Revini looked out the window of the car at the large building she was told was a school. Between the giant skulls and fire she wondered what kind of school it really was. "Listen... thanks for bailing me out and all, but this." she said motioning to the school outside. "You never said I would be trading a jail cell for an insane asylum." The man in the suit sitting across from her in the limo smiled to himself but remained silent, a reaction that put Revini on edge. She hated adults, especially the ones who thought they could boss everyone around. The man sitting across from her was a perfect example. He was a scumbag with a fancy tie, but he had also offered her a way out of prison. She knew he was probably getting something out of the deal and normally that would have been reason enough to give him the finger and maybe a swift kick to the crotch, but she had a record and that meant a few years in prison at least. "Besides, I can always just sneak out tonight anyway. Might have to steal a car first, don't really feel like walking across the open desert." she thought remembering the long drive through the middle of no where just to get to their destination. Suddenly her door opened nearly causing her to jump out of her seat. She had been so focused on the man across from her she didn't realize the driver had walked around to let her out. She ignored the drivers attempt to help her out of the car and slid her way out of the seat herself. She had gotten use to getting in and out of cars while handcuffed. She had thought about breaking them by transforming but reconsidered when she saw the man driver for the first time. The brick wall of a man held an arm out guiding her to the building as if she possibly missed it's existence. "Oh, is that where we're going. I wondered why we stopped." she said sarcastically before starting up the steps past the driver. She could feel the man in the car watching her as she walked and she hoped after today she would never see the guy again.

As they walked through the halls she saw all the students stop and whisper to each other as she passed. Revini ignored it and kept walking. "You're not going to be staying so who cares what these freaks think." she thought. Overall she managed to stay passive until one student made the mistake of pointing and laughing at her. She looked over the the tall blonde girl laughing at her as her friends all tried not to make eye contact. Revini no longer cared about the man escorting her and hardened her wrists snapping the cuffs and charging towards the girl. The driver/bodyguard escorting her was big and no doubt could easily pull her away, but he was too slow to stop her from reaching the girl first, and in the second it took him to catch up Revini had grabbed the front of her uniform and headbutted the blonde bimbo. When she felt the large hands pull her off the other girl she didn't resist. She had heard the cracking during the hit and a quick look back confirmed that she had broken the girls nose. "Hope you like your new nose to go with your ugly face!" she yelled as she was quickly pushed down the hallway. Finally a few minutes later they came to what she assumed was the principles office. As she went to open the door the big man grabbed her arm and shook his head. "We wait until we are called." he said. She was tempted to punch him for touching her but instead just pulled her arm away and took a seat on one of the benches across the hall. Soon she saw the door open and two students walk out, neither even noticing she was there, which was fine by her. "I just want to get this over with. I'm tired of this slab of meat following me around." she thought looking at her escort to see if it was her turn yet. When he didn't move she sighed and slumped even further into the seat. "Maybe I should have chosen prison."

