As far as dyes go:

-- The Ukeshu's private guard have the three stripes down the back and some sort of facial marking

-- The majority of wild rats are familiar with the Ukeshu, even if they're not in the same colony. He is THE BOSS and they all defer to him. Many of them are his sons and grandsons and great-grandsons that have spread out to other territories.

-- Wild rats use dyes a whole lot more than domestic do

It seems reasonable to me that a colony would have certain designs for different ranks, but those would be arbitrary. So, like, a given colony would probably mark its own rats according to rank, but not necessarily the same from one colony to the next.

I also suspect that the domestic rats choose dyes that are more ornamental and personal, since they have a higher "sense of self" than the wilds. The wild rats often have a hard time understanding the notion of existing as individual entities separate from their colony.
