-----Challenge 3.1.1: Center of the World--------------------------------------------------------------
Look at your map. Is there a center? Even if the world is a globe, it was drawn on a flat surface. Pretend that this map was created by a person in your world. Why was it positioned the way it was?

Lomeelas is a globe, with no known ‘ends’, but most maps exclude the large areas of empty ocean from the three eastern island continents to the edges of Ellyria and Korourn. Ocean travel in Lomeelas is incredibly dangerous and very rarely partaken in; therefore one may state that the ends of the world are where the ocean begins.

The standard Lomeelian map is drawn with the largest continent, Rydy, at the center: The continent with the largest population of ispolin in Lomeelas, including the ever expanding empire of the Zajians. As the Zaijans are arguably the most powerful nation in Lomeelas at the present age, it only makes sense that the standard is based around them. The map is divided so that ispolin territory is easily described as ‘in the east’ and alfar-dominated territory is ‘in the west.’

For most nations in the west, that have not attempted much ocean (or sky) travel, the map is often reduced to a vertical diagram exploring only Ellyria & Onea. This is considered the Alfar (or Human) Standard map. Nations in Korourn often have a smaller, continent specific map as well. Very few nations have attempted to traverse the globe, and therefore have little knowledge of what lies across the oceans.

                                -----Challenge 3.1.4: Wilderness--------------------------------------------------------------
How do ideas of nature and wilderness fit into society? (Are there any uncolonized areas in your world?) Do any societies make efforts to explore uncharted areas? Why do they value exploration (or why don't they)?

With so many sentient species being intimately connected with nature, there aren’t many areas of total wilderness left to explore, although one’s definition of ‘wilderness’ may depend on their species and homeland. Alfar in particular often live as ‘naturally’ as possible, as their physiology allows them to be better adapted to this. Their civilizations are often not as developed as those of humans (generally not very good at survival in harsh conditions) or other races.

Even so, there are still many uncolonized areas in Lomeelas, due to natural dangers that make exploration – let alone development – nigh on impossible. The island of Lacaria, to the east of Ellyria, is one such place. No civilizations are present here, and many of the living creatures have been twisted and deformed from exposure to wild magic. The island seems inclined to attack any non-native being that sets foot on its shores.

Similarly, the small archipelago of Issmora Yraye is undeveloped, but primarily for superstitious reasons. According to Ydarian mythos, these islands were the personal playing ground of Nydidian, the Ydar of Chaos, and anything that sets foot is driven to rage and insanity. The islands are heavily covered in plant life, but possess no animal life above insects.

                                -----Challenge 3.1.5: Altitude Extremes--------------------------------------------------------------
What is the highest point on your world? What is the lowest point?

                                THE VALLINDE MOUNTAINS

The Vallinde mountain range is the longest chain of mountains in Lomeelas, and one of the tallest as well, with a range that stretches from coast to coast of Manis. They are frigid, with peaks constantly swathed in snow and ice, making them very difficult for most species to traverse. Their range is serpentine and jagged, folding back and forth over itself to create a myriad of wrinkles over the face of Manis. Vallinde has been carved into tunnels and cities by dragons, developed over several thousands of years into one of the largest dragonhomes on Lomeelas.

Vallinde’s highest peak is known as Mount Maronde, and is located in the Mideast. It reaches 34,000 feet in height, and is rich in copper and nickel deposits. Its peak is constantly shrouded in cloud and sees very little activity, from dragons or other species. The air is very thin, making it difficult for many species, especially large ones like dragons, to fly.

                                THE MARQASH CAVERNS

The Marqash Caverns are located in the northern steppes of Ellyria, and are considered the deepest point on Lomeelas’ surface. The caverns are a deep underground system of tunnels and holds, which spread from the edge of the Agard Sea to hundreds of miles inland. Many of these tunnels are underwater, making it difficult to traverse the entire length of the system. The majority of the tunnels developed naturally through erosion, but the Marqash dverger (who the caves are named after) have excavated them further, creating large halls for habitation.

Despite being located so deep beneath the surface, the Marqash Caverns are full of life, much of which is native exclusively to its hollows. Several species of blindfish, amphibians, insects, and fungi have developed here in isolation, and are perfectly adapted to life underground.

The Marqash Caverns are infamously known for being one of the few locations that wild magic cannot reach, making them a safe haven from its destructive forces.

                                -----Challenge 3.1.6: Difficult Terrain--------------------------------------------------------------
What area is particularly difficult to traverse and why?

Lomeelas’ oceans are nigh on impossible to traverse, making travel between continents very difficult for those that don’t possess flight-capable technology, such as airships. While travelling short distances from the coast is fairly safe, once one enters open water, one is highly unlikely to return to land unharmed. It’s not difficult to travel between islands in an archipelago, or make it from northern Ellyria to Onea, for the seas are not large or deep enough, but any one of Lomeelas’ three main oceans are completely uncrossable by boat.