xxxxxxxxxStaring wide-eyed with shimmering silver irises, Weiss listened intently as Rez talked about hostages. Instead of actually defining the word or even explaining it, Rez told her it was Prof. Eden’s favorite besides carnage. Weiss cocked her head to one side, a smile frozen on her confused face. ”Car-nage?” she echoed. When he said Prof. Eden would teach her how to ‘create’ it, she looked up with hopeful eyes, ignoring the hardcore glare that was obviously directed towards her. Prof. Eden rejected blankly. Weiss puffed her cheeks and pouted begrudgingly, still not getting an answer to her one and only question of the day. Watching the woman phase through Rez her jaw immediately hit the floor, and her attitude changed from upset to amazement as she stared in awe at the mysterious woman. The corners of her mouth slowly curled up and she lost it. ”Ungewöhnlich!” Unusual! She exclaimed, waving her arms around and making odd swooshing noises; imitating Cryska’s action. ”She has zuperpovers like Night.” The young girl spoke to no one in particular, slowly slipping off into her own little world. Aimlessly walking around the Death room, the injury on Weiss’ head finally got the better of her, making her drop to the floor. The fall looked intentional, but Weiss laid there with wide eyes wondering how she ended up like that to begin with.
xxxxxxxxxOn her first attempt to sit up her head throbbed. Not quite sure of what to do, she quietly lay back down and folded her arms behind her head. With her fingers, she traced the throbbing patch on the back of her head, knowing exactly what it was; when they fought Rez, she was slammed against a wall and her head was slightly damaged in the process. Though she wasn’t sure how her forehead got cut, she just left it alone for now; it wasn’t the time to make a scene, her classmates have been through enough for one day. Hearing Prof. Eden speak of a man named Iroh Hattori her ears twitched, taking in every last bit of information she gave while keeping her eyes on the clouds above. Professor gave a lot about herself, making Weiss grow more interested by the second. Before anyone could respond or continue the interrogation, Prof. Eden sent them all home with strange homework and upon hearing the separate work she was assigned, she shot up in a sudden burst of energy. Jumping to her feet she faced her Professor and stood tall, ”Roger!~” she saluted proudly, but as she turned to follow Mana and Christoph out of the room she was stopped by Lord Death.
”Just a moment child,” he called. ”I’m Veiss!” she corrected, turning swiftly on her heels to face the principal. Lord Death gave one of his goofy smiles and continued, “Of course! Weiss, I have noticed you seem very happy, did something good happen?” He asked. Weiss pouted her lips and put a hand to her chin, pondering for a bit before answering, ”Veiss is alvays happy!” She cheered. “That’s good!” he gave a thumb up, keeping his merry countenance his next few word were released bluntly, “That is why you are being reassigned a new partner.” Weiss blinked.
xxxxxxxxxRyuto shoved the door open and trudged out with Weiss clutching his ankles for dear life, with every step he took she dragged along the ground wailing ”NEIN! NEIN! NIEN!”
xxxxxxxxx”Weiss, let go, I’m just transferring classes!”
xxxxxxxxx”NEIN!” she dragged out, ”Don’t leave me Schatz!”
He picked her up from under her shoulders and stood her up straight; grabbing her head he turned her to face a blonde in the hall. Weiss suddenly stopped flailing and stared in awe. Her cheeks brightened a bit as she looked back at Ryuto in disbelief, ”Zat’s a girl…” Ryuto nodded. ”SHE’S PRETTY!”
xxxxxxxxx”—and your new partner.” He added in. Realizing this, her eyes widened, simultaneously pulling her mouth into a full blown smile. Her chest rose, making her look as if she was about to explode then suddenly released, showing the true projection power in Weiss’ voice, ”Hallo! I’m Veiss, your partner!” She beamed, her cheerful tone reverberating off the walls of the hall.
xxxxxxxxxHer ears perked at the soft sound of footsteps and she remembered that Ryu was leaving, turning around to speak she grew quiet as she watched him walk down the hall. For a moment her face was blank watching his back move farther and farther away; watching the thread that connected them strain and snap, she knew they wouldn’t be meeting as often as he made it seem. There was nothing that stung more than loosing someone she cared about, and although he wasn’t dead, things would really change without him around. But she knew he walked away before it could get emotional and make the parting more painful than it had to be.
xxxxxxxxxClenching her fists and biting her bottom lip, her nose reddened and her eyes welled with tears. ”Schatz!” She shouted, watching him turn slightly. In that moment she mustered together all the feelings building up inside her and with one heavy intake, she let everything out with her parting words. ”FIGHT ON!” She yelled out, keeping her face scrounged up so she wouldn’t cry. Without turning around, he gave a peace sign, ”Rodger!” He yelled back; mimicking Weiss’ signature phrase.
xxxxxxxxxHer teary-eyed countenance changed immediately; wiping away all the tears she broke out laughing, giving a proud salute to her friend whom she will never forget.

                                                xxxxxxxxxWeiss never forgets.

xxxxxxxxxTurning to her new partner she reached out a hand and reintroduced herself in a more civilized manner; offering a hand to shake with the sweetest lopsided smile, ”To ze future?”

The answers she got from Professor Eden weren't the best Mana hoped for. Most were vague, but some were enough and one caught her interest greatly. Hearing about Iroh Hattori was a definite 'to ask about' subject. She knew of him, they were related very distantly from the house she came from, although she had never met him. What she did hear about him was just that he was living as a Buddhist in India and that he had a special philosophy when it came to transforming into a weapon. Anything else or the details of said philosophy were unknown, something she intended to ask her new teacher about it when the chance arose.

Still, Mana remained a little weary of the Death Scythe. It was confirmed she didn't like meisters, only admitting to bad experiences and she had to wonder what could have happened to make her feel that way. 'Maybe it has something to do with her illness?' Mana wondered. If the teacher were just sick like an ordinary person, it'd be treated as such, but Cryska went directly to the Headmaster himself for help. It must have meant it was something beyond anything ordinary and that meant Mana would probably keep a good distance from her if it was some unknown germ.

After they were given the odd homework of coming up with a joke to tell the teacher, Christoph took his leave with Mana in tow on his back. They stopped in the hallway and the girl was set down. The blue hoodie was straightened out from how crinkled it had gotten and the weapon flipped her hair back. "Yes, let's, master!" Mana responded. "Even though Rez isn't good, he gave us the push we needed to perfect the first tale! Strike while the iron is hot, as they say! We should take advantage of the free time and get in some good practice!" the girl seemed to be dodging the second part of the plan, laughing in a deflecting tone and beginning to walk away. That was until she was grabbed by the hood and her partner gave her an expecting look. Her lips twisted into a pout, staring sad eyes that weren't working. "I don't wanna go to Crash, master! All those people bumping and grinding! I feel like I have five years of my life shaved off every time I go in that cess pool of sweat!" Arms flailed widely in protest before dropping limp at her side with a sigh. "Fiiiiine.." she gave in. "One drink! And I'm not dancing with you! I have enough to worry about with Weiss and the last time we went there I got trapped in the crowd and then you threw me to be carried overhead!"

