August 1st, 2016 - - We begin the Forbidden Forest Meta!

July 17th, 2016 - - We've hired itsie bitsie spider onto our coloring team!

May 6th, 2016 - - We have hired smolderingskies and Cerl Temius as loremasters, as well as promoted nepsah to secondary co-owner and Embi-lamb to lore-apprentice!!

March 25th, 2016 - - We've added a new rule, found here!

January 10th, 2016 - - We've hired a few new artists/Loremasters, and changed the rules for winning a Franken child! We've also released Daydreams recently!

September 11th, 2015 - - Nightmare Academy finished its reopening event and now is mostly settled! We are hiring, which can be found here! We are seeking one to two new colorists, and hiring will end October 11th.

August 15th, 2015 - - Nightmare Academy, after about a few months of silence, has come back with some brand new mechanics, a new guild and thread, and new lore! We have tons of new features for everyone to check out, and we've changed how growing works, so please go through our new guild and read over the threads!

We have a reopening event going on in our guild! You can find plenty of games in the fairgrounds, and an ORP! If you want a Nightmare please check these games out!

We also are opening breedings for the very first time. Typically breedings require an RP of your Nightmare showing a desire for kids, but as a special "welcome back" present we've decided that anyone can enter breedings without the intent RP just this time! You still must enter your Nightmare into Breeding Permissions!

Customs are open!

Anyway, we hope everyone has a good time in the reopening event and gets back into RPing their characters and mingling! We're so grateful for the chance to revamp this shop, and are excited to once again see everyone and open our doors! If you want to help bring in new blood, please give our advertising contest a check!

01. – Follow the Gaia ToS at all times.
02. – Be civil towards one another in-thread and the guild, whether or not you like a certain person. This also means be civil to newbies, even if they ask a thousand and one questions. Be welcoming to newbies, as they help our shop grow!
03. – Try to monitor how you speak. This means please refrain from chat speak or spamming the thread. If you feel like the thread is dead and needs life, start a conversation instead of simply saying 'bump'. Chatter is always loved in the shop! Cursing, while allowed, should be kept at a minimum.
04. – While you are absolutely free to vent in-thread, please spoiler anything that could be triggering, as well as warn in red what the content may contain. This helps protect those who cannot handle certain topics, and helps you get the help you need!
05. – If you believe there is an issue with another customer that a staff member must know about, or you're aware of another breaking the rules, please contact us at the main mule: Nightmare Ava.
06. – Refrain from begging or whining for a character. We have plenty of events, and you will surely get a character through the various means we have. However, if you're caught whining, staff will be less likely to grant you a pet. Good behavior is rewarded, bad behavior is not tolerated.
07. – When you enter an event, game, or another service we provide there is a chance you'll lose. Should you lose, please remain a good-sport. There will be other chances! However, if you win, please refrain from excessively bragging.
08. – Do not copy, steal, alter, or mimic any of the graphics used in this shop. This includes but is not limited to banners, pet lines, user-made content, and such. You may place pets you own or have permission to use in your signature, in banners, and such as long as you do not alter the lines.
09. – All trades must be sent within 24 hours of acquiring a pet. Failure to do so may cause the staff who ran the game/event to re-roll for a new winner.
10. – You may not use a mule to acquire more pets. If you are caught doing so you'll immediately be blacklisted.
11. – Do not sell a pet you've received here. If you don't want a pet anymore then please find go to this thread!
12. – If you are gaming a character off, you may only advertise 3 times a week that particular game. This includes in-thread and the Skype group chat!!

