I don't remember if I ate or not, but I understand because you have to fast before the surgery (apparently you can die if you throw up during the surgery. :I I dunno how but I was told. So it might not even be true. buut it could also be a rumor to have patients make sure they wouldn't eat so they won't throw up

It is very very rare that you would die, I think. But it can be dangerous. When you're knocked out, you can't control you body. You could wind up inhaling your stomach contents or going to the bathroom or something.
