From the Weyr and from the Bowl
Bronze and Brown and Blue and Green,
Rise the dragonmen of Pern,
Aloft, on wing, seen, then unseen.

Welcome to Echoes of Pern, yet another Dragonriders of Pern B/C. There have been many Pern shops in the B/C over the years, but many of the greats have petered out over time. With luck, this shop will provide entertainment, and a possible home, for all those lost dragon riders out there.

This shop is not RP Required for most things. That said, we are RP-Encouraged, as activity is what keeps the shop alive and active. If you want to Impress a baby dragon, you may need to put in some activity.

11-17-18 The aftermath of all the insanity that happened during the double clutch hatching. xXx

Riders of both Weyrs can still visit one another but they probably will need to do so on rest days and potentially outside the Weyr. Time to start visiting those Holds, or Coastal Beaches, eh?

There will be a hard stop on Searching Candidates for High Reaches Weyr. Western Weyr still Searches but will not be taking any Candidates from the High Reaches Weyr area. If you want someone from that are at Western they will just need to have been Searched before the throw down in High Reaches Weyr.

Don't worry--we'll work with your characters! This is all meant to be fun and NOT restrictive or awful or a punishment. If you've got a query, ask Uta or Cheri and we can see what can be done for maximum fun, minimum drama.

Current Turn: 3577

Thread First Returned: 3572.04.22
Shop Opened: 3573

It has been over a thousand Turns since the the end of the 9th Pass, and the world is currently in a great upheaval. Thread has only just returned, and it's arrival was not only a surprise, but a planet wide massacre. After going so long without Thread, the planet was caught off-guard and the majority were absolutely unprepared. The people of Pern are now scrambling to protect their lives and their families.

High Reaches Weyr has always been strict, militant, and absolutely dedicated to the old ways. They were once looked upon as fools and old relics of the past, hanging on to outdated fashions and ideas, while the rest of Pern moved on, but are now heralded as heroes. They were prepared when the Great Enemy returned, and now the majority of the planet looks to them to lead. What had once been a small and conservative old-fashioned Weyr is now crowded with dragonmen hoping to learn how to fight Thread and save the planet. Other Weyrs, having been abandoned, are now being filled with inexperienced riders, and they all look to High Reaches to lead them in to the new Pass. Benden Weyr might have been the world leader during the 9th Pass, but times have changed, and it is now High Reaches turn to shine. This Weyr is traditional, highly conservative in what it believes are the Old Traditions and quite strict. But it was this traditionalism that saved many in High Reaches territories, and those who once looked down at the Weyr, are now singing its praises. It is not an easy Weyr to live in, but it is the only Weyr that is well prepared.

Thousands of miles away, on the wild Western Continent, there is another Weyr struggling to survive. While many Weyrs are looking to High Reaches and the old ways to get through this new and deadly Pass, those of Western Weyr are paving their own path. They believe they have a better way of life, and while it is their duty to protect the Western Continent from Thread, they do not believe the shining hide of a dragon dictates who leads and who follows. Western Weyr is small, but the challenges they face are very real -- from having to import firestone from the North, to dealing with a rogue group of dragonriders unwilling to give up their land. Life in Western Weyr, and on the Western Continent as a whole, is wild and unruly. Those looking for a peaceful escape had best search elsewhere, but Western Weyr is always open to those looking for a better, or at least different, way of life.

Pern is in chaos right now as it tries to make sense of Thread's return. High Reaches Weyr and Western Weyr are both in need of Candidates, weyrfolk, dragonriders, and crafters to best be prepared to fight for the planet's future. Once prosperous Holds were decimated and entire family lines wiped out with that First Fall, and now greedy Lords are trying to bully their way into more power. Who will you fight for, and what path will your characters choose? While the future of Pern is uncertain, one thing remains true:

Dragonmen must fly when Threads are in the sky.

This is not an RP Required shop. However, for individuals who are interested in creating stories for their characters, or role-playing in this Pern setting, there are a variety of paths a character can take.

Dragonrider
These men and women are the defenders of Pern. They are known to be progressive, and the majority live with their dragons in select Weyrs throughout Pern. Their bond with their dragon is a soulbond -- the dragon cannot live without his or her rider, and a rider who loses their dragon will often suicide. Very few riders continue to live dragonless, and those that do are often considered half alive.

