The sudden lightning attack had drawn all of their small group over to the scene of the fight. Zidane had gone bounding over the civilians in order to get there faster. Eiko stayed on Nanaki's back as he went closer to the battle. It was good since their combat ability was unknown. Even if she could use magic, she seemed frail. The same of Garnet. The young woman at least might be more agile though.

Vincent looked at Garnet again to try to gauge her again. Comparing her with Tifa muscle wise..it was hard to tell with her loose sleeves, but her muscle definition in general didn't seem as defined as someone that relied on physical attacks. She vaguely of reminded him of Aerith.

He glanced back over to the group by the enemy when one of them started to give orders to everyone. The silver hair made him pause for a moment.. along with actually having been told how to fight in a group. Vincent only furrowed his brow slightly. It'd been a long time since someone told him what to do.

Back to his thoughts, he looked back to Garnet. "I'll cover you." The gunman stated as he drew his gun and shifted to aim it at the apparent copy of someone. That made him a little uneasy. Was this a new enemy?..or were there scientists like Hojo here? Either way it had to be killed. When his sight of the imitation was clear Vincent fired at it.

When they reached the battle site, Eiko looked around, seeing what was going on and trying to figure out what she could do to help.

"Is that an epitaph?" Yes. Zidane had said it was, it that certainly seemed to be the case. Two women who looked exactly alike. One fighting, the other on the ground. There was one summon in Eiko`s arsenal that could help out here.

But she had to stay back. She knew perfectly well that she wasn`t good on the front line. All she could do was summon and use white magic. The front lines didn`t look very fun, anyway. The risk of dying was so large, and she was so young. Six wasn`t nearly old enough. She`d seen a lot, but there was still so much she wanted to do before she died.

So, the little summoner brought her flute to her lips and started the summoning process. She hoped it would work. The phoenix would be an immense help here. It would attack the epitaph and heal the woman it had copied, allowing her to rejoin the battle.

Most of the people around, joining in on the battle, were complete strangers. There was Zidane, Dagger, Freya, and she had recently met Nanaki and Vincent. But these other people she didn`t know or even recognize. But that silver-haired man shouting orders seemed to know Zidane.

As she finished, she noticed the summon starting to work. The sky turned firey red, and the phoenix descended, spreading its light over the battle. And drawing more attention from those around, but she didn't seem to notice that. The bird revived the epitaph's victim, as well as sending a ball of flames toward the monster before disappearing into the sky.

Eiko beamed happily, proud of herself and relieved that her summons still worked even here. She waved at the sky, shouting out her thanks to the phoenix.

Serah Farron

Serah was excited to have arrived in New York City this morning. She had been traveling around the continental United States chasing after rumors of magic, trying to find a way back home. When she had first landed on Earth a year ago she had wanted a chance to be more independent so she chose to get by on her own. She handled herself and her surroundings pretty well, especially considering it was the first time she was truly alone, but became lonely after awhile. I don't have time to think like this, I have more important things to do right now and can't let myself be plagued by negative thoughts. She was in another new place to explore and hopefully the rumors about the area would be true. Magic, monsters, people that seemed to be from another world, if these whispers were true she could be one step closer to finding a way back to Gran Pulse. With any luck the rumors I've been hearing will turn out to be true this time. I think it will since something just feels different compared to the other places I have searched, almost like I'll find what I've been looking for. That would be nice and maybe I'll figure out more about the dreams I've been having as well. Before Serah started looking for any clues though she wanted to head over to the shopping district to look for a new jacket. Glancing around for the quickest way there she spotted an entrance for the subway and decided on that since she didn't want to chance traveling through the traffic on the roads. Once she had purchased her ticket and found somewhere to sit Serah once again let her thoughts wander, this time to her dreams.

She hadn't experienced any dreams last night, although that may not be a good thing. She had been dreaming of her home for a bit, of Snow, Lightning, and all her other friends on Gran Pulse. The dreams tended to make her home sick, after all it had been a year since she died and wound up on Earth. The most recent dreams unsettled Serah, they seemed too similar to the visions she had while trying to save her sister. The one she had the night before arriving in New York City made her particularly unhappy and just seemed weird. It was almost like a lucid dream and because of this she had been able to call out to her sister. The pink haired girl wished she knew why she was having these dreams now and if they had any connection to her final vision on Gran Pulse, or to her visions in general, and what it all meant. There's nothing to be done about it for now though so I just need to focus on other things. I'm in New York City to find a way back home, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the surroundings while I'm searching. I'll just look around for a bit and see if I can find any leads for a way to Gran Pulse, or for others in a similar situation to mine a year ago. With this thought and a jerk from the stopping of the cart Serah exited the subway walking up into the shopping district of New York City.

