From her past experiences around females and insects at the same time, Bastille was fully expecting Daphne to scream at the sight of the little lightning bug making itself comfortable on her nose. However, when the paramedic sitting next to her simply giggled and demanded that she send her the picture she'd taken, Bastille felt a crooked smile coming to her lips. Something about Daphne relaxed her; while she tended to be just a bit uptight around people she didn't know so well, she felt pretty at ease around the cute redhead.

”Yeah! And....sent,” The veterinarian said after a few quick taps on her phone, and the picture was off to Daphne's phone. She slipped it back into her pocket, giving Daphne a slightly shy smile as she relaxed in the grass. It had been a long time since she'd had such a nice time with someone; generally she just kept to herself and preferred the company of animals, but this was a nice change of pace.

She was glad that Daphne was such good company; after she'd become a huntress of Artemis, she'd taken vows to never put anything before serving her teacher and in a way, her spiritual mother. Though she would never admit directly to Artemis that she enjoyed staying in Asfalis more than traveling with her fellow hunters, part of her was happy that now she had some time to do what she wanted to with herself. It wasn't wrong to want to let other people in, right? Bastille had always been envious of those who were in love and wanted it very much for herself...surely Artemis could understand that. Well, it didn't matter now. She was probably over thinking things – after all, she and Daphne were just watching the fireflies together, right?

Then the paramedic suggested that they come back next year, and Bastille felt a bit of heat rush into her cheeks. ”Y-yeah...it would be great,” She agreed, giving the other woman a bit of a sheepish smile as she reached up to twirl a strand of her silky black hair around her index finger. Had Daphne kind of just asked her on a date? She wasn't really sure, but spending the festival with her next year sounded pretty great.

”Hey, do you wanna take the critters for a walk down the beach?” The veterinarian asked after a moment, her clear blue eyes flickering between Daphne's face and the spot where Snowball, Jax and Duchess were scampering around restlessly in the grass. ”Snowball's probably expecting another walk...she's so spoiled.”

”O-oh, but if you'd rather stay here and watch the fireflies a bit longer, we can do that,” She added as a slightly hasty afterthought. ”It's just...such a nice night, and at least the beach won't be crowded at all.”

The centaur had met a lot of beings in his day, but this was the first time he’d ever come across a fortune teller. How interesting it must have been for the little woman to be able to actually dream of the future. He couldn't help but wonder if it might have been a burden at times though, especially if she couldn't control it, what kind of things did she see? The future wasn’t always pleasant, and he wondered if such a gifting ever bothered her at times. She seemed content enough though. His ears twitched and he flustered, blushing and rubbing the back of his neck at her comment about his position. He kept quiet about it and only shrugged for the meantime, for they ended up with him showing her the fields soon enough.

Walking some into the tall meadow grass, Raine jumped a bit and caused a flock of fireflies to stir from their resting place on the grass, spreading even more into the sky. Turning go watch her awed expression he couldn't help but wear a sideways, almost dorky grin. He was able to see this all the time, so it really was just the same old same old for him, but to see her experience it like a foal exploring their world for the first time reminded him just how lucky he was to call this place his home. "Sometimes I forget, you just get to use to what you see all the time..." He remarked, blue eyes returning to gaze over the fireflies dancing across the field.

Exhaling calmly, one of his front hooves made a circle in the dirt. "You're welcome to come back sometime." The centaur suddenly piped up, tilting his head toward her. "There's so much more to the forest, I can show you around some more." He smiled, pacing a bit in place. "It'll be fun!" He exclaimed, a spark of playfulness in his eyes. He didn't know many two-leggeds, and she was awfully pleasant to be around. Settling down in the grassy field, he rested on his knees curled up on the ground comfortably, watching the sky for a minute until she wished to be escorted home.

"About before...it's not that I'm unhappy with my position." He sighed, not taking his eyes off of the sky. "It just wasn't ever meant for me. My brother was the leader, but after he was injured he never recovered enough to take back the position. I didn't have to step up, but... I dunno, I'm still getting use to it. Guess I just don't see myself as the leader type. It doesn't help that not all of the others are as fond of people as I am. It's a bit of a struggle sometimes." He admitted with a shrug and a sigh, fiddling with one of his braids.

