I like Robert A. Heinlein's children's books, though the science in some is out of date, and some of his earlier adult novels and stories - his future history stories are excellent, but many of his later books expressed opinions I found objectionable. Arthur C. Clarke has some excellent books, though his novels can be a little dry. Of newer writers, I particularly like Lois McMaster Bujold's novels featuring Miles Vorkosigan.
