Alanna of Trebond was born in 419 HE along with her twin brother, Thom. Her mother died giving birth to the twins. Alanna grew up being taught by Coram Smythesson, a former soldier, and Maude Tanner, the village healer. She learned basic fighting skills, how to track and hunt, and how to handle her Gift. However, she was hesitant at using the full potential of her Gift because she was afraid of magic.

When it came time for her to be sent to the convent to become a lady and for her brother Thom to learn how to be a knight, they decided to switch places. Alanna cut her hair, dressed as a boy, and went off to the royal palace to become a knight while her brother was taken to the City of the Gods to learn magic.

While learning at the palace, she met many of her best friends including the crown prince Jonathon of Conte, George Cooper and his mother Eleni, Myles of Olau, Gareth of Naxen the Younger, and many others. She also faced a few difficulties with disguising herself as a boy, including an aversion to swimming that none of her friends understood.

She had a complicated romantic relation with Prince Jonathon and with George Cooper, the King of the Thieves. These two and her man-at-arms Coram were the only two that knew her true identity while she was training.

Alanna became the foe of master sorcerer Duke Roger of Conte while at court. Duke Roger, the cousin of Prince Jonathon, was to become next in line for the throne if anything was to happen to Jonathon. Therefore, he plotted murder of the king, queen, and Prince Jonathon.

After her Ordeal of Knighthood, Alanna formerly accused Duke Roger and was sentenced to a duel in which her true identity was revealed and Duke Roger of Conte was defeated.

Alanna left Corus and decided to ultimately search for the Dominion Jewel: an item that would indeed prove Jonathon's kingship to the rest of Tortall. During her travels, Alanna encountered the Bazhir tribe of the Bloody Hawk in the southern desert. She ultimately became the first woman shaman of the tribe. Since she does not intend to stay forever, she trains three children to become shamans and then leaves in search of the Dominion Jewel.

Alanna follows the path given to her by the map. On the way she encounters Liam Ironarm, the Dragon of Shang, and Thayet jian Wilima along with her guard, Buriram Tourakom. They accompany Alanna and Coram to the Roof of the World, where the Dominion Jewel is supposed to be. While travelling Alanna and Liam begin a romantic relationship which doesn't last long because of his fear of magic. After their arrival at the Roof of the World Alanna has to fight her way through a snow storm and to battle an immortal before finally gaining the Dominion Jewel. She brings it home to Corus. By then Jon is king as his parents are dead, and Roger lives again. On her return Jon convinces Alanna to become his King's Champion.

George Cooper was given the title of Baron of Pirate's Swoop and asks Alanna to be his Baroness. They have three children together and continue to live their life at Pirate's Swoop and continue their royal duties.