Making her way through the throngs of people Serah began paying attention to the conversations going on around her, she heard talk of some oddities; things these people couldn't explain including strange people and a monster showing up out of no where in Central Park. It could be a good lead, even if there aren't any monsters right now this at least lets me know I'm in the right place. Perhaps I should head over to the park to look for clues, after I get my jacket though. Normally I'd say it could wait, but I'm in the area anyways and it shouldn't take up too much time to find a decent one. I just need to make sure I keep an eye, and an ear out for any other occurrences today. The sight of a lightning strike caused the pink haired woman to pause mid-step. She was puzzled since the weather forecast she had checked hadn't mentioned any possible storms and after a look around she noticed there was no rain. The sound of more lightning and the stirrings of a panicked crowd led Serah to believe that this was what she had been looking for, others like her, and made her way through the people fleeing from the immediate area to locate the conflict and help in what ever way she could.

Squall stood in the same spot for a couple of minutes, deflecting the odd bolt that came his way, or darted towards the boy next to him, but he couldn't just keep doing this - he needed to end this before anybody got really hurt. He glanced towards the figure lying on the floor and grimaced, hoping for any sign of movement.

                                                              'Well, anybody else.'

After a couple more shots singed the air around them, Squall noticed the array of characters that were slowly converging on the area, and looked to his right a little nervously - he had no idea which of these people were here to help, if any. The man in red definitely looked a little dangerous - and the wolf... thing. With the fire on it's tail.

'What the hell is going on?'

When nobody attacked him, he decided to give the strangers the benefit of the doubt, and took a couple of steps forward, reluctant to take the command. It was just as he opened his mouth that a man clad in armour stepped forward, issuing orders to cover the group. At first, he was a little confused - Odin had always given him assistance at critical moments, but after their initial encounter he had never spoken. Wait. Was this Odin?

                                                              '... No. Works for me.'

Squall nodded and grunted a little, darting around the woman so that he could come around on the opposite side to the knight. As he circled her, he noticed the similarities between his weapon and her own, and his confidence grew - after all, he was Garden's first gunblade specialist. He deftly twisted his weapon, gripping the trigger as it lay on his shoulder - the blade jutting out behind his head. He waited for a few seconds, looking for an opening that came very shortly after, as a ball of fire crashed towards the woman.

'Phoenix? ... It doesn't matter, take a leaf out of Seifer's book'

"Get her battle-ready and find her weakness - see if she knows how to defeat herself!"

He yelled out his own orders as he mimicked his lost rival, and dashed in after the fire attack to follow up with his own. As he reached the target, he swung - pulling the trigger repeatedly as he launched into a serious of heavy strikes in an attempt to end the battle quickly - or at least throw this thing off balance. One swing even flew over that monkey-child's head.

                                                              'Oops'

He had no clue how long he had been walking. After first awakening in the strange garden, he searched all over it for his lost comrades. There did not seem to be a soul around. Over the bridges and across the stone paths underneath terraces and the canopy of still trees. “Where am I?” the thought constantly knocked at the forefront of his mind. All the winding paths in this labyrinth kept him guessing. However if this was a maze, a trial, then there would be a way to conquer it and thus, a way out. Eventually he came to one last clearing, a paved circle with thick patches of flowers of varying shades atop healthy green stalks. Now he finally spotted the massive grey towers looming close by. Was he dreaming? He could not find an explanation.

Yet he had come this far, if he stopped, there would certainly be no answer. Finally, Firion escaped past the hedges and black gate to the city surrounding it. But what greeted him were the confused and wary eyes of strangers. Just by their looks, he could tell that they would not be so easy to help him, and would rather avoid his gaze. After all, it was even strange for them to see a man in full armor and weaponry stalking about their familiar streets. What should he do? He could not retire his weaponry and his legs were growing tired. Bizarre mechas traveled down the roads, and through their tinted windows he could see each manned by one person or more.

However, soon he found his calling.