"Good, I hate it when I trip over dead people.” he replied with a grin, as though tripping over corpses was something he did often. It wasn’t but it was a joke and only the densest of people would fail to understand it. A few seconds passed before a girl came tumbling down the hill, chasing after a baby unicorn, it wasn’t terribly big yet, at least not compared to the one he’d seen at the ranch and was definitely small enough to be carried. He blinked at the creature once before the girl started speaking. "Disturbing us? Nah, I’m disturbing him and you’re just passing through, aren’t ya?” he continued to grin, but didn’t make any indication of leaving. The moment that Virgil sat up, Misha took it as a hint that he wasn’t being shooed off just yet and that meant he could stay and see what the hell prompted the man to pass out in public on a festival night. He didn’t smell any liquor and for someone to get that drunk, well it would be pretty obvious. Maybe he was just weird too. The unicorn nudged Virgil and the girl asked if the both of them were alright and Misha blinked his large amber eyes are her. "Why wouldn’t I be alright? And don’t worry, he’s not dead. I asked.”

Of course, the blonde made it more enticing for Misha to stay when he asked for their names. Misha Pendragon was the type of person that just generally considered people his friends, even those he knew didn’t like him very much. Like Adrian, for example. He was aware, sort of now that he was calm enough to reflect back on things, that the police officer wasn’t overly fond of him and probably didn’t consider them friends, but Misha definitely counted Adrian among the people he knew and liked and would certainly buy him a birthday present, if he knew his birthday.

"I’m Misha Pendragon, the local wizardly annoyance and I’m always an interesting picture, thank you very much.” He replied with an exaggerated bow, the last phrase of his sentence spoken in a tone intended to mimic Elvis Presley. He might have used enough magic to have calmed down from rampant hyper terror to almost normal human being, but almost was the key word. He still had plenty of energy, about as much as a normal person started to day with at least. He looked over at the white haired girl a moment later and lifted a brow waiting for her to respond. It wasn’t often that he got to meet people that weren’t instantly annoyed with him and then on top of that, while he was in a state of relative calmness. He was still bouncing on his toes slightly, completely incapable of sitting still, but it was far better than he normally was. He did take a moment to whisper a small spell and conjure up a little unicorn of his own, a translucent figure that pranced around with Bluebell, teasing the poor creature into thinking it had a friend its age.

Lifting a brow she sighed. "Why would you want to be alone with someone you don’t know though. If this weren’t a crowded street and I wasn’t perfectly confident in my abilities to knee you in the crotch, I wouldn’t be here right now. For all I know you could be like a mobster without an Italian accent. You don’t look Italian though. You don’t work for Italians, do you?” She had nothing against Italians, she just didn’t bring a knife or anything with her that day, having fully intended to spend it with Jo, but things had happened differently and while Shiloh wasn’t the best at adjusting to changes, she was managing somehow, probably because of the pretzel with cheese. Best way to get to her was with delicious junk food. Maybe she just didn’t trust people, actually no, Shiloh didn’t trust people. Nothing had happened to her to make her believe that everyone was some kind of monster in disguise, but there was the chance of that happening, she’d grown up in a fairly bad area where she heard stories about all the bad things that happened to people, inflicted by and on men and women. She found that she was just much safer if she assumed everyone else was an a*****e. That and then she didn’t actually have to deal with making new friends because that was always awkward and never really ended well for her.

She lifted a brow at him as he spoke about his ex and shrugged her shoulders a moment later. "Relationships cause stress and drama and I don’t like dealing with either. Besides, it might not look like it, but I work a lot. I don’t have the time to mess around with some silly boy when I’ve got a career to look out for.” and a horde of pets, but that wasn’t one of the points she wanted to bring up, that would take away from her point, since she could easily assume Freddy would claim having five pets meant she was lonely and not that she just had a bleeding heart when it came to animals. All five pets were rescues; she couldn’t just leave the poor things to suffer. Shiloh huffed and crossed her arms, scowling at Freddy for a moment. It was weird, in her opinion, for a stranger who bought her a pretzel for being an a*****e (the whole damn situation was weird when she thought about it) to be giving her advice on relationships and how everyone should have one. Shiloh had rarely developed an interest in the guys she met. Once or twice she would admit that a guy was cute, had nice abs or a cute butt, but it was rare. Most of the time the people she met were complete assholes or stuck up pricks that thought because they were musicians making some money they could do whatever they wanted. There weren’t very many nice people in the industry she worked in, but she wasn’t there for the people, just the music.