Dragons are loyal companions. They choose their riders at birth, and the mental connection allows both rider and dragon to communicate. They can speak to each other telepathically, share thoughts, feelings, and send emotions to one another. The rider knows when something is wrong with his dragon, just as a dragon knows when their rider is not right. While each can keep thoughts and feelings private, rarely is there reason to do so.

Dragonriders are looked on by the rest of Pern as something mythical and legendary. Some aspire and wish to become a dragonrider, while others look upon them with fear, or irritation. Some find them meddling and feel that the riders are entitled, arrogant, and thrive off the hardwork of non-riders. Regardless how the Pernese look at dragonriders, with the return of Thread, they need them now more than ever.

To Obtain:
To make a dragonrider in Echoes of Pern, you must first obtain art. Adult dragons can be obtained through customs, bribes, quests, events, giveaways, and flatsales.

Baby dragons can be obtained through Hachings, which are IC Events. To be eligible for a Hatching, one must first make an approved Candidate, and then sign them up for a particular clutch for consideration.

Candidate
Candidates are men and women who have been selected to stand for a Weyr's Hatching. These individuals are thought to have what it takes to make a good dragonrider, and will be eligible to see if a dragon hatchling Impresses to them. These individuals are anywhere from 14 to 26 Turns (or a little older) and stay at the Weyr until they either age out, or Impress. For some, these are children who were born at the Weyr. It is considered their right to stand to Impress, and so at Turn 14 they can choose to do so. For the rest of Pern, anyone hoping to be a Candidate must first be found on Search. Dragonriders periodically travel to various Holds and Halls, and if a dragon thinks someone has the right 'feel' to them, they will invite them back to the Weyr as a Candidate.

This is rare, and there are far more men and women on Pern who are never found on Search than those that are.

To Obtain:
Anyone may make as many Candidates as they like! They will either be stationed at Western Weyr or High Reaches Weyr, and will only be able to sign up for clutches at their stationed Weyr. There is no limit to the amount of Candidates someone makes, but not every Candidate is guaranteed to Impress. So it may take a few Hatchings for them to find their lifemate, or they might never find one. If a Candidate fails to Impress before they reach their Weyr's age-limit, or they quit, or are kicked out, then they will have to find a new, non-rider path.

Crafter
Crafters are non-riders that have studied officially at a Hall. These men and women come in three ranks -- Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master -- and make their Craft their livelihood. Each Crafter goes through extensive studies, and ultimately finds their specialization and calling. Some men and women are naturally gifted in a particular craft, while others might need to hop from craft-to-craft in an attempt to find their skill.

Crafters make up a good portion of the Pernese population. They tend to travel all around Pern, and can be assigned by their Hall to a certain area, or request permission to travel to a desired area to further study or promote their trade. While they may not have dragons, crafters can be hugely influential, and some of them have changed the course of history on Pern.

To Obtain:
Anyone may make as many Crafters as they like. These individuals can be stationed the Major and Minor Holds surrounding Western and High Reaches Weyr, or in other territories as the shop expands. These individuals have no art requirement, and can be immediately played once they are approved.

Apprentice and Journeymen can be made without limit. Masters will require to have a certain age. Apprentice and Journeymen can be made into Candidates provided they are within the Weyr's age limits for Candidacy.

Wherhandlers require wher art to be created.

Dolphineers and Feline Handlers can be created without art.

Holders & Holdfolk
Holders and their people tend to make up the majority of Pern. Holds come in three sizes on Pern: Major, Minor, and Cothold. These Holds are all run by a ruling family. Major Holds are run by a Lord Holder; minor Holds are run by a Holder; and cotholds are simply run by one family line. The majority of Pern's population live in the Holds.

Some might be lucky enough to be the son, daughter,or love-interest of a Holder. Others might be nothing more than unedcuated drudges or workers just trying to get by. While it is a Holder's duty to educate their people, and give the a secure place to thrive, each Hold is run in its own unique fashion, and not everybody is given such security. depending on the Hold, some might find their lives better or worse off.

There is great variety in the Holds of Pern. Some will be found on Search and taken to the Weyr for a new lease on life; others might be accepted into a Hall to begn their trade. Others are simply cogs in the machine, trying their best to earn an odd mark, hoping for their own happy ending.

To Obtain:
Anyone may make as many Minor Holder families, or general Holdfolk, as they like. The only restrictions are that nobody may make Major Holder families or relations unless they have won the right to do so in a shop event or contest. OTherwise, the sky is the limit.

