding is closed until we have some adults :3.

As for details, I can tell you that Foxen lay clutches of two to four eggs and that all species can interbreed. When breeding is open, you'll be able to get a nesting burrow one of two ways. The first is to wait until I have a whim and open one up. Then you can pay a fee and secure a nesting burrow for your foxen. The second way is to have either both or one of the foxen who want to raise a family go on a hunt for a special nesting item. If you get a special nesting item, then you get a nesting burrow free!

More information on nesting items as the time comes.

Wuthering Heights - The high rock formation where the Risen Foxen hold court.

The Moors - Most of the countryside in Yorkshiredale that isn't something else is moor, land where nothing grows but heather and gorse and broom, and nothing lives on but sheep and wild ponies -- and Foxen. The Grounded Foxen live on the moors in packs.

Baskerville Bog - The mossy swampy area that the Deep Foxen hail from. It's treacherous to go walking here. You might end up lost under the peat unless you have a Deep Foxen to guide you!

The Grange - Yorkshiredale's biggest and most well-kept manor house. Most of the residents of Yorkshiredale live here, including the owner of the manor, Deus Palmer. Guest rooms are always available to those who wish to stay, and the library boasts a strange magic mirror which allows people to gate to whatever world they like. Deus claims to have brought it back from Persia. Teddy suspects it came from a junk shop.

The Grange has a seemingly limitless number of guestrooms, a ballroom, grand library, conservatory, endless landscaped gardens, a banquet hall, and all number of other niceties.

The Manor - Yorkshiredale's only other major building. The Manor is rumored to be haunted.

Crawley Copse - Something like a forest and something not like a forest, the Copse is a good place for young Foxen to start their early hunts. The forest is home to a lot of the more traditional animal residents of Yorkshiredale - rabbits and badgers and squirrels and such.

The River Dovey - Alternately sluggish and with fits of swift whitewater, the River Dovey is safe when it's wide and quite dangerous in its narrow places. Young foxen probably shouldn't go here unless accompanied by a responsible adult who can swim. Sama has fished more than one soggy little Kitling out in the nick of time. There are freshwater mussels in the river that are good for eating, as well as any number of delicious and beautiful fish, and some Foxen have even reported finding pearls!

Yomvael's Laboratory - Yorkshiredale's secret laboratory, which is hidden underground close to the Grange. There are secret passages to it from both the Grange and Crawley Copse, and it is where Yomvael runs her entirely legal and not at all morally questionable experiments. Canny and curious Foxen may find the way into this not at all dank and quite well appointed laboratory to discover Yomvael doing... whatever Yomvael does, but watch out that you don't become an experiment or get eaten by the robotic guard sharks.

Samand'riel Sowtherby
Sama is the local Foxen expert. He loves animals and was a regular wild roving Yorkshiredale boy when he was younger. Now he lives in a little cottage behind The Grange with all number of bizarre animal friends that he's collected from all over the place. Kind and generous, he's the person to go to if you have questions about your Foxen or about Yorkshiredale in general.

Dorothea Ingram - Teddy
The lady of The Grange, Teddy is a delightful person if you catch her when she's sober, and no less than an interesting delightful person the rest of the time. She adores Foxen and is always letting them into The Grange when Deus isn't looking. She also loves houseguests, and is always inviting all manner of strange people to stay at The Grange.

The Right Honorable Jonothan Fyre Irving Palmer - Deus
The actual deeded owner of The Grange, Deus spends most of his time either doting on Teddy, absurdly drunk, or both at the same time. A big game hunter, he can often be found stalking around the grounds of The Grange and taking potshots at Foxen with a rifle. Fortunately for them, he is ususally drunk while hunting, and therefore likely to be a very bad shot. Deus has been shooting at Foxen for months now, and has yet to actually hit one. He'd probably be devestated if he hit one accidentally. They are absurdly likable, after all.

Teddy believes that Deus won the deed to The Grange in a poker match. She is probably right.

Sexton Delaney
Local resident expert on everything (excepting Foxen), Sexton is a houseguest at The Grange that never left. He's a scholar and often to be found in The Grange's library or basements, indulging in his own strange work. He's the local purveyor of potions of all types, and the person to go to if you have any sort of magical dilemma. He doesn't work for free though, and is extremely smug and self interested.

Gabriel - Gabi-princess
That's me biggrin . I love everybody and everything! I have a room at The Grange where I and my tiny wingaling dragon Ramoth stay from time to time.

Yomvael
Yomvael is Sexton's daughter, and carries the best of his traits: as well as being just as smug and self-interested as her father, she is her own scholar, something of a mad scientist, and always attempting to coax Foxen into being part of her 'experiments'. She is probably the sole reason for all the creepy mutated Foxen. Yomvael - dubbed Yoyo - is interested in long walks along the beach, pineapple daquiris, and ruling the world as the Infernal Mistress of Hell and Darkness. (Okay, that's a lie - she hates the beach.) She's a little crazy.
