Be careful of what you write, sometimes it might come true
Alice always dreamed of the most perfect world, each day she would draw pictures and tell tales to her friends. Everyone loved her stories and she was such an excellent writer. She mostly tapped into the distortion of reality, bending the fabrics of space and time through unbelievable creations; people in her school called her the ‘Shape Shifter’.
One morning, she had an idea for a great story about a boy named Luis who is trapped in a parallel universe through a special mirror. She started thinking about how he would get into such a world and how his alter ego would be. Her ideas came whirling in majestically and with her pen and paper she began to write. The more she wrote, the more she was dragged into the work; she preoccupied her time and even lost track of it until her mother knocked her out of her trance.
“Allie!” she called out, impatiently. Alice kept writing, so captured in her work. After a silence her mother called out again. “Allie!” her voice was becoming very irritated, Alice sighed and put down her pencil. She walked downstairs to see her mom holding her purse and staring hard at her. “Do you want to be late?!” her mother asked quite angrily. Alice just shook her head, “Sorry mom, my mistake.” They walked out the car; all she could think about was her story.
Her thoughts wrapped around the boy named Luis, and now a newer idea came to mind; what if he had no dreams? Another great thought; what if he lived in a universe where everything was the same and the sunlight never shone? The ideas flowed as she arrived to school, leaving her troubled in her own mind trying to capture a good concept on what her story should be about. For a time, she sat in the car completely unaware of being at school until her mom nudged her, “Allie.” Alice looked up at her. “Oh, sorry mom, thanks for the ride,” a thought came across, “I’ll be at the library after school.” Her mom gave her a tired nod and drove off.
Alice continued into the building, locked deep in thought concentrating on Luis. What would he look like? How would he act? How would he dress? What would he do? She came across so many territories in her thoughts that her mind would not allow her to enter. Straining herself, she focused on one main point; her story would be about a dream, a dream that Luis had about being trapped in nothingness. His voice became real in her head as if she was interviewing him.
“Alice, I’ve been having these – these dreams…” he would start.
“I see, tell me about them…” she would reply.
“One I’ve seen countless times, of nothingness; a vast space of nothing.”
“How does this make you feel?”
“Scared and alone. Alice, I’m scared terribly. I don’t know what this is supposed to mean.”
She grinned at her creation and added in some parts thoughtfully; everything that he dreamt of, all of his nothingness was created to his horror. Alice grew a bright smile knowing the conflict. It would have to be man v. self. Slowly she imagined psychotic conversations to his self, wondering who he was and where he was while at the same time trying to survive in this mess of a world he created. He had become paranoid in her twisted imagination, creating him to be a suffering boy with so much to say but no one would listen. Finally, she captured the main part of her story and smiled delightedly. “Perfect,” she said to herself, then went off to class.
