Dankin

The alluring aroma of the glazed donuts tickled Cor's senses before said treats were brought over by Dankin. He was just about to reach into his shirt pocket for his coin pouch when Dankin mentioned that these were on-the-house. Caught by surprise by the generous offer, the relief starting to lift off his shoulders was evident upon the friendly greeting. "Going to take a lot more to keep me down," Cor nodded and briefly replied with a smirk on the corner of his lips in thanks. Perhaps once things slow down enough to get in more than a few words and properly thank the cafe' owner.

Taking this cue as a means of telling him to relax for a bit, the brunette soldier causally began to tare one of the donuts into smaller bite size pieces. Attempting to not scoof down the first donut right away he paced his nibbling to a settled eating speed. Plus he wanted to save the second one for Luna... Speaking of which, where did that ball of fluff run off to now?

Cara ver Hold

Silently curious to know what it was her brother did for work, Cor decided that maybe some things were best left unspoken (unless otherwise noted). Without realizing he found himself drawn into the violet hues of Cara's eyes and the sincerity behind her gaze. The softened look of her beaming smile brought out another light blush across his cheeks. "If you ever need a hand getting out of trouble..." Well thought out words drifted into mere breaths in mid sentence. Perfect timing as Cara conversed with other customers, the brunette soldier could pause to take a deep breath and regain what was lefty of his composure. Thank gods for the donut in his hand that he could continue to nibble in the meantime.

Arashisora

Upon Ara entering the cafe' the brunette soldier noticed her wearing a sweater in this forsaken heat. He was lightly feeling the heat under the layers he wore, never mind something as confining as a sweater. Seeing Dankin give her what appeared to be a cool drink eased his concerns for Ara's well being. Surrounding conversations within the cafe' became blurred background noise in the back of his mind as he continued to snack on his glazed donut. What seemed like an eternity later Cor finally settled in to lean back and stretch out as if reclining in the chair to which he plopped his butt on.

Mademoiselle Alvinette

The instant Natalie attempted to pick Luna up the outlaw pup melted into her hands. Seconds later she settled onto the girl's lap with whimpers for affection and blissfully leaning into all the pets / scratches. Playful yips in agreement she wasn't in any hurry to return to her master's side just yet. For now she remained settled in Natalie's lap, unfazed by the conversation between Natalie, Cara and Ara (?).

Natalie didn't mind Cara and Ara sitting with her at all; she was happy to be making new friends and enjoying their company over donuts for a while! And in the meantime, she was just happy to be listening in as she snuggled Luna in her lap and munched on her donut and sipped her mocha. Luna was very soft and fluffy, and every bit as friendly and affectionate as Bogey. And Natalie was learning some interesting things about her table companions. Cara was from another world but could access this one through a portal that led to the ladies' room here. But like with a lot of interdimensional travel (including the kind Natalie herself had been through), timelines weren't always in sync, so one day here meant a whole week away from home for Cara. And Cara's town was suffering from a poor economy, so they needed all the money she could earn. But Cara seemed really stoked about working at a sushi bar.

"I might have to come see ya sometime too!" Natalie commented, beaming. "I haven't had sushi in so long, so it'll be a special treat!"

Meanwhile, the joint was really jumpin' today! There was another customer now, a curly-haired lady with an enviable hand-eye coordination, and Dankin and Mana were doing their best to keep up with all the customers at once.
Mana Quinne

As Dankin returned to the counter after having served the young brown-haired soldier, he caught a glimpse of a new customer arriving.

As she slowly made her way deeper into the café, she threw a small ball of paper at the nearby waste basket.

A direct hit. Right on target.

Dankin gave an impressed whistle before waving the new customer over to the counter.

"What'll it be, dead-eye?" wink , Dankin asked playfully.

