Edit: Okay, I got severance; here goes nothing.

It wasn't that he didn't know what it was like to be destitute: not at all. It was that he felt like he had sunk to a new level of desperation as the summer heat radiated off of the dirty sidewalk. He had thought it was all behind him now: the struggle, the not knowing where the next meal would come from, the aimlessness he had run from. The locks on his apartment would have been changed by now. Severance pay had barely got him through the week, but it wouldn't last another.

He was drawn back to memories of the child he was. The one they had tried to smother in bows and pink dresses no matter how much he protested. He was such a pretty girl, they told him, but he didn't want to be. It wasn't right. For years, his wishes had been silenced.

Now, as he wandered the labyrinth of streets, he felt choices being taken away from him again. The silent horror of that stifling house and those tight smiles. He would have to go back someday, and that day felt achingly soon. He would have to hide everything he had been--everything that freedom had granted him. But was that day today? Was his desperation really that complete?