Holdfolk make up the majority of Pern. Crafters are common, but not everybody gets accepted into a Hall or has the means to make it to one. Not every Holder or Lord Holder is kind to their people, and most of Pern tries to keep itself out of a Holders politics. The Holdfolk are why the dragonriders do what they do and risk their lives by fighting Thread. Pern wouldn't be Pern without the men, women, and children that give it shape, and create its future. Holdfolk come in all sorts of sizes, personalities, histories, and backgrounds -- they are the true flavor text of Pern.

Holdless, Exiled, and Traders
Last but not least, there are some men and women who have either committed such crimes or trouble that they have been cast out of the Hold and are dubbed Holdless. This is a difficult position to be in for the Holdless. This means their families are exposed to Thread, and remember, not every strand of Thread is caught by dragonriders. Without having shelter, these individuals are at high risk of getting killed during Fall, and must survive the harshest of climates and weather without a secure place to be. It is not an easy life to live, especially as very few Holds will take a man who is marked as Holdless.

For men and women who truly commit atrocious crimes, they are sent to the Eastern Islands. These islands are essentially made up of little food, water, or shelter, and is considered a death sentence. No dragonriders cover the islands during Fall.

Not all Holdless were cast out due to crime or treachery. Some men and women move in great caravans as Traders. These traders are a colorful group, with their own culture, and their own reputation. They travel between the Holds, Halls, and Weyrs to trade goods and services for food, shelter during Fall, marks, and medicines. Some Holds have great relationships with the local Traders and Caravans, while others look upon them with suspicion.

To Obtain
Anyone may make as many traders, holdless, or exiled as they'd like! Just keep in mind that exiled individuals need to have a reason for escapng the Eastern Islands, and that they are wanted individuals. They will have to keep a low profile or suffer the consequences if found.

The below is average sizes for EoP dragons.

In Echoes of Pern we recognize six types of dragon colors: gold, bronze, brown, blue, green, and white. There is a large debate over whether dragons should be sized in feet (') or meters (m), but we have decided to compromise by having the dragons be approximately two feet per increment (or, as some shops call it, dragonfeet).

The books often reference cases where the dragons would be quite large, and we feel this is a compromise, marrying the debate between feet and meters. Originally, we had gone with feet, but over the years felt a little too small--particularly in the case of the smaller dragons. Remember, half of the length is made up by the neck and tail! We also had extended the size of dragons, in some cases largely so, so there's more overlap with our dragons than is usually found in the books.

Here we find the current shop measurements. The average and most common sizes are noted first, with the absolute smallest and largest on record noted beneath. No dragon can be sized over or under the shop maximum and minimum.

The Original sizes in parenthesis mark the numerical measurement we used which can be multiplied by one, tow, or three, which will dictate what you might find if using feet, dragonfeet, or meters.

Shout out out to Teiha and Prism Shine for creating a functioning grid on which to place dragons. :3

Please note that a dragon's wingspan is approximately 1.5 times the length of the dragon. Additionally, while dragons physically look similar, they were genetically engineered into creation. Whites, greens, and blues are built primarily for speed and agility. They were engineered purely for speed! Browns, bronzes, and golds were built for stamina. They are meant to last longer in the air. There's more to the dragon physiology than simply size, which is why blues simply cannot keep up with Queens, even if they're larger than some browns, who can.

Dragons are telepathic creatures who communicate mentally with their riders and other dragons. While they can speak to others outside of their rider, this tends to be quite rare, and a bit unusual. Dragons can also share their feelings with their rider, as well as know what their rider is feeling. So if ones dragon is hungry, chances are, their rider will feel that hunger as well until it is sated.

Dragons (and fire-lizards) eyes are multi-faceted, and tend to whirl with color or various colors. The faster the whirling, the more intense the feeling. Their eyes will whirl these colors, and this is what they mean:

Yellow: Anxiety, fear, confusion, alarm, worry
Green: Contentment, calmness, happiness
Blue: Happiness, joy, elation, delight
Purple: Lust, love, devotion
Orange: Irritation, annoying, aggravation, impatience
Red: Anger, wrath, rage, hostility
Grey: Illness, pain, sadness, grief, depression
White: Terror

Green and blue tend to be a good sign when dealing with dragons, firelizards, and whers. It is often said a newly hatched dragon's eyes will whirl rainbow upon Impression, and the exultation and bliss that comes from it. That is the only time such a color will display.

