When famine hit, the Cavendish suffered. When floods came, the Cavendish suffered. When plague spread, the Cavendish suffered. This is something no proud Cavendish ever forgets. But despite their hardships they persevered, with only their motto to guide them - "Destiny, Sacrifice, Fertility." And it was so, for despite the Cavendish curse, they multiplied with alarming speed, and through their sacrifices they achieved their destiny; in the year 1200, Jothan Cavendish was crowned king after successfully driving Alarch the Deathless and his family from the palace, and no other family has had the privilege of sitting on the throne since.

The Strathmores and Cavendish were once an alliance to be feared. For hundreds of years, the two families fought side-by-side like true kin. However, that changed when Alarch the Deathless was defeated; Alden Strathmore was the one to lead the charge against the palace, and he was the one to be crowned king were they to succeed. Nobody knows why Alden did not become King, though the Strathmores hold a deep hatred in their hearts because of it.

The Maughams are a family well-known for the prolific amount of philosophers, writers, and drunkards they produce. All children born to the Maugham clan are unfortunate and miserable, with little luck or light in their lives to speak of. Most go on to either create beautiful works of art, or waste their lives in society, drinking too much and keeping in the company of ne'er-do-wells. They are never well-liked, and their deaths - either grisly accidents or self-inflicted - are rarely mourned. The Maughams have learned to embrace death and misfortune with confidence and the familiarity of an old friend, thus their crest bears the badge of Death, black as dried blood and emblazoned with the crosses of mausoleum gates, to signify where all Maughams are headed.
The latest in the Maugham family to pass on is ser Walter Maugham, who died of a poor liver. His sole heir, who was not in his custody at the time of his death, has yet to be found.

Little is known about the Sanguine family, other than the fact that they lived in Newhaven until returning to Newport quite recently within the last fifty years. Their crest is as old as their name, bearing the badge of Death in royal purple decorated with Inlustratori's eye, Corvus the crow-God of spies, Morsus the snake-God of betrayal, and the Temple of the Sun. The patriarch of Sanguine sends his three sons who, despite their bright skin and handsome faces, seem to have a displeasing aura about them. It's whispered that they are the descendants of Alarch the Deathless, the ruthless king who abandoned his mortality through supernatural means in order to reclaim the immortal powers the ancestors had once possessed.

The Barrington family, though originating from Newport, now reside in Valencia. Having been the royal family's advisers for centuries, they've now been stationed here to act as ambassadors both towards and for the Valencian people. The patriarch of the Barrington family, ser Whitman Barrington, is quite a busy man, and so it is quite difficult to obtain an audience with him, even if you are his own child. Lady Barrington is just as active, frequently entering into the society of other Newporters or those who may help advance her husband's position. Because of this, the two Barrington children were often left to their governesses, or worse - to their own devices. In a town like Valencia, just what might that mean?

Strong like the sea - the motto of the Smyth family. Once just a young, poverty-stricken boy with only his mother to care for him, Edmund Smyth is now the head of the wealthy Smyth household and name. Using only his wit and charisma, he charmed himself through the ranks of the navy, trading off and profiting from his munitions and rations all the while. Strong-willed and courageous, he's made a name for his family as a tough and unrelenting force, of which you do not want to make an enemy. Ser Smyth constantly pushes his only son to exceed the boundaries of their position, and puts him through expensive schooling and training to make sure of it. Money is no longer an object to the rising Smyths, who seek only what is out of their reach.

It seems almost as if the Hawke family has come into money only by chance. However, that would be an insult to Lady Hawke's intelligence - the sole leader of her family, she has brought her name into fame with ease. Or, rather, infamy? A pirate with a care for nothing but the finest things in life, her reckless ways are what has brought her to the top. Guided only by their hearts, the Hawkes seek whatever they desire, whenever they desire it. It's a surprise that her only daughter, raised in that same lifestyle, is now being invited to the royal palace - the very family her mother spat upon with her actions. Not only that, but it should also come as a surprise that this daughter's only childhood friend, throughout her many years of living at sea and hardly stepping a foot onto land, is the son of strict old Smyth himself!

William Wyndham was once a great man - his occupation was to explore the world to discover new creatures and document them for the Crown. He's been to the Northernlands and experienced their hardships firsthand. He's been to Chartref Mawr, where his neck felt their blades threaten against his life. Yet despite having seen and experienced all things a mortal could experience, he was never satisfied. As his children began to grow, he brought them alongside him to these new lands, introducing them to intriguing and sometimes dangerous creatures. His careless love for the unknown endangered himself and his family many times, but their enjoyment never ceased. Now settled in Newhaven, too old to venture as he once had, he oversees a large portion of exotic trades. And with his wife deceased, and his children being sent away, there is little else to occupy his time.

Despite its bountiful gifts of nature, and the wonderous nature surrounding it, the Somerset home was never a particularly joyous place. After the passing of Lady Lillian, the mother of the two Somerset girls, life was often somber. The youngest daughter of the household, who inherited her mother's weak blood and frail composure, was placed under lock and key by her strict and grieving father, while the eldest was free to go about as she pleased. But their rebellious spirits and hard-headed nature could be quelled by nothing, and frequently the two devilish sisters worked together to disobey their father's rules, despite their conflicts of personality. When the Crown's order came, ser Somerset did everything in his power to keep his youngest daughter home, but not much can make the King second-guess his decisions.

Earning the role of leader only by the sharpness of his blade and the strength of his muscles, Goraidh Bràigheach is a man that most not only fear, but love. Helping his people to maintain prosperity in the harshness of Tiroedd Garw, he's treated with the respect any king would receive. His eldest son, the pride of the Northernlands, has been raised with the intent to lead just the same. When a letter arrived from the Crescent Isles demanding his son to be sent and married, Goraidh viewed it as the perfect chance to advance their position, despite his son's hesitation. With him he brings two wards of his family, both Free Men, who were taken in as babies abandoned in the wilds. Raised the same as Goraidh's own children, they demand the same respect, despite their entire lives directly contradicting the saying of their people - Your greatest enemy is your support.