Rez pouted as Cryska didn't play along and instead just changed her form enough to phase past him. As she took a seat across from the reaper other students ran up to ask more questions. None of them caught Rez's interest and he instead turned his attention to the fake clouds over head. As he watched them lazily float by he thought of the phantoms again and the students who were taken. 'They're dead.' he told himself but it wasn't their deaths that we're nagging at him. 'So why take them, they could have killed them right there... and why those students... and they have bodies, what happens to the bodies?' The questions kept coming and for the first time in as long as he could remember he didn't know what to do. He hadn't noticed when he started repeating "I am me." again, but when he did finally take note he didn't bother stopping. Almost as if in response his thoughts went back to Fang, his old partner, then to Ty. As he did an overwhelming sense of loss and abandonment washed over him. Each memory was another stab of pain into his heart and soon he was lost in a different type of memory, the moment of his death and being alone in the darkness.

He didn't really remember waking up, it was more like one second he closed his eyes then the next he was wide awake and standing in the dark. The pain of dying was gone and all he felt now was cold. No emotion and no regret. At first he thought the cold was comforting, freeing, but it wasn't. Even with all his pain gone, the absence of that happiness he had being alive, of being with his partner was so much worse. The cold became a curse, something worse then anything he had ever imagined. The pain and loss was still there but he couldn't feel it. Instead of hurting it was like a hole inside of him threatening to consume everything he was... any fear of that soon faded as he heard the screams. The phantoms in the dark determined to take everything he was before the hole in his chest would, and for a moment he wondered if he should just let them.

Blinking he snapped out of the thought and looked around to see most of the students leaving. Cryska had just finished her tea but didn't bother standing up. Once most of the students left he walked over to the table with the Death Scythe and the Reaper. "I'm not just here to open portals am I." he said quietly so none of the students overheard. "You want my secret. That's why you sent those two on the mission, because Ty can survive the phantoms attack and Agnes might even stand a good chance." The reaper didn't look up and instead poured another cup of tea. After a drink, though with the mask Rez wasn't sure how he managed to drink the tea, he set the cup down and replied using the same hushed tone. "I know how you did it, that's no secret. In fact its such an simple concept that anyone would understand how it was done." Rez knew what the reaper was saying was true, but it wasn't the whole truth. "Well if that's the case then why did you send them off alone." He knew out of everyone at the Reapers disposal only a few might have the skill to protect themselves. It might be an easy concept but in practice it's much more difficult. "It seems its a tough skill to learn even my-" Rez cut the reaper off. "No it's not. It's very easy to learn, most already know it." It was obvious that he didn't understand why they couldn't achieve something that a punk kid on the street had managed to do, and it was another thing to add to his list of accomplishments over the immortal. The sound of a yawn broke the tense silence and when Rez looked over at the Death Weapon he could smell why she was so tired. "I'm going to assume my new babysitter is tired from her trip, since I know I'm anything but boring." he reached out his hand to Cryska to help her up. "Maybe if you watch us humans for another thousand years or so you'll finally figure out my secret. Have fun in your tower, Reaper."

Mana complained at the idea of going to Crash, though that was probably his fault. She generally didn't like crowds, especially when they were all packed together and sweaty from dancing, which was something Christoph took advantage of by throwing her right into the middle of it. Before they left Weiss came out and suddenly it was like they were in a scene from some love story. Weiss and her partner said goodbye and though they said they would see each other again they both knew it may never happen. She yelled after him and he turned for a moment, holding his own tears back, and giving a peace sign before walking around the corner. It was a touching moment, though the heartbreak of it ended up being ruined a bit when Ryuto turned the corner and suddenly clutched his groin and ran into the bathroom. 'Huh, wonder how long he'd been holding it in.' Christoph thought nearly laughing but kept quiet to not ruin the moment. "Lets get going while she's distracted." he said grabbing Mana's hand was leading her out of the school.

Because most classes were still in session the practice grounds behind the school we're empty. Moving past the open field and into the small forest that was beyond it. Even to this day Christoph wondered how they managed to grow the forest in the middle of the desert town. Many of the trees had large bands around the trunks to let students practice without damaging the trees themselves. Finally they reached the back of the forest and the overlook of the rest of the city. He liked to practice here because even as the sun was setting there would be enough light to keep going. Looking back at the forest he could see the tree they had practiced on since they became partners. The giant leather band had been cut away and you could see the metal strips built inside of them. Huge gouges had been cut into the metal but so far none of the wooden trunk could be seen. 'Hopefully today will be when we change that.' he thought before looking at his partner. She was looking at the same band and from what he could tell she was thinking the same thing. 'Except she's probably threatening the tree in her head.' the though of Mana accusing the tree of evil and how she, a famed Hattori blade would be the one to cut it down, made him smile to himself. It also caused him to want to instigate the situation a little bit. "You know I was out here the other day, and I'm pretty sure I heard this very tree say that no blade could ever cut its bark." he waited a moment to let it sink in. "Not even the heavenly blades of the Hattori. I couldn't believe how confident it was, none the less that it was talking to begin with." he stepped up next to his partner and held out his hand, giving her a wink. "Maybe we should teach it the real power of a sacred blade?"

