Aww, why'd you give them to the pet store?
I'd always be afraid to do that- I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the people that come in pet stores to buy birds (or any animal, really) usually aren't ones that do a lot of research and end up putting the finches in tiny cages or feeding them seed-only diets and similar unfortunate things.

They don't incubate their eggs until their clutch is complete/nearly complete. How often do they lay eggs? If it's an every day occurrence, you should consider letting them brood because laying so many eggs is draining and predisposes them to things such as egg binding.

Eh, it's fine that they don't eat pellets- feeding pellets is pretty much like feeding cheap dog food to your birds, in my opinion. I would never give my birds that junk.

I don't see why people make a big deal out of grit- I think the whole debate is rather stupid. You get these die-hard people who are all like "grit is BAD!"- then I ask them, "Do you give your birds a cuttlebone?" and more than likely it's yes. Well guess what, cuttlebone is grit- congrats!
Two types of grit. Insoluble and soluble. Insoluble can't be absorbed by the body. It's stuff like gravel, small stones, etc. Chickens, pigeons, and similar fowl require it- absolutely require it. If they aren't offered grit, they aren't as efficient when digesting and their seed isn't properly ground up. Useless for birds that hull their seeds, as insoluble grit provides no nutritional benefit, so I don't recommend it for those types of birds (as well as the fact it has the ability to cause impaction). Other type of grit is soluble. Soluble grit can't cause impactions or anything like those 'anti grit' people want you think. Why? Because the body absorbs it, digests it just like seed and an other food (and because of that, is also not a substitute for the insoluble grit required by galliforms and pigeons). Soluble grit is like cuttlebone, crushed eggshell and oyster shell, similar stuff. It provides valuable minerals, such as calcium- in fact, is the best way for a bird to get calcium, other than the calcium available in vegetables.
Most of the grit you buy in stores is insoluble grit, and therefore is useless and not good for a seed-hulling bird (finches, parrots, etc) to get. Best thing to do is mix your own.

As far as grit goes for myself, I make my own mixture with crushed eggshell, cuttlebone shavings, and one capsule of a coral shell calcium pill with vitamin D3 (it's intended for humans, but works fine with birds too as long as it's vitamin d3 and not d2). I grind it all up into the finest powder I can manage using a spoon, then sprinkle it on the top of eggfood or provide it in its own separate dish as in the case of my females.

How do you manage to give your birds nests without them breeding? Even in the middle of winter, with no nests or nesting material, my females insist on laying eggs and two of my boys will put ripped newspaper in their food dishes and try to 'nest'- despite the fact I still keep my sexes segregated.

Hi there! I saw on one of your posts you mentioned having Zebra finches. Mind telling me about them? Pictures, even?
I have six Zebs myself- four male, two female. As far as color mutations go, two of the males are CFW, and one of the females is fawn. It's cool finding another finch owner on here, especially with Zebras. How long have you had yours?
