Is Breakfast Cereal a Soup?
NO. Cereal is cereal. Soup: "a liquid food made by boiling or simmering meat, fish, or vegetables with various added ingredients." -Dictionary.com. Cereal does not have meat, fish, or vegetables. There are very few soups that are served cold. Do you eat your Rice Krispies in chicken broth? Do you put your beef and vegetables in milk? No. And if you do, you are weird. Saying that cereal is a soup is like calling a hotdog a sandwich. (Don't make me create that debate topic.)
See "full definition" section, for reference.
While I appreciate that for many, the whole point of soup is comfort food, and that the "comfort zone" is full of familiarity, the soup category absolutely ought to include cereal!
Let's break it down for both hot and cold varieties of cereal...
Definition 1: a liquid food especially with a meat, fish, or vegetable stock as a base and often containing pieces of solid food
hot cereal? ok, so plain old porridge (e.g. cream of wheat) is kind of a toss-up here, but if you just dump in the wheat and don't stir, it could definitely be in the running!
cold cereal? actually, cold cereal fits this even better. just swap the idea of stock for a fat-free roux, and you've got cream of wheaties! (soothing blandness - YES!)
IT GETS BETTER, THOUGH!
Definition 2: something (as a heavy fog or nitroglycerine) having or suggesting the consistency or nutrient qualities of soup
hot cereal? In my family, soupy stews are totally a thing and oatmeal is no exception! Cook the oats slightly less time than recommended, throw in salt/sugar/fruit to taste... BAM. Breakfast soup!
cold cereal? The enriched flour in many commercial cereals today makes their nutritional value fall somewhere between 3 minute ramen from the microwave, and soup from scratch... but unless you're a trained mycologist, cream of wheaties might be a better idea than cream of mushroom.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
Definition 3: an unfortunate predicament <that stunt landed her in the soup>
hot cereal? cook a little longer than intended, then grab without potholders.
cold cereal? skip the milk, and cook it in the microwave.
CONCLUSION: Anything can be soup. Especially if you refuse to limit yourself and expect it to be edible, tangible, and/or desirable.