Not talking was kind of like drowning. That was all Nat could think about as she stood there, biting her tongue, trying not to comment on what Weiss was saying to their substitute teacher. She had felt the light pat on the back from her partner, and grinned, though she was feeling really tense. Even with all the people around it seemed really quiet to her, the lack of her own voice dimming the voices around her a bit, making them drone. The thing that caught her attention the most was their homework. "A Joke?" She finally said, letting out a breath she didn't know she was holding. "Why a joke? I mean you could have assigned us anything and there are a lot more things that would make sense than a joke." Luckily the words coming out of Nat's mouth were quiet, just mumbles, though Tabby could hear them clearly. The weapon of the pair finally just started pushing the mumbling meister towards the door of the room, wanting to get out of there before something else happened. "And what's with the flames, I mean yeah she said something about a witch soul, but I didn't think that kind of thing could happen to weapons after they reached death scythe status... And what's with her being sick, there was something definitely up with that. And Rez was really weird right? He was definitely dead back in the classroom, and all he says is that he is too stubborn to die? And Weiss really should learn a little more english, her lack of understanding is going to get her killed..." The last sentence unfortunately was said right as Tabby was dragging Natalie past Weiss and her new partner. Tabby just waved rather uncomfortably, and continued pulling the babbling meister farther down the hall. "And what was with that shadow? Everyone seemed so horribly frightened by the video, but I didn't see anything weird in it.... I wonder if our teachers are gonna be alright out there... If something is out there taking meisters and weapons, Lord Death should be really careful not to send anyone outside that can't handle themselves.... I guess that means we aren't going on any missions for a while, huh Tabby?"

Revini wasn't good at waiting, especially when being forced to do something she didn't want any part of. Luckily the wait wasn't long before more students left and the guard/driver finally stood up. As he did two more students walked out of the office, another boy and girl. The girl was hanging onto him as the boy walked along, letting her drag behind. 'Rough break up.' she thought while acting like she wasn't looking. She really didn't want to listen to some stupid drama. The young man stood her up, moving her until she was facing Revini. The girl suddenly stopped complaining and looked her over before suddenly calling Revini pretty. "Uh, excuse you. Thanks and all but I don't know if you're my type." The girl ignored her and looked back at the other man. Something was said and the girl looked at her again before suddenly exploding into sound. "Wha- wait, partner?" before she had finished the sentence, the girl was back to talking to the boy again. 'That b*****d, he did bring me to an insane asylum.' As the boy left she turned her attention back to Revini, taking a moment to wipe her eyes before reintroducing herself. "Ya, I don't think this is going to work..."

Revini turned to leave only to see that the driver had stood up and was now blocking her exit. "Come on. I never agreed... gah fine." she turned back to the other girl who was still holding out her hand. She had a cut on her head and looked pretty beaten up but was smiling in a way that made Revini wonder if this was normal for her. She took the girls hand only to feel her shake so vigorously that Revini thought the girl was going to tear her arm off. Finally jerking her hand out of the other girls death grip she paused for a moment to decide if prison would be a better option after all. "I'm Revini. It's nice to meet you Vice." she said looking over her shoulder to make sure the man behind her was satisfied, but like always he just stood there silently. "Um, I'm still rather new here, maybe you can show me around." She said taking the girls hand and pulling her along past the man, flipping him off as they passed. 'a*****e, I'll just have to put up with this for now then I can take off tonight.'

Cryska raised an eyebrow ever so slightly when she heard Rez repeating "I am me." and it sounded close to a daze. She wondered what he was thinking and why he was saying it. Thin lips curled around the edge of the cup, taking in the last mouthful of tea when the deadman snapped out of whatever delusion he was caught in. 'It has to be related to what's going on..' Cryska reasoned. Otherwise, there wouldn't be any reason for him to cooperate with the reaper. The fact that he was meant it was something that even he was nervous about. How was it to feel nervous again? The sensation was forgotten, having gone so long without it. There was only a few things she felt strongly enough about to feel anything toward anymore. Most of it was enmity.

The name Rez spoke brought forth just that feeling. 'Agnes.' the Death Scythe repeated mentally and blood pressure rose almost instinctually. As if that word had an uncontrollable reaction on her body. Her weak grip around the cup became a strong one until Cryska noticed and released it gently. There was no sense in ruining her inner peace when the object of that animosity wasn't even present.

Cryska listened quietly as Rez and the reaper talked back and forth. It was a short conversation, one that weighed on Rez's patience for some reason from the sound of it. A yawn escaped herself, breaking the tension unintentionally. Energy, she had that, enough to do whatever she wanted - Cryska knew. It wasn't the body that was tired, but the soul. Like if she succumbed to sleep, she wouldn't wake up. Rez offered her a hand to help her up. Surprising. She didn't expect that he was still capable of that kind of simple courtesy.

Thin fingers wrapped slowly around the outstretched hand. The grip was weakly and flaccid, not by choice. Dull golden eyes stared back at Rez, lethargic and sullen. Staring not because she was waiting for anything, but because of what she had just realized. Their hands. There was a feeling from Rez that shouldn't have been possible. Warmth. Not unless the one grabbing his hand was even colder to the touch than a corpse. It wasn't anything Cryska was doing to herself - a symptom she hadn't even noticed until that moment when she grabbed Rez's hand. There was less time than she thought.

Rez pulled her up, gently in fact. Cryska thought she might be yanked up. Maybe she was being too harsh still. There wasn't much else to say to the reaper and she didn't really feel like it either. If it were anyone else, he would probably try to chat it up, but with her it was always the bare minimum just to get her away. Pace wasn't hard to keep with Rez's walking, despite how she appeared. Motions were just as smooth still as she had come in with.