Dragons make a variety of noises: bugles, trumpets, roars, hums, croons, rumbles, growls, snarls, hisses, screeches, and snorts.

Green, blue, brown, and bronze dragons will be given out freely and maybe be obtained without limit. Greens and blues will be most common, followed by browns, and then bronzes, in terms of rarity. A player can have as many of these colors as they can manage to win or acquire.

White dragons are rare but not completely unheard of in Echoes of Pern. They are most common in Western Weyr due to different views on aiding eggs that can't hatch on their own. While an individual may win multiple white dragons, they cannot be obtained in customs, and will only be given out during Hatchings or a rare event.

Gold dragons are more common in Echoes of Pern, to accommodate every Gaian who would like to own one. In this shop, we would like to state that every person who wants a gold will get one -- it's just a matter of when and how involved an individual is in the shop. Some golds will have activity requirements, while others can be more like sig candy.

These are the three ways to obtain a gold in Echoes of Pern.

Quote:

Hatchlings: If someone wishes to impress a gold during a Hatching, preference will be given to active members of the shop. While we base Impressions on the best-suited personality, we will likely look at active members characters first to see if there's a match that will work first. If none of our active players have a suitable Candidate, we will then look to the rest for the best fit. It is possible for inactive players to Impress gold hatchlings, depending on the personality, but we would prefer active baby golds to inactive ones.

Your best chance at Impressing a gold hatchling is to be active in the Discord, RP your characters (particularly any past hatchlings given to you), and continue to be part of the community!

Junior Weyrwomen & Adult Gold Transfers: These weyrwomen either come to the Weyrs as transfers, or are considered to have been at the Weyr the entire time, just quiet up until now. They have golds aged anywhere from 2 Turns to 60 Turns old. They are in the prime of their life, are able to clutch, and are experienced dragonriders. These older golds can come from any Weyr on Pern, and be stationed either permanently or temporarily at High Reaches or Western Weyr. These golds will be given out in events, contests, and quests. These golds have no real rank or power outside of being a junior weyrwoman/gold wingrider. Preference will be given to those who are active in the shop, but depending on the contest or giveaway, we might very well choose a new face or lurker.

Only active members with actively RPed golds will have the golds put on Clutch Rotation. For non-active members, their golds are mating flights and clutches are assumed to happen elsewhere and are NPCed.

Elder Golds: These weyrwomen will be older women, and their dragons older than 60 Turns. The majority of these golds have retired and are not expected to clutch again. They do not typically rise to mate and will not be put on active clutch duty. These golds are experienced, but no less important, as they've much wisdom to share with their young counterparts. These golds will be given away to anyone regardless of activity level. Their golds are considered barren, but for those who are active and write the character regularly in the shop, staff might consider allowing their gold an opportunity to have another Flight or two. These golds can be obtained via giveaways, events, and quests.

Obtainment

Dragon art is required before someone can make a rider. This art can be obtained in the following ways:

  • Games & Staff Giveaways: These can happen either in the main thread or in the guild. Sometimes these are surprise giveaways meant to reward lurkers or individuals hanging about in the thread; othertimes these are announced ahead of time, or run for a few days, to give people a shot to enter.

  • Customs Staff will periodically open up full- or semi-custom threads. Winners will be rolled and their dream dragons created.

  • RP & Personality Contests: These events are judged contests usually for premade or semi-custom dragons. They require players to consider the personality and history of a rider and/or dragon.

  • Hatchings: Masterharper's personal favorite way to give out dragons is to run Hatchings. These events require players to create staff-approved Candidates and sign them up for their Weyrs clutches. Staff will then secretly match the baby dragons to the best suited Candidate, and will role-play out the Impressions during the official Hatching. Players get no say in what color of dragon they Impress -- it is 100% staff's decision.

  • Questing: Questing is a good way to get dream dragons. Not only is it a good place to store future character ideas and wish lists but Staff can go through and grant individuals their dream dragons anytime. These are considered free semi-customs.

  • Approximate Growth Dates When you Impress a hatchling, growths happen every six months. So you go from Hatchling/Junior Weyrling to Senior Weyrling stage, and then in another six month, from Senior Weyrling to Adult. We will be focusing on the IRL month they hatch/grow, unless Uta or Cheri note an exception.

