Yeah, for example, I could burn my Harry Potter book because I think J. K. Rowling is a mediocre author and I resent how her works are overrated and such and such. I could also stomp and destroy a DVD of LoTR cuz it ruined the original work and it just pissed me off. I could also burn a copy of Da Vince Code because I think these kinds of books are tricking people into thinking that these things actually took place and such. I could also burn the "red book" because it supports communism and I favor McCarthyism and blah and so on and this and that and blah! Is that so wrong now?
Of course people don't burn or ban books thinking that it will make the books dissapear. It's about the act. It's a statement for a community or society.

As someone else said here already what it does, though, is make more people wanting to read it. It's the old story of the forbidden chamber.

Censoring or banning books is wrong in the sense that you cannot kill the thoughts and ideals of people simply by destroying the medium.

Oh and when you burn a book in your backyard because you hate it, that's different because you're not depriving others of being able to read it.

Considering you always somehow acquired the book, you are never depriving others of their ability to read it (unless you use the smoke or the ashes to somehow blind them). Burning a library book, or a book you dont own is wrong, but for entirelly different reasons. The location (backyard, the middle of a street, school classroom) doesnt really matter, at least beyond Fire security safety.
I wouldn't want any kids i may have to read Harry Potter and the order of the Pheonix and The Davinci code because they are crappy books (and teh later quite possibly plagerized to boot).

His Dark Materiels, on the other hand, i would encourage Kids to read... that's pretty good writing.
the churches seem to act as if every piece of literature is trying to compremise how young christians feel about god or think the book is satanic because of witchcraft or magic
It's because they're desperate to keep the people in the religion.
It's all a plan to keep us stupid so they can make lots of money.

(Also most people, especially those experiencing doubt about their religions, probably will want to read those books more, which destroys the whole point of the exercise ironically)

If people fear what they don't like then they burn books and then they become more popular because others are curious.
Banning or burning books is wrong. Im a writer, and if I ever get my book published im for sure gonna have it burned because there's magic in it.
Oh my god..my book's the spawn off satan now.. stare *sarcasm*
Anyway, books should be respected not burned.

Why? because the writer took his (or hers) time to write it? he was paid for when people acquired the book. Why should books "be respected"?

Books represent a persons thoughts, ideas and opinions, none of which can truly be equated to money. To not respect the book is to not respect the legitimacy of the writer's opinion. Keep in mind, every person is entitled to his or her own opinion, and to have that opinion respected, whether it is agreed with or not. This goes back to the philosophy behind the first amendment to the US consititution:

"I may not like what you have to say, but I'll die to defend your right to say it."
If you don't want to read a book, don't read it. The morality of others is not your business, keep your beliefs to yourself. Ignorance is stupid. If you want to fight the 'enemy' it would be smart to know everything about them.

Close, but not quite.

Yes, but that is different than deciding the book should be banned for that reason.

Why is porno where children can see it immoral?
As long as they understand what's going on...

And what is the difference between porn and nudity in classical art? We forbid children to see two people making out yet I've seen some pretty raunchy stuff on the History Channel which is an educational channel.

Porn, as far as I know, is intended specifically to arouse people. With no other purpose. The stuff you see on the History channel and such, are for the purpose of teaching people.
Although you could learn from porn and you could get aroused from the history channel stuff, but I just don't see why censoring porn for young children is so bad- I don't think young children would be interested anyway. They'd more likely just be grossed out.