                                                            ---

"If you're... planning anything... at least wait until... I get checked out..." Cryska pleaded lowly while they walked through the halls. Once she found out what was causing all of her symptoms, she didn't care what he did after that point. The room they came to was just the ordinary school Infirmary, but the one who ran it was special. "You're.... Laberlin's apprentice... right?" she called out between ragged breaths to the man who had his face buried in a microscope. "Hm? Ah!" he first made sounds of confusion, then excitement. "Yes, yes!" he replied. "Come in, come in! You must be Cryska Eden! I've read a lot about you in the professors research notes! To think that I would be able to inspect the original model!" the man; blonde with bedhead and oval glasses was clearly excited to meet her. "Well!" he added, clapping his hands together. "You look like you don't want to waste time and neither do I! So! Lay down on the bed there and I'll see what ole Laberlin did to you!" Ignoring most of what he was saying, Cryska blinked slowly before taking a few steps toward the bed. She laid herself down gently, staring at the ceiling and the wisp of fire from her mouth pointing straight up that was smaller than it should have been. The man wheeled over a screen next to the bed with a bunch of different sized wires attached to the back and the other ends attached to gloves he had strapped on.. Cryska stared at it briefly before turning her attention to the starry eye'd doctor. "Curious? It's something I created myself! It translates wavelengths into a clear picture! Very, very useful since I don't have Soul Perception, wouldn't you say?!" he finished. "...Get on with it.."

As Cryska took his hand he felt her weak grip. 'You're worse then I thought. He's killing you from beyond the grave. I wonder if you even know it yet.' Rez thought as he escorted her out of the room, not bothering to look back. As they walked she did a good job at hiding her exhaustion, only once did he notice her fumble, but she recovered in an instant and to anyone that wasn't looking for it wouldn't have even noticed. Rez didn't make mention of it though, instead he was focused on planning and scheming. Having free reign of the DWMA campus was a rare treat these days, having lost that ability after nearly tearing apart the entire town. 'Oh the mistakes of youth, if I could go back and do it all again... This place would be rubble.' he thought smiling to himself only to have the memory of Fang flash through his head and cause any joy in the thought to instantly disappear. 'No, If I could change anything it would be what I did to you.'

Before reaching the infirmary Cryska again did something very unlike her. She pleaded with him to behave until she was better. Rez just nodded in response. "It's no fun if you don't fight back." he said smirking at her. Rez would keep his word, but not because of the reason he gave. Instead he found himself sympathizing with the weapon. She was broken, like his old partner was. 'But she can still be freed.' he thought to himself. When they reached the infirmary she greeted the doctor and hopped on the inspection table. The doctor mentioned the name Laberlin and Rez subconsciously started grinding his teeth. Rez had spent a year as a prisoner of the DWMA, and Laberlin was the one tasked with discovering how a dead man continued living. Rez had his soul torn at and picked apart hundreds of times by the man. "So you we're the first one huh." he said when the doctor mentioned the original model. "And here I thought I was special, apparently he thought you were a threat even before I was." The doctor stammered for a moment as he jumped to his teachers defense but Cryska cut him off. By her reaction Rez's confirmed that she did know what was causing the problem. The doctor shot one last dirty look at Rez before turning on the monitor and starting the procedure. Rez watched intently, he knew what was causing the problem, but why it was there was the part he wanted to know. 'What are you hiding Cryska? What is trapped inside you?'

'The tree. My old nemesis. We meet again.' Mana thought as she glared daggers - or rather, katanas at the tree. The same one she and her partner always trained on. They had history or more accurately, Mana had history with the tree. She claimed she was sharp enough to cut that tree in half, but had still yet to make good on her word. So every time they came out to train it was a reminder and motivation to push herself. It was childish, but sometimes thats all someone needed.

Mana's head turned suddenly toward Christoph. Her eyes narrowed threateningly at the goad, but she was smirking just as wide as he was. "Ara, is that what it said? Are you sure it wasn't just you hallucinating with guilt because you think I need a whetstone?!" she accused playfully. "That tree always talks smack behind my back! I think it's time I amped up my attack!" Mana pointed a finger at the tree with her other hand on her hip with it cocked. "I'll cut you this time, of that you can be sure!"

That tree was going down. And then they'd move onto another. And another, then another! Until the whole wooded area was gone! Mana readied herself, closing her eyes and bowing as if she were in a dojo. Practice was practice and so the proper respect was shown. 'Visualize the weapon.' she told herself. Just like Professor Carde had taught her. A weapon was only as sharp and their form as right as the image in their mind. She had seen kids from the NOT class mess up their transformations before. It wasn't pretty and just because she was in EAT didn't mean she was exempt from that if she didn't train.

The hilt came first. A grip that her meister could handle with ease. She pictured the blade balanced perfectly with it. Pristine, forged to perfection. The shimmer of the red steel. The fold of the edge, Precise. Meant for slicing and decapitating in one stroke. That was the kind of weapon she was. Not the sort that requires multiple hacking and slashing. Mana was a sword that carried a divine breath that blew through obstacles without leaving a trace. No residue, no splatter. Ever.