If they hatch or grow in....
January ---- Their next stage will drop in July
February ---- Their next stage will drop in August
March ---- Their next stage will drop in September
April ---- Their next stage will drop in October
May ---- Their next stage will drop in November
June ---- Their next stage will drop in December
July ---- Their next stage will drop in January
August ---- Their next stage will drop in February
September ---- Their next stage will drop in March
October ---- Their next stage will drop in April
November ---- Their next stage will drop in May
December ---- Their next stage will drop in June

Firelizards are one of Pern's most coveted companion species. In the wild they are found primarily in the tropics, where they lay their clutches on the beaches of the coast. Given their popularity as pets, domestic firelizard's are common anywhere the Pernese have settled.

In Echoes of Pern the shop recognizes five colors of firelizards: Gold, bronze, brown, green, and blue. Whites are never hatched.

Firelizard's Impress to men and women of all ages and backgrounds. These small creatures make loyal companions to their bonded, and have a variety of personalities and varying intelligence. They are similar to dragons in some respects, but quite different in others. They can be trained, and the smartest of them can even be taught more complicated commands and orders.

In Echoes of Pern, eggs are sold and given away by the everyday Pernese regularly. Some make their livelihood breeding firelizards, others have them trained to hunt small game, or guard specific things, while others keep them solely as pets.

For further information about firelizards, please see our guide in the guild.

Firelizard Rules
  • Players may obtain an unlimited number of firelizards in all colors.
  • Characters may Impress as many firelizards as they can effectively care for and handle, but may only Impress one gold.
  • Gold and green-firelizards both produce clutches upon maturity.
  • All flights and resultant clutches are to be assumed/NPCd unless a player wins a Breeding Raffle.
  • Breeding Raffles cost 500 million gold.
  • Firelizard clutch sizes will be randomized by staff. Once designed, eggs will be dropped off in the Main Thread for pickup.
  • Firelizard clutch sizes range from 4 to 12 eggs.
  • Only golds have the very rare opportunity to produce another gold egg.
  • If your Gold or Green has bred in the past 3 months, she may not enter other raffles!
  • Golds breed with bronzes and browns. Greens breed with blues, browns, and bronzes.
  • Players of the breeding pair can keep up two eggs from the clutch. Any remaining eggs need to be given freely away to other players.
  • Firelizards can be hung onto solely as sig candy or for as long as a player needs to create a character to home them to ICly.
  • Remember, ICly firelizards must Impress to a character to bond with it. This requires a character to feed them upon hatching. This does not have to happen as an actual role-place, and can be assumed to have happened. OOCly you must have a flit bonded to someone to get certed. This doesn't have to be someone who is currently created, or ever created. But they must have a name, as we do not cert wild flits.
  • Firelizards do not speak, but they can whistle, churr, purr, hum, squawk, shriek, hiss, and give little bugles. They also can send pictures or images telepathically to their bonded, as well as share in their feelings.

While the shop is not RP required, we definitely have a world set up for individuals to better get involved with their characters. Echoes of Pern focuses on two areas: the conservative and far more traditional High Reaches Weyr in the Northern Continent and the more laid back and progressive Western Weyr in the Western Continent. While the focus will likely be the daily-happenings at the Weyr, the entire planet is technically open for exploration.

Major Holds are all NPC'd and will be loosely fleshed out by Staff. The Major Holds in Western and High Reaches territory will be the priority, but we will slowly open up the rest of the planet as we have time to do so. Minor Holds will be a mix of staff-claimed Holds that we'll flesh out, but anyone who wants to make their own minor Hold in a certain territory can do so. Those are freely available to create, provide they are beholden to a particular Major Hold.

Holdless, exiled, and traveling caravans are all available to be freely made. The same goes with Crafters and minor Crafthalls.

While Echoes of Pern will have restrictions on certain ranks of characters, we will do our best to work with you so you can make characters that are interesting and fun to write. Remember, while we might focus on dragonriders and the Weyrs, the neighboring Holds and Halls have their own amount of intrigue and drama. The perk of non-riders are that the majority don't need to have art, so can be created anytime!

If you are unsure of what Holds, Halls, Territories, and Crafts are available to be made, feel free to PM Uta and details can be worked out.

Once you have an approved character, you may then start an RP in the appropriate sub-forum.

