Welcome to the Assignments.

This is a place where you will be handed an Assignement and complete it within a timeframe to then post (in the Picture Post) and have it critiqued by the other assignment takers as well as the regulars in the PP. Each week there will be diffrent topics for the assignment as well as techniques used. If you don't have the required eqipment for an assignment then you can skip it for that week and come again next week.

Our goal with this is to grow as artists in both technique and as a commentor.

Here you can discuss techniques used as well as give tips on how you can better yourself by taking into mind what others say about your art.
You're guarentteed a well thought out and thorough critique on the work you submit.

Our aim is to educate as well as grow as artists and promote a community for artist that want more then just a random "good job" on their art. Not only will this teach you to emulate your own skill into the assignments, but also use your imagination. Have an idea behind the work you do, we will give you an idea, you have to translate it into a "story". There have to be a feeling behind it.

For example: If this weeks assignment is "Man and dog, drawn in realistic form, or as close to as you are able.", you may use your ow characters as the subjects and try use the required "realism" as a good way to practice not only your human anathomy in realism, but also the animal's.

We will have little "have to"s in this. Like story idea explination, required tools, or certain things like background or profile shot or something like that. All for the sake of Growing as an artist.

Enjoy your stay.

[How We Be]

There are a few simple rules for participation.

  • For every image you submit, you must also give a good critique.

In order to ensure that everyone gets the well thought out critique they deserve, we have to make sure that everyone does their part. You will have (generally) one week to complete the picture. When they are posted, you have until the next assignment to finish a critique. We move week to week to give everyone plenty of time. It's unfair to others to get and not give back, so if you are selfish and don't invest the time others are investing in you, you're out. No one gets to choose who they critque or who critiques them to get a fresh perspective each time. No exceptions.

  • Give a good critique.

Strengths, weaknesses. What works, what doesn't. SUGGEST HOW WEAKNESSES CAN BE IMPROVED. Your reviews should use the requirements a well as demonstrate your own knowledge and experience. We're here to teach each other. No mean spirited comments or blowing sugarcoated sunshine up the asses of and from members. Also, we're not english majors here. Some of us don't speak english as our first language. We're not expecting perfect grammar and spelling, but please try and type so people can actually read it. No chatspeak.

When you get your reviews, READ THEM. Your response will show just how well you read and understand them. Learn something. We shouldn't see the same mistakes over and over and over. If you continue to do that, then you aren't really learning anything. This isn't the art arena. We're not here to show off. This isn't a competition either, so don't let the skill and experience of other members scare you. Also, people who are "better" should remember that a professional artist can still learn something from a first year student.

  • Submitting assignments to guarrentee a critique is by invitation only.

The procedure to join is in the next post.

Weekly submissions need to also be "joined" by members so we can make sure we know who is in. Joining is as simple as submitting on time. Unfortuantely, we can't guarrentee you a critique for anything late. Having your submission in by Friday is the best thing. You basically have until whenever I roll out of bed on Sunday.

You don't have to participate every week. Though summer does make things easier, we all have lives to live. We do ask that you try to particiapte at least twice a month though.

Joining is required so we can be sure everyone gets a fair and equal oppertunity for critque. We ask that no one who isn't a listed member post images in the associated threads. By all means, comment, critique and enjoy when they're posted in PP, but image posts by people who aren't lmembers will be considered spam and treated accordingly.

Invited

(PMs sent.)

If you haven't been invited yet, don't feel bad. It's maybe because we haven't seen you around Picture Post yet or we're still checking around there for people we feel would be interested in participating.

[Privacy Policy]

We ask that all members respect our privacy by not distributing the test or distributing any PMs you get from Nat, Haneru, or myself without expressed permission.

[Harrassment Policy]

I'm fairly certain that people will feel slighted in the future should they not be accepted. I ask that you report all incidents of possible harrassment or any related thread to me via PM instead of responding.

I refuse to publically name people who are essencially "banned" but I do keep an offsite list.

Internal disagreements should be kept private as well. Anyone making any threads about another member or flaming another member elsewhere will be banned. Zero tolerance. If you cannot come to a civil resolution, PM one of the officers and stop contact until we can respond to you.

[Submission Policy]

Please submit your work as follows:
  • Post your thread between Saturday 12 noon EST and Sunday 12 noon EST. Not before or after.
There will be an announcement anyway, so you won't have to figure out when that is. You have a 12 hour span to do this, but if there is some problem that makes it so that you can't, please PM one of the officers and let us know.
  • Name your thread properly so we can identifiy it easily.