It was a lot of lost time, but Cara was determined to make it work. Even if her siblings didn’t like it. She gave Ara a subtle nod of agreement towards the lost time, before pausing in thought for a moment. “Oh…um…hmm…” She took a sip of her tea while she mulled things over for a bit. The Innsigli happened a little over a hundred and fifty years ago, her ancestor’s kids had a boost in profits when they opened up the brothel, the generation after that utilized those profits to pursue careers of their own, some of them away from the homestead. “History would say that that the city’s decline was probably due to the mines closing, but we really didn’t start seeing or realizing the decline itself until maybe thirty or forty years ago. My parents would probably be able to explain it better if they were still around,” she said with a slow shake of her head.

“A lot of what brought money into our city was the surrounding mines and was supplemented by the cattle ranches, and then my family and the posse would also bring in some money through bounty hunting. When the mines were closed to prevent anyone from accidentally digging into the mountain necropolis the posse sealed off, the city lost that resource and was reliant on the ranches. That’s also about the time when the highest paying offers for bounty hunting declined as well. They did good for a while, but a lot of their kids aspired to become something other than a rancher or hunter, and when they left, so did the extra income from their chosen careers."

Cara would glance back towards Cor at the mention of needing a hand getting out of trouble. She smiled humbly towards the offer, though for now, she wasn’t sure how well that work out. She didn’t expect to find the trouble she was used to back home here, even though it seemed to be in abundance here from what she overheard. “I’ll keep that in mind,” she murmured back. There were still questions on her mind about Cor, but it would seem that for now, they would only be able to exchange the occasional glances and quiet sentiments. Getting to know some of the regulars among the hustle and bustle would prove to be a bit difficult.

Looking back towards Natalie as she spoke up about not having sushi in a while, Cara’s face would be beaming with a brilliant grin once again. “That would be great! Ando, the owner, has been practicing his craft since he was a young boy. He said his father taught him everything he knows, and their offerings are fresh, never frozen,” she explained with a sense of excitement in her voice. “I got to sample his work when I started, and I’ve never tasted anything like it at home!” Though, she really didn’t live anywhere near the ocean in her homeworld, so eating sushi was considered a rare treat.

Shaking off her thoughts before looking towards the counter, she was surprised at a lot of eyes pointed her direction. She softly chuckled at the remark by what appeared to be the worker of the establishment before deciding to move closer towards him.

"Thanks.. What kind of drinks do you have here?" She asked as she found her way onto a stool. She tossed her long and wavy navy blue hair behind her shoulders as she anchored an elbow to the counter to rest her chin on.

"I found some sort of ad about this place in my mailbox recently. Thought I'd check it out and see what you had going on." She remarked with a thin smirk.

((Haha. Well I'm excited to join in and hang out with you guys!))

She looked up and a small hint of red covered her cheeks before nodding bashfully.

"Oh! O-Of course! Sorry to ask a silly question like that." She stammered before looking across the board for a long moment. She chuckled at the mention of Gambino on one of the coffee names before her gaze followed through to the end of the list. What I even in the mood for? I suppose something to chill out my nerves would be best.. She thought as her face betrayed them for a moment with a quick side-eye movement.

"Yes. Well.. can't hurt to start with a chamomile tea."

Dankin tried to comfort his now-embarrassed customer.

"Hey, don't sweat it!", Dankin said. "We all have moments like that. One Chamomile tea, coming up!"

Dankin quickly prepared a cup and saucer before filling it with hot water and finally adding a fresh bag of chamomile tea to the brew.

He carefully lifted the cup and saucer from his work station and presented it to his customer.

"That's one plat, please," Dankin said warmly. "Feel free to sit wherever's available. Enjoy!" biggrin

As the new customer with the navy hair placed an order at the counter, Ara thought she caught a glimpse of the no-name soldier from before sparing a glance towards their table as he savored a doughnut. Had she spent too much time in her human form? Was that the reason behind the bizarrely distracting food fixations? Her iced-coffee seemed to help with the haze a little...

mouse65

To her relief, he appeared to be in better health now than on that earlier visit, when he'd staggered in past Ara's napping spot on the bench out-front with a fairly fresh battle wound. The absence of blood on the air was reassuring, although perhaps she had been in this form long enough to dull even that innate sense? She noticed Cara returning his glance with one of her own and grinned, looking back and forth between the two.