This shop's focus is less crazy world drama or politics, and more about the day-to-day happenings. While we will supply fun world plot and drama from time to time, it's really up to individuals to make their own fun, heartache, and romance.

Pern is a large world, and while we try to mostly follow canon, we do have a few deviations from the book. Here are some deviations and shop stances.

Timeline: In this shop, one day IRL = approximately one day in-game. Every New Year is Turn's End andevery New Year's Day isTurn's Beginning. While folks can backdate RPs, you shouldn't have your characters jumping too far ahead in the time line as surprise! meta could happen at any time.

Weyrling Training: In Echoes of Pern we'll be squishing two years of training down to 12 months. Junior Weyrlings are from month 0 to month 6. Senior weyrlings are from month 6 to graduation at 12 months. Art will ideally accompany the growths.

They begin learning flight at around month 5, and how to go Between around month 7. At 6 months they are assigned to their own weyrs -- unless some development warrants an individual stay in the Barracks i.e. injury, discipline, or struggling with flight.

Greens will begin to rise around month 8, with the rest of the chromatics following suit as the dragon matures. Bronzes tend not to chase until around 10-11 months, and golds at 12 months.

Timing It: While dragonriders seem to know that jumping Between times has happened in the past, it is still very dangerous and frowned upon. Players are not allowed to jump to different times.

Flight Lust: This can be fought, if a player does not wish their character to get wrapped up in the moment. The rider will simply experience moodiness, irritability, and possibly a headache from fighting such feelings.

IC Action/Response =/= OOC Action/Response: If character fight ICly it does not mean that you are now on the outs with the other player. Please try to keep these two things separated. Drama is meant to happen in this shop, but it should not be taken out on individuals OOCly. This shop is supposed to be fun, and while characters might not get along, there is hope that players don't take ICly happenings personally.

Dragon Intelligence: In the books it seemed that greens, blues, and browns were considered less intelligent than golds and bronzes. We're scrapping that in this shop. While there might be some dragons that aren't the brightest crayons in the box, their intelligence and attitudes are a bit more developed here in Echoes of Pern and absolutely have nothing to do with colors.

Harming Others: In the books, dragons would never harm another person (aside from pre-Impression Hatchings) and in some cases, a dragon would suicide out of shame if their rider harmed another. This isn't the case in Echoes of Pern. While dragons will still not intentionally harm or attack humans, their riders may not have any issue with it, and their dragon might not try to stop them or care. Dragons might also do things at their riders behest that inadvertently cause harm, such as flaming down a building, or dropping boulders from the air.

General Rules

  • Follow Gaia TOS in the main thread and in the guild.
  • Keep drama to a minimum.
  • Don't harass staff or players for any reason.
  • If you don't have anything nice to say to someone, don't say anything at all.
  • Staff get final say and judgment in any and all issues brought to them. You don't have to agree with their decision, but you must abide by it.
  • Mules are okay but try not to take gross advantage! There are a lot of reasons someone might make a new handle, so if you want a fresh start, you won't be judged or questioned. If we blacklist someone, that will go for all their known mules/handles. Additionally, we do try to ask you don't go mule crazy. If we know you're a mule and you're trying to obviously rig games, or it's a known mule from another shop, we might poke you.
  • There is no gold restriction. Players and Gaians may win multiple golds, though be aware some contests will be gold newbies only. Gold Hatchlings will be given out based on Candidate personalities and a players role-play activity within the shop.
  • No begging for pets.
  • No stealing.
  • Please make up your own cultures. Pern is a large planet and while bits and pieces of Terran culture might have been learned through AIVAS, we don't want folks appropriating those cultures here. Make up your own culture or style -- this is a fantasy world, after all.
  • Do not use copyrighted or franchised material to represent your characters. We're not a shop that uses play-bys, so please keep your character unique.
  • Good sportsmanship is encouraged.