The reason for these dangers is simply. Lomeelas’ oceans are inhabited by gigantic sea creatures known as leviathans, who can easily grow to be several miles in length. As very few people survive an encounter with a leviathan, not much is known about them. They appear to be at least partially intelligent and do not try to make physical contact with boats. Instead, they drain the life force from any living thing upon seafaring vessels, essentially killing any crew that comes in close contact with them. The crew of airships have claimed to feel increasingly lethargic and irritable the further out to sea they reach, but so far no crew has been killed from flying above waters.

                                -----Challenge 3.1.7: Civilization--------------------------------------------------------------
What area is very harsh but still supports civilization? What area is prime real estate for civilization?

Many of the harshest areas of Lomeelas are still inhabited, largely by the alfar and dverger who are well-adapted to deal with extremes. One such example is the Kava Desert of central-western Ellyria.

                                KAVA DESERT
An extremely hot and arid location, which stretches from the Kharhe mountains to Sarde steppes of Ellyria, making it the largest desert of Lomeelas. It contains only a few small rivers, fed from the eastern coasts of Ellyria. The vast majority of water must be obtained from underground wells and the Kaman tree, a deep rooted, bulbous plant which manages to eke out a living here. The Kava Desert is dry all year long, with little to no rainfall.

The west of Kava consists of rolling dunes and is subject to extreme winds, making deadly sandstorms commonplace. The further east one travels the calmer the weather, with the Kharhe mountains blocking most stormy ocean weather from reaching the desert.

The most common resources here are salt and precious gems. All metals have long since been excavated by dragons.

                                DOZECA RAINFOREST
Considered one of the prime locations for stone magic users, Dozeca rainforest is a large tropical jungle located in southern Rydy, expanding from coast to coast. It’s surrounded by savannah in the north and south, with some areas of semi-tropical rainforest. It’s lush with wildlife and contains several bodies of water, including the Tezina Falls, which feeds several rivers throughout the jungle. Dozeca also has a large underground cavern system in the central-west, which is often mined for precious metals and gems.

The jungle is notoriously hot and humid, and filled with many poisonous plants and biting insects. Fortunately these are not a problem for the ispolin who make their home here, with their thick skin and well-adapted temperature regulating circulatory systems. For them, Dozeca is a paradise filled with an abundance of food, water, and metals.

-----Challenge 3.1.8: Habitats Outside the Surface--------------------------------------------------------------
Are there other places besides the surface of the world that are explorable or habitable/inhabited? Caves? Floating islands? Oceans?

Much of Lomeelas’ underground is inhabitable, and indeed, is occupied by nations of dverger which spend the majority of their lives below the surface or in mountain caverns, away from sunlight which can cause severe health defects (to the point of death, in extreme cases). Most cavern systems are naturally occurring, but in the past ages, dragons have also carved out several extensive tunnel systems through mountains, cliff sides, and canyons. The largest of these are located in northern Ellyria and Onea. The known inhabited cavern systems include:
xxxxxxxxxxxx Amuuh Canyons, of north-western Ellyria. Gouged deep into the steppes and scrublands, the canyons are one of the largest expanses of natural tunnel systems in Lomeelas.

xxxxxxxxxxxx Raenir Caverns, of Onea. A small collection of caverns located near the base of the Raenir mountain chain.
xxxxxxxxxxxx Sidab Caverns, of central-west Ellyria. Often the source of many sinkholes along the deserts of central Ellyria. The Sidab Caverns are naturally occurring, with only minor altercations done to expand certain tunnels to make towns and halls. The dverger who live here are extremely rugged survivalists, and continue to dig deep to find nutrient rich earth.
xxxxxxxxxxxx Sornir Cliff Caves of eastern Ellyria. are almost entirely dragon made and expand many hundreds of miles deep into the earth. There are tunnel entrances all long the canyon faces, many of which have been blocked off by the dverger inhabitants to avoid exposure to sunlight.

Are there any quirks of geography in this world that could not possibly exist in our own?

Wild magic constantly twists and changes everything it comes into contact with, including the natural world. While spots of significant change are rare, there are a few otherworldly lands large enough to be noteworthy.

                                WASTELANDS OF KOROURN
The continent of Korourn is mainly tropical and sub-tropical rainforest, and it appears as much throughout the entire islands from the air. It is not until one lands and inspects the plant life more closely that they discover the abnormalities of this landscape. While true plants still exist, the vast majority of Korourn has been twisted into inorganic facsimiles of the natural world. What appears to be a flower is actually a long stem of brass with delicate copper petals. Everything is metal, from the blades of grass to the tallest trees. Even the animals born on Korourn often sport abnormalities such as hooves and claws made of metal, and hair that are actually tiny slivers of copper or gold.