Blinking again when Freddy asked about what kind of music she wrote, she just stared at him for a moment. "All of it, duh.” It took a moment for the young woman to remember that not everyone was able to write for any genre or instrument. "My mom is Euterpe, muse of music. So I can pretty much play anything, the basics are like ingrained in my head, but I still practice all the time. The basics are easy, it’s the multiple techniques for every instrument that can be hard. I think my favorite instrument is probably the piano, I play it the most, but I like the guitar a lot too, acoustic and electric mostly, bass is weird.” She paused to think for a moment and then shrugged again, taking another bite of delicious cheesy breaded pretzel goodness. "You got any favorite movies or shows?” Now she was looking for a chance to prove that yes, she did actually work and didn’t spend all her time playing instruments, though she would have loved to. There was a possibility that in one of his favorite movies or shows, she had written or recorded one of the songs from the soundtrack. She did a lot of her work that way, so that she didn’t actually have to leave Asfalis too often.

It only took a moment for Ian to pat the ground next to him and she sat down quickly, still smiling warmly at him. It was a lovely night and yet he still looked so forlorn, but Ailynn knew that he was a good person, he gave all the extra goods he’d baked throughout the day to orphanages, homeless centers and often stopped by the salon with some of her favorites. It was impossible for someone that kind not to be a good person. He often seemed devoid of emotion, something that Lynn generally took as sadness, simply because she couldn’t fathom how someone could not feel anything. That just didn’t seem possible, not to her at least. Regardless of whatever Ian might have thought of himself, Lynn knew what she saw, and she saw him being kind so often that she was determined to believe it and kind people were her favorite kind of people, so she made sure to say hello to Ian whenever she saw him. Thus, she sat next to him, smiling happily.

"Oh! Thank you!” Her smile widened as he complimented her appearance. "You look very nice today yourself!” She meant it, since Ian never really looked terrible. His hair looked especially soft though and she didn’t even think twice before reaching forward and petting it lightly. Messing with hair was one of her favorite things to do and she generally forgot that not everyone was accustomed to people just… deciding to style their hair at random. "Your hair is so soft!” Within a moment she was brushing her fingers through it and had some bobby pins handy, since she never went anywhere without a few brand new ones. Soon enough she had pinned Ian’s hair out of his face and brushed it back enough that it still looked presentable even though she didn’t have an actual brush or comb with her at the time. "There! Much better. It’s nice to be able to see your face!”

She continued to smile at him and blinked once when he asked if she was here with anyone. "Well, I came out here with my brother and Delilah, but they’re off having a gander at the fireflies together since I saw you and wanted to stop by and say hello! I couldn’t let you sit here and watch the fireflies by yourself. It’s too smashing and event to let you watch them alone! Company’s always better, right?” She grinned again, bringing her knees close to her chest and mimicking the way Ian sat. Fortunately she always wore leggings under dresses so she didn’t have to worry about anyone seeing anything they shouldn’t and was quite comfortable, despite Ian’s lack of obvious emotion. "Oh, I don’t suppose I’m being a bother am I? If you don’t quite fancy company, I could go…” It had only just occurred to her that perhaps he really did want to watch the fireflies alone and that he’d only allowed her to sit beside him so that he wouldn’t be rude. Maybe he was waiting for someone and she was getting in the way? She really hadn’t intended to bother him so she stood up and brushed her dress off. "If you’re meeting a totty I’ll go.” At least his hair would look good for his potential date?

Honestly, Samira was glad that Taj actually agreed to go to her healing sessions if he didn’t have to tend to anyone else. She understood that he was a doctor and if there were other people in need, he needed to be there. She wasn’t selfish enough to think otherwise, but still, having him there beside her made her feel very happy. After all, the young woman was quite taken with the doctor and very eager to get to know him better. She was fairly certain he wouldn’t cooperate as long as he was in charge of her care, though, but that wasn’t going to stop her from trying to make a lasting impression on him.

