When planning a garden, not everyone has an estate sized yard to work with. Just because you have a small area or even just a balcony, doesn't mean you can't still have your own outdoor paradise. Here are some space saving tips to that may come in handy when landscaping in small places.

Maybe it's all the press Carmel used to get when its most famous resident - actor Clint Eastwood - was the hands-on local mayor. Or maybe it's the gorgeous white sand beach that's said to be the best on the Monterey Peninsula. Then again, it could just be all of those storybook cottages - the ones with names instead of street addresses - that make Carmel seem like a storybook village just beckoning travelers to visit.

Should be realistic and not become too ambitious, particularly when it is your first time for growing a garden. Bird lovers should not miss the opportunity to visit Swan Lake Iris Gardens, which is the only US public park to feature all 8 species of swans. The 150 acres is lovely from May-June when the extensive plantings of Japanese Iris are in full bloom. Visitors who are unable to see can still enjoy the gardens through a series of Braille plaques along an exploratory trail through the property.

Facilities: This development benefits from a regular electricity and water supply, street lighting, and bituminised roads. Residents enjoy a street cleaning service, weekly garbage collection and security. This is a safe, peaceful and secure area. Future plans include a shopping mall that will open in 2012, together with restaurants, and other facilities such as playgrounds and a sports club with swimming pool and tennis courts.