                                AUVIIS FUNGAL FOREST
A small forest located in southern Rydy, entirely unlike the jungle around it. Auviis is perfectly round , as if a gardener had come along and drawn up the land himself. While it’s considered a forest, Auviis does not possess any trees. Instead, the primary form of life here is fungus, with giant mushrooms growing to over thirty feet in height or more. Many of the magically enhanced species of fungus have glowing photophores, which give off an eerie blue light. Plant life is lush and varied, as the fungus are extremely efficient at turning decayed matter into nutrient rich soil. Unfortunately the fungus exudes a toxic chemical, which causes delirium and sickness in most sentient races.

What might be considered one of the most remote locations, civilization wise, in your world?

The most remote civilization of Lomeelas is the dverg nation of Sidur. While technically part of Onea, Sidur is not located on the main island, but rather one of the smaller branching islands to the north. The land is mainly tundra and mountain, peppered with a few sparse coniferous trees. It is in the mountains that the Sidurian dverger reside, in a system of natural and expanded caverns that range from the highest peaks to deep down below the earth, where there is rock and soil to support life.

Being so far north and unconnected to any other body of land, most don’t bother to travel to Sidur, leaving it isolated from the rest of the world. It has few precious metals and the ground is nearly impossible to cultivate to sustain plants or animals. It has some mineral deposits of nickel, but the climate makes any attempt to access the mountains nigh on impossible. Freezing temperatures, planes of ice, and a continuous barrage of heavy snowfall and storm makes Sidur a hostile area for anyone who strays outside the protection of the mountain caves.

How much interaction does each continent have with the others?

                                ELLYRIA:
As part of western Lomeelas, Ellyria is fairly isolated from most of the other continents. Onea is the only neighbor close enough to travel to easily. The human civilizations of Ellyria do much trade and commerce with western Onea.

                                ONEA:
Of the western continents, Onea has relations with the most continents, including its close neighbor Ellyria. Because of a small chain of islands between the two continents, Onea also done some trade and commerce with northern Rydy.

                                KOROURN:
Korourn is the most isolated of the continents, having no chains of islands to allow travel by sea. They see some action from the dragons of Manis, and have had some historical dealing with the sub-continent Tarut.

                                MANIS:
The dragon continent, the residents of Manis have widespread contact with the other continents… but only by the dragons themselves, who are capable of flying the great distances needed to make it across oceans. Their eastern borders are sometimes mined by citizens of Valuliel.

                                VALULIEL:
One of the four eastern continents, Valuliel has active trade and communication with Rydy, although primarily nations of the south. Furthermore, Valuliel and Euphiton share trade routes.

                                EUPHITON:
One of the four eastern continents Euphiton has active trade and communication with Rydy. Furthermore, Euphiton shares trade routes with Valuliel and Svalbard.

                                SVALBARD:
One of the four eastern continents Svalbard has active trade and communication with Rydy although primarily nations of the north. Furthermore, Svalbard shares trade routes with Euphiton.

Further subdivide the contents by region. Regions can be divided by any metric, and do not have to be absolute. (For example, people debate whether Pakistan is part of the middle east or south asia) Each continent should be divided into at least 2 regions. List the regions and write a sentence or two about what makes them distinct.

                                -----Challenge 3.2.1: Transportation--------------------------------------------------------------
How do people get around in your world? What animals are employed in transportation, if any? What challenges/advantages does the terrain provide?

Transportation technology is quite advanced in the eastern continents, particularly Rydy where several nations of ispolin have developed amazing steam-powered engines, making travel faster and more efficient. These engines have been developed for both air, sea, and land travel. Primarily, there are airships, large wooden boats attached to giant balloons, kept aloft by the hot air expelled by steam engines. Propellers are attached at the back and sides which allow for forward motion and acute steering. Most of these airships are fairly small, only 30 feet in length with a sparse crew to man the deck and keep the engines operational. The largest ships are rare and expensive, both to purchase, maintain, and travel with, and are most often used for travel across the oceans.

Rydy also has primitive locomotives, run by steam and coal. Because metal is a precious commodity in Lomeelas, there are very few of these trains, and only one major railroad that extends the full length of the continent of Rydy, allowing for more efficient trading. Travel by train is incredibly expensive, and even those who have the money are often turned down. Train travel is at an absolute premium, and the railroads are guarded fiercely from metal-devouring dragons.
Travel by boat is often dangerous business, and no ships venture out into open ocean. Boats are used only to travel short distances between islands, and the close continents of the east.

There are many domesticated animals used for transportation throughout Lomeelas, many of which are also used as draft beasts for pulling trade goods and carriages. Land travel in the warmer climates is often done with small sauropods and hadrosaurs, long-lived, gentle natured, and generally inexpensive to feed. The colder climates utilize primitive three-toed ungulates such as the chorik beast.

