Just some of my own notes on FF7 characters.
Damage rating: How much pain they dish out compared to the others. Magic: How good is their MP/Magic damage? Toughness: Ability to not get pwned, based on HP, Defense, and home row. Limit: How useful are they on average? Command bonus: Any yellow materia I've found they seem to do well with. Weapon notes: Notes on special weapon abilities and wacky weapons (ones with no materia slots and having a whimsical theme). Other notes: Stuff I found important. Overall: My rating for the character.
Personality rating: An independent rating of how interesting I found the character/how much I liked them. Separated out for the sake of trying to keep the overall rating as objective as possible.
Scale: 1-5, one being low (they get ganked in that area), five being high (no worries for that stat).
Cloud:
Damage rating: 5 Magic: 3 Toughness: 4 Limit: 5 Command bonus: Deathblow. Weapon notes: Yoshiyuki powers up when party members are K.O.ed, Ultima Weapon does damage based on Cloud's HP. Wacky weapon: Nail Bat. Other notes: Main character. Leaves the party once, leaving Tifa, then Cid to lead. Overall: 4. He's a good work horse and fits in any situation well.
Personality rating: 3. Lots of storyline, but not the most exciting guy.
Tifa:
Damage rating: 3 Magic: 4 Toughness: 3 Limit: 5 Command bonus: Steal Weapon notes: Powersoul powers up when Tifa's HP is low, Masterfist powers up as Tifa's statuses change, Premium Heart powers up as Tifa's limit bar fills. Wacky weapon: Work Glove. Other notes: Remember the song Cloud plays in his memory. Play it to get stuff throughout the game, limit included. Overall: 4. Does less damage than the others, but her limits make up for it nicely.
Personality rating: 4. Nice as heck, and plays a large emotional role.
Barret:
Damage rating: 4 Magic: 3 Toughness: 5 Limit: 3 Command bonus: none. Weapon notes: All long-ranged except Cannonball, Atomic Scissors, Chainsaw, Drill Arm, Rocket Punch, and Pile Banger. Missing Score powers up with increased AP of materia in its slots. Wacky weapon: Rocket Punch. Other notes: none. Overall: 3. He was okay in normal combat, but his lack of wowee limits was disappointing. Just doesn't dish out quite as much punishment.
Personality rating: 3. He drops the profanity and ebonics by the time you get Cid, but remains rather Mr. T in your memory.
Cait Sith:
Damage rating: 3 Magic: 4 Toughness: 5 Limit: 3 Command bonus: none. Weapon notes: HP Shout does more damage with higher HP. Wacky weapon: Trumpet Shell. Other notes: none. Overall: 4. Doesn't dish out as much physical pain as the others, but with a ton of HP and defense, so it's rare to see him dead if you have any means of healing.
Personality rating: 4. Often goofy and plays a significant role in Cloud's relationship with Aeris. Not my favorite, but at least interesting.
Aeris:
Damage rating: 2/5 Magic: 5/5 Toughness: 3/2 Limit: 3 Command bonus: none. Weapon notes: Guard Stick is the only initial equipment you can sell. Wacky weapon: Parasol. Other notes: Dies after the first disk. Despite many theories, she doesn't come back. You'll see her in the church if you treat her well, but she fades away when she sees you. You can steal her 5th best weapon from the chariot monsters in the Train Graveyard. It's all she'll need for ages. Overall: 3. Ignore all the guides you read about loading her down with materia and throwing her in the back row. I doubled up her ratings for a reason. The first number is her if you follow the guides. The second number is her in the front row if you bother to steal a Striking Staff in the train graveyard and put her up front. She'll do more damage than Cloud for quite some time and will remain a good fighter until just before she dies. One setback is that, try as I might, I could never get her past Breath of the Earth, but all you'll ever need for casual use is Healing Wind. If I could get her back, I'd 1.) die and go to Heaven, and 2.) see about getting her to some of those great upper limits that sound nicely leveled to later in the game.