01. – You need to own a pet here before you can roleplay. You may not borrow another person's pet, whether or not you have their permission.
02. – Humans do not exist in this world.
03. – RP is not required to keep your pet, ever. RP does come with perks, however! Staff may never take a pet away due to lack of RP, unless the character is essential to the lore of the shop and a warning is given before the pet is homed that RP is required to keep them.
04. – When someone declines plots, RP, or a breeding that means no. Continuing to pester them will cause a staff member to intervene.
05. – Evil characters are allowed, and loved! But, please refrain from RPing excessive violence in-guild or in-thread, as it can trigger a customer!
06. – Certain things should never be RPed in public, whether in-thread or in-guild. This includes sexual violence, abuse, torture, and other grim topics. Death is permitted, as well as fighting, but please use common sense. If we catch an RP pertaining a subject we do not permit we will delete the RP without warning and contact the participants.
07. – Plots pertaining to rape is not permitted. We are a very loose shop in general, but this is one of the limits we have. If we see in your plot thread you seeking a plot related to it, or the act being documented in your journal we will ask you to remove it. Backstories with this event in it will also be asked to be edited.
08. – In the interest to make the shop run as smoothly as possible and as well as secure safety, people who cause actual harm to a staff-member that does not occur within the shop can be removed from the shop completely to ensure safety.
09. – To join the guild you need 100 posts. If you do not have 100 posts but a friend in the shop, said friend can vouch for you and we will accept you. If you lack a friend in the shop, consistent talking in-thread will allow entry into the guild.
10. – If a staff-member quotes you with directions, please take any questions about said directions to that specific staff-member. Going to another staff-member can cause communication errors, and stress. If you are participating in customs/breedings/an event run by a specific staffer and need a direct answer about said event, please ask the person running the event.

How do I get a character?
Through various means! We are always eager to run games, events, customs, breedings, and more! Most likely you'll see a game in no time! You also can quest for a character and enter them in our monthly quest raffle in the hopes of receiving the pet for free!

Can we get a pet through RLC?
Only Bitter Owls does RLC slots, and not often. We typically rely on gold events. Please wait for Bitter to announce RLC slots before inquiring.

Can we co-own?
No. We've witnessed how it can cause drama throughout the years and, to ensure everyone is comfortable at all times, we've elected not to allow co-owning.

How long does it take for a character to grow?
Stones take one week to grow! Once a stone has awakened into an infant it will take another week to become a freshling. All other stages require RP and classes to advance.

What if I don't want to awaken my stone in a week?
That's fine! When staff post asking for the owners to RP a response, you can instead opt to let the colorist know you'd like to wait. Once you're ready, find the original post requesting the awakening and RP out your response!

Can same gendered characters breed?
Absolutely. Characters use magic to imbue stones, and up to three Nightmares at a time can imbue a stone! As it takes magic and lacks pregnancy, any gender can imbue a stone with any other gender!

How many stones can we expect to see?
One Nightmare can produce a single stone. Two together can produce two stones, or if they've RPed and posted the RP for approval they can have three stones. Three Nightmare's only have enough magic to make three stones! You make ask for less stones, as well!

What are breeding intents?
Because breeding requires a Nightmare to consciously want a stone, you must make an RP (which can be a short solo or with their breeding partner) showing their desire for a child. Breedings are never accidental, but feel free to, in-character, have your Nightmare accidentally awaken their stones!

Can I have a cosplay?
No. We do not, ever, allow cosplays. The only exception is cosplays that share colors of creatures from games/events/books (such as Pokemon). Your character may not act or resemble a non-original creation.

Below is a world suspended in eternal night and twilight, even at its brightest hours. From the icy and forbidding tundras of Boreas, to the wild woods of Zephyros, its landscape is one of haunting beauty. However, remnants of the war still plague this world and the land is scarred by the ruins of both small villages and great cities alike. Asphodel Academy was founded shortly after the war that ended, and has become the main means of educating orphan stones found in The Great Cache. The academy acts as both a home to the orphaned stones and a school, often encouraging those within it to later advance to one of the three major universities; Grendel, Leviathan, and Asterion. Currently the new headmistress of the academy is Ava, a dedicated demon who will ensure the safety of all her students no matter what the cost may be.

