Oh, it's not until June!
Your cat only gets wet food sometimes? Our cats are spoiled, they get a choice of wet or dry quality food all day; they self regulate. They turned 10 a few weeks ago.
The big thing was getting a computer again! Plus this month, 2 old friends I hadn't heard from in years popped back into my life. 1 is quite elderly--he was my dad's childhood friend and we've become friends. I was concerned when his email was full of odd typos, if he was suffering some kind of dementia (he's in his 90's). Happily, he isn't and is still full of life. But macular degeneration took most of his vision so the odd results were apple voice dictation. I will always have fond memories of our last visit with him; he is such a warm and funny person.
My husband went on a home improvement binge about unfinished jobs (that waited for about 20 years) so I returned home to a bit of a mess. He has since gotten most of it straightened out, but none of the pain he had matches the shade on our walls so it's patchy all over and we have to figure out how to get the right shade to fix it. I'll be glad when things look decent again. Then I plan to get a lot of artwork gathered on trips finally framed. I think I've figure out where to put all of it now.
Other than that, just catching up on all the stuff I fell behind on traveling and after. Getting there.
My cat is extremely food-motivated and I'm pretty sure he'd eat himself to death if I let him just graze haha. He gets wet food 3x a week (we like the Weruva brand), and treats every day. He's looking surprisingly chubby so I've been trying to play with him more to get him some exercise.
Wow 90s! That's really sweet that you guys still stay in contact.
Haha good for him!! I still have to replace a shower cartridge since our shower has been leaking, but I'm just so lazy... I did manage to fix the other two bathtubs and felt very empowered haha. Who knew Youtube could be such a DIY treasure trove? I've never had the guts to fix anything in my house or car because I was scared I'd cause a more expensive problem, but maybe I'm not as dumb as I think I am, hah!
It sounds like he could have some kind of metabolism or health problem. Cats that get really fat usually do and it's not discovered often until the end in my experience. I've rescued so many animals so I have more experience than most with cats. One thing you could try is senior formulas (lower calories but nutritionally balanced for that age) of your dry food brand. We use Wellness Brand for dry and most cat food and we do use the senior formula for dry now as they all got a bit of middle age spread last year (still not fat though) and it's kept their weight steady. For treats they get bits of unseasoned organic human foods that are healthy for them (I eat organically), like turkey, chicken, (the bits that are left on the bone after carving I pick off for them) the drippings with fat removed, and some leafy greens they love, like spinach and lettuce (any slightly damaged parts I cut out of what we're eating that are not too damaged for them). One cat loves popcorn and I don't eat it with that artificial butter flavor so it's safe for him to enjoy too.
I've never had friends just in my age group or even generation. They range from 20s to 90s at present and that's pretty typical for my entire life.
Unlike me, he grew up in houses and often worked on them with his dad, so he knew how to take care of one when we did buy one. I've learned some over the years but physical disability has made it hard for me to reach a lot of stuff. Good for you for learning how to take care of your own; the more skills you have (and the more time to use them), the less you have to hire others to do. It kind of amazes me at times how many homeowners know nothing of even the very basics and are posting for help on routine stuff all the time on places like Nextdoor.
We're taking him to the vet in a few months for a routine check up so we'll ask the vet what is the ideal amount of food for him! Currently he gets 1/5 cup three times a day. I didn't realize there was a senior cat food formula! I'll have to look into that. We get his cat food from Costco and he loves it, as far as we can tell. I also give him safe scraps - whenever I make chicken, I'll cut out a tiny portion for him that's not seasoned. Sometimes if it's seasoned I'll rinse it off, but he doesn't seem to mind the seasoning too much, hah! He's not a vegetable cat though.
Since we have 7 cats who share plates, we can't exactly proportion exactly but find the optimine (I defeated spell check on that word, sorry rofl ) balance that works for all. It means allowing them to choose somewhat and each cat is different in how they choose. 1 prefers only dry; 2 prefer mostly wet and the rest an even mix. Only one has a weight problem and he eats less than the others do. Does your cat have access to plants outside? Most entirely indoor cats will raid indoor plants and outdoor cats will eat grass and other plants. It could be your cat does not have access to plants. If you can get some wild pesticide free grass from outside and bring it in, your cat will love it if he's fully an indoor one. Plus there are grass seeds that are sold to grow as indoor plants for cats. Mine are fully indoors. They do get some grass (burmuda) in season (a weed that took over our yard and neighborhood years ago that I finally found a use for!) that they love, but they also like spinach and lettuce. Before we figured it out, they ate all my house plants, even those hanging 6 feet above the ground! eek
Haha I've been using a spray called Bitter Yuck, but it only works for a few hours before my cat attacks my plants again. How would I bring in grass? Like have a little plot of grass in a box? I don't think my cat has put his paws on grass before but I don't think he'd want to - he's super prissy rofl