Hearing the sound of the doctor’s laughter as her hellhound greeted him caused Samira to squeak a bit. Her uninjured hand came up and covered her mouth as her large muted crimson eyes quivered at the sight of him, a rosy glow appearing on her tanned cheeks at the sight of him fawning over Coraline, and Coraline returning it. Really, the canine wasn’t so friendly towards people she didn’t know but since she seemed to understand that Tajei was Samira’s savior, she was grateful towards the man. It was almost too much cute for the beast tamer to handle in that moment. Seeing him get so excited as he spoke of how friendly Coraline was made Samira’s chest feel all fluttery for a moment as she just gawked endearingly at the man. Was he perfect or something? Gods have mercy!

“A-ah, a cat?” she asked, her voice wilting a bit. Samira loved cats, but at the same time, she had a horrible allergy to their fur that was relentless on her poor sinuses. Still, she didn’t want Taj to think she hated felines, so she forced a smile and nodded. “I’d love to meet her, I’m sure she’s darling!” she chimed optimistically. Now that things were calm, Samira was able to channel herself a bit better and her sweeter side was showing more. It wasn’t that she was only being sweet to impress the doctor or anything—albeit she did want to impress him. When she wasn’t in a war-god rage, she was actually a very gentle young lady.

Scampering off of the cot one more, Samira bid Coraline to stay put again as she padded after the doctor down the hall to his office. The moment the door open, the kitten promptly darted out to greet her master before he picked her up. “Aaw, she’s so precious,” Samira cooed, her eyes twinkling a bit. She was such an animal lover she couldn’t help but reach out to pet the little fur ball, even if it meant her allergies flaring up. “Cats are so adorable, I really wish I was able to have one myself. Unfortunately, I have a bit of an a-a-a-aaaaah-choo! Ugh… allgery,” she groaned, sighing a bit as she scratched her nose. Sadly, she’d already pet Rose, so touching her nose just made her sneeze again. When she looked up, her eyes were irritated and glassy, but she didn’t seem to mind so much.

“Having a good relationship with your pet is important. They are family, after all. Coraline is like my baby… I mean… If I knew what having a baby would be like, heh,” she said, sounding a bit stuffy as she spoke. Still, she reached out and gently poked the kitten’s nose, wiggling her fingers playfully for Rose to bat at. “Cats seem like they’re so much fun. I heard you can teach them to use a toilet,” she said, giggling a bit as she cupped her hands before her and beamed up at him. “You really love animals, huh, Doc? You should come see some of the ones I train then,” she said eagerly, leaning in a bit in anticipation for a reply.

Pushing himself up from where he lay on his belly before, Eryn was sitting up now, cross legged, holding his ankles. Swaying back and forth a bit as he was just waiting or Meridia's eventual appearance. It was there little quirky version of a phone call almost, when Eryn would toss out a squid, she would always come by. Sometimes it would take a little time, depending how far out or under the water she was.

Smiling when she finally had surfaced though, waiting till she got closer and spoke to him. He couldn't help a chuckle at her remark, 'flying fire.' Thinking how cute she was with a response like that. But it'd certainly be an event, to get to show her the pretty fireflies, since it seemed she'd never seen them before. "Hey Meridia, I'm happy to see you came by. Mhm, hehe, well not quiet flying fires. They're not hot and don't burn like a normal fire might. Fireflies are little pretty bugs that light up, like flying fires in the skies. It looks so pretty, all the little fireflies lighting up the night, under the stars and everything."

Glad she was interested in watching with him, standing as she was getting out of the water. Eryn couldn't help staring in fascination as her tail shifted, essentially splitting in half, into a pair of legs. Of course, as his gaze moved up from her legs, he was realizing that Meridia was standing there, completely bared. His face reddening, bringing his hands to his face, trying to look elsewhere and not stare. "O-OH r-right, no problem," Scrambling a bit as he pulled off his coat, holding it open so she could put her arms in and slip on the coat. Looking to the side until she had the coat on and had it zipped up to cover her body.

