I was not a fan of My Little Pony growing up. I honestly thought the ponies always looked sad.
It also seemed incredibly girly. I was very much a tomboy.

Something about the animation for Friendship is Magic is alluring.
It's just... I dunno, I really like it. It's hard to explain.
My fiance also likes it (and is a 25 year old male) and he attributes it mostly to the animation and voice acting.
It helps that the stories for each episode are interesting, and aren't "dumbed down" seeing as it's a kids show.
But the cool thing about the fanbase being made up of adults is that, for us collectors, we get cool stuff. Instead of your standard toys that little girls would like, we've gotten some amazing figures to put on display, clothing that doesn't have childish designs on it, etc.
There's also a collectible card game that was released this year, and it's gaining popularity. I have friends who don't even watch the show and they love the card game.