Down the streets marked by the numbers 7th and 8th, and 39th and 40th, a commotion stirred. The streets were packed with citizens that had begun fleeing out in a panic. They ran past him until one woman noticed his odd place in the crowd. “You, you’re one of them aren’t you? Down there! There! Monster! She’s a monster! Who are you! You’re all monsters!” she cried in hysteria, backing away from him, only to be pushed forward in the crowd. “No I━!” But it was no use, for she had fled. More? No, it couldn’t be his companions. They would never attack the innocent unless under some spell. Firion narrowed his eyes and charged forward swiftly, moving against the masses pooling down the street. Bags and articles of trampled clothing and rags scattered the ground.

Then he heard the sounds of weapons clashing and a rain of gunfire. It was then he spotted another person heading in the same direction as he. It was a girl with fetching hair. Although, she appeared unarmed. What could she be planning?

Just then, the sky above changed dramatically like it was on fire. He came to a halt as a winged beast descended from the flames in the same form. A grand flash of light touched down making Firion lift a hand to shield his eyes. Just as soon as the summon had appeared, it shot back up into the sky that reverted once more to its original color.

There must be great danger for that type of attack to be conjured. Nevertheless, Firion emerged onto the battleground where figures stood in a standoff with their weapons, as well as a red marked beast with a small child on its back. What surprised him the most were the duplicates. In fact, they resembled the girl he had just seen. “Doppelgangers. . .” Firion had experienced his own at the Cave of Mysidia. Perhaps it was guarding something, just as his had behaved. There may be a way they could freeze it then. Was it the will of whatever had placed them all in this unnatural world?

The copy was being attacked in a frenzy by a man with a broadsword, which seemed to radiate with its own light and power. He knew several members of the group, and like a natural leader, ordered the surrounding fighters to distract the enemy while he begun to attack it. Yet with so many people attacking, what if they hit each other if the copy could dodge? If they no option but to fight, then the real version would have the greater hand at overcoming such a foe. That is, if she could predict her own movements. Still, Firion could not stand back and wait for the tide to turn. He wanted to help. He took the bow from his back, plucked out an arrow and strung it back. When the doppelganger was preoccupied with the influx of attacks, he released the straightarrow when the guard was down to him. At least he could keep her distracted from attacking the Magic Users. Firion would not take the risk with his Teleport magic, although it would be extremely helpful to use Time Magic. With that thought in mind, he stepped back to stand to the side of them, bow still aimed and held tight. In case a surprise charge came there way, he would protect their casting.

((ooc;; listening to the NieR soundtrack while working on this is so great~ -u- ))

The epitaph tensed as slowly a group of fighters trickled in. It hadn't expected so many here, now that it had spent time in this strange world devoid of magic. Glancing around, the copy of Lightning attempted to count how many to watch as she held up her blade to parry the oncoming physical attacks. A blonde zipped around her, unnerving the creature and she slashed to scare him back but it was too difficult for her to handle both him and the warrior who'd approached. Zidane would find that phoenix down in victory after managing to snatch an item off her.

"Leave!" The copy had a grasp on language and the duplication of Lightning's voice was spot on. With a yell of anger, she unleashed an area sweep with her blade to knock the nearby opponents into the air, as well as deflect a few of the oncoming bullets from a long haired man in the distance. His aim appeared to be quite good, forcing her to run from that spot in order to dodge. Dashing across the pavilion, she kicked up one of the small tables to provide more cover from him and began to summon up another round of lightning magic when the sky turned red. Ducking behind the small cover she'd made, the epitaph cried out as the ball of fire crashed into the area and burned.

Elsewhere, in Hope's lap, she stirred.

"... what happened?" Aqua eyes blinked awake as the sound of screams and metal clashing rang out. Wincing at how weak her body felt, Lightning attempted to lift her head from Hope with mixed results. Now seated upright, she felt a bit dizzy and slightly nauseated. Whatever had attacked her had done well to drain her of any energy she had this morning. Glancing at the back row of ranged attackers, the savior was impressed at how many they had on their side. A pang of concern hit her when a very young girl cheered at the back of the line on a... cat?

"The guardian, what-" Finally turning her head to look behind, Lightning's eyes widened at the sight of herself opposing them. How? It took a moment to regain her composure, startled from the shock, before she could put a hand on Hope's seated shoulder and push herself up to stand. He cast another healing spell to steady her and it helped wash away some of the numbness. She wasn't sure what had brought her back initially but would ask about it later, defeating her doppelganger took top priority for now.