"H-how is it?" His coat, if she was more warmed up now. Thinking too bad the stores weren't open, he could take her to get clothes she would like that were her size that she could use whenever she was on land. Thankfully his coat was long enough on her to keep her covered. Smiling looking to her now, "I'll lead the way, there's a lot more of them this way, a lot of people will be watching them more a bit in town here." Rather then where they were standing at that moment. Just on instinct, he held out his hand, she could hold on and walk with him. Leading her to a nice spot to see all the fireflies, looking to her every so often to see her expression and reaction.

The quick journey back home from the creek was a content and peaceful one; Darlah felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off of her shoulders now that she and Bethany had cleared the air between one another. Despite that, however, she knew that it would probably take a bit of time for them to get close again. She didn't mind that one bit; her friendship with Beth was something that she treasured, and she would gladly do anything to keep it in her life.

Once they returned to the ranch and got Leo before heading the short distance back to the farm, Darlah kicked off her shoes and followed Beth into the house. She plopped herself down into a chair in the kitchen, emitting a content sigh as she looked around. ”I haven't been in here in so long...the place hasn't changed a bit,” She observed happily. She had plenty of pleasant memories both at the ranch and at the farm, and sitting in the kitchen where she'd had dinner with Beth and her family countless times as a child brought back all kinds of happy nostalgia.

As Bethany seemed to visibly tense up a little bit, the rancher's eyebrows knitted together a little bit. She stood, wandering over to where Beth stood and washed her hands as well, offering her friend a warm smile. ”I'll help too! I never get to cook with anyone anymore,” She said happily as she moved to help her friend gather all of the ingredients they would need. Cooking mostly reminded her of her dad – over the years, that had become a good thing. She'd been so avoidant of his death when she was younger, but now that she was older she found herself wanting more than anything to hold onto the memories of her childhood.

”Huh...?” Darlah mumbled, blinking her wide turquoise eyes a few times as Bethany suddenly went back to what they'd been talking about at the creek. Honestly, Darlah knew that Beth had never been nearly as emotionally open as she was, and she hadn't thought twice about her not immediately saying anything. Still, to hear that her words had made the farmer happy as well made Darlah's heart swell with joy. ”Aww, Beth...it's okay. I know I get a little too emotional sometimes...but thanks. I'm so glad we're best friends again!”

”So, what kind of pizza are we making?” She said after a moment, genuinely curious about their dinner. Since they'd skipped lunch the rancher was absolutely famished, and even as she spoke her stomach emitted a loud growl of protest. Her hand shot to her stomach, and she chuckled sheepishly as a bit of heat rose in her freckled cheeks. ”Heheh...guess I'm a little hungry after skipping lunch. Are the boys gonna be back soon? I haven't seen either of them in awhile!”

Avalon couldn't help but let out an amused chuckle as Thomas thought that he was becoming an old man before his time. Honestly, she understood; when she actually took time to relax, she ended up feeling lethargic and just...tired. Maybe loosening up a bit would actually help her to do her job better, once she thought about it. Putting on a show so that she could run Asfalis properly really was exhausting, and the idea of having a friend almost made her excited.

”Mm...yes, today was nice,” She mused decisively with a nod of her head. Though she loved her job and wouldn't trade it for anything, spending the day with Thomas reminded her of before she got involved with politics. Her life had been easier back then, certainly; she didn't really have many worries, and she was free to do whatever she wished. Still, this was the path she'd chosen and she knew she could never bring herself to abandon it. Maybe that was why it was so hard for her to make and keep friends; she supposed if it came down to it, she would choose her job over her loved ones. Was she a terrible person for such a thing? Probably, but...she preferred not to dwell on it too much.

Still, maybe Thomas' slower, more relaxed outlook on life would help her. She honestly had no idea what was to come, but at least today had been enjoyable. As Thomas spoke, she felt a shadow of a smile playing on her lips. ”I'm glad it wasn't entirely awful spending time with me,” She joked, her icy blue eyes twinkling with playfulness. ”But perhaps you're right. Work isn't everything, you know? Maybe I've lost sight of that.”

As he told her that she should come to his shop soon to look at the chess set, she nodded. ”Sure. I honestly can't wait to see them,” She said happily. Hopefully work would allow her to drop by soon; the idea of seeing Thomas again was a pleasant one, and she didn't want to get so absorbed in her job again that she forgot how nice today had been. ”Once they're done, we can have a match or two. I haven't played chess in such a long time – sorry, I know my hobbies are a little...mundane.”

