Actually both, I usually sketch it out in pencil then outline/color in Open Canvas on my tablet. Makes my life like a billion times easier.

Did you self teach or did you go to classes?
I started in my freshman year of high school or at least that's when I started anime. I'm 21 now and as far as how I learned I tried taking a drawing class a few semesters ago and I couldn't do it cause I just didn't like drawing fruit, I'm pretty much self taught. A lot of my better work is traditional art.