Assignment Week [insert #] - [Assignment description (after the - in the title.]

ex. Assignment Week 1 - Monster Design

  • Post a link to your thread in our Off topic thread.
All your links will be added to the post in this thread with the assignment so we can all find the threads easily when it's time to critique.

Flag Up in The Air! - World Cup 06 Poster Design

Assignment
The Ivory Coast of South Africa is gripped in bloody civil war. That's on hold right now and men on opposing sides of the battle stand side by side as the Ivory Coast team. People from all over the world that never would have gone otherwise are flying to Germany to watch the event. People of all nations have come together. It doesn't matter how rich the country is. Everyone is on an even playing field. This is the most important sporting event in the world. World Cup.

Create a poster in honor of your country to celebrate everyone's efforts at the World Cup. Your country doesn't have to be the country you live in. It can be the country of your parentage, or heritage as well.
Things to ask yourself:
What is it I want to say to my team? (Show support) How can I affectively use color to help say my message? How can I arrange shapes to get people to look where I want them to look on my image? Do I want text? What kind of text would be most affective? Do my shapes, text, and color arrangement choices carry so someone across a room can see everything? If it were printed large and I were in the stands holding this up, could people easily read it?

Some things to remember:
Clutter is not affective. If something is too busy, it's hard to read.
Script is usually not readable close up, let alone from a distance.
Print quality is 300dpi (resolution).
Negative space creates shapes as well.
If you actually make this print quality, this makes for an excellent portfolio piece. wink

Requirements
  • The only colors that should appear are colors in your country's flag. This includes any lineart and text.
  • One country per design. People of dual parentage (like myself) may want to do a second design if time permits.
  • Any text should support your design instead of distracting from it. Ideally, creating a type would be best, but realistically, just staying clear of overused and easily recognized computer fonts is best. Please be mindful of copyrights where is comes to text, such as text created by a company for specific products, like games.
  • Your message of support should be clear in the image and not just said in the text.

Objective
To create a poster using a pre-determinded color set that demonstrates an understanding of layout for print quality images.

Family Affair - Creature Illustration

Assignment
Creatures, no matter how horrific, are born from one another just as we are. They create progeny to propogate the species, just like us.

Use your monster design to create a family unit. Create a mate and depict them together with thier (at least fairly) newborn offspring. Things to ask yourself:
How many would be in a litter? Smaller creatures or creatures that are lower on the food chain tend to have more offspring to a litter. Larger creatures would eat out all the food in the area if they overpopulate.
Are the young born live? That's how mammals typically do it. Are they hatched from eggs? Are the eggs hard shelled or membranes?
Are the young born helpless? Are they born standing and ready to run?
How much care must the parents give them? How hard is the birth on the parents? Do both parents rear the young, or does one move on after mating?

Everything in this situation is up to you. Depict them however you like.

Requirements
  • Parents that are in the child's early life and the entire litter should be depicted. (Both or one, depending on who sticks around.) They can be at any stage, as long as they are still children and dependent on their parents.
  • The family should be depicted in it's habitat.
  • The relationship between figures should be present without explanation.
  • This should be a full illustration with a background. The medium and style are totally up to you.

Objective
To illustrate relationships between non-human characters while intergrating them in a suitable enviornment.

Please note the change in time frame for the assignment. Thank you.

Okay open.

Assignments starts on sunday. I hope that people would like to join in. The theme and requirements will be revealed then so that everyone will have the same ammount of time to finish it.

In the meantime give examples on things to do in the future, give examples on artists or techniques...

ENJOY your stay!
Wow, we used to do this in The Slaving Artist Who Get Whipped Group (SAWGWG) which was a guild a couple years back. The Guild is still around bu no one posts in it anymore because not enough people wanted to do it.

http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/index.php?guild_id=1108

That was the guild. It was a lot of fun.

If you ask me a guild will never have the same impact as a open forum. I dislike the guilds.

Pretty much. Older people get bored and new ones can't find it.

Excellent ideas! I'll add them.
We'd love it if you'd post a bit about yourself. Nat and I need to do that too. xp

Edit: Week 1 is already set, but it won't be posted until Sunday, May 26th. Submissions must be in by Sunday, June 3rd. On the 3rd, I'll post the list for people to get the image they'll be critiquing. 3nodding

Edit: We're still working out how to accept submissions and set up the PP threads. Any suggestions are welcome.

Edit: Your sig wins, Haneru. You can't mask it with cuteness. I'm onto you and I love it. xd

This might be getting somewhere.

People who have sent me joining PMs, I'm sorry I have yet to answer them, I've been busy offline.

I will get on with them first thing after getting back from work in a few hours.

The thread is in your name, so they're sending the bulk of them to you. If there was a way for them to tell which one of us is online... hm...