Mana had taken her meisters hand. When she did, the usual blue glow surrounded and enveloped her as she shifted into her weapon form. Her reflection flashed across the blade and she grinned at her partner. "I feel good about today, master!"

The doctor took Cryska's hand in his, like the start of some secret handshake before placing his other over the top of the two. "Give it just a second and we'll begin to see it." A thin gold line darted across the screen before it went black again for about ten seconds. The next time it appeared it illuminated the whole screen before the stream of gold faded into the background into a steady frequency. The line was erratic, never the same spike twice, it varied from very small to larger than the screen. There wasn't any sound, but if there was it would probably be just as distorted as the wavelength frequency itself.

A couple more seconds passed and in front of the wavelength a soul began to form. The wavelength was the brush that painted each piece on the monitor until the whole was complete. Cryska didn't seem surprised, only looking blankly at it because she already knew. The doctor on the other hand - his jaw was dropped and you could clearly see a confused fear in his eyes. It was almost as if he was unsure what he was looking at.

On the monitor was Cryska's soul. About eighty percent of it was the normal healthy golden glow of the death scythe it belonged to. Then there was the other twenty percent on one side that resembled the kind of appearance a corrupted soul possessed. Red, with misplaced scaling. Encasing that abomination was an even greater one. The cube - looking like a rubix cube with a bunch of smaller boxes making up a single one was the greatest offender. There were parts that were shattered and piercing the soul, one side was constricting Cryska's soul to the point where it looked like it would burst. The other side looked as if it had melted, was melting or fused to part of her soul. The general shape of the cube was skewed, but somehow still held its shape despite everything.

The doctor immediately leaped from his chair, pulling off the gloves and digging into a bunch of different books that were probably Laberlin's research notes. "...Hey." Cryska called out and her turned his head when she called out. His face was pale, but he was trying to hold a weak smile for her sake. "...I think it's time... I had it taken out.." she said in a soft voice.

The doctor stammered once again, "Yo-- ah--" looking back and forth between Rez and Cryska. "I need time to prepare." he finally managed to squeeze out. "A day... at least a day." he added. "Take the remainder of the day to rest. No transforming, no... whatever else it is Death Scythe's do. In fact why don't you just stay here? In the mean, I'll speak to Lord Death and make sure I have everything I require." This time Cryska was the one who looked slowly from the doctor who was already on his way out of the door in a hurry to Rez. "Leave if ya want..." she told him. "...Keep the damage to a... minimum, would ya?" she added, holding up her index and thumb perpendicular about an half an inch apart to stress the 'minimum' part. She kind of figured he might comment on what he saw, but really if it was anything like an insult or gloating that he beat death and she wasn't, Cryska wasn't in the mood for it. She'd rather him go off and destroy something than hear those kind of things.

Mana played along and started making promises that today was the day the tree would fall by their hand. Normally he left that kind of confidence to his partner but today he couldn't help but be a little confident himself. The fight against Rez earlier had been their most stable resonance to date. Mana took his hand and slowly, deliberately transformed herself into her weapon form. Christoph watched as the blade faded from the blue glow of her transforming to the red color of the blade. And could see his partner flash across the shine of the blade. "I think you might be right, it's a shame though. I think I might miss this old tree once its gone." he replied smiling at her before swinging the blade a few times and falling into a striking pose. As he readied himself to take the first strike, Christoph thought back to his training. Growing up he had been trained effectively to use pretty much every weapon. Unfortunately while this included swords, most of the swordsmanship training focused on European blades. When he was partnered with Mana he had to relearn everything from a very basic level. He remembered turning to his professors for help but Carde was a very different weapon despite also being a sword. Just like the training he had received as a child, any lessons they gave him wouldn't help him learn how to use a blade like her. Everything was learned from scratch, and while this meant progress was slow at times it also built their connection much stronger then it would have been if he had been partnered with a weapon he was already effective at using. Each time they improved it was because of their combined hard work, none of their achievements belonging to just one of them. They were a team and that core idea was mirrored in every movement, every practice, and every success they had. As he stood there waiting he felt her soul fall in resonance with his. Resonating was a sensation almost impossible to describe. Matching someones wavelength put you in sync with them and when it was accomplished it felt like they became an extension of you, no longer a separate entity. Resonating with someone was a feeling similar, yet completely different. The moment they fell in sync he could feel their souls resonating together and even though Christoph knew the actual act was silent, the explosion of power that followed felt deafening. Even without focusing on it he could feel their souls extending out and surrounding them. Once their resonating souls stabilized around them Christoph moved to strike.

