Poems of the Froggy Queen
Caves
Beneath the fields of time, below the sedimentary rock and stalagmite covered ceilings of caves far below
There is a deep river that has flowed since long before we existed and will continue after
In this river little things float and change and move at every moment of every day
The current remains steady and strong, though carrying all through and to its end
Often I have walked atop of this place, but I have always known of its existence
When I fell into the ocean, I was swept into the caves beneath the land
In these tunnels I dreamed that the seaweeds were hands grasping at my feet, waives were deserved as they crashed down on me
All things in that darkness were things owed to me, badges of honor for all that I destroyed
The lights that I stomped out, the great things I burned
The ocean was the answer to my madness, and the tunnels beneath the surface were my cradle after I was born
Eventually this river below leads to a cave that stems into the earth
A labyrinth of tunnels, some staying beside the river and some stretching far up an down
The river grows shallow and the current slows, allowing one such as I to grasp at the stone ledges surrounding the water
For so long I lay in that darkness, reckless and wild as I beat against my prison
I crawled through the tunnels, as vermin ate away at my clothes and knots formed in my hair
All at once the caves flooded and darkness swallowed me whole
At the mercy of the cold water, I was pushed against walls, through twists and turns until, battered and bruised I emerged to the surface
I am pushed onto green hills, as water flies into the open air
Crystals against the sky
The water died down and I lay, soaked and in pain but laughing at the brilliant sunlight painting the clouds a thousand neon colors
When I closed my eyes, I heard the singing of an old song I used to know
It is part of my imagination, it must be, and yet it rings so clearly in my ears
I open my eyes and the road stretches out before me, across the hills to some place that is still a mystery to me
I know she is there, I know I must find her, but my own pain and weakness weigh me down
I raise myself and begin to move, despite the aches in me
Her song still rings in my soul, reminding me that I have a choice to sway towards whichever path I need
Still my feet move towards the sound of her voice
And so I wander on
