Title: A Celebration ’Verse/characters: Dilon Mondragon, minor water elementals. Prompt: Rain Word Count: 855 Rating: G Notes: Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain.
It had been raining for several days now. A steady, relentless downpour beat at the windows of Mondragon Estate. Dilon stared dully out of the many windows of the solarium, a normally warm and sunny room. Today it was cold and boring but the rest of the house seemed stifling to Dilon. She was suffering from a severe case of boredom.
Jaden was away for the afternoon so there was no escape for her in his fast car. She might go for a walk around the grounds to talk to the water elementals that were dancing and cavorting across the lawn and gardens. Dilon smiled at their antics. The decision was made, she would go outside and have some fun on this dreary day. Ten minutes later she was decked out in blue galoshes, purple raincoat, a striped purple rain hat and a purple and blue striped umbrella and walking steadily down a flooded path towards a cluster of dancing sylphs.
Their skin was a an everchanging mirage of blues and green, their hair a dark green. They were as tall as Dilon but looked much more mature. They were completely naked which would have bothered any other normal girl but Dilon was used to seeing the water elementals in all their glory. As they spotted Dilon slipping and sliding across the green grass the nymphs began dancing and twirling in the rain toward her. As she neared the group Dilon's spirits began to lift and the world began to look a bit brighter. This was the magic of happy water elementals, Dilon knew.
“It's Mistress Dilon!” one clapped gleefully and placed a wreath of water lilies and greenery about Dilon's rain hat. The water elementals that lived in or around the Mondragon Estate all knew how to speak several different human languages, the fruits of labor of one of Dilon's eccentric linguist Great Aunts years ago. Dilon was showered in hugs and kisses by the group of eight water nymphs. She hugged and kissed them all in return and took hands of two as the group began another circle dance of joy at the rain.
“Great Niksa is blessing the world with all of this water, Dilon. We are all celebrating across the globe!” The nymph on her right informed gleefully.
“Across the globe? You mean it's raining everywhere, all over the place even on the other side of the world? Impossible! The weather just doesn't work that way.” Dilon thought maybe all the rain the past week was making the nymphs drunk or delusional. It couldn't be raining in every part of the world. Not possible.
“Oh, not normally. There is The Balance, of course, and the kings live by it or we all suffer. But this week is the celebration of the Water King's daughter giving birth. A rare occasion amongst our kind, you know. We do not breed as quickly as humans. A birth, especially a royal birth, is one of celebration and an agreement has been made with the other kings. Do not worry, no permanent harm will come to our world.”
Dilon thought about that. Elementals, creatures of Fae one and all had their own logic. “Our world” most definitely meant the actual planet of Earth, so the natural balance would not come to harm. But what about the humans? It had been raining steadily, sometimes heavy and sometimes light for the past week. In some parts of the world that might cause devestating destruction to human homes, buildings and other human made objects. Chaos most certainly must be reigning all over the world. But the planet itself was in no danger. Dilon shook her head and sighed. Growing up with magical beings helped her figure out their logic but it always struck Dilon as odd and not quite right.
She stayed with the nymphs for a while gossiping with them, braiding their hair and having hers braided and listening to some of them gush over her handsome cousin Jaden. Even the fae could not resist his charm and good looks. As the dull light that shone through the rain clouds grew dimmer Dilon said goodbye to the nymphs who would continue to celebrate into the night and indeed until the rains stopped completely.
Dilon would have to tell her family the news of the royal birthing. One of them probably already knew first hand or would have guessed outright. Oh well, it would be something new to talk about over dinner tonight. Life in the Mondragon household was never dull and that included their dinner conversations.