While every attack was meant to be a killing blow, the patterns he ran through weren't the man focus of their training. Each cut left the steel bands with deep fissures where Mana's blade barely noticed their existence as it cut through. Sliding back into a defensive position, Christoph took a moment to breathe. Looking at the tree he could see the damage they had done to its metal armor but he still couldn't see any sign of damage to the tree itself. In the sudden silence he felt the warm wind blow and the tree creaked in the wind. 'I think it's mocking us.' he said over their connection. Resonating like this he knew she could hear him clearly. They weren't two souls trying to send a message across they connection, they were one soul sharing the same thoughts and feelings. 'I guess its time we show him Inari's first tale.' He held Mana out in front of him in one hand. and the soul that surrounded them expanded even further as their resonance peaked. While Mana was amplifying their wavelengths Christoph focused on containing that extra power. Instead of letting their souls radiate out he focused on pulling the wavelengths surrounding them back, compressing them into a single point. The wavelengths we're pulled into a single spot in his free hand as he moved it to his side. When enough of the power was compressed Mana's sheath appeared at his side and he slid the blade into it. As her blade was returned, the wavelengths still surrounding them we're sealed inside. It gave the impression that their resonance had ended as the air around them suddenly calmed and there was no sign of the power that had been there before. This wasn't the case though, as the storm that was their wavelengths continued to build inside the sheath, containing and focusing them directly into her blade. All that power contained in a single spot make it extremely powerful when drawn, but until then Christoph was unable to use that power to fight. While it didn't matter when fighting a tree, it could be dangerous against an opponent that fought back. 'Thats why I can't slack off.' he thought releasing the sword and striking the bare metal surrounding the tree. This was the one part of his training with his family that still payed off and each strike was strong enough to dent and bend the metal bands. It wasn't doing as much damage as the blade but that only drove him to strike harder. 'I've got to push harder. If I can't tear apart this armor myself then I don't deserve to be her swordsman.'

                                                    ✭ ✭ ✭Today, the E N D begins...

Rez watched as the procedure started and the lights traveling across the monitor lit up. It was slow and the picture while clear was still just a two dimensional image. While the gloves the man was wearing helped give a glance of what the soul looked like, Rez had brought along tools that perfectly mimicked the ability to see souls, and it was much less cumbersome. 'Though in all fairness I cheated, If I didn't have access to a witch's magic at the time I probably wouldn't have been able to do any better myself.' he thought remembering how much he learned from the witch when she thought he was nothing more then a goon she used as her personal muscle. As the image became clearer it was apparent what the problem causing Cryska's condition. The cage she had was misshapen and damaging the healthy part of her soul, but that wasn't what caught Rez's attention. "Well, that's a thing." he said looking at the dark red madness infected part of her soul inside the cage. Rez had seen the damaging effects of madness infection up close, but he had also seen all the applications madness had. While the doctor ran from file cabinet to desk digging through notes to understand what he was seeing, Rez ran through the possible applications of how madness effected her soul. Cryska told the doctor she wanted it removed and he stumbled over his words again before walking out of the room. Rez smiled watching the man stumble his way to the door, his body not able to move fast enough. Rez then looked over to see Cryska looking at him. She mentioned something about leaving but Rez shushed her. "Shh, no reason to go play with some kids when I can do so much damage here." he opened his bag and took out a notepad and a pen. "Now be quiet, I'm going to teach you something. Madness is a funny thing. Take your soul for instance, its infected with the stuff, but why? How did it get infected in the first place, and more importantly why is it only on one side of your soul. Madness infects from the outside inwards until it infects the core of your soul... but yours isn't." Rez watched for a reaction but got nothing. He pouted for a moment before focusing on taking notes before the doctor could return. "The cage isn't the problem... well it is, but only because of... hmm, its almost like two but the madness isn't really... not exactly." he said out loud before he heard Cryska clear her throat to speak. "Hush, I'm thinking." he said waving her off like a child. "If you want that cage off I need to figure out whats happening." he suddenly could feel her gaze focused on the back of his head. "What?" he asked in an irritated tone turning towards her. While she was good at hiding her reactions, Rez could clearly see the confusion at his statement in her eyes. "What, you think the Reaper will let him remove the cage. Cryska, you might be as gullible as Greenie is."

Rez turned back to the screen and kept taking notes. "You're dangerous." he said curtly not bothering to turn back to face her. "Dangerous to the Reaper and his school. We both are, and while his shielding the school from the phantoms is his way of keeping me in line, the cage is the only way he can keep you in check. With Laberlin gone they have no way of making a cage strong enough to replace the one you currently have and the Reaper isn't going to allow that kind of madness to spread in his school. The Death God is all about control and order, We have no place in his world." He slammed the notebook shut suddenly and continued to talk as he put it back into his bag. "I'm sure they'll come up with all sorts of excuses but in the end that's all they are. I'm sure it will be something along the lines of 'if we remove it it could kill you' or something. They'd rather condemn you to a slow safe death then risk saving you by removing it." Standing back up his eyes met hers for a moment and he could see the mistrust in them. He suddenly spoke with any hint of playfulness removed from his voice. "I know you don't trust me, and you're probably right. I'm dangerous, manipulative and a liar." he paused for a moment then laughed. "There was suppose to be a but after that... hmm. Nope, I got nothing. I really cant be trusted. Guess we'll just have to hope I'm wrong about their answer." Right as he finished the door opened behind them and the doctor came back in, looking even more nervous then before. "Oh no doctor, you look distressed, is something wrong?"