Ara wanted to call No-Name Charming over and pepper him with questions —more out of curiosity now, than suspicion. Did he still intend to make for the Shallow Seas, for example? There was no hurry, she reminded herself. With Luna so comfy on Natalie's lap, he probably wasn't going to leave without at least saying a proper goodbye.

"Shall we all go, then?" Ara asked, chewing on her lower lip. Fresh fish, unless it was from Bassken Lake, was certainly not found on the menu of most places in Barton. "Perhaps, for Cara's next shift?"

As tempting as the food was all on its own, Ara knew she would feel better camouflaged by her human form if she also had familiar human faces with her. Cara and Natalie were good company and they would help her pass in a venue that was equal parts tantalizing and terrifying for a sea monster. Oceans were like that, though —plenty to eat also meant plenty around to eat you! It had been some time since Ara had found herself at the bottom of the chain but, still...

It would be better, Ara thought, if they could go at night, so as to avoid the glaring Solstice sun...

Was it Natalie's imagination, or did Ara seem a little bit less than enthused about visiting Cara's workplace even though she was brightly suggesting that they go together? Natalie noticed the way her friend was chewing on her lower lip. And judging by how Ara had behaved the other times Natalie had seen her here, she didn't think it was social anxiety. After all, it was always busy here when Natalie came in, but Ara seemed fine. Hm. Maybe it was something about the fact that it was a sushi restaurant. Which set the wheels in Natalie's brain turning as she thought about the other things she'd heard Ara say. She seemed to have a lot of knowledge of the ocean and its creatures and had also seemed pretty darn uncomfortable when the tattooed hunter fella wanted to go hunt himself a kraken, even though she had hidden the discomfort well. She couldn't draw any definite conclusions, but it did make Natalie curious.

However, Natalie wanted to go out on the town, and she did want to try out the sushi restaurant where Cara worked. And since Ara wanted to come along, the more the merrier! Natalie beamed. "Sounds like a plan to me!" she exclaimed. "We'll have to figure out a time to meet up!"

Meanwhile, Luna was still happily snuggled up in Natalie's lap, and Natalie kept petting the wolf pup and rubbing her ears. Bogey loved it when mommy rubbed his ears!

Cara had caught the shifting glances that Ara was giving between her and Cor, causing one of her dark eyebrows to quirk up from beneath her bangs. But once she suggested that Ara and Natalie go to see the server in action at her new job, Cara snickered some at the idea before glancing towards the sleuth as she agreed. With a grin and a chortle, she gave them both a nod. “Well, I have it worked out to be there every other day, so I don’t miss out on too much of what’s going on back home. Aside from that, I’ll leave the rest of your planning between you two,” she said before finishing her tea and standing up to clear the table of any dishes, be it just her own if not her companions’ as well.

While Dankin was busy tending to his most recent customer, Cara would sneak her way into the kitchen to at least set the dishes in the sink for either him or Mana to wash. She would then sneak her way out and find her way back to Cor, tapping him on his shoulder. “Ok, so I feel that we should at least formally introduce ourselves before I head back on home, ya know? It’d be nice to know the name of the man who offered me his assistance the next time I find myself in trouble again. My name is Cara. Cara ver Hold. And you are…?” She paused for a moment to wait for his answer at least before asking, “I am also curious about your eyes. Are they hereditary?”

Vii didn't get out much, preferring the solace and safety of home; but every now and then, the adventure bug would bite, prompting her to hit the town to watch the people and spend money she didn't have.

She rounded the corner of one of Barton's main streets and was greeted by a lovely, familiar smell; the fuel of the gods. The most fragrant of beans.

Coffee.

Strangely enough, she couldn't recall ever seeing the café there before.

"Must be new," she mused. "Well I could use the pick-me-up."

A tiny bell rang as she opened the door and stepped into the shop; Vii observed the shop's quaint interior as her eyes adjusted to the gentle lighting, Homey, timeless; modern and cozy, all at once.

The shopkeeper catches her gaze and smiles as she approaches the counter slowly, scanning the menu behind him. I should try something different today. She smiles and reciprocates the barista's greeting. "Hi there. I've never been here before. What's really popular?"
