Comfort shivered a little, and pulled the grey scarf that she was wearing as a shawl a little tighter around her shoulders. It probably made her look a little overdressed for the mixer, but she hadn’t brought a lot of clothes aside from school clothes, and she would be freezing in just the dress. She had the opposite concern about her earrings, that in contrast to the blues and greys of the rest of her outfit, they would look out of place, too colorful, but there wasn’t a lot to be done about that either.
This was going to be difficult for any number of reasons not related to thermal regulation. She didn’t really know how to be around groups of people without being high, or how to mingle and casually socialise at all. Going to school dances high hadn’t been fun, exactly, but she’d been able to get through them. But she wanted to do more than just get through this, she wanted to make friends, get to know people, have as much fun as everyone else seemed to be having.
She was glad to see that the girls she’d met upstairs earlier were there. It was good having a couple of familiar faces, although she would have to remind herself to actually talk to other people as well, especially the boys, whom she wouldn’t have as much chance to meet outside of class. But for now she was going to do the easy thing.
“Hi,” she said, approaching Bobbie,
“uh, how’s it going?”