Gender is typically not an issue amongst this world. Nightmares can choose whatever pronouns or outward appearance of gender they wish. This is likely because of the fact that "gender" for Nightmares means little more than a vague social classification based on appearance and identity. Nightmares do not breed sexually, so there is very little emphasis put on classifying Nightmares by gender, save for identification purposes! Infants are not gendered by parents until the child begins to display a preference. The three most recognized genders are: androgynous, female, and male. Should the child grow into a body that doesn't fit their perception of themselves, they are generally encouraged by the entire community to alter their body into what the child wants.

There are many different types of people in this world! Some are more skilled in magic than others, while others sway more towards physical strength. The races, for the most part, have begun to mingle and create a world where each race can get along. Of course, you'll always find some Nightmares who refuse to play nice, especially those from the war or recent descendants of those who participated. The academy encourages all races to get along, and within its walls you'll rarely find any issues when it comes to race.

As the world's races have shared their cultures with each other, many interracial families have popped up. Hybrids are more common now than they have ever been in previous generations, especially with orphaned students who have graduated from the academy. Historically, Hybrids have primarily been found in large and diverse cities, but are becoming more common throughout the world. Hybrids are looked upon with some prejudice, only insofar as the pre-existing racial tensions that exist between some races. A Geist/Baphomet hybrid might find themselves being shunned by some particularly racist Baphomet, due to the fact that Geists once raided the Baphomet capital. You'll find plenty of Hybrids within the academy, however, as most are from stones found in the Great Cache during the war.

Nightmares have five distinct life stages! When you receive a character you should always check to see what stage they are at! You can read more about growing characters here.

Soul Stone:
Nighmares are born from soul stones, which have been imbued with the life energy of up to three parents. When the soul stone is activated, either at the end of the imbuing, or later on, the stone will glow very brightly and change into an infant. Newborns often have bits of crystal encrusting their bodies for up to two months, as well as a faint glow that lasts about two weeks. Most parents will also feel an aura about their newborn that is incredibly calming and familiar.

Soul stones will remain asleep for a week before a colorist will request the customer to awaken their stone.

Infant:
Infant Nightmares begin their lives as particularly unresponsive and easy to care for. They generally sleep soundly for the first week, then wake up every so often to interact with their parents, only to fall back into a deep slumber. During this time, they do not require food – the residual magic and the energy of their parent(s) is enough to sustain them. However, once their natural glow and crystalline deposits disappear, they will begin to be awake for longer and longer periods of time. At this point, parents will begin to feed their infants small bits of mashed-up food.

Infant Nightmares develop more quickly than humans do, and are able to crawl around and consume solid food much earlier. Infants tend to be from newborn age to toddler age.

Infants will become freshlings a week after being dropped!

Freshling:
Infants are considered freshlings once they are school-age, which is the equivalent of between four-years-old and elementary age. They are basically children, and act as such. Younger freshlings require constant care, while older ones will be able to be more independent and not require constant attention.

Freshlings require two finished RPs, one RP stating what they wish to be when they grow up, and have finished all core classes except the Life Skills class to grow. They also must have been a freshling for at least a month.

Junior:
Juniors are Nightmares who are tweens and young teens. They are generally considered to be a junior after they hit their first growth spurt, usually around 10 years old. Nightmares attending school, however, are automatically considered juniors when they hit their first year of junior classes (usually at age 11).

Juniors require two finished RPs, one RP showing how they've matured (or lack of maturity!), and have finished all core classes to grow. They also must have been a junior for at least a month.

Senior:
Seniors are older teenagers and young adults. A senior has already finished puberty, and is, physically, an adult who is strong enough to imbue a soul stone. In schools, however, senior classes start around the age of late 16, which might be before a Nighmare has finished maturing physically. Seniors who have graduated school will either attend university, work as an apprentice, or strike out into the world to find their own way.

Seniors do not grow after this stage, but may pursue higher education in universities.

Familiars:
Need a friend for your Nightmare? Look no further! Familiars vary in personality and size depending on their species, but all would make an excellent companion for the right owner. Familiars are often collected in groups, as the world doesn't seem to have as strict rules about what amount of pets is excessive. However, even those with twenty familiars are given an odd look!

