Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
As the sunlight broke into the teenager's room at the mafia family main house, it revealed a 15 year old sprawled on the top of the bed covers. She was still dressed in the black dress from the funeral the day before. Her hair was a tangled mess around her head. And over the whole seen was sprinkled sheet music, in various stages of crumpling. As Era finally pried her eyes open, she groaned slightly. She sat up slowly and stared at the door. This was the worst part of the day for her. Every morning for the last week she'd woken up and looked to the door, expecting to see her father popping his head in the door. He would smile and say, "Buon giorno, bellissima." And she would dutifully reply, "Buon giorno, papa."
Not for the first time, Era found herself longingly staring at the door. Like if she just waited long enough, his head would pop in to smile and tell her good morning. But it didn't and was yet another cruel reminder that it never would. But this morning was better than the last few. She had Jenson now. They were officially going steady. It was her silver lining in all of this. And maybe someday he'd be there in the mornings to greet her as she woke up. The thought was enough to bolster her mood as she stood up to get ready for the day.
After reassembling her room, dressing in her normal modest attire, and corralling her hair into a thick braid that constantly fell over her shoulder, Era made her way downstairs. She stepped outside to grab the paper, then turned and walked into the kitchen and put together a bowl of cereal. As she ate, she read the comics. Little Orphan Annie had always been a favorite of hers, although it felt strange to read it as an orphan herself. Maybe I should get a dog. She thought idly. It was a strange thought, and one of the first moments she'd managed to think of herself as an orphan without breaking down. It helped that her situation wasn't nearly as dire as the comic character's always was. With the inheritance her father left for her, she would be comfortable for the rest of her life. Add another bit of silver lining.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me
