Title: Sleeping In is Not an Option ’Verse/characters: The two main characters from my Mondragon story. Mondragon is the family name, the two are named Dilon and Jaden. Prompt:Snow Word Count: 551 Rating: G Notes: I really like these characters. The main story is sort of light urban fantasy but this little ficlet doesn't have any magic at all.
It was a quiet morning, the weak sun struggled to shine through the thick cover of clouds. Dilon knew it would snow sometimes today. She yawned and rolled over in her bed away from the window and snuggled deeper into her blankets. School was out today due to the night's previous snowfall so she did not feel the need to get out of her deliciously warm bed just yet.
He cousin had other ideas apparantly as he banged open the door and shuffled in carrying his video game console and accessories. “Get up lazy! I'm going to cream you today!”
Dilon groaned. Jaden would pick her precious snowday to wake her up far too early. She blinked and rubbed at her crusty eyes and sat up. Her usually straight brown hair was clumped on one side of her head which made Jaden snort in laughter. Dilon gave him a face of mock-anger as she pushed her covers down and swung her feet over the side of the bed.
“Is it so important you had to wake me up? You're not in school anymore, but I am and I never get to sleep in on a Wednesday!”
Jaden shrugged as he sat down in front of her big screen tv and began setting up his system. “not my fault you decided to stay up past three when you saw the first snowflakes. Not my fault you missed breakfast either. You're parents wanted me to bring some food up but I ate it on the way.”
Dilon gasped and threw a decorative pillow at his head, which he promptly dodged in the easy way he always did things. “Are you serious? No breakfast? But I'm hungry!” Shoving on a pair of thick socks she pelted in her pajamas out of her door and down the hallway towards the kitchen.
Inside the kitchen food was still set out and her mother was sitting at the breakfast table reading the morning newspaper and drinking her usual cup of coffee. There was a plate and an empty glass sitting in front of her waiting for Dilon as usual. It was barely past eight! Dilon fumed as she stumbled around the kitchen sleepily filling her glass full of orange juice and plate full of sausage and biscuits and eggs and cheese. Dilon's mother looked up with a smile. “The way you came crashing down the stairs I think Jaden must have fooled you again.”
Dilon rolled her eyes as she tore into a biscuit smothered in grape jelly. Once she had swallowed she answered, “Yes! He woke me up and said breakfast was already over and there was none left over for me!”
“Your cousin is a big tease. You should never believe a word he says.”
“But we're best friends. I can't just not trust him, Mom.”
“Being friends with a nineteen year old boy would be very strange for you in any other situation but it's good for you two. I'm so glad you have such a close friendship.” Her mother smiled kindly and took another sip of her coffee. Dilon waved a goodbye as she stomped back up the stairs with her pile of goods and glass of sunshine.
It was time to beat her older cousin at his favourite game. Once again.
