People who are remotely creative invent their own characters when playing.
They do not simply fixate on canon characters.

Is fanfiction that just evolves around canon characters worth a read? Nope.
Fanart evolving only around canon characters worth a look? No.
Because the creator isn't creative.
Expect such "creators" to just ride on copyright infringement with everything. Maybe you don't recognize where it came from, so it entertains you... But, I promise you that they just ripped it off from someone else.
If they don't put anything out with their own character(s), there's high odds they're not the original creator of it at all, in any way, and that they copy-pasted it. Because uncreative oddballs will not usually have skill to draw, or write.

Most people are creative enough to break the canon mold by at least self-inserting. So, if you are uncreative, and just stick with the canon... You're weird. Congratulations. You might not have talent, but you're abnormal, so people will appreciate it, adore it, etc. (Yes, there are people who think it's cute, sweet, comforting, nice, unexpected, different, etc. (Not me. I think it's weird, and I disapprove. But, I promise you that people exist who will view it positively. And, some of them themselves have creativity.))

Why do I make that promise? You must never have heard of moe.
Flaws are cute.
And, abnormalities are cool.

If you're uncreative, but you want to change that, can you? Yes.
It's a skill. You can work at it.
I would recommend starting with self-inserting into canon universes. Yes, you do need to make up an explanation of how that happened. No, it doesn't have to be original, but if you imagine yourself going through the unoriginal story, it still might give you original reactions that twist it into an original story as it goes.
You could just keep throwing unoriginal plots at yourself, and see what happens.

Another recommendation when doing fanfiction... Invent a new alternative universe like they do in the X-Men, so it's excused if your rendition of a canon character is off. You should still try to be accurate... But, maybe you WANT to alter some things. Or, maybe you don't mean to... *grimaces* ...Whoops!
