I know, specially in remote areas.
It's pretty safe over here, a lot of the public buildings have lightning conductors.
It happened to me once that the lightning hit a building next to me, was a few meters.
(never forget that day, I was filling gas tanks for the caravans on the camping site o.0)
Huge flash, but luckily not much damage, black roof top >< That lightning conductor was luckily very effective.

Sure was, my niece was all excited too, we had to look of course, was a big thunderstorm, lasted more than 2 hours. Which is long for this area.

and make sure you dress warm. Specially if you stay in that (cold) water for long.

That sure is a lot of water there, prob a lot of trash, mud and mosquitoes also, I am afraid.

I don't know, every area has advantages and disadvantages.
I life in a province that is almost completely below sealevel, I am used to it.
Pay a lot of taxes to the waterworks/plans here, you know, so it better be safe razz
I cannot image living in a area with tornadoes, major droughts or bushfires for example.

It's a touch job getting all the water and mud out of the houses and town.
A couple of years ago we had some floodings over here too, not as bad as yours I think.
Lived in a shared house back then, me on the top floor and a lady below.
Her house was a mess, took us 2 days to clean it all, but fortunate only the floor needed replacement.
