Fortunately the firefly festival had passed without any serious incident, though Val couldn’t remember why she had spent most of the evening chatting with Gaston. She had even stopped being rude at some point, though she never made a joke, not to him at least. Puns were reserved for those who deserved them! Thus, when she walked into work that morning, she looked over at one of the officers at a desk and said, "Why didn’t Emma go to South America for vacation?” She only had to wait a moment for the groaned response of why she was torturing them with bad jokes. "Because she heard it was Chile.” She grinned at the officers as they shook their heads slightly. She seemed like such a serious person, but she had that one terrible pun a day deal. As soon as that was done, she went into the office and started on some paperwork.
The morning was slow until her cell phone rang, her personal phone at that. With a raised brow Val answered the phone. "Hello?”
“Hey Sweetheart, it’s your mother. I’m calling to wish you a happy birthday! You are wearing something nice for your birthday aren’t you?”
It didn’t really matter that the chief of police was twenty-six years old, her mother was still hoping for a chance to dress her. Val had a tendency to wear boring clothes, sure she was well dressed most of the time, but she was never particularly fashionable. In response to her mother though, the woman looked down at her uniform and shrugged as she answered truthfully. "I’m wearing my uniform since I’m working. I’m a grown woman mother, I have responsibilities.”
She could practically hear her mother pouting on the other line. ”Well fine, but expect a nice box of things on your doorstep by the time you get home. I made sure they would arrive today. Your dad says happy birthday too and I’m sure your father will do something or he’ll hear from me.” That determined and slightly arrogant personality was probably what had drawn Zeus to Val’s mother in the first place and Valarie didn’t doubt that her mother would manage to somehow get a hold of Zeus and yell at him to do something for Val’s birthday. Which of course would lead to Val calling him as well and demanding he knock it off. It wasn’t the easiest thing for demigods to get in touch with their godly parents, but sometimes they could manage, especially if they were determined and sounded angry enough to frighten a lesser god, which wasn’t the hardest thing to do when you could summon lightning to electrocute them and anything in the general vicinity. Honestly all you had to have was the right phone number.
Val did leave work early though, having spent only an hour or two in the office. She liked to give people off for their birthdays and as a result worked a little less on her own, though she couldn’t take the whole day off because she was the boss. She returned home, annoyed by the humidity and how quickly a thin sheet of sweat covered her brow and proceeded to lug a box filled with expensive clothing inside and shoved it in the closet filled with other things her mother gave her that she never wore. After that the chief of police decided to get changed and spend some time around the town. She could treat herself to a birthday brunch or something.
