LOL I JUST PRICED SOMEONE. *BRACES SELF*

For good art, people are willing to pay exorbitantly. 3nodding

      Check out my post history and back me up if you think I'm right LOL

      But it wasn't really good art.

Oh yeah, btw, I DID change the price setup in my shop a few minutes ago. All I did was make the traditional coloring and digital coloring price the same, and instead of a fixed group price, I made it 10k to the couple price for every extra character, limit to five.

Does that sound good? O.o;;;;

EDIT: XD I'll see you guys in the pricing forums, then. The other day, I saw a 2 MILLION suggestion for a rather mediocre picture. I was like 'WAIT, NO. NO NO.'

Ohsnap you should price me but I'm afraid of what you'd say. rofl

      XD No don't you dare, I work hard to discourage them from ever drawing again!

      I dunno, there are two prices I have. There's the "what I'd personally pay for it if I had the money" and the "maximum people will buy it for".

Starrii: I totally feel youuuuuu. When I was starting out in art school I tried SO HARD to delude myself into believing that my art wasn't really "anime" and that I should be taken seriously... then like, my sophomore/junior year I tried REALLY hard NOT to draw anime and it was so against the grain it didn't really work out..

Then, my senior year, I decided to just go with it sad my commercial/portfolio work is now something that I wouldn't consider visibly anime, but DEFINITELY anime influenced in a lot of ways (line weight, colors, etc) and I'm getting to be happier with it-- I don't want to get rid of my roots entirely, but I definitely want to be taken seriously as an illustrator some day down the road.

here's my portfolio (needs updating) u_U if anyone is interested in crappy gradients and even crappier realism, lulz

OTL That sounds... so much like what I think would happen if I go to art school. x__x;;

I think I'd pick up realism a little easier though. IDK. I've always loved realism a lot. But. Well.

Cartoon is actually something that I enjoy doodling in... All my "paint" art look rather cartoony at the start just because I know I don't have to *work* to get anime. x__x;; otlotlotl Cartoon is "fun" but at the end of the day I like end results in an anime style... Or maybe I just don't want to step out of my comfort zone. ):

sorry I'm babbling. I'm just so confused about my future atm. emo

Dju xD Fine, I won't go step in your territory LOL

xDD Omg... I never give people the "What I'd pay" price. I'm so picky and unless it's one of the few artists that I like, I wouldn't pay a cent for it. x__x;;

Also, on the subject of "swan like necks and chunky thighs"... It has to do with style originality too, doesn't it? And how much they worked on it. If the style is original and the work gone in it is pretty, then I don't think it's that much of a sin really. I just get really ticked off when very sub-par art in general get like, 5mil each piece. x__x;;
I just saw a Gurren Lagann Auction.

They're selling art as the characters, but the art has nothing to do with the theme! x.x;;;

When I think of a Gurren Lagann auction, I think of people selling art of the characters!

hmmmmm....

one of the biggest problems I notice with the pricing suggestions forum posters is that they all seem to be relatively new to drawing digitally-- or drawing at all.

the latter, I can't really help with, since that's only something that can be helped through observation and practice, but the first issue...

some tips I think people should tell them (or maybe I'll do a tutorial thread or something god. haha)

1. zoom is your friend. so is undo. If you don't have naturally clean lines, work big, size down-- the lines clean themselves if you do this properly.

2. oekaki should never be your medium of choice unless you WANT that pixel line look (Jael does it phenomenally, it CAN be done, just not how most of these people are doing it.)

3. get your hands on a copy of photoshop, paint tool sai, open canvas, painter, whatever free s**t there is out there today-- and a tablet. It will change your life, and your art.

4. composition-- first of all, don't bother with backgrounds if you can't even draw a figure yet-- they look bad on gaia's stark white bg anyway... just stick with figures, and for the love of god, don't cut them off right above the foot! Add more space to your canvas, or plan your image better sad

      I mean like "If I was a billionaire" sort of thing. I mean, I wouldn't say no to good art no matter who it's from yanno? XD

      And no, the 'style' excuse is soo out of fashion, anyone who claims that now is just covering for their complete and utter lack of knowledge on anatomy. Like a high paid artist I know--she recently drew a picture were the legs were like tree stumps pretty much and the upper body was all dainty and delicate. That's not a style, it's "I've no idea how to draw legs nicely".

Depends.

Maybe they're doing Eyecatch art?

Can you point me to the general direction of this thread?
yeah god I was so excited when I saw the GL auction thread but it's a little disappointing-- could have done so much with it sad

starrii: yeah, I mean... bottom line is this-- my anime art got better when I understood realism.. Just like my digital art got better once I understood how to paint traditionally. All knowledge is useful in one way or another smile Don't be afraid to venture out of your comfort zone, it's scary but when you come back to it, you'll be better wink

I sort of agree with dju-- observation first, then style. Once you know what something is SUPPOSED to look like, THEN you can stylize it. If you try to stylize it first, you're drawing it wrong 99% of the time sad Most people try to do this the opposite way...
Uuugh that just above the foot thing KILLS me. x.x; Maybe it's just me and my OCD, but I find it incredibly annoying when people can't expand their canvas a few more pixels to put in the feet.

thankyou maya ;A; I haven't had a chance to update it in a while with some commercial work, but alas.. haha

kuddles: yeah, I mean... I'd rather see a badly drawn foot than no foot at all. sad
