You can buy fishes either at Phin Phang (those that give much gold cost Gaia Cash that you have to buy for real money) or at the marketplace for gold (usually very expensive). But before you decide to buy fishes you should have played a lot, so you'll know which fishes are good and which are not. There are also guides in the Aquarium discussion forum.
You can also earn lots of gold playing zOMG. Soon (hopefully tomorrow) the delayed easter event will start. With a bit luck you can win a golden egg, which gives you a passive luck increasing ring. More luck means more gold. But if you decide to start playing zOMG you should read the newbie-guide at the zOMG forum, because the game has almost no tutorial, so it might be a bit confusing at the beginning.
You can also earn gold by posting at the forums (we even have a spam forum, called the Chatter Box), doing the Daily Chances, feeding your fishes every day and playing games such as Jigsaw. But the easiest and fastest ways are playing Booty Grab and zOMG. 3nodding
