How Common is PTSD?

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can happen when you have been through a trauma. An injury is a shocking and terrifying occasion that you see or that happens to you personally. During this type of event, you believe your life or others' lives are in danger. You could feel frightened or think that you've got no control over what's happening.

Going through trauma is just not rare. About 6 of every 10 (or 60%) of men and 5 of every 10 (or 50%) of women experience at least one trauma in their lives. Women are far more likely to experience sexual assault and child sexual abuse. Men are far much more likely to experience injuries, physical assault, fight, calamity, or to see death or injury.

Dealing with a trauma doesn't mean you'll get PTSD. Though over half of us go through some type of injury, PTSD is developed by a much smaller percent.

Below are some facts (based on the U.S. population):

About 5.2 million adults have PTSD during a given year. This is merely a small percentage of those who've gone through a trauma.

About 10 of every 100 (or 10%) of women develop PTSD sometime in their own lives compared with about 4 of every 100 (or 4%) of guys. Find out more about girls, injury and PTSD.

Who is most prone to develop PTSD?

You're much more likely to develop PTSD if you, although most people that go through trauma WOn't get PTSD:

Were directly subjected to the trauma as a witness or a victim

Were critically hurt during the occasion

Went via an injury that has been long-lasting or very intense

Believed that you were in danger

Believed that a family member was in danger

Had a serious reaction through the event, for example crying, trembling, vomiting, or feeling apart from your environment

Felt were unable to help a beloved one or yourself and helpless during the injury

You're also more likely to develop PTSD if you:

Had an earlier life-threatening injury or event, like being abused as a kid

Have another mental health difficulty

Have family members that have had mental health issues

Have little support from friends and family

Have recently lost a family member, particularly when it wasn't anticipated

Have had recent, trying life changes

Drink plenty of alcohol

Are a girl

Are poorly knowledgeable

Are younger

This could be because these groups are more prone to undergo an injury. For instance, in a larger percentage of African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans were in combat than whites.

Your culture could likewise change how you react to injury. By way of example, people from groups that are willing and open to share issues might be more ready to seek help.

PTSD along with the Military

You may see battle when you're in the military. You might have already been on missions that exposed you to horrible and life threatening encounters. You might happen to be shot at, seen a pal get shot, or seen death. These kinds of events may lead to PTSD.

The number of Veterans with PTSD varies by service era:

Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF): About 11-20 out of every 100 Veterans (or between 11-20%) who served in OIF or OEF have PTSD in certain year.

Vietnam War: About 15 out of every 100 Vietnam Veterans (or 15%) were now diagnosed with PTSD at the time of the very most recent study in the late 1980s, the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study (NVVRS). It is estimated that about 30 out of PTSD Community every 100 (or 30%) of Vietnam Veterans have had PTSD in their lifetime.

Other variables in a fight scenario can add more tension to an already stressful situation. This could lead to other mental health issues and PTSD. These variables include everything you need to do in the war, the politics throughout the war and also the kind of enemy you face.

Another cause of PTSD in the military can be military sexual trauma (MST). This is sexual assault or any sexual harassment occurring while you are in the military. MST can happen to both women and men and may occur during peacetime, training, or war.

Among Veterans who use VA health care, around:

23 out of 100 girls (or 23%) reported sexual assault when in the military.

55 out of 100 women (or 55%) and 38 out of 100 guys (or 38%) have experienced sexual harassment when in the military.

Than there are female Veterans, there are many Veterans that are more male. So, even though military sexual trauma is more prevalent in girls Veterans, over half of Veterans with military sexual trauma are men.
