As a young child, Sting Oakley became one of the experiments of Blue Cosmos - an organization that holds the belief that the altering of genes is wrong and that all Coordinators should be exterminated. These experiments were known as Extended - people who were raised from a very young age to do nothing but fight. Drugs and other methods are used to enhance their abilities and make them the ultimate fighting machines. Other means of control include block words, but it is not clear whether or not Sting has one since it was never mentioned in the series.
Whether or not it was Sting's conscious choice to become a part of these experiments is unknown (though I highly doubt it), but nevertheless, he was raised in Lodonia's laboratory along with other children, including Auel and Stellar. Judging by what episode 25 shows us, Sting was best when it came to mobile suit piloting while Auel excelled with guns and Stellar with knives. These three were weeded out from a large group and became the best, eventually becoming the only left and assigned under Neo Lorrnoke's command. After missions, he must retire to these dome-like pods for maintenance so his body can continue to function properly. These pods can also be used to alter his memories.
Not much else is known on Sting Oakley. Like all the other experiments, all personal information and data have been swept from the records.

The Phantom Pain is a special forces team created by the Earth Alliance. They're used for special missions such as the hi-jacking of the ZAFT mobile suits, but most of the time, they're pilots of mobile suits in battle. They're different from other mobile suit pilots however, in that all three of them are Extendeds, and therefore, ultimate soldiers. They were made specifically for fighting, and if they cannot complete their task, they are failures.

The Phantom Pain is made up of of Sting Oakley, Auel Neider and Stellar Loussier. Their leader is Neo Roanoke. Neo treats them all fairly well, considering he believes them to be pieces of equipment. He is especially careful around Stellar; he knows Stellar had an incredible phobia of death, and a very strong determination to stay alive. Carefully, he crafted a relationship with her where Stellar viewed him as almost a fatherly type figure, where she would do anything to protect Neo. Not more than once, she screams for Neo's name, for Neo to comfort her and pat her on the head, for him to tell her she did another great job out there on the battlefield. It would seem that Stellar lives from one day to the next fueld by a desire to protect Neo, and carry out his commands.

Sting and Auel are close, maybe even best, friends. Off the battlefield, Sting interacts with Auel more than he does anyone else aboard the ship. They talk comfortably with each other and are always together, one way or another. Sometimes, they are seen playing cards with one another or just lazing about. While on Earth, they also play each other in basketball. Both are serious cheaters though xD Well, Sting started it by going under instead of left or right, but Auel used him as a step-ladder. Not to mention that Auel also lectured Sting on the rules beforehand.
A key to their friendship is how well they balance each other out. While Auel acts like a know-it-all and is rather cocky at times, Sting is calm and realizes when he's wrong. Sting doesn't hesitate to yell at Auel when he's being an idiot or too conceited, occasionally keeping him in check while on the battlefield so he doesn't get himself killed. In return, Auel keeps Sting from being too serious and always gets him to lighten up a little. They taunt and tease each other on an almost daily basis; Auel's nicknames include 'idiot' in Sting's book. Nevertheless, it's obvious Sting does care about Auel and looks out for him.
On the battlefield, the two usually fight side-by-side and cover for each other when attacking. They make a perfect team if you put aside Auel's snide comments and general acting like a know-it-all. However, Auel holds a certain amount of respect and trust for Sting while on the battlefield, agreeing to his orders without question. When together, they make sure that the other gets back in one piece and fight together beautifully.

Stellar Loussier .««
Though he doesn't interact with her as much as Auel, Sting still cares deeply for Stellar. With Stellar, Sting takes up the role of big brother to make sure she is careful and doesn't get hurt since she is always daydreaming or spacing out. He is kind to her and is always the one to relay messages to her or defend her against attacks while on the battlefield since Auel won't do anything but tease her (though he really does care about her, don't worry).
Caring for her the way he does, Sting usually tries to make Stellar happy and agrees to her requests. For example, at the end of the Suit 7 Mini Drama, he agrees to play again "tomorrow" because she likes playing basketball with them. Even if he's protective of Stellar, he's not overprotective. He'll let her do what she likes, for the most part, because he trusts that she'll be okay on her own and will come back. Besides, he knows that their time in this universe might not be long and he wants her to enjoy life while she still can, not wanting her innocence to be taken away. This can possibly be the reason why he always chews Auel out when he's mean to her.
Although Sting is sometimes a little mean to her (I suspect he picked it up from Auel) like when she is dancing around "like an idiot", he doesn't mind her childlike innocence and I think that he might even like that quality about her. The optimism and smile she always has off the battlefield seems to cheer him up considerably. Sting is grateful that Stellar is around to remind him that maybe he can be useful for something other than just fighting and this thought seems to have helped him keep his sanity in this cruel world. Together, they have the perfect semblance of a brother-sister relationship.