RP Rules
To role-play in the shop you must make a character sheet and have it approved. Character Creation can be found in the guild.
  • 1 Day IRL = 1 Day in Pern. Echoes of Pern has a 1:1 time ratio.
  • All dragon names must end in -th. i.e. D'mon and his bronze Thistreth.
  • Dragon names must not be "cheating at Scrabble" names. While long names are appropriate, please ensure the name can be pronounced. If you're unsure on a name, PM Uta or Mr Cheri. While some Pern shops make incredibly complex names, we prefer ours to be a bit more canonical.
  • Male dragonriders tend to give themselves honorifics, by shortening their full name with an apostraphe. i.e. Salazar became S'zar after he Impressed.
  • Female dragonriders traditionally do not give themselves honorifics.
  • All wher names must be named after their handler and end in -sk. i.e Monal and his blue wher Monsk. The stronger the bond, the sooner the -sk appears. But please ensure there is at least one vowel present so it's pronouncable.
  • To have a character eligible for Hatchings you must make an approved Candidate.
  • Riders assigned to a Weyr or who Impress at one of the Weyrs must stay in the Weyr! They will not be allowed to leave just because they don't want to fight Thread.
  • Riders who are not affiliated with a Weyr will come with restrictions. The biggest is that they will not get to fight Thread.
  • The shop is not RP Required. However, we do encourage RP, and certain ranking characters might come with RP Requirements. Should someone win a ranking character and go inactive, then staff has the right to NPC the character until the player resumes activity.
  • To Impress a hatchling, activity is important. If you've won a hatchling (or hatchlings) and don't RP them then you risk not Impressing future hatchlings. You do not need to RP or write non-hatchling dragons and can collect them as you wish, but the amount of work that goes into writing Hatchlings means we would prefer they go to active players in the shop.
  • If you win a character that comes with a pre-designed personality, we ask you do not deviate from it when you RP. We understand how chracters might grow and change in time, but if you win a dragon that's meant to be negative and a downer, we would not expect to find it a bubbly ball of positive energy in your first role-play.
  • Staff have the right to ask you to make changes to a plot, a personality, or a role-play, for any reason. We won't ask arbitrarily but some things just might not work.
  • Nobody but Staff gets to write ranking NPCs. While a player can make a general NPC to color their writing or carry a story, only Staff are allowed to write or mention/plot the following: Weyrleaders and their Seconds, Wingleaders and their Seconds, Lord Holders and their family, Master Crafters (not to be confused with a general Craftmaster), or any one else of high rank an power. Staff will contest or give away ranking characters in events, but until they are owned by another player, they will be controlled by Staff.
  • For players that win ranking characters, they will come with an expectation of RP activity. Such activity will be made clear in the contest and the winner will be expected to follow through with the commitment.
  • Staff will control major world happenings and events. Should a player have a plot idea that will affect multiple parties, or be world changing, they must talk it out with Masterharper to get approval. Staff can deny the plot if it conflicts with the way the shop is being run, goes in a different direction, or simply doesn't make sense.

Remember, this shop is going for nice and easy day-to-day development, heartaches, and dramas of everyday life. Meta will happen, but likely at a slower pace than some Pern shops in the past. Any world shaking stuff will be run by Staff.

Candidate & Hatching Rules & Guidelines
  • Staff must approve all Candidates in the character approvals thread. If your candidate doesn't make sense or fit within the rules or setting, staff will ask you to change them.
  • Candidates must be between the ages 14 and 26 for High Reaches Weyr, or 14 and 30 for Western Weyr. We will allow Candidates at High Reaches Weyr to be up through 30 turns, but they will be treated as Stands Impression Only.
  • Candidates must have full possession of their limbs, clear vision and hearing, and be in general good health to be eligible. We understand limb-loss and loss of vision could happen as a result of fighting Thread, but they will not allow someone to stand for Impression if this has already come to pass.
  • Candidates need to be relatively stable and in good mental health. While problems, issues, and bad behavior is normal, a Candidate overwhelmed by trauma or who lacks empathy for others would not be eligible.
  • Staff decides who Impresses who in secret. Not every Candidate will walk away with a dragon as there will likely be more Candidates than Hatchlings.
  • No giving back a Hatchling, giving it away, or opting out. If you signed up a Candidate for a clutch, you cannot change your mind if you don't like the Hatchling that you Impress.
  • Complaining about the color of your dragon or disappointment in your win could get you greylisted from participating in Hatchings, or blacklisted from the shop if it's bad enough. The same goes with tearing others down or being negative.
  • In Echoes of Pern we crunch Weyrling Training down from two turns down to about one.
  • It takes approximately one year for a Hatching to grow and all three stage of art to be delivered. We will deliver the growths in the main-Thread for pickup.
Hatchling/Junior Weyrling to Senior Weyrling = Six Months
Senior Weyrling to Adult/Graduation = Six Months

  • In Echoes of Pern, we follow these guidelines when it comes to matching hatchlings to Candidates.
Golds: Impress only to women or trans-women of any sexual preference.
Bronzes: Impress only to men or trans-men of any sexual preference.
Browns: Impress to men or women of any sexual preference.
Blues: Impress to men or women of any sexual preference.
Greens: Impress to men or women of any sexual preference.
Whites: Impress to men or women of any sexual preference. Whites can be hatched as either male or female.

