It's true that our government spends a ton of money each year on inmates, but I disagree with the death penalty for that fact alone. The process of getting a criminal to the death penalty, then enacting a proper execution is actually MORE expensive than just keeping them in imprisonment. And to add to that, a person's scheduled date does not come swiftly. They still must spend a prolonged time in imprisonment, and can even prolong that themselves for an incredibly loooonger amount of time by appealing the case time after time.
My friend who was doing research on this for Sociology gave me an interesting fact, which I unfortunately don't remember exactly how it went, but I believe she said something along the lines of it costing more to put someone to death than it does to give them a five star inn for the remainder of their life.