Personality rating: 5. I love the way she uses her inherent cuteness and innocence to lighten things up. That and the fact that watching her death over again to show her sacrifice makes up for just seeing her get teh stabbers (which also has a lot of emotion).
Yuffie:
Damage rating: 2 Magic: 2 Toughness: 3 Limit: 3 Command bonus: Morph (with Conformer). Weapon notes: All long-ranged. Conformer does more damage with enemy level, no damage to allies, and has a Morph command bonus. Wacky weapon: Superball. Other notes: You'll have to do some work to get her. Search the forests near Junon for a Mysterious Ninja and kick her butt. She'll confront you after battle. Cater to her inflated ego and don't ask for her name for Yuffie to join you. If you mess up, don't worry. You can try again as many times as you like, but each goofed attempt will cause her to run off with some of your Gil. If you decide to skip it, you'll meet you near Wutai, and you can go through the Leviathan quest as per normal. Overall: 2. In battle, all you can look forward to is having her get a limit to use. And they aren't that great on their own. She basically does all of Cloud's limits, with less damage, except her Clear Tranquil, which seems to be an attempted replacement for Healing Wind when Aeris dies. I've tried to find some shining secret compensation, but I'm afraid she's just not that exciting, at least under normal use/training. Sorry.
Personality rating: 4. As rude, sneaky, and adolescent as she can be, it all serves to make her capers funny.
Red XIII:
Damage rating: 5 Magic: 4 Toughness: 4 Limit: 5 Command bonus: none. Weapon notes: Seraph Comb is unsellable. Hairpin is long-ranged. Limited Moon does increased damage with more MP. Wacky weapon: Hairpin. Other notes: Play the Fort Condor mini-game until you get the Magic Comb. It won't take long, and you can always sell it if you have better. Don't rush out to buy loads of headdresses on the first disk. You'll get his 5th best weapon, the Seraph Comb, after finding his petrified father, which will carry you far. Overall: 5. I was REALLY impressed with him. He's incredibly combat worthy, and his limits are leveled nicely to the area of the game you'll be using them in.
Personality rating: 5. He's deep, intelligent, and yet he still surprises you with the occasional childlike line. Very well-written.
Vincent:
Damage rating: 5 Magic: 5 Toughness: 5 Limit: 1-5 Command bonus: Manipulate. Weapon notes: All long-ranged. Death Penalty powers up as Vincent kills more enemies. Wacky weapon: Silver Rifle (really a squirt gun). Other notes: Another secret character, you'll need to do a bit extra to get him. Find the note just inside Shinra Mansion and solve the clues, fight the monster to get the key (and collect Odin). Open Vincent's coffin, talk to him until he mentions Lucretia, and leave. He'll change his mind about rotting in the basement and join you. Overall: 5. Very good in battle, but his limit is a blessing and a curse. You lose control of him and may end up healing your enemy if you're not careful. You also lose any magic/summons on him for the rest of the battle. He does get a new HP set, though.
Personality rating: 1. The most interesting bit you'll have with him is when you get him to join in this game. If this were about all the games, movies, etc., he'd get higher, but in the original title, he's about as interesting as vanilla ice cream on a white plate.
Cid:
Damage rating: 4 Magic: 3 Toughness: 4 Limit: 3 Command bonus: none. Weapon notes: Two ultimate weapons. Venus Gospel has the 8 linked slots and 97 attack, but Flayer has an attack of 100. Venus Gospel does more damage with more MP. Wacky weapon: Mop. Other notes: Leads party after Tifa opts to stay with Cloud. Overall: 3. His limits aren't the absolute best (more like decent to reliable), but he's a decent fighter, and can manage magic. If you have to choose between him and Tifa, go for him for attack or Tifa for magic. It's really a toss-up, but I just personally liked Tifa better.
Personality rating: 4. Serves to take over for Barret, who gradually cools down as you approach this area. Swears, rants, and raves constantly, and is always seen as "Old Man Cid," even though he's Barret's junior by three years. And I love him for it!