Classes:
Classes are now a part of growing Nightmares, as well as an option for those who have graduated the academy to pursue further education in the universities. All students of Asphodel Academy must take classes and graduate before they can function as adults in the big world. Once they've graduated, it is an option to choose university, and often a necessity for intense jobs! Classes will be run as games/activities for customers to accomplish. Successfully fulfilling a class will earn your Nightmare one step closer to growing/graduating! You can read more here.

Clubs:
A club is where a customer can have their Nightmare create a group where like-minded individuals around the same age/grade can collect after or before school. Typically, clubs are mostly RP orientated, but each owner can decide what a club actually is. It can be just to RP and have Nightmare's collect and make friends, it could be a thread to play games and win prizes, or anything, really! Official clubs can request one item, which will be custom colored, to give to other club members! You can read more here.

Businesses and Markets:
Businesses and Markets are where customers can create shops run by their Nightmare to provide services. This could be artistic in nature or literally any service that is PG-13 in nature. These shops should be run in-character by your Nightmare. If you rather "sell" items, you can request a limited amount of trinkets and familiars for staff to custom color and you to give out at your discretion. Looking to get a Nightmare? Well, lucky for you we have several options! These are the most common options to win/obtain a Nightmare in the shop!

Premade sales, contests, raffles and auctions will be released frequently throughout the months. Freshlings and juniors acquired in events must be in academy, while seniors acquired in events can choose either to stay in academy, or automatically have graduated academy. Seniors cannot have automatically graduated university, however.

Flaffles: Customers claim tickets in hopes of winning a Nightmare. Only those RNGed will win, and the order of the winners is the order Nightmare's as distributed. Some flaffles are free, while others cost a very small fee or require a customer to post something specific!

Auctions: Auctions are rather rare, and typically display Nightmares who are special in some way, whether that be by being a rare race of having something unique. Customers bid gold, and the highest bid by the end date wins.

Games: Typically free, games are primarily held by staff! However, customers may game off stones from one of their breedings in attempts to find a suitable owner. Games range from stroke of luck activities, RP contests, quote games, and more! Nightmare Academy will try to ensure at least one game is run a month, so keep your eyes peeled!

You can also attempt to create a Nightmare from scratch! While colorists will be the only one to make Nightmare's official, you are encouraged to create quests and enter customs to try and win a concept. Breedings, while up to the artist, give you a chance to mix your favorite Nightmare's for offspring!

Customs: Customers may enter concepts related to the type of customs currently open. Should they win their Nightmare will look exactly how they wished! If a customer has quested the character and gotten it approved then the cost of the Nightmare will be reduced by 30%.

Bribes: Every month, if a colorist has completed their entire workload, they may open a bribe thread for the remainder of that month! It is the customers job to entice the colorist!

Monthly Quest Raffle: Every month we will open the monthly quest raffle, where customers may link to their approved quests. At the end of the month one winner will be RNGed and their quest will be turned into an official character.

Breedings: When breedings open, customers may enter Nightmares in an attempt to receive children. A single Nightmare can imbue a stone by themselves. Two Nightmare's can imbue stones together, and even three Nightmares can imbue stones as a group!

Some seniors have found that special someone and just want to settle down and start a family, while others just want a child to raise by themselves. In some situations, a Nightmare may even want to imbue a stone simply to help further their race! Whatever the reason, imbuing a stone is an intentional process and will always create a child if done successfully. Nightmares do not become pregnant, ever, and as a result any gender can imbue a stone with any other gender! Lone Nightmares can imbue one stone, while two Nightmares can imbue two stones and even a third one should they RP enough! Three Nightmares may always breed together to create three stones.

Related Nightmares cannot breed, as their magic is too similar and thus will either break the stone or not even summon enough magic to effect it one bit.

Those have been absolutely wonderful or absolutely terrible can be found here! Those on the blacklist are never allowed to post in NMA. Those on the greylist will be unable to do certain activities until their cooldown is up. Those on the rainbowlist have amused customers or staff enough with their adorable shenanigans. It's just a cute little list for the shop, please don't take it too seriously!