”So...what's your story, hmm?” She asked curiously, her head tilting slightly to the side as she fixed her gaze on Thomas' face. ”Everyone on this island has one, right?”

She opened her mouth to say something but quickly shut it as she was left alone with her best friend’s brother. Turning back toward Adrian, her head slowly almost tilted down to her shoulder as the man stuttered as if he’d just had a bucket of ice dumped on him. If she hadn't been able to purely smell his nerves it still would have been plain as day to catch onto. Jumping a bit and returning to a more proper posture as he suddenly extended his hands, ruby red eyes blinked curiously as he rambled off an apology. The poor mess, she’d witnessed prey hold together better in the face of death than he was just talking to her. She couldn't help but wonder if she’d done something, but it was then the officer continued on with in explanation.

Delilah kept a doe in headlights gaze until he finished, in which she then rather seriously took her time to look him up and down before responding. “Nah…I-I ate earlier.” She remarked thoughtfully, her expression straight until a moment later she cracked a half smile at him, obviously just playing. Shaking her head, Her brows did curl into a slight worry a moment later though-- perhaps she shouldn't tease him on something that had so plainly stayed with him. But it was almost irresistible to do so, and what else was she to do to lighten the awkward mood between them? Now knowing it wasn't specifically her fault, his embarrassed habits were sort of endearing, albeit strange for the werewolf. If anything, she definitely would remember to keep what she was to herself-- though she did that anyway. His experiences with past beasts weren't positive, and the last thing she wanted was to frighten her best friend’s brother.

“Adrian…” She finally addressed, his name rolled in her heavy accent. “I-It’s okay.” She reassured, now wearing an earnest expression. She didn’t want him to feel uncomfortable around her, but it was okay if he had his reasons to be. Who was she to be bothered by his nervousness anyway? She had her own barriers with communicating. Adverting her gaze back to the meadow, she was able to see through the darkness and tell that her friend had found someone to chat with and seemed quite settled there. Turning back to Adrian she smiled a bit sheepishly, “I t-think your zuster has…s-settled elsewhere.” Holding up the glass jar for catching fireflies, Delilah tapped the side of it. “L-let’s go ahead, ja?” Perhaps he wouldn’t be as jittery if they were occupied with catching the fireflies. Biting her lower lip in thought for a second, she shrugged before turning and strolling into the meadow. “M-Maybe I should make you a charme for…good luck? Or an afstotende.” She mused out loud. Really, sounds like awful luck for a date to try and devour you. Though, come to think of it, she had once planned to hunt a date of her own. Shaking her head quickly, her gaze fluttered downward for a second, she’d rather not think about those times— she was much different now, the pang in her chest at remembering that testified to such.

Xavier was way too far gone to have any sort of discretion or clear thought left, especially since the vivid tingling of the kiss he'd just shared with Jo had him lusting for more. As she begged him not to stop and clambered on top of him, pushing him onto his back in the grass, he simply stared up at her for a moment before their lips met once more in a slightly clumsy but passionate embrace. He hadn't been totally sure of his impression of the shy little librarian, but he certainly hadn't expected this to happen. Yep, here he was, high and making out with a girl he'd just met in the forest. Still...he'd done weirder things.

As she guided his hand underneath her skirt and along her the smooth skin of her thigh, Xavier delighted in the tingling against his fingertips as his other hand came up to run through her silky brown hair. His lips parted hungrily; he'd never experienced anything like this, and he almost wished he could come down so that his senses wouldn't be so dulled down. It was like the world was moving in slow motion – everything around him but Jo was blurry and out of focus, but he didn't care. He only needed to see her there, feel her frigid skin against his.

The artist allowed his tongue to meet hers when they kissed once more, this time allowing his hands to move up underneath her shirt to where he could clumsily pull the fabric up and over her head. Even if he did have any sort of judgment capabilities right now, he wouldn't have thought twice about casually sleeping with Jo. He'd done it plenty of times before – he'd been a lot more wild in his younger years, and it had been awhile since he'd done anything like this with another person. Even so, he wasn't sure he'd ever felt this turned on by someone before, and the feeling was amazing.

