Certainly, you can copywrite protect a character created in Gaia. Although you are relying on the artwork of others, the *character* you create is yours, if it can be shown to exist independently of the artwork on the site. (E.g., you cannot copywrite a character that is someone else's effort, for instance, Ster Academy kids, or an I Am character, obviously.) To that extent, you are using the Gaia site as inspiration; a tool, much like one uses the Gimp app. However, you should most definitely draw your character out yourself, unless you want legal grief from the actual artist. (Or get their permission to use it.) And whatever it is you have, just write the circle C on it... (c), and sign it and date it. That pretty much secures whatever interest you have in the work, and it is evidence of your intent.
