I think it should be legal. Of course, it shouldn't be allowed for just any crime. However, it would be bad for someone to be put to death only to find out that they didn't do it.
If someone killed another, and there is substantial evidence against them, they should be executed. It's plain and simple. And don't even think of telling me that 'you're playing God!' crap, Because if that were the case, we'd be killed by cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and other livestock. Also, it'll give a bit of warning to others who think of murdering another.

Well I completely disagree w/ the death penalty I just hate the idea of killing. So the people go and kill and then what do we do ...the same thing and just kill them...do two wrongs make a right? Also if ur a christinan one of the commandments is thou shall not kill! I think the ppl should get jail time and counciling and possibly they can change. If you kill someone after they commit a horrible crime u kind of never gift them time to have a second chance to make up for what they did....I dunno anyway like I said I do not support the death penalty (this is my opinion I dont mean to offend anyone by saying this!)

Thats true about the animal thing...I didnt think about that
Yes, there should be. An eye for an I, as they say.
Capital punishment is murder with a fancy name. Murder is illegal. It's entirely hypocritical for the government to practice it. If someone committed murder, and I murdered them for it, would it be alright? It's the sort of thing gang wars are made of. It's also exactly the sort of thing the government does. So what impression is the government trying to give citizens? Is murder acceptable or not? Because the double standard is confusing.

You complain of the cost of keeping a person in prison, but it actually costs more to kill them. source

And just to balance out everyones' "an eye for an eye" quote: an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind.
personally i would prefer to be executed rather than having to go to jail, but then again i have very different opinions on life and death to the majority of people. I think they should have a choice.

Serious debate, please.

What is your stand on the Death sentance? My view is as follows:

The death sentance should be legal in all 50 states, because otherwise the jails will be crammed full of prisoners who will die in prison anyway (the murders with one or more life sentances, no paroll, etc). Why keep a man or woman in a jail cell, eating state-funded food, drinking water and using the state-funded jail facilities only to be destined to die there? Is it so difficult to quicken the process and get them out of the jail system? Then it will free up a jail cell for a criminal who has less than a full life sentance and will be free in x many months or years?

Not to mention that each day in jail a prisoner. In New York, a single prisoner will set the state back over *$24,000 annually. Multiply that by a few hundred. This is one of the highest prison costs in the nation. Most other states spend about $17,000 per inmate.

All of this money is taken from the taxes. If the death sentance was imposed on all states and executions were done more frequently, out jails would be set back less money, more jail cells will be open for use by non-violent criminals.

I'm with you 89%!
THE DEATH SENTENCE SHOULD NOT BE LEGAL

My reason

The justice system is falable. While a man is alive, he can fight for his innocence to be revealed and if he is proven innocent, released. You can't release a dead man if he's proven innocent. Doesn't the thought that one day you could be sat in that chair purely because you were in the wrong place at the wrong time scare the s**t out of you?

HOWEVER

I believe prison life, as it stands, it too easy. Prisoners should have small acomodation, be fed to the lowest standard and only alowed to drink water. Social activity should be limited to a few hours a day and prisoners should be provided simple work to do such as stuffing envolopes and be penalised be reduced time to socialise if they do not comply. There should be a TV room where prisoners can choose to watch TV during their social hours, and a library, but books and TV's should not be alowed in the room.

Prison should not be a easy thing. It should be scary and it should be punishment. There should be rehabilitation classes as well, but concentrated in the time up to you're leaving, maybe in the last year/six lonths of longer stays or through the duration of shorter stays.
What I want is that every inmate has to go through psychological profiling to see if they can ever get rehabilitated and get back to society. If you can get rehabilitated you should get to live in prison until you get out. If you can't they should just pull the switch on you and get it done with. A thing such as life in prison shouldn't exist, if you can't get rehabilitated there is absolutely no reason for you to waste our tax-dollars.

That presumes that everybody who is found guilty is guilty. Life in prison gives the change for the sentence to be overthrown. You can't let a dead guy out of prison. The only way it would EVER be justifiable is if the justice system was 100% accurate, and it never will be.

Also, it's hard to judge if someone can be rehabilitated and if they have been rehabilitated. How do you know hat about someone?
I believe that the dealth sentence should be legal in all states for 2 reasons. One if we did not have a dealth sentence then the djails would just get more and more full and we pay for them with our taxes. And two because the peoplr who have a chance at getting the dealth sentence have commited many disguisting crime, like murder. So I beleive that they should pay with there lives. I mean why should they beable to kill peooplr that did nothing wrong but when they do somehting this bad get to live. Now how is that fair?

I believe that the death penalty should only be used for serial killers and mass murders. Sometimes people just snap out and take things alittle too far, I don't think they derseve to die although what they did was very wrong. If someone kills more than one person then there is little doubt that they have no respect for human life.

It's true that our government spends a ton of money each year on inmates, but I disagree with the death penalty for that fact alone. The process of getting a criminal to the death penalty, then enacting a proper execution is actually MORE expensive than just keeping them in imprisonment. And to add to that, a person's scheduled date does not come swiftly. They still must spend a prolonged time in imprisonment, and can even prolong that themselves for an incredibly loooonger amount of time by appealing the case time after time.
My friend who was doing research on this for Sociology gave me an interesting fact, which I unfortunately don't remember exactly how it went, but I believe she said something along the lines of it costing more to put someone to death than it does to give them a five star inn for the remainder of their life.

Anyone who wishes to see how expensive it really is for the death penalty, go here: http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/article.php?did=108&scid=7