After a moment or two of them tangling their bodies together in an increasingly heated embrace, Xavier flipped Jo onto her back and straddled her, taking a moment to pull his shirt off and toss it to the side. As he planted his hands on the ground on either side of her shoulders, the close proximity of their skin just barely touching caused a tiny hiss of steam to rise in the air. He leaned down to leave a few hungry little nips on her neck and bare collarbone, his lips eventually working their way up to her ear.

”Mm...Jo...” He murmured, pressing a kiss onto the side of her neck before moving to get the rest of their clothes off. Yes, today had ended up being a good day – he was way too high to consider if Jo would even want to see him again after this, but part of him wanted to know more about her. It wasn't often that he was genuinely interested in something, but right now all he could see and feel was Jo.

                                                                        //and fade

It might occur to her later that she didn’t usually share anything about her childhood with the people of Asfalis, aside from the fact that her father was Zeus and he’d slept with a married woman to create Valarie Petras and Val didn’t approve of the extramarital affair. Talking about lightning bugs was something she wouldn’t normally have discussed. Everyone had a childhood, that was obvious, all these demigods didn’t just appear out of nowhere, they might have been gods if they had and it wasn’t that she wanted an air of mystery about herself, she just didn’t usually talk about herself, it was more her job and duty to serve and protect, not chatter. Of course, she did have a life outside her job, sometimes, and more often than not, she was told to loosen up. Maybe she was finally listening, or maybe Gaston was easy to talk to, or a mixture of the two, but probably it was the charm speak that was so subtle the police chief didn’t notice it.

"Nah, it’s not bad. I haven’t caught any myself.” She spoke as though she thought the pastime was beneath her, as though she couldn’t be bothered to go out of her way to catch glowing little bugs only to let them go again. However, she just didn’t want to get close enough to the little glowing balls of disease ridden grossness. Val was terrified of bugs, they were the only thing that ever seemed to actually frighten her, at least noticeably enough that she might accidentally destroy parts of whatever building she was in when she came too close to one. "There’s really no point unless you enjoy imprisoning and eventually killing tiny creatures.” she hid her terror well though.

She did look on as a firefly floated over to Gaston’s hand and sat, rigid, until it left. She was a pretty rigid person, just generally speaking, her posture was straight and stiff, she never seemed fully comfortable, but she did relax slightly when the creature was gone, letting out a silent breath as it did so. "You’re usually with some woman, or man, or both, or multiples of both.” She rambled for a moment, something very unlike her, "Yet here you are alone on a festival night. Like you couldn’t find someone to spend it with if you wanted. Someone that isn’t me.” she clarified, lifting a brow at him. Most people would steer clear of the police chief, she had a few friends, that was true, generally among either the police force or the government. The mayor and a couple senators were people that she would call close enough to be friends, though not close friends. Possibly drinking buddies if she wanted to go have a night on the town, but that wasn’t something she often did. "It doesn’t really matter though, I don’t mind sitting here and seeing how long you can pretend I’m likeable company.” Val gave Gaston a bit of a grin, her teeth flashing momentarily, but the expression was gone as quickly as it had come.

Gaston wasn’t being particularly overbearing at the moment and that made his company much more enjoyable than usual. The casual conversation, without the constant flirting and being turned down, was almost comfortable. Maybe he was a better person than she originally thought.

He just didn't want anyone seeing him upset, especially not his best friend, but the frown Isaac was wearing made his heart sink in his chest. He hadn't meant to worry him, but it seemed unavoidable at this point. Rubbing his eyes a few more time Griffin shook his head hastily. “N-No, you didn’t do anything.” Exhaling slowly, the farmhand looked away toward the fields flickering with fading fireflies. “It’s just…” How was he to explain it? He didn’t feel like going in depth about his past family, but Isaac deserved some kind of explanation for his sudden behavior change, didn't he? It only felt right to do so. Giving a weak, though genuine, smile, he kept his gaze to the side still. “I know you are, I guess…I guess that’s just it.”

Sitting down on a nearby rock that happened to make a perfect seat, Griffin fiddled with his glass jar, staring attentively at the single firefly he had managed to capture— with his friend’s help— as he contemplated in silence what to say for a good few minutes. He finally did speak back up though. “I’m just…really happy.” Okay, so that hardly seemed like a proper explanation. It was true though, he was happier with his life now than he could ever remember being. He just wasn’t expressing it obviously in the moment. Then again, his expressions always seemed to be awkward and unfitting. “I’m really happy to have a family again.”