"Keep it busy!" The woman shouted out, thinking over what strategy would be best. It was easy for her to tell what she would do in a dangerous situation but would her doppelganger act the same or utilize her abilities in a different course? Frowning, the woman regretted not being more careful so they could have avoided this entirely. It was just difficult to give advice when she could barely keep up with the fight. For now, all she could do was watch and take note of what it appeared to be planning. She hoped that by keeping the doppelganger moving, it would struggle and be unable to use Mediguard to sustain itself for too long.

So why was it not shielding itself?

In the midst of the attacks, the epitaph parried with Warrior of Light, Squall, and Zidane but failed to block several of their swings. By keeping the trio closely engaged, however, it made ranged attacks risky. Blood dripped down the copy's body, more blood than Lightning expected and she furrowed her brow in thought. What was it doing? The realization hit her a moment late as the woman clenched her fists and shouted.

"Get back!" By then, however, the surge had already begun.

((Sorry this is so late guys. My only excuse is that I work retail so this time of year is... yeah. But I promise I'll be better about posting again now. Once again, my apologies. Her burst of lightning attack at the end should be fairly strong because she's taken a chunk of damage, by the way- mainly for dramatic battle purposes! >: D))

A man dressed in an all white afghan hurried through the shopping district trying to get to the source of the disturbance. He softly cursed the need to keep his backpack of school books on him and the fact that he didn't have any items with him. Regardless of the warnings Bugenhagen had given him about the world not being as safe and peaceful as it seemed, he had decided his magic would be enough if things should go wrong and had left all items back at the Wave in case the others needed them.

Then he had worked late at school, lost track of time, missed the last train, had to spend the night at the University, and then by chance had decided to pick up some things from the shopping district before he made his way home.

Getting off the subway he was met by sheer chaos. So of course he did what any self respecting white wizard would do. He ran towards the source. Finally pushing his way through the last of the stragglers he took a moment to examine the situation. There was a growing area of openness as the humans evacuated the area. It seemed no one was hurt. Both good things. Moving closer he examined the people actually fighting the monster. A few faces he recognized but several of them he didn't. 'My, I certainly picked the night to stay away.' he thought amused,

moving around the outside of the group to get closer to who he assumed was hope he froze. That attack. The arrow..... Memories flooded him and he was suddenly back in the cave, promising that selfsame man that everything would be alright and to use ultima to defeat the emperor.

Shaking himself from his daze he finished his trip and smiled behind his veil. So that was the situation. Very well then. Taking his staff that he used as a walking stick he focused his energy into it and cast the spell, calling out in a clear voice. "Hope Reborn! Curaja!" as he aimed at Hope and the woman in his arms. Amusement danced in his eyes, and he winked at Hope. Then turned his attention to the problem of the doppelganger.

She was obviously strong and fast and had extreme skill. He winced in sympathy as the group od close fighters got hit with the lightning strike. That must have hurt considering the man was wearing all metal. Luckily for his companion the armor had acted as a lighting rod so he took most of the attack. Which wasn't nearly as lucky for him considering he was faceplanting with the ground.

"This will never do. Return to us, breath of life! Raise! Healing winds blow your blessing! Curaga!" He cast at the man in armor. Minwu then took a moment to do a mental inventory. That was a lot of magic to send off like that and he didn't have any restoration items. He needed to make his last few spells count.

"Time obey my command. Slow they foe and speed thy Ally! Slow! Hastaga!" He cast and lowered his staff, saving the last drops of magic for emergency cures. His eyes trailed to the group of people nearby, wondering if any of them were healers as well or if they only had attack magic and weapons. The two women seemed at least to be healers judging from their weapons and he felt the urge to scold them for letting things get so bad. Why had they not buffed their allies?! Why hadn't the pink-haired original been healed before he arrived?

He bit his tongue, surely they had their reasons, just as he had his for being overly mysterious and wearing such covering clothes. Instead he glanced at Firion and the look in his eyes softened. "My friend. I hope this does not mean you are also dead. We shall talk once we weather this storm. Just like old times." he said and gave a soft chuckle. Yes, that was right, they had survived far worse than one doppelganger before. And this time they had lots of people with them.

(( ooc: minwu appears! Hurrah! I hope i got the effects of the lightning strike right. ^^;; I thought it'd be kinda cute if Light's armor acted as a lighting rod. since you know.. horns sticking straight up. If not I can edit it. ))