                                -----Challenge 3.2.2: Mileage--------------------------------------------------------------
How much traveling does a typical person do? How many miles away from home might they expect to travel in their lifetime?

Unless one has an occupation that requires travel, one does not go far from their home nation. Travelling is mainly done for trade, exploration of undiscovered lands (by those nations strong and affluent enough to do so), and war. While a person of wealth may choose to traverse larger stretches of land and explore the many wonders of the world, there are physical limitations to their adventures. Many species are aggressive towards aliens, unwilling to allow someone of a different race safe passage through their lands. Travel across the ocean by ship is impossible for any great length, meaning one rarely ever leaves the safety of land to explore other continents.

There are several nomadic cultures in Lomeelas, including the Barith and Anandus of Ellyria. They travel across many nations and spend most of their lives on the go. Their lives are guided by travel, following food and weather patterns, never settling in one place for more than a season.

                                -----Challenge 3.2.3: Around the World--------------------------------------------------------------
How long would it take for someone to traverse the entire world, either by circling it, or hitting an end, or what have you? What would be their quickest path and mode of transportation?

The only feasible means of making it across the entire globe is by air ship, traveling across ocean open is too dangerous. There are a few fleets of airships created just for this purpose, making it from continent to continent without ever touching down on water. Because there is no safe opportunity to fish or obtain other resources, including fresh water, travel must be quick. No ships have attempted to make the journey straight across the equator, but rather hop from continent to continent refueling as they go, this makes travel somewhat longer, but infinitely safer.

The fastest journey one could make across Lomeelas, keeping in mind the need to touch down for supplies, would be around 60 days, which includes travel through the majority of continents. If one were to go straight across (dangerous and as of yet unattempted) travel time would be nearly halved, taking around 40 days by airship.

What areas of the world, if any, can be considered frontier? Are there any areas that are uncharted by civilization?

Much of the continent Manis is unexplored by the sentient races, apart from dragons who live here almost exclusively. Manis is considered the dragon continent by those who know of it, and much of its northern plains and boreal forests are covered in the old, stone bodies of deceased dragons, which the living guard tenaciously. Manis has many valuable metals and minerals for mining, both in the plains and the mountains, but any attempt to do so has resulted in vicious retaliation from the dragons. Therefore no other species has managed to settle here, leaving much of the continent completely uncharted. The few maps and records of Manis are incomplete and vague. Only the dragons know Manis well, and they have no intention of sharing its secrets with lesser beings.

Apart from Manis, many of the northern archipelagos are uninhabited, largely due to the poor climate and lack of good growing soil. Such places include the islands north of mainland Rydy and the majority of Onea.

                                -----Challenge 3.2.5: The Known World--------------------------------------------------------------
How much does the average person know about the shape of their world? To what extent has it been explored?

Knowledge of Lomeelas and what lies within it varies greatly from nation to nation, dependent on location, affluence, and technology, as well as cultural opinion. In general terms, the eastern continents have the greatest knowledge of the world, as explorers have more success traveling between continents, with no deadly ocean to block the way. Knowledge of all the eastern continents, as well as Manis, is available for all those who live in Rydy, and Svalbard, Euphiton, and Valuliel have access to this as well.

The western continents, on the other hand, are limited in their ability to travel. Many nations do not believe there is anything at all beyond the ocean, and are completely oblivious to the existence of the eastern world. Since explorers and conquerors from Rydy have made their way to Ellyria and Onea, some of the western nations are becoming more educated about the globe, but those who have yet to be exposed to ispolin conquerors only have theories to go by.

The subcontinent of Tarut is as of yet unexplored by any outside nation, and therefore does not have knowledge about the rest of the world. Tarutians believe that they are the center of the world, isolated in a plane of water that extends for eternity, stretching out into the stars.

Are there any civilizations that are unaware of each other's presence?

There are many civilizations in Lomeelas that exist in partial or total isolation from other civilizations. Some areas, such as the subcontinent of Tarut, have a few separate cultures in them, but remain completely isolated from the rest of Lomeelas because of oceans and lack of travel technology. As far as Tarutians are concerned, they are the only existing civilizations of Lomeelas, the only areas of land, in a world entirely surrounded by water and peril.

There are also several dverg civilizations that have very minor contact with other nations, residing in such hostile or hard to reach locations that it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for other races to reach. Many dverger live deep below the ground in cave systems, or high labyrinths of mountain caverns. As they do not require animals or plants for food, or clothing to protect them from the elements, these isolated dverg civilizations have no reason to explore outside their homes for trading partners. Because of their sensitivity to sunlight, most dverger rarely set foot on the surface of the earth.

Draw a map showing the world as it had been in the past. Indicate the time that world existed as shown on this map. What caused the change? If there was no great worldwide shift, narrow your focus down to a region that has seen some sort of drastic geographical change and explain that instead.