Everyone seemed to have questions for the substitute. Tabatha wasn't sure how useful the questions were, but then again doubted any really useful questions would get answered. Since nothing pressing was stressing the weapon, she decided on listening instead of asking. She listened to the chatter of her class, and Cryska responding, feeling just a little odd knowing Natalie wasn't a part of the noise. Tabatha was always one to listen in on others conversation, but the only thing she felt was truly relevant to her was the homework assignment their teacher gave. A... a joke? She did not feel humor was one of her strong points. Since their teacher had assigned it, she wanted to take it seriously, especially if they were really being graded. Ironically, being serious wasn't in the nature of a joke. She was glad to hear Natalie finally mumbling again, and decided it would be best to take this chance and encourage her partner towards the door. For what Tabby could have sworn was at least the third time today, class was dismissed, so students were parting ways. She couldn't help but notice some parting rather dramatically, as Weiss was being reassigned a partner. Had Tabby not been listening in to Natalie's words, she might have been more unsure of how to react to such a scene.

It all seemed to be pretty on topic, right downt to the part about Weiss.
Whoops, she thought, probably should have pushed a little faster. After a fairly awkward wave, Tabbatha corrected her mistake and pulled Natalie faster to the exit. The topic of Natalie's rambling changing pulled Tabatha's thoughts away from the brief awkwardness. Her first instincts had her recalling the video she'd watched so carefully. She had been trying to imprint the footage in her mind, but now was not the chance to test it's accuracy. The last bit about not going on any missions hit her hard. A little proffanity crossed her mind, seeing as Natalie was almost certainly right. "We were so close... why are those stupid cloud shadows messing it up," she muttered. It was a rather immature way of looking at such a serious situation, but she couldn't help it. It was how she felt at the moment. Her arms crossed, and cheeks puffed out for a full on pout. "Hmph, no missions. There's more time for training and school," she decided. Training wasn't actually a bad idea, and neither of them had been beaten too badly by Rez. She thought that was what Mana and Christoph had gone to do, although she couldn't say where. I can't fall behind Miss Hatori, Tabby thought, still holding a little childish jealousy. She didn't want to lose to her classmates, it was enough trouble not to fall behind, but for now maybe focusing on that joke wasn't a bad start. "Do you know any good jokes, or do you want to look for joke books at the library?" she asked. Tabby was definitely taking this assignment in all seriousness, and that meant she needed good research material.

Night S. Starsune & Alkaia Maota
**********************

Two become one, our souls have been connected.
A bond that's stronger than words.

Night paled more than she already naturally was at the mention of Vrtra, she grabbed her meister's arm and attempted to abscond out of the room as past as possible. "Night...." Alkaia mumbled in a slightly demanding tone. The scythe sighed and glanced at her classmates as they went their own way, making a mental note to pop by and check on Weiss's new partner, and letting go of the Amazonian girl's arm once they were out of the school and were on their way to their secret spot. "I'm-a have to explain my reaction aren't I?..." Night mumbled ,Alkaia giving a small 'hm' in response causing the weapon to sigh for the billionth time that day. Reaching a desolate part of town Night approached a large bolder and kicked it over revealing a hole big enough for a human to fit down it.
Letting the her meister go down first the scythe followed and pulled the bolder back over the hole. Lying on the ground the weapon started her explanation. "Alright simple explanation. Vrtra is my aunt. She's wasn't the cruelest of my mother's sisters, that would be the only family member that is still alive. Ansiera, my only remaining aunt, is a Amphitere witch. She's also the reason why I zone out at times, she messes with my dreams." Night concluded adding a extra detail for some reason. "Could she be a threat?" Alkaia asked, sitting next to the green eyes girl and petting a foot tall paint dragon that curled up in her lap. "Not unless she's in cohorts with those phantoms or something." the American girl stated simply, following her meister's actions and petting the meteor dragon lying on her chest. "We should tell Lord Death just in case." Alkaia suggested, standing up holding the dragon.
"In the morning, for now let's train a bit then let's check with Weiss and her new partner." Night replied standing up and putting the dragon in her arms down. The Amazonian girl nodded letting her dragon fly off as she followed Night to an area in front of a small pipe. 'Today I will finally achieve perfect balance!' the meister thought determinedly. "Alright here we go." the dragon witch muttered transforming into her weapon form. Alkaia caught her and set the top of the scythe to the ground and lifted herself up off the ground with it as the two dragons from earlier open up the water pipe in front of the pair.
Taking a deep breathe as Night's weapon form swayed slightly Alkaia focused on the sound of water rushing. The pair had worked on this for weeks and Alkaia refused to fail yet again. 'I will achieve perfect balance...' the Amazonian girl thought calming down. After a few minutes of staying like that and not a sound coming from either one, besides the meister's breathing, a ring echoed through out the cave. "Alright!!" Alkaia cheered jumping back from her position as the pipe closed and Night changed from her weapon form.
"Have to say we have gotten better." Night told her meister grinning. Nodding in agreement, Alkaia walked over to the make-shift ladder and climbed up pushing the bolder back over, letting Night and the two dragons fly out before putting it back. "Now to check in with Weiss and her new partner!" Night exclaimed walking off to try and find Weiss and the new girl with Alkaia Splatter, the paint dragon, and Shaeon, the Meteor dragon, following behind. "Weiss! New girl!!" Night called looking around as Alkaia continued to chant about having perfect balance. 'You might be in Death City, but you're not safe from me my traitorous niece~.' a voice rang in the back of Night's head, though she brushed it off.

And now in sync our fates will come together.
And it will not go unheard.