In more traditional Weyrs, the hatchlings seem to pick based on more traditional beliefs (golds/bronzes choosing only straight men or women, respectively, no women on browns, and women rarer on blues), but every now and then a brave little deviant has a mind of his or her own.

Hatchlings are always matched based on character personality. This means some hatchlings might go to inactive players, and some might go to regulars. It just depends on the personalities and who is matched best.

Gold Dragon Command Rules
Gold dragons are powerful creatures. They have the ability to command other dragons, and those dragons must obey. In Echoes of Pern, we have rules concerning this command use, and it is an ability the shop can revoke from a gold writer who breaks it.

First thing to know is that there is a heirarchy. The Weyrwomen of Pern -- meaning the senior most gold in a Weyr -- has the most powerful golds on Pern. They can command any dragon (including their junior golds) associated to their Weyrs, any dragon (including golds) who are not affiliated to any Weyr, and can command foreign Weyrs dragons (including golds) provided the senior Queen of that Weyr allows it / doesn't bother stopping it.

For example, Eveleth of High Reaches could command any dragon she wished. Should she try to command a dragon at Western Weyr, Sheyoth could stop her with a command her own. Think of it is as a home-base advantage. If the gold isn't from the area or affiliated with the Weyr, then her command power can be stopped by another gold who is from the area and has an equivalent rank. This keeps golds from coming in and just taking over Weyrs that aren't their own or non-Weyr queens from ganging up and bullying their way. As almost all of Pern is associated with some Weyr, it means their power is limited.

Golds are very protective of their Weyrs. Just as gold firelizards don't like other queens hanging around, the same instinct is in the gold dragons. There's more wiggle room -- obviously the queens can get along with one another to work together and only seem to get aggressive when they rise to mate -- but not every gold likes foreign queens on their turf.

Golds who are not affiliated with a Weyr are the lowest ranking queens. While they can still command dragons, their command ability can be trumped by even a junior Weyr associated gold.

Senior Queens / Weyrwomen
Junior Queen / Gold Wingriders
Non-Weyr Goldriders
Gold Weyrlings

All that said, this power shouldn't be used willy-nilly. There's a difference between a gold being bossy and a gold who purposefully forces the command on a fellow wingmate. Should a goldrider wish to use the ability, please keep the following rules in mind.

  • This command ability should be used sparingly. Even in the books a gold rarely used such power on others. Just because they tell someone to do something doesn't mean they're commanding that dragon using their power.
  • Should you wish to use the power, make sure that you have fellow players consent. Should someone spring their gold on you and command your dragon to do something without your permission, you may ignore it and let Masterharper or Fated Fable know.
  • Should a gold player have permission to use it, make sure the command makes sense, and know it only affected dragons who are of lesser rank. The command isn't permanent -- it will fade with time, depending on the force behind it. Dragons aren't known to have long memories in the book, and while that's not true in our Pern, we'll keep it so that a command can't last more than 12 hours.
  • Commands also shouldn't be used to get individuals in trouble. If a goldrider's queen was to command a wingrider to do something in direct violation to the Wingleader's orders, you can bet that gold rider would get in serious trouble from the Weyrwoman. Don't do it. Golds that are irresponsible with their command ability will have it taken away by the shop.
  • Yes, that's right. In Echoes of Pern there are rumors that some golds have lost their ability to command dragons. So far this is nothing but rumor, so OOCly let's keep it that way.
  • There may be some metaplot where queens are encouraged to use their command ability on certain targets and in certain RPs. The shop will make it clear when this is allowed and appropriate.
  • Lastly, when you are using your golds command ability, please somehow make it known that it's in use. State it in the tag, bold the command, do something to stress it and have it stand out from her regular/non-command conversation.

We have a 0-tolerance policy concerning abuse of this power. Gold writers get one shot and one shot alone on using the ability. If you abuse it, you lose it. Should someone own multiple golds and lose the ability for one queen, they will lose it for ALL their golds, past and future owned.