Placing the jar down in the grass momentarily, he kept it between his feet carefully so it wouldn’t fall over. Sniffling a bit, he picked up the collar of his shirt and covered his face up to his nose, staring fixatedly on the jar in the grass to give himself a calming point to focus on. “I…I never felt like I belonged anywhere before. I guess…thinking about that subject…I-I guess it still bothers me…my….my parents didn't want much to do with me....and I just...I never felt like I belonged anywhere." He rambled out quickly, stumbling over some of the words as he felt the heat rise to his face out of nerves, feet bouncing up and down rapidly in small movements. "I never felt at home before now, so I just, I-I..." He trailed off, caught off guard by the sudden urge to cry again. He yanked the collar of his shirt up so that his entire face hid in his shirt as his body curled forward, head to his knees. He'd never mentioned anything about his family before, and suddenly speaking about it all out loud made it hard to keep the burning sensation from his eyes. He hadn't even mentioned his sister-- he just wasn't able to right now. He was so terribly happy that he had a family in Isaac and Bethany, but at the same time thinking about his past still caused that familiar ache in his heart-- and he didn't know how to deal with that.

                                                          ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

A large grin appeared on her features when Bastille hit the send button on her phone and a few moments later, a bubbly ringtone let her know that the picture had been received. Opening it up, she grinned a little wider. "I’m cross-eyed!” Daphne felt that she looked quite silly in the picture with her eyes crossed and her mouth slightly open as she stared at the glowing bug on her nose, but she was capable of laughing at herself and honestly liked the picture a great deal. A few moments later though, at the sound of the word “walk” Jax was on his feet, tongue lolling out the side of his mouth and he yipped excitedly. Once again, the redhead let out a bit of a laugh. "I think he’s pretty excited to get moving again, don’t you think?” The puppy seemed to have near limitless energy.

Daphne got to her feet and stretched out slightly, lifting her hands above her head before turning to smile at Bastille and held out her hand to help the vet up. "I’d love to. The beach is always so lovely and if the fireflies are floating around there as well, then it will be even better, don’t you think?” Whether the glowing bugs had reached the beach or not, Daphne had no issues with going somewhere with a pretty lady, even if their small horde of pets was included. Jax barked again, running in circles until she managed to snatch up his leash. "Besides, you said the w word! I wouldn’t be able to get out of it without him whinin’ for a year.” She gave Bastille a quick wink, letting the woman know that she wasn’t upset in the slightest and hoping that the message got through alright. Daphne was quite content with the way the night was turning out already and was hoping that it would only get better.

The beach wasn’t too far away and there were only a few stray fireflies milling about, but Jax pranced happily around in the sand, keeping a safe distance from the water’s edge of his own accord. He was terrified of water now and probably wouldn’t get over the fear for a very long time. Oh well, Dahpne could keep him safe and she’d love him even if he was afraid of water for the rest of his life. "It’s so quiet here.” she spoke quietly, as though afraid to break the silence too suddenly. "Everyone must still be looking at the fireflies. I guess we have the beach to ourselves then! Too bad I didn’t bring a suit.” She probably wouldn’t have gone swimming anyway, it was likely to get way too cold and she didn’t want to get sick, not to mention Jax was too frightened of water to get close.

That was, of course, the moment that Daphne ran out of things to say and for the life of her couldn’t think of another topic to go on about. Maybe Bastille could think of one, but Daphne wasn’t about to start talking about the weather, that was reserved for tea times or other silly things, not walking along the beach with a cute girl. Huh, maybe her own inability to strike up a conversation was part of why she hadn’t been in a relationship in years and not just her demanding occupation.

It is now Sunday, the 5th of Summer. Most people have calmed down since the firefly festival and a few people, girls specifically, have begun training (a bit late) for Heiaia, a race held for girls in honor of Hera on the 14th of Summer. The weather for the day is about eighty degrees Fahrenheit with a touch of humidity. This time of the year is prone to summer storms and there are clouds rolling in from the west, there may be a storm later.

                                                  It is also Valarie's birthday.
